His writing is so original. There is no figuring out ahead of time how this one is going to end, that's for sure. The worst part of his books is always the end, because that means I have to impatiently wait for his next book to come out! Thanks for your literary genius, Rick. I have read everything that you have written so far and there is not a bad one in the bunch. This one has definitely been the best yet!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One kick ass read. By claudette valliere Another great Manny Williams read. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know what the book is actually about. This one starts with Manny chasing an idiot through the streets. This idiot threatened Chloe and Ian with a knife. Manny is debating whether to kill this idiot or hold him for arrest. Its something Manny is dealing with more and more. Killing or letting justice take its course. He catches the weasel and is about to kill him when he decides he just can't do it.Down in Miami a man is butchering and killing a couple. This couple, a man and his wife, just got married two days earlier. The man doing the killing and calling it art is careful with everything he does. After all he's been killing for years and has never been caught or even questioned. He's highly intelligent and his victims are killed to further his art. His creations are art in its greatest form. In his mind he's actually honoring his victims by making them a part of his art. At least thats how he see's it.Josh Corner and his BAU get the call to come to Miami. The Miami-Dade Police Department need all the help they can get on this one.So begins another fine read by Mercer. This one has Manny, Sophie her husband Dean Milkus and his forensic partner Alex Downs, a Downs who will be undergoing surgery to fit his new prosthetic hand and won't be in Miami, his beautiful wife Sharon who turns out to be way more than anyone knew, the newest member of the BAU team Belle Simmons, A Simmons who remembers an incident twenty years ago which turns out to be one helluva clue, a man named Tavant, another man named Grimes, Manny's wife Chloe, her Mother Haley Rose, Manny's daughter Jen, his son Ian, death, destruction, victims, friends, allies, a Manny who comes to a decision and Manny and the BAU fighting time and finally figuring the whole thing out.Five Stars one more time.

By Doc This is my fifth review of a Murcer novel and I find myself wondering what else can I say about this extraordinary author? He continues to write intriguing plots about characters you care for. To write about criminals who make Hannibal Lecter look tame. To follow characters whom we regulars have learned to love and then have the audacity to kill one or two of them off! How dare he!! Yet he does, knowing that death in the world of Manny Williams is a necessary feature and we need to come to grips with this fact.I know there will be another book, I only hope it is ASAP. Keep them coming Rick and know that we love you.Ken Morris

Black Powder Red Earth V6: Evergreen, by Jon Chang, Kane Smith

Review Jon Chang wraps BPRE around a realistic portrayal of a pair of PMC contractors in the not so near future Iraq...Just far enough ahead to see what is basically happening to Iraq now. Regional powers destabilizing Iraq until it splits apart, militias sweeping in during a power void, and Corporations taking advantage of it all to make a buck. I swear it's like Jon Chang was staring into a crystal ball looking at the future when he wrote this. It's almost eerie how accurate his portrayal of Iraq is in the few years down the timeline where this story takes place.- James Price, Death Valley Magazine

Exhilarating suspense thriller By A Customer While waiting for her divorce to be finalized from her cheating spouse, Mackenzie Morgan and her teenage daughter Bella take photographs of an abandoned fishery in an isolated part of the Appalachians. However, their solitude is disturbed when geologist Dell Shirley arrives on a horse accompanied by two dogs. Dell ties up Mac expecting her to die and abducts Bella.Refusing to sit idly by while her daughter is in trouble, Mac treks four miles although still tied up until she reaches a ranger. The police begin a search and rescue led by volunteer tracker Caleb Howell while Bella's dad Marlowe blames Mac and acts as the caring concerned father and martyr with the media. However, the seemingly random kidnapping runs closer to home as truths begin to surface, but the chances of Bella surviving her ordeal get slimmer by the second. This exhilarating suspense thriller with a romantic subplot that rightfully takes a back seat to the abduction will elate fans as the action never slows down until the final altercation. Fans will admire the courageous "superwoman" who is a lioness out to save her cub; on the other hand readers will hiss at her unsympathetic spouse who brings his latest bimbo to the Appalachians. The final twist will surprise the audience, but seems right as Gwen Hunter writes a tense search and hopefully rescue tale.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Sadistic Author By Betty Wilson Beamguard Anybody who would write a book like Shadow Valley ought to be horsewhipped. I lost hours of sleep reading that little thriller. Gwen Hunter must have a seriously sadistic streak. I think she enjoys torturing her readers with suspense, vicarious pain, and mayhem. And I must be a masochist, because I loved every minute of it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Should have read it sooner By Long Island Lady I'm a big fan of this author's Dr. Rae Lynch series so I was disappointed that her latest was not a Dr. Rae book. After having it sit on my shelf for months I finally read it. What a great read. It is a very engrossing thriller and it did not disappoint me at all. I liked the characters and I'm a big fan of secondary characters and this book had several I loved. I liked the look into the world of SAR and I'm glad it was the main focus of the book. There was a romance storyline but it was just enough to enjoy without being over done.I'm really glad that I finally read this book.

Four years. That's how long it took Californian playboy Michael Vickers to regain his memory and come home. Four years. That's how long Vickers spent battered, bruised and south of the border, following the attack which sought to end his life - all because he'd mistaken a mortal enemy for a friend. Or a lover. And now Vickers is looking for four years' worth of payback from the devil responsible for his near-demise. But within days of Vickers' return, a murder attempt is made on one of his suspects - and this time it succeeds. Enter a very shrewd detective, whose eyes are on everyone. Especially Vickers. In Stranger at Home, the second George Sanders mystery novel, we are taken to a world removed from the backstage comic mystery of Crime on My Hands, but nonetheless a milieu very familiar to the actor - Southern California in the 1940's. A world of stars and millionaires, but also vice, organized crime and shattered dreams. And Michael Vickers himself is a hero very much after the mould of Sanders' irresistibly attractive screen persona - gilded and charming, languid and pleasure-seeking... but with a steely, remorseless core.

