Crossing the country and international waters while plagued by the growing menace of flesh-eating zombies, Carlie finds herself in a race against time on a mission that exposes a secret experiment borne from the Cold War. By John Podlaski, author of Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel After completing the first book in this series and writing a review, I quickly downloaded book #2 and got into it. When finished, I thought I'd wait until completing the series and then write individual reviews for the four books. Well guess what? I couldn't do it! So, I'm resorting to writing a single review that can be used across the entire series.Through this series, JT Sawyer takes readers along on these special missions to find a cure that will rid the planet of this lethal virus. Each book has its share of zombies, gore, evil humans, mixed in with a smidgeon of hope and camaraderie. We'll see these primary characters grow strong and become fierce warriors as time moves forward in the storyline. Even the president's daughter, Aliza, transforms from a young, selfish and spoiled college student to a skilled fighter, and Jarred, the thief and smart-ass, becomes likeable. We'll see evil, ruthless people who want to rule the world and think nothing of human lives or preservation of it along with a special breed of zombies which are powerful, super human, extremely fast and vicious killers. The final book takes readers to Japan where the inhabitants suffered from Legionnaires Disease before the pandemic and zombies are much more dangerous, smarter and feral then those in the U.S.These special teams led by Shane and Carlie are placed into extreme circumstances and must work together for the mission success above everything else. At times, team members find it difficult to continue with the plan and mission when one of their own is in trouble, and learn that sacrifices must sometime be made for the sake of the mission. The stories are intense, plausible and real page turners. Readers will find themselves cheering for the good guys and feel the sorrow when losing a team member. This is a series that I highly recommend for zombie lovers and readers of this genre. Now that I've finished, I feel like I lost a special friend. Mr. Sawyer is a fantastic writer and I will surely look into more of his work.John Podlaski, author"Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel"and "When Can I Stop Running"

Overall, a fantastic second book in the series! What is annoying, however, is how the infected persons are classified. Early on it's stated that they "walk the knife's edge" between alive and dead. Hence it makes sense labeling them as mutants. Whereas the more than occasional reference to them as the undead makes no sense, as they are not yet dead. It's like the phrase, "someone has one foot in the grave"....they are not yet dead.

By Jules Carl Thrilling story set with familiar characters that engrosses you up to the end, leaving you wanting more! I simply cannot believe JT Sawyer is an indie writer, he tells a great story, differently than so many others I have had the pleasure of reading! Cannot wait to read the next one! Coming from someone like me, living in the middle of fahking nowhere, anything that can entertain me and keep me from losing my mind, is superb!!!

Potshot, the fourth McMorrow mystery, delves deep into backwoods pot-growing and drug-dealing and the damage that comes when big, urban traffickers enter the picture. Jack alternates between the back-to-landers living communally on the outskirts of Florence, Maine, and confrontations with urban gangsters moving in on the product—and the people who Jack comes to know. Cronies at a county fair, an assassination attempt, and hostages are only a few of the challenges McMorrow has to face in this fast-paced addition to the McMorrow legacy. Library Journal says, “Along with snappy dialog that propels the story, Boyle presents an ensemble of likable characters. A sure thing for anyone who has enjoyed Robert Parker’s Spenser.”

Pot Shot (Jack Mcmorrow Mystery), by Gerry Boyle

Amazon.com Review Gerry Boyle's uncanny eye for the dangers that can lie just beneath the sleepy surfaces of rural Maine makes his fourth book about freelance journalist Jack McMorrow a marvelously mordant mystery. It's not hard to swallow the back story that the impulsive McMorrow gave up a job with the New York Times to savor the charms and rigors of northern New England; he takes the same kinds of chances here as he gets involved with a strange bunch of advocates for legal marijuana. More McMorrow memoirs in paperback include Bloodline, Deadline and Lifeline.

From Library Journal In Boyle's fourth offering (following Lifeline, Putnam, 1996), the characters are fully realized, and the plot, if a bit contrived, moves along believably enough. Boyle has a wonderful sense of place?in this case, Maine, where Jack McMorrow has fled to escape the workaholic drive that led him to become a top reporter for the New York Times. Now he works as a freelancer, which leads him into places most reporters avoid. McMorrow is enlisted by a group of old hippies to do a story on the legalization of marijuana. What appears to be a worthy cause?and a quick $300 paycheck?quickly escalates into confrontations with violent gangsters. A parallel story involves McMorrow's love interest, Roxanne, a social worker who confronts danger as she attempts to rescue children from abusive parents. Along with snappy dialog that propels the story, Boyle presents an ensemble of likable characters. A sure thing for anyone who has enjoyed Robert Parker's Spenser novels.?Terrill Persky, Woodridge P.L., Ill.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Jack McMorrow gave up the journalistic fast track for freelancing in Prosperity, Maine, and spending time with Roxanne, a beautiful Portland social worker. While attending a fair celebrating country life, Bobby Mullaney, a glib, likable hippie promoting marijuana legalization, catches McMorrow's attention as a possible story subject. But then Bobby disappears, apparently the victim of a drug deal gone bad, and the reporter must pursue a circuitous story to its dangerous conclusion. Author Gerry Boyle is a Maine journalist, and he knows his patch. His central Maine falls somewhere between the stereotype of laconic Yankees saying, "Ayuh" and fanciful mean streets in the woods. Potshot is the fourth installment in the McMorrow series, which deserves much wider recognition than it has yet received. Spread the word. Thomas Gaughan

