Deductive Reasoning By Silver Screen Videos "Three-Minute Mysteries Bonus Pack" is a free collection of five mystery puzzles written by Stephen Rogers, who also sells several supposedly similar longer collections. The book is thus similar to some of the free game apps that are available that offered mini-versions of the games for free. In both cases, the idea is that if people like the free sample they get, they will be inclined to make a purchase. In the case of "Three-Minute Mysteries," the sample wasn't bad, but I'm not sure about whether I'd want to buy a longer version. Each of the five mysteries in the book is a rather unusual type of short short, or flash fiction story. Each story begins with police investigating a crime that has recently occurred. In most but not all of the cases, the crime is, not surprisingly, a murder. The police usually take a look around the crime scene and talk to one or two witnesses. Then, after about five pages, the author informs the readers that they have enough information to solve the case and challenges them to do so. The solution generally takes about one paragraph and appears on the next page, so that readers can't accidentally spoil it. The setting is generic and the officers differ from case to case. You might expect the writing in "Three Minute Mysteries" to be very rudimentary, but Rogers actually does try to to tell a story. The dialogue isn't forced, and he gives his various witnesses and suspects at least a semblance of a personality. Obviously, you can't create fully realized characters in four or five pages, but they aren't mere pieces on a Clue board. In the last (and best) story, a famous model is murdered, and the three suspects, all employees, get quite catty while trying to finger one another for the crime. Although most people are going to read a book like this for the puzzles, not the story and dialogue, Rogers makes it easy for readers to get through each story. As far as the mystery aspect of "Three Minute Mysteries" is concerned, the book is more of a mixed bag. I was able to solve three of the five mysteries through careful reading. However, the other two solutions were arbitrary and a bit of a stretch, one that I didn't feel was warranted in that short a story. Needless to say, two stories that I didn't think were fair out of five is a very high percentage, and I wouldn't want to read an entire book of puzzles in which nearly half the solutions were that arbitrary.Ellery Queen's earliest books were also written in the form of "challenges to the reader." As some point, the author would spend a page of so telling the readers they had all the information they needed to solve the case, and, sure enough, in the next chapter, the detective would reveal the killer and his reasoning. Of course, in a 200-page novel, Queen managed to plant a fairly large number of clues, so that it required one or two chapters to explain everything. By contrast, in "Three Minute Mysteries," Rogers usually has one clue in the story and a one-paragraph solution. The reader has to figure out just what that one clue was.Rogers' storytelling technique and writing skills were actually better than I thought they would be, based on this type of puzzle book. On the other hand, at least two of the mysteries didn't seem to me to be fair. These stories would certainly have worked better at ten pages rather than five. As a free book and a very short read (30 minutes or less even with very leisurely reading and attempting to figure out the solutions), I would mildly recommend "Three Minute Mysteries." Naturally, anyone who doesn't enjoy these types of puzzles to begin with would probably not enjoy this free sample and would definitely not enjoy paying for a longer version. I do like these types of puzzles, but even for me, I can't deduce whether the Rogers' longer books would be very entertaining.

Rodgers By Kevin Tipple Five short mystery stories make up the Three-Minute Mysteries Bonus Pack by Stephen D. Rodgers. Each short mystery is designed to give the reader enough clues to solve the case. Once you think you have the mystery figured out, you turn the page, and see if the solution is the one you came up with to solve the case.Store owner Alice Mendoza needs to forget about her insurance claim to focus on the questions of Police Detective Carol Simmons. In “Think Globally, Steal Locally” an armed robbery of a store that specializes in hand-crafted items from all over the world has few suspects.Stacy is the new widow in “A Dying Clue.” Detective Laura McKinley has to figure out what role, if any the restaurant partly owned by Stacy’s husband, Matt, played in the death. The Boss is dead in “Cream of The Crop.” Detectives Wilson and Handler have to go figure out who killed Mr. Baldwin at work.As in the first tale, robbery is also the subject of the “All-Knowing Eye” where Detective Pamela Yates tries to catch the thief that hit the Nyman House. A character name change part of the way through the story is not a clue though the error does mar the read a little bit.It is a far different world than Officer Dana Cooke is used to as she does perimeter duty in “Models of Bad Behavior.” Blending into the background and being ignored by several suspects who just can’t be quiet could be a very good thing for her career wise. The tales in the Three-Minute Minute Mysteries Bonus Pack are all good ones. Author Stephen D. Rodgers makes sure that there are multiple possible suspects in each tale who are capable of various crimes. An entertaining and fast read, the book moves quickly and offers quite a few surprises.Amazon reports that I picked this up in the middle of August to read and review. I have no idea now how I came across it, but am sure I saw it online somewhere.Kevin R. Tipple ©2015