Stranger At Home: A George Sanders Mystery, by George Sanders

Review "The characters are hard-boiled, the language colorful and the solution elusive." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch "A first class whodunit of the tough school." - Richmond Times-Dispatch "The characters are varied and intriguing, the tale moves along at a gallop and the style is crisp and effective." - Columbus Dispatch

About the Author George Sanders was born in St Petersburg in 1906. He left Russia in 1917 with his family, who settled in England and had George educated at Bedales and Brighton College. He made his British film debut in 1929, but it was in 1930’s Hollywood that he honed his distinctive, charming-yet-dangerous screen persona – the quintessential cad. Sanders co-starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent (both 1940), and went on to win an Academy Award for his signature role, that of Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950). He continued to work in films up until the year of his death in 1972. In the 1940’s, Sanders’ film-star status was the impetus for his two crime novels, both featuring recognizably Sanders-esque heroes: Crime on My Hands (1944) and Stranger at Home (1946). In 1960 came a third book: his autobiography, fittingly titled Memoirs of A Professional Cad in which the line between fiction and fact is blurred even more convincingly – and wittily – than in the novels. All three works are available as ebooks from Dean Street Press.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Nice short mystery By Geographer The book kept me guessing until the end, which is a good sign for this type of 1940s-era mystery. Not quite as dark as I like, but a diverting read. The length - about 160 pages - was perfect.

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good, standard mystery By ChoxieBlue This book was written to take advantage of the popularity of the British actor George Sanders, who was credited with writing the story. It was actually written by a woman named Leigh Brackett, who was more of a science fiction writer, but she does a good job here. The plot is simple. A man named Michael Vickers, on a trip with three buddies in Mexico, is assaulted, and disappears. He was never found, and people assume he has been killed. Of course, this is not the case. He comes back home to his life in Los Angeles after having been missing for four years, and determined to find out who tried to kill him. This book is fast reading, and a very typical 1940's pot-boiler. Michael Vickers has a beautiful wife, of course, and a large estate, and pots of money. And although it is somewhat pretentious in that regard, the story is fun, and it is not easy to figure out who actually was involved in the crime. There are a couple of cool red herrings, and a plot twist at the end, all of which make it a fun read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. OK LA Mystery By Bill Leigh Brackett as George Sanders in this one. In the Classical Mystery tradition, with a few more bullets flying, since it's LA rather than the English countryside. Man comes home after many years, after being reported dead, determined to find out whodunhim. Intrigue in rich, commercial (dissolute) society.

Just a Coincidence is book two in the DS Dave Slater Series The sleepy little Hampshire town of Tinton, isn't exactly the type of place where major crime occurs on a regular basis. In fact, the biggest cases DS Dave Slater and his colleagues have to deal with right now are those of a flasher, and an illiterate counterfeiter - and that one is going to be easy to wrap up, as they think they know who's responsible! In fact things are so quiet right now Slater has, at long last, taken the plunge and invited the bewitching Jelena on a date! But things suddenly change when a dog walker finds the severely battered body of a young woman out near a small patch of woodland known locally as the Haunted Copse. The first puzzle for Slater and colleague Norman Norman to solve is how exactly did the body get there? It couldn't have just dropped from the sky, could it? Then the dog who found the body comes bounding out of the Haunted Copse carrying what looks like a human femur. Before they know it, they have three dead bodies on their hands, and it soon becomes clear the three bodies are related. But with fifteen years between the murders, is this just a bizarre coincidence, or are the murders linked? With Slater and Norman in command, the team get to work. With one obvious suspect it seems it's just a matter of proving his guilt, but not every member of the team is as happy as they appear to be, and it's not long before tension between team members threatens to destroy their normal happy efficiency. And if all that wasn't enough to be dealing with, their simple, 'easy to solve' counterfeit case, begins to take on a life of its own, and they find the two cases seem to be overlapping, and it's fast becoming possible that there is actually more than one murderer, and it really is just a coincidence!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The plot isn't bad. The characterization isn't bad By Virginia E. Demarce The plot isn't bad. The characterization isn't bad. The writing style, unfortunately, is the utter reverse of "show, don't tell" as the writer's maxim. The narrative is stilted stylistically, takes place from the protagonist's POV, and spends really a lot of time musing about what's going on in Dave Slater's head. Unfortunately, his head is a rather boring place.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Strong characters, very tight plot By Auntie Annie Considering five stars to be an A, I would have to rate this book an A-. The writing is excellent and the plot very tight. I like the protagonist and the manner in which he relates to the other characters, many of which are fleshed out as well. I like the relationship they have with their superior, who in many books is made out to be either a tyrant or an imbecile. This superior is respected and has a good relationship with his men. The only problem I have with this book (that kept it from an A) is that several of the plot lines are left unresolved. I suppose this is the way it happens in real life, but I do like closure at the end of a book. Perhaps Ford is leaving those threads dangling so that he may return to them in a subsequent volume. I hope so.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Quick read, decent plot, but the writing needs improvement By magus_vir I genuinely enjoyed the plot, although the reader knows, early on, who the likely suspects are and how it's going to play out in the end. There was one episode, though, that made me fairly nauseous. Nothing gory, mind you, but something so disgusting and revolting that it may put you off eating for a day. I'm no prude, and, realistically I realize that such things may happen in the real world. You'll just have to read the book to find out for yourself.