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An overlooked author By A Customer I originally started reading Gerry Boyle during an all too long lull between Robert B. Parker Spenser books (and during Parker's "slump" of Double Deuce, Playmates, etc.). Expecting to find a major rip-off of Parker, I was very pleasantly surprised to find tightly written, well-plotted stories with plenty of dry humor. I found Potshot to be one of the best of the series.Boyle has a wonderful sense of style, particularly with characters that could easily veer off into stereotypes or just plain silliness. The legalized pot movement is just so ripe for satire, but even through the haze, each character is used to further the plot rather than just comic relief.Bottom line: read this book, and his others. You don't need to be a huge Parker fan to appreciate this book.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Best I've read in the series. By Tom Tracy Admittedly the only other book I've read in the McMorrow series was Borderline, and that was good enough to get me to try "Potshot". The basic premise at the beginning, Jack is hired to write an article reagarding the legalization of pot, is interesting enough to keep you reading and it just builds from there. The introduction of the hard to figure characters Bobby and Coyote, and the very surprising characters of Melanie and Steven helped make this a real page turner. I thought the story was fun to read and when it came down to the last 75 pages or so, I couldn't put it down. So much for the "noble" (depending on your viewpoint), idea of legalizing pot. A real surprise ending!

Rooney For whatever reason, I am just now getting to the Jack McMorrow mystery series (this is #4, and I'm reading in order). Gerry Boyle is the real deal for crime / mystery fans. Trying to get current, as Book #10, "Once Burned," is due out shortly.

Tolkien got the main symbols in The Hobbit from Richard Wagner's Ring cycle, but he was testy and sensitive whenever Wagner's name was mentioned. The problem was Wagner's anti-Semitism. The English had a long history of philo-Semitism that did not mesh with Wagner's views, leading to an artistic conflict that Tolkien could not resolve, and ultimately to an incoherent book. In purging Wagner's symbols of their anti-Semitism, Tolkien purged them of their meaning as well, for the real issue in Wagner's Das Rheingold is capitalism, not anti-Semitism. And if capitalism is the real issue, England must be the villain, which is unacceptable to Tolkien, an English patriot. Once rearranged to suit English sensibilities, though, those symbols lose their power, meaning, and coherence. After reading E. Michael Jones's intellectual tour de force, you'll never view Tolkien's saga the same.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. One of the Best Criticisms of Tolkien I Have Ever Read By Joe Keenan In twenty some pages E. Michael Jones explicates some of the "failures" almost every reader of Tolkien feels upon reading Tolkien. To me, there was always the feeling, "Yeah, there's something great about this work, but.....am I missing something?" Yes, it turns out I was missing something big time. Jone's contends that Tolkien sought to reset his beloved "Northern Thing" in England to rescue it from the tainted embrace of Wagner. Wagner mined the Northern Thing for his own Ring Trilogy, Wagner was later a darling of the Nazis, Wagner thus tainted the Northern Thing with Antisemitism. Tolkien sought to remove this taint of racism from the Northern Thing by resetting it in England and retelling the mythos. Simultaneously, he would be gifting his beloved England with its' own foundation myth.Jones argues that in resetting and retelling the Wagnerian mythos in England Tolkien stripped the story of its' deeper meaning. I would (and do) disagree, but the points he makes are cogent and thought provoking. Given the truncated nature of this "book" the insights are arguments contained within outshine (IMHO) volumes written by others. A truly groundbreaking work that led to me returning to reading Tolkien and developing a much deeper appreciation for all of Tolkien's work.

5 of 13 people found the following review helpful. nonsense By K. Mc. One wonders if the author read very much at all about Tolkien. This framing, in which, once again for this author, The Jews are central to the symbolic ergo narrative exegesis, manages to fabricate an analysis of something.... but it isn't Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales.

4 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Much as you'd expect from yet another 'voice of the oppressed' By Angeln Not sure it matters that the author seems to understand very little about Tolkien when you consider the predictable anti-English tone of his pronouncements elsewhere and the meaningless phrases attributed to him such as 'ethnic Catholics'. Language-abuse is common among Irish-wordshipping American authors and assigning all the ills of the world to 'WASPS' no less so. Serious students of Tolkien or Wagner [axe-grinders excepted] are warned they will find little to interest them here. Do not confuse understanding the Ring with talking through it.