In 1995 the streets of Los Angeles are being terrorized by Jake Babbage, a traffic cop who uses his position of power to rape and murder innocent women. On his way to court one day, Babbage sees Judge Daniel Hart. The two recognize each other, and the terrifying night of 19 years ago comes back to haunt the highly respected judge. The aftermath of the encounter brings long-buried secrets to light and tests the moral fiber of Judge Hart, who has committed himself to protecting those victimized by the very crimes of which he is now accused.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Judge not, less you be judged. Proverb By michael a. draper Did you ever wonder about the background of some of the judges who pass judgment on others? In "Grant of Immunity" Danny Hart was a teenager who was talked into joining his friend Snake for a night of fun. Danny was age fifteen. He used to babysit for the two little children of Snake's girlfriend, Sarah. On this night, Snake was showing off and after smoking a bit of weed, things got rough. Snake made sexual demands of Sarah and Danny wanted no part of it but Snake threatened to cut her if Danny didn't agree. By the end of the night, Sarah had been murdered by Snake and he had a knife with Danny's prints on it.Years later, Jake is a Marine vet and had worked for the Chilean secret police. He has joined the police department and is a sergeant in the patrol department using his position to demonstrate power and make women submit to his cruel desires. He pulls women over for minor or made up traffic violations and then forces them to do what he wants. The reader hopes someone will stand up to him but his victims are chosen for their submissiveness and are intimidated. We have seen crooked police on the TV show, The Shield and are familiar with some characters in Joseph Wambaugh novels so the reader doesn't know what to expect. Not to reveal plot, Snake (John Babbage) finally picks a woman to exercise his power over but after beginning to have his way with her, he gets a radio call from the department and has to leave.Later, this person reports him and the drama boosts up.A case goes to court and Danny Hart is now a judge and he and Babbage have a confrontation. The plot is very realistic and the author who has over fifteen years of judicial experience, weaves an exciting, fast moving and realistic plot that is hard to put down.In a case of good against evil, Hart takes a stand but how will he come out of this? The courtroom action and the behind the scenes moves by the prosecution and defense make this a story that will be hard to put down. The ending took a bit to reach the finale but otherwise I felt that this was an excellent read and totally recommend it.4*+ but not 5I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Kralik Judges, lawyers and other legal professionals have an instinctual desire to turn to what has come to be classified as the legal thriller. Although many were awakened to the genre by the early work John Grisham or Scott Turow, there are predecessors, such as Judge Robert Travers’ Anatomy of a Murder. For legal professionals, the genre offers the immersion into someone else’s legal nightmare and factual enigmas as an escape from one’s own. But the books also appeal to another hunger, a hunger felt by a broader audience, the lay audience craving for the interaction of the justice system, whether flawed or idealized, with true evil. The justice system itself is a character in these works, tragically flawed by its own realities and hampered by contradictions borne of political governance and human folly. It is an unending source of drama as it seeks to somehow engage and react to the more powerful innovations of the creative and perverse efforts to escape it.While there is thus an abiding hunger for this type of drama, and an unending number of efforts to sate it, there is a dearth of truly satisfying responses. Most legal professionals hopefully pick up these books only to throw them away halfway through out of a complete disgust with the factual inaccuracies, legal absurdities or just downright poor writing. Many are written only to pay back grudges against thinly disguised adversaries. Even most offerings from established authors whose works keep getting published under the heading of the genre fail to satisfy any of the basic needs that the genre should deliver. In fact, success at one of these books often seems to preclude success at another, for such success takes the authors further and further away from the system that provides the essential source of their dramas. Many later efforts start out well, and then sink to absurd lengths and phony devices that end the plot in time for the publisher’s deadline.Garret Holms’ Grant of Immunity is the exception. It is a truly satisfying, classic legal thriller. It is fast paced, well written, and professionally plotted. It delivers page-turning worry over the safety and well being of its heroes, and anguish at the apparent success of its villains. And it has contains what all of these books strive for, and almost never achieve: dramatic, yet realistic courtroom scenes in which the rules of evidence and criminal procedure are observed, but imperfectly followed, just as they are in the real world. You could read hundreds of legal thrillers, and not find better, more authentic courtroom conflict. For the legal professional this is a treasure—escape without the anguishing delays in the hallway or the tedium of actual transcripts.Garret Holms is clearly a pseudonym. The background information on the author indicates that he has over fifteen years of “on-the-job experience.” The book indicates otherwise. Only someone with a lifetime of experience could accurately plot the approach and moves and countermoves of prosecutors, defenders, judges and police officerS in the way this author has done. Only a lifetime of experience would allow each development to have a response that is both legally plausible and dramatically satisfying. My advice is to buy the book while it is still available at this price and before it is picked up for publication in more expensive formats.John KralikAuthor of A Simple Act of Gratitude

By Grady Harp Author Garret Holms makes his literary debut with a startlingly terrifying and keenly written novel GRANT OF IMMUNITY. Garret knows his material - he is a judge and a criminal trial expert with more than fifteen years of on-the-job experience. He has worked all aspects of the justice system, from superior court judge to defense attorney to criminal prosecutor. Holms has tried every type of criminal case imaginable, including special circumstances homicide, sexual assault, police corruption, and gangland murder. All of this exposure and experience comes into play in this top of the line thriller.Garret opens his book with one of the most grizzly prodromes to a murder rape this reader has encountered. It is supposed to be a bit of criminal history from 1976 but the manner in which Garret writes it is so immediate that the tension is palpably Now. The overall view of the book is that a crooked cop manipulates the justice system to wreak havoc on the lives of a judge, a fellow officer, and a young woman. But the synopsis is excellent and saves the potential reader time to understand what is ahead: `It's 1976, Los Angeles. Sarah Collins, a young mother of two, is brutally raped and murdered at the Hollywood Reservoir. For nineteen years, the murder remains unsolved and the case goes cold. In 1995, the streets of Los Angeles are being terrorized by Jake (known form the introduction as `Snake') Babbage, a traffic cop who uses his position of power to rape and murder innocent women. On his way to court one day, Babbage sees Judge Daniel Hart. The two recognize each other, and the terrifying night of nineteen years ago comes back to haunt the highly respected judge. The aftermath of the encounter brings long-buried secrets to light and tests the moral fiber of Judge Hart, who has committed himself to protecting those victimized by the very crimes of which he is now accused.'Aside from the in the moment opening - the rape and murder of Sarah by Snake with Danny narrowly escaping complicity - the major part of the book is a courtroom drama - and who to better write this than the man who lives there. This is thriller writing at it finest and we are undoubtedly going to be reading more from Garret Holms. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 15

He's sick and tired of being sick and tired. If it made any sense, he'd disclose all the secrets he's so carefully concealed. But he knows that won't rid his city of the scores of sick, sadistic bullies who lie, steal and rape. Enough! No more hiding! He is bent on revenge. Is he right? Or is he just as evil as those with whom he plays the Grim Reaper? In the end, it is up to you, the reader, to decide.

Revenge, No Regrets, by Judi McMahon

About the Author Judi McMahon, a native New Yorker is an author of how-to books published by leading publishers like Dell and Harper Collins during the 1980s. She was also a newspaper columnist and reporter, as well as the entertainment editor and restaurant reviewer for a Manhattan weekly and wrote for such diversified publications as NEW YORK MAGAZINE, CATHOLIC NEW YORK and THE STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE. In 1994, after a heart-breaking divorce from the man she married twice (she went back for more punishment!) she decided to adopt a child. (You can read all about her life in her novelized memoir, IF THEY ASK ME I COULD WRITE A BOOK). The most beautiful gift she ever received was Valentina, from an orphanage in Russia who came to the U.S. after the adoption went through to live with the only mother she would ever know -- Judi. (She had been left in the hospital at birth.) "She came from my heart instead of my stomach," Judi proudly states. Valentina is now a beautiful 27 year old multi-talented young woman who lives in Tucson, Arizona where she and Judi both moved in August of 2001, just a month before 9/11. Valentina continued her education, and only recently completed an award-winning degree from the Aveda Institute, and is beginning her journey in the hair and beauty world. Judi continues to write books, mostly novels, mostly in the women's interest genre. You can see and order her last three on Amazon.com or Kindle. Her latest book is a mystery thriller titled REVENGE, NO REGRETS. She also continues to run her own holistic skin care product website, RebornAngel.com, where her very own developed organic formula, REBORN Skin Renewer is sold. (Some of her prior how-to books and columns were based on research and study on aromatherapy as well as on beauty and health subject matter.) Life is good. If only, there wasn't so much hate in the world, so much prejudice, so many people who suffer from poverty and wars, it would be a beautiful place for all.

By Kimmy Revenge, No Regrets sounded like the kind of book my brother would like; he is a big mystery reader and also liked both Breaking Bad and also the Dexter TV series so I ordered it. But guess what? When it came in it looked so darn interesting, I opened it up and began reading it myself. Really good read. Only thing is I would warn anyone who is queasy about gory parts to skip one of the killings...chapters 9 through 16. It's about the torture and killing of an evil child molester, who is also a fat NYC detective...Now, I'm giving it to my brother to read...I think he'll even dig the vengeance taken out on the molester. Since there's 56 chapters in all, I'd skip them!

I enjoyed every page....loved Aidan O'Neill, and like the author describing him as looking like the English actor, Matthew Goode. He is dreamy in the Good Wife!Seamus O'Neill is really an ugly character -- but he does sound like far too many corrupt politicians who in this case is the Police Commissioner. Glad he gets his due in the end! Hope this isn't a spoiler...sure anyone who reads Revenge, No Regrets, will agree with me. Anyway, a very good novel that would make a great made-for-TV-movie!!

Enjoyed the story and the two main characters,Aidan O'Neill and Casey Wagner. I agree, there's just too much violence all over the worldthese days, with ISIS and the other madmen. In this case, I won't judge Aidan harshly for hisseeking revenge. Sounds like his power-driven father actually murdered his mother, never mindall the corruption going on. I highly recommend this novel.Ruben Betancourt

I was so happy to have a few days with nothing on the schedule to dive into this fun and touching mystery. I really enjoyed it so much. I laughed out loud nearly every page because the author has such a creative and funny way of wording things. He also knows how to word things in such a way that evoke deep emotion--I found myself tearing up several times during the book. I truly loved the character development and the characters in the book--I really was rooting for every single person and that was so refreshing. I was so touched by the characters' journeys. A book that I can laugh and cry and fall in love with the characters? Well, that is pretty much my favorite thing ever! The story is very engaging and I was truly wondering how the mystery was going to be solved. What a fun, sweet, kind, hilarious, and age-appropriate mystery for kids! No gory stuff, no violence, nothing that you wouldn't want your kids to read. Just well-written humor and a great, realistic story line. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to everyone! I can't wait for the sequel!

By ECasper This is the second time I have used Robert Walker's courses to pass Securities exams. Prior to using these, I struggled with understanding not only the material, but the way that questions were posed. Mr. Walker was able to break down the questions in a way that allows you to understand how to come up with the correct answer - even if you aren't positive of which answer is correct. His workbooks are fun and that is a hard term to use when it comes to securities exams! I got the highest score on the exam I took using his materials and expect the same results this time. Do the work, follow his plan and you will succeed in Passing the 7!

34 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Page Turner! By Jaidis Shaw Allie is a disturbed teenager who has been through more tragedy than any one person should have to endure. Her brother looked after her while their mother’s mind deteriorated but now her brother has left her too. Now it’s up to her and she does whatever she must to survive. She is finally placed into foster care and is starting to question everything that she was told growing up. Is she able to trust her new foster mother? Is she starting to suffer from the same mental illness that claimed both her mother and brother? Death has always followed Allie and now that dead bodies are starting to appear again, she wonders if this time it may just be enough to claim her. This book was such a page-turner! The author revealed the pieces to the puzzle at the right time to give hints as to who was involved in the recent murders but yet kept me guessing until the big reveal. The pacing of the story was wonderful and I eagerly awaited what was coming next. Allie was a flawed individual, as are some other characters, and it helped me relate to them. This book shines the light on mental disorders and how life can be affected by them. I wasn’t aware until after I was done reading the book and posting my review to Goodreads that this is actually the second book of a series. Now that I’ve been introduced to these characters, I must pick up the first book so I can get a better look at what they went through before getting to this point. I would also like to note that even though I haven’t read book one, Never Smile at Strangers, that it in no way hindered me from enjoying and understanding Ugly Young Thing.I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. while this is a continuation it also could easily be classified as a stand alone By kylie rose This continuation of Never Smile at Strangers by Jennifer Janes is fabulous for so many reasons!First, while this is a continuation it also could easily be classified as a stand alone. You learn about Allie in NSAS, though not towards the end of the book. Her role is minor, but the impact is huge. When growing with Allie in Ugly Young Thing you hope that the evils that haunted her in the past are gone. As time continues on girls begin dying, at the hands of a vicious murderer. She feels she's to blame for this reoccurring evil, but is she?Throughout this book I was dying to know more. In the chapters alternating between Allie, Miss Bitty, and "him" you find yourself truly captivated while trying to figure out who is really to blame here.Jennifer does a wonderful job of misleading the readers, letting their minds wonder to characters who may or may not be guilty. No matter how you feel throughout the book, you are definitely going to be shocked at the ending. It finally pieces everything together. There was even one point where I was babysitting alone, (the child was already sleeping) and my heart is racing. While I know it's just fiction I feel like it's real, and it's happening to me. Kinda creeped out, but in the best way.I have to speculate there will be another book coming, hopefully soon! She definitely leaves you wanting more!

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Full of suspense and intrigue! By Christina Decker I was fortunate enough to receive this book as an ARC from Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. In fact, I didn't even realize it was Book #2 until after I had already started reading it, but I was still able to pick up most of the back story. I don't usually find myself reading a lot of thriller/mystery but this book caught my attention and hooked me immediately.Allie comes from a very unfortunate background. Her mother was a prostitute, murderer and mentally ill. Her brother was mentally ill and a murderer as well so it's not a shock that Allie would be worried that she was going to end up just like the two of them. Upon Allie's return to Louisiana she is quickly taken under the wing of Miss Bitty who wants to take care of Allie in every way possible. However with her past Allie has trouble trusting anyone and is always suspicious when someone wants to do something nice for her. But that won't stop Miss Bitty. She even involves some of her old and new friends to help the young girl.Meanwhile there is a killer on the loose that is stalking women for the purpose of killing them. And its clear early on that he is definitely mentally ill and very methodical. In fact, he has even been watching Allie very closely. This was a great book! Full of mystery and intrigue. The characters were well developed and Allie was exactly what you would expect from a girl with such a traumatic background. Her dialogue, inner thoughts, and outward actions were so real. Jennifer was able to be blunt about some very real issues in today's society, and some accounts were more descriptive than I was expecting. I actually found myself taking notes trying to connect and compare characters and even jotting down theories and coincidental facts all in hopes of figuring out what was really going on. And I applaud Jennifer for making me second guess every single theory by writing such a great thriller that had me guessing right up until the end. Definitely worth 5 out of 5 stars!

Detective Olivia Watson squatted down beside the body with the bashed-in head lying on the plush office carpet. The pool of blood looked fresh enough. The alleged murder weapon, a civic volunteerism trophy from the dead man's own desk, had already been bagged and packed away by the CSI trading notes with the medical examiner nearby. A uniformed officer and two building security guards were holding back a bevy of shocked and grieving office staff from the Kober & Associates PR firm, as well as curious onlookers from other businesses in the building beyond the yellow crime scene tape that blocked off the victim's outer office door. The two Kansas City PD detectives on the far side of the room interviewing the distraught secretary who'd discovered her boss's body after her half-day spa appointment seemed to have the crime scene well under control. So why call in representatives from the Fourth Precinct's Cold Case Squad?Olivia rested her forearms on the thighs of her dark wash jeans and studied the sixtyish man's still features again. The glass-and-steel high-rise in downtown Kansas City was almost as new as the murder itself. She was used to working cases with pictures out of dusty boxes and autopsy reports that raised a lot of unanswered questions. She'd worked with skeletal remains and mummified corpses and alleged victims whose bodies had never been found at all. Most people assumed the Cold Case Squad was an easier gig than working a fresh investigation. She liked to think of it as a smarter assignment, requiring more insight and diligence than other divisions at KCPD.Olivia was a third generation cop, like two of her three brothers. And the third one worked in the medical examiner's office. After two years in a uniform, five years in vice and the past year working cold cases, she'd learned that killers who'd eluded capture and thought they'd gotten away with murder often proved to be more devious and more dangerous than any other criminal out there. It was her job to track down those killers and finally get justice for those forgotten victims whose memory often died with their closest family and friends. So why was she here to assist two perfectly capable detectives when there was a stack of her own investigations back at HQ to sort through?"There must be a connection to one of our dead file cases. But if there is, I don't see it yet." She glanced up at her new partner, Jim Parker—back from the dead himself after a particularly harrowing undercover assignment for the Missouri Bureau of Investigation. "Do you?"Jim's green eyes surveyed the room the way she had. "I recognize Ron Kober from the newspapers. Besides owning a Top 50 company here in KC, he helped get Adrian McCoy elected to the State Senate a few years back. Looks like he was doing pretty well on his own, without the senator."Olivia arched a dark eyebrow. "Until today."She liked Jim well enough, respected his reputation as a cop, appreciated that he got her sarcastic sense of humor. But after that humiliating debacle with her last partner, learning to trust him was hard. Thankfully, Jim was a newlywed, completely crazy about his wife, Natalie, and showed nothing but a friendly professional interest in his relationship with Olivia. Still, she found herself thinking about her words before she spoke to him, guarding her thoughts and feelings, which was no mean task for a woman with her volatile Irish roots."A man with this kind of money probably has plenty of enemies," Jim suggested. An angle which she was sure the lead detectives were already exploring. Still didn't explain why she and Jim were here. She looked back down at the body, willing the corpse to speak and share his secrets. But she wasn't psychic and dead men didn't talk. However…Her eyes went past Kober's body to a scrap of torn paper underneath the desk. She snapped a picture with her cell phone before reaching over the dead body to pick it up with the sterile gloves she wore.Jim crouched down beside her. "What did you find?"Olivia turned the tiny square over between her thumb and index finger. "Four numbers. I don't know. It may just be a piece of trash.""Looks like a torn-up piece of stationery." Jim picked up the wastebasket beside the desk and set it between them to sort through its contents. But there were no other little hand-torn shreds like this one. "Could be the last digits of a phone number."Jim replaced the wastebasket and stood. "Or part of an address or social security number.""Or a locker number or part of a combination lock." Olivia straightened beside him, spotting a pad of dovegray paper on the desk that matched the piece in her hand. She picked it up and angled it in the light to see if she could read any indentations in the surface. But there were too many marks from previous notes to make out anything specific. "Maybe it's just a testament to their housekeeping service not doing its job, and isn't related to the crime at all."Just in case, though, she jotted the 3620 in her notebook before handing the scrap of paper and Kober's scratch pad over to the CSI.She tucked her own notepad into the pocket of her short leather jacket and peeled off her gloves, following Jim to the door. "So if this isn't our case, why are we here?"Jim nodded to the detectives hovering over the weeping woman across the room. "Hendricks and Kincaid are taking lead on Kober's murder here. Sawyer Kincaid called us in as a courtesy."Frowning, Olivia stuffed the gloves into the back pocket of her jeans. "And he didn't say why?""He just said it was a directive from higher up." He touched her shoulder to indicate he was taking a detour. "Looks like they're wrapping up that interview. I'll go ask if they can make sense of any of this yet."While her golden-haired partner crossed the room, Olivia indicated she'd head on downstairs and meet him at the car.She shouldn't have acknowledged the visceral impact of the short black hair and chiseled cheekbones of the man waiting just outside the office door as she passed him. Admitting any kind of gut-kick attraction to a man was, at least, an inconvenience, and, at most, a huge mistake. Her relationship with Marcus had taught her that. But the man's piercing blue gaze locked on and followed her through the doorway. The skin at the nape beneath her short hair tingled with awareness at his interest. Only, she wasn't sure if it was sensual nerves fluttering to attention, or an alarm going off. Either way, she wasn't about to flutter for any man, and she wasn't going to ignore those survival instincts that warned her of danger.Olivia stopped in the middle of the assistant's office and turned to face Mr. Tall Dark and Staring. "May I help you?"He pulled back the front of his tan corduroy sport coat and tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans, assuming a casual stance she wouldn't match. "I can tell you why you're here, Detective Watson."Her chin jerked up ever so slightly at the stranger calling her by name. Un-uh. That wasn't an advantage she'd allow. Her hand instinctively came to rest over the Glock holstered to her belt. "Do I know you, Mister…?""Not really." The man straightened from the wall where he'd been leaning, and she could see he stood a good five or six inches over her five-foot-seven-inch height. "Ron Kober is the man my fiancée Danielle Reese was getting inside information from for a story she was writing when she was murdered six years ago.""Danielle Reese?" Why did that name sound familiar? Didn't matter. This guy was still a couple steps ahead of her in the conversation, and she didn't like it. "You didn't answer my question. Who are you?""Gabriel Knight."Was that supposed to mean something to her? That deep, succinct announcement made it sound as though he thought he was somebody important. But she'd have remembered a face like that. Not exactly handsome with all those sharp, unsmiling angles, but definitely interesting.Olivia blinked, silently reprimanding herself for even noticing such irrelevance. It was more important to note that she saw no sign that he was wearing a gun, and since he hadn't flashed a badge to identify himself, he couldn't be a cop. Gabriel Knight must be a curiosity seeker who'd probably lied to the uniformed guard about having some kind of information on the case so he could get close enough to see the dead body."Sir, did one of the detectives ask you to come past the crime scene tape for questioning?" He didn't answer. Proof enough for her that Gabriel Knight was trespassing on the crime scene. She thumbed over her shoulder to the hallway. "Then you can't be in here.""I've got press credentials." He tugged at the cord hanging around his neck and pulled a plastic card from his shirt pocket. "I'm covering the murder for the Journal!''A reporter? "Yeah, well my badge outranks your little piece of plastic. If you'll wait out front with the other reporters, the press liaison will be downstairs to give a briefing in a few minutes." She took him by the arm and turned to escort him into the hallway, but the man didn't budge."You need to talk to me." His voice was low and articulate, and, without being a breathy whisper, was for her ears alone. "I have information on this case. That's why the officer out front let me through.""Then you should talk to Detective Kincaid or Detective Hendricks." She released him to point out the big man with the dark hair and the black man with the diamond stud in his left earlobe in the other room. "I can introduce you when they're through with their witness."But Gabriel Knight grabbed her elbow and pulled her back beside him. "You may not read the paper, but I know who you are, Detective Watson. You and your partner are part of the cold case team, working older, unsolved crimes. Like the murder of Dani Reese. She was an investigative reporter, a colleague of mine. The woman I loved. She was found dead at an abandoned warehouse down on the river docks six years ago. Shot through the head like some common criminal. I'm the one who called Chief Taylor and suggested he send a team from your department here this afternoon."Olivia jerked her arm from his grasp."You called the Fourth Precinct chief?" Who'd filtered the request down through Sawyer Kincaid and on to Jim and her. She hated anyone who felt they were entitled enough to break the rules of standard police procedure whenever it suited them. She could do the low, threatening voice, too. "You know, we have real work to do, Mr. Knight. KCPD is not at your beck and call to dig up sidebars for whatever story you're working on.""Trust me, Detective, there is nothing more real to me than finding Dani's killer. If your people won't do it, I will."Her people? Cops? Like her friends and father and grandfather and brothers? The same men and women who'd solved her own mother's brutal slaying two decades earlier? This guy was bashing them? And then something else he said registered, cooling the defensive anger that had flashed through her veins. The woman I loved. She empathized with the kind of senseless violence, anger and grief Gabriel Knight had suffered more than he knew. It only took one deep breath, one thought of her mother's smiling face, to remember her sensitivity training. "Every victim believes the death of his or her loved one is our most important case. I'm sorry for your loss. But if the department hasn't made enough progress on Ms. Reese's death to suit you, it's only because there haven't been any substantial leads. Not because we've given up.""This is a lead. There has to be a connection to Kober.Find it.""I promise you, if we get new information on your fiancée's death, we'll look into it.""Coming from you, that's not terribly reassuring."Bristling at the dig that felt inexplicably personal, coming from a man she'd never met, Olivia gestured toward the yellow tape. She bit down on the urge to demand an explanation and invited him to walk beside her. "We never give up on a case. Ever. But some take longer to solve than others. It's a matter of prioritization. We review cases every day and try to focus our time, money and manpower where it can do the most good.""You're preaching departmental protocol, Detective Watson. And that's not a good enough answer." He stopped at the outer door, dipping his head slightly as he faced her one more time. "You find out who killed Kober, and I guarantee you'll find a lead on Dani's murderer. It may even be the same man who committed both crimes."With that warning, he ducked beneath the tape and stalked away. Olivia shook her head at the uniformed officer's questioning look about whether or not he needed to stop Knight before he pushed his way through the gathering of onlookers and got on the elevator. She was still processing the oddly charged and cryptic encounter when she felt a tap at her elbow. She nodded to Jim and he lifted the crime scene tape for her to exit in front of him. "You know who you were talking to, don't you?""Yeah. He said his name was Gabriel Knight. He's a reporter.""Not just any reporter." They stepped onto the elevator and Jim pushed the button for the ground floor. "Gabe Knight writes the Crime Beat column for the Kansas City Journal.''''Her instincts about men must still be out of whack after dumping Marcus. Otherwise, she'd have pieced together the name with the clues he'd dropped."He's the guy who wrote all those editorials about KCPD not being able to catch the Rose Red Rapist?" And when the task force did finally catch the creep and put him on trial, there hadn't been one word of praise or apology, merely a recitation of facts and something like, "About damn time. " Olivia groaned at her ineptitude as she walked out with Jim. Somehow she felt as if she'd betrayed her brethren cops by even having a conversation with the department's most outspoken critic. "And I was nice to him. Well, I was civil. He thinks Kober's murder is related to the unsolved death of his fiancée a few years back. Danielle Reese? He's the one who got us invited to the crime scene."They circled the gathering of television cameras and reporters on their way to her SUV. She felt Knight's blue eyes following her from the crowd awaiting the press conference as they crossed the street, but studiously ignored the urge to meet his watchful gaze."He probably approached you because he thought you'd be softhearted and sympathetic to his cause." She glared at Jim over the hood of the car before they both climbed in. "Clearly, he doesn't know you very well."

This time we get to see the cold case dept. It's the first book in the series and I can't wait to read the next one! We have seen Gabe in several of her previous books. He's an investigative reporter and has been hard on the KCPD with less than flattering articles in the newspaper. In this book, however, we get to read about his backstory and it's a good one! His fiancé was killed 6 years ago and he feels the KCPD didn't do enough to catch the killer - he was never found. Enter Olivia, who is a 3rd generation cop and a recent murder ties into Gabe's fiancé's murder so they begin to work together to see if they can find out who killed both people. Gabe begins seeing the police dept. in a new light and Olivia sees Gabe in a new light also. The story is a good one and the action keeps you turning the pages! Some previous characters from Julie's books pop up and that's always fun but it is a stand alone book if you haven't read her other books. I really enjoyed this book, especially the character development and the action!

By Books And Spoons Blog Amazing chemistry between the characters, thrilling mystery to be solved, and detective in need to get her trust to fellow teammates, as well as men in general, back in place.Gabe and Olivia had a believable connection, attraction that grew fast, but was deep and true. The understanding and respect they had for each other, the smooth team work they did together, moving and thinking as a solid unit was a joy to read, and experience. They are hot together, they heat up the sheets, and hospital offices, conference rooms or a car... Yes, the heat level was steaming, but authentic and credible, as well as swoon worthy beautiful. The mystery kept me guessing, and clued into my Kindle. The hunt for a killer in six year old cold case suddenly heats up, the danger is palpable, and lives are in peril. There are intense scenes of the hunt for the clues, as well as running for their lives. The ending is satisfying and complete, yet some of the questions still need answers, and as part of a long running series, even though easily to be read as a stand alone novel, those questions are in my mind, and I can't wait for the next installment in the series, coming out in August.Very well written murder mystery, with a beautifully flowing story that captivated me and engaged my mind, and made me connect with the characters~ Five Spoons!

Olivia is a detective on the cold case squad. She comes from a long family tradition of law enforcement and had recently transferred into the cold case squad after as messy breakup with her former partner. Gabe is a highly opinionated reporter who has made it his business to publicly bash the police after Olivia's father failed to solve the murder of the woman he was engaged to years before. When a new murder links back to the cold murder case, Olivia and her partner are called in, and Gabe does everything he can to insinuate himself into the investigation.Danger follows Olivia and Gabe every step of the way. Someone else is also following Olivia and spying on her. She suspects her former partner but keeps her suspicions to herself. As the Gabe and Olivia get closer to finding the killer, they found themselves growing closer to each other. Gabe's opinion of the police force begins to change as does their opinion of him. The unlikely pairing has police and reporter working side by side to finally solve the cold case.I enjoyed the story and the characters. The book had plenty of action and nice chemistry. I received a copy for review from Net Galley.

From the award-winning author of There Was an Old Woman comes a riveting tale of domestic noir, infused with old Hollywood folklore and glamour, set in a town rife with egotism and backstabbing and where fame and infamy are often interchangeable.

Los Angeles 1986: When Deirdre Unger arrived in Beverly Hills to help her bitter, disappointed father sell his dilapidated house, she discovers his lifeless body floating face down in the swimming pool. At first, Deirdre assumes her father’s death was a tragic accident. But the longer she stays in town, the more she suspects that it is merely the third act in a story that has long been in the making.

The sudden re-surfacing of Deirdre’s childhood best friend Joelen Nichol—daughter of the legendary star Elenor “Bunny” Nichol—seems like more than a coincidence. Back in 1958, Joelen confessed to killing her movie star mother’s boyfriend. Deirdre happened to be at the Nichols house the night of the murder—which was also the night she suffered a personal tragedy of her own. Could all of these events be connected?

Her search to find answers forces Deirdre to confront a truth she has long refused to believe: beneath the slick veneer of Beverly Hills lie secrets that someone will kill to keep buried.

A Mystery and Character Analysis All Rolled Into One By Silver's Reviews How could coming home to help your father get the house ready to sell turn into such a nightmare?Deirdre dutifully said she would help her father with the house, but when she arrived, she found him at the bottom of the swimming pool. When did this happen? Who could have done this? Could she have done it and not realized it considering her past that she was just finding out about?NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT was quite gripping and marvelously suspenseful. All of the things that were happening made me wonder if they were really by chance or if someone had planned them to frame Deirdre. After all, Deirdre's brother was sound asleep in their childhood home when she arrived. And what was it with folks from her past coming out of the woodwork and secrets about what actually happened the night of her car accident being revealed? The characters were quite colorful with most of them on the untrustworthy side. They all seemed likely suspects in the murder and subsequently the garage fire. Deirdre seemed to be the only honest one and the one being blamed.I really enjoyed NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT. The suspense began with the first few paragraphs, and it didn't stop.NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT was a mystery and character analysis all rolled into one.If you enjoy uncertainty, excitement, and tension at its finest, don't miss reading NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT.NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT was ohhh so good and a book I couldn't wait to get back to. 5/5This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher in return for an honest review.

I loved the characters and the storyline and it captured my attention from page one. As usual I have read way passed my bedtime because I just needed to find out how it would end. This was my first book by Hallie Ephron but it certainly won't be my last, great read, very entertaining.

The Shadows Below the Bright Lights By Rhonda Lane When Deidre goes to her hometown of Beverly Hills to help her has-been screenwriter dad pack up the old family home, she finds him at the bottom of the swimming pool. Then, things get worse. The past, which has drained these characters like a hungry ghost, doubles down with a vengeance. The Hollywood setting comes alive as we see the collision between human emotions and public image. I finished this page-turner a few days ago, but I can't stop thinking about the characters and the situations. If you have a book club, this book offers a lot of meaty questions for lively discussion. BTW, if you have a Kindle or just the app, don't miss the prequel short story "Photoplay." If you've already read the short story, you'll be tempted to re-read it for clues. I did, and reading both deepens the experience.