"Blue seas all around. Waves lapping gently at the sides of the raft. We sit in silence amidst the debris of wrappers from the now empty survival pack. Occasionally one of us begins to cry as our minds remind us of all that we've lost. All that we may never see again. Blue skies tease us that it could be a pleasant day if the situation was different. But it's not different. It's not a pleasant day. We've lost our friends, our family, our way, our strength - and if we're not rescued soon, our lives." When a cruise-liner goes down, four strangers find themselves trapped on a life-raft with little chance of survival in this tense, psychological horror from Matt Shaw

Many writers use a lot of detail, exposition, character development, and background to bring their story to life. Where most readers enjoy novels of this type, I like to flit between such books. For every It, there is a twenty page novella that is one thousand pages shorter, but still packs a similar punch. This is the beauty of the written word. Occasionally, you will find a story that is, for want of a better word, ‘bare bones’. This type of story hooks you with likeable characters, a simple plot everyone can understand and a premise that is universally terrifying. If you appeal to the masses, they will all understand. This is your job done, all you need to do is sprinkle it with a decent story…The Big Blue is one such book. Marooned on a life raft, after a particularly nasty cruise liner sinking, four survivors must come to terms with their fatal predicament. Stranded in the ocean, with minimal food and drink and only each other for company, it’s only a matter of time until tempers fray, emotions get the better of them and some nasty home truths are laid bare. Then, the amnesia wears off…Horror can throw monsters at you, werewolves, serial killers and the apocalypse. Yes, all terrifying prospects, but all tinged with fantasy. Unless someone nukes Earth, I doubt Jason is going to knock on your door, introduce you to his werewolf pet and then invite Godzilla round for tea. The Big Blue takes two fears, two primitive, visceral fears shared by humanity as a whole and twists them, tweaks them, and eventually shoves them in your face. Taking place on the life raft – with flashbacks provided to develop our strangers – the story is a slow burner. We know they aren’t going anywhere and with every page turned, their plight becomes more and more desperate. The detail is scarce, yes, but this works wonders. After all, on a life raft, you’re not worried about the details. It’s a battle between you and nature, and we suspect who’s going to win that one. Shaw wisely focuses on the characters and their interaction, which are staggering in their accuracy. The characters are few. Considering this, they have a lot to do. They carry the story, provide insight and the plot through their very eyes. As their supplies, and hope, run out, it’s only a matter of time until something bad happens. The usual nuances are there – one particular Titanic reference brings a brief moment of humour – and the story is very easy to read. However, this story is about the fear. We all fear drowning, we all fear being helpless. The premise of this book could actually happen. Every human on the planet, in theory, could connect with this story. Being stranded at sea is no one’s idea of a holiday, let alone a potential way to die slowly. As the story rumbles to its conclusion, your heart will be in your mouth, wondering how or if our characters will survive. It’s this basic underlying tone that makes The Big Blue what is it, a very satisfying psychological horror. Proof, once more, that Matt has brains as well as splatter when it comes to his work.Five stars? Of course. The Big Blue is a simple story, with complex characters and that ever underlying fear. It’s psychological horror 101. Unlike Titanic though, we don’t know how it’s going to end and we have no idea where the characters will take us. Drawing us in with a wonderfully eerie cover and effortless prose from Shaw, this is another fine addition to the author’s collection. One word of warning, if you prefer Jaws to Open Water, gore to brains, you might come away a little disappointed. However, if you can turn off your blood-lust and enjoy the tension instead, you’re in for a treat.

Although it is kind of short, coming in at just over 100 pages, it is a solid story that does a great job of turning the beautiful ocean into a dark, scary place. Four survivors of a cruise ship accident are floating around in the middle of the ocean, awaiting rescue. Is anyone looking for them? Where are the other survivors? This book is very reminiscent of the old Twilight Zone episodes and has a twist ending you won't see coming. The Big Blue, although nowhere near as extreme as many of his other novels, is quite enjoyable and is one you don't want to miss.

By Annabele Four strangers find themselves trapped on a life raft after a horrible storm, strong enough to rip the Cruise Liner they were on apart. With none of the other life rafts in sight they find themselves wondering if they will ever be rescued. * Beth who was on Holiday with her family hopes they are safe on another raft, * Fiona who was working her first major job in one of the many the floating restaurants on board, * The man who can't remember who he is or how he got there after receiving a blow to the head when the Cruise Liner sank, * And finally, Alex the very hostile, angry man man who carried him on board the raft.Watching the aftermath of the sinking Cruise Liner, as each character reflects on their life prior to, and after finding themselves on the life raft, their supplies are limited to a survival pack placed on each life raft, they can only wait and hope for rescue, yet for some reason they are alone, separated from the other survivor's rafts. Will they be found before it's too late? A gripping tale that keeps you reading till the end. You won't want to put it down until the very last page.Characters are well developed, no noticeable typos or errors in sentence structure, the storyline was well thought out. Highly Recommended.

Strangely, since reading this, I've become more aware of the rich history of ghost sightings. The day I finished Help for the Haunted, I was reading an article in the Smithsonian magazine about Colorado, which included Isabella Bird's experience with the ghost of Rocky Mountain Jim Nugent. A story on NPR mentioned someone's fascination with seances. I can't seem to shake this new fascination. Each of the episodes in Help for the Haunted is a perfect gem, but after reading them all, you realize how much you've learned about Vera Van Slyke and Lida Prasilova, two beer imbibing, independent, clever women. Can't wait to read more!

I don’t usually like ghost stories By Mellow Full disclosure: The author of “Help for the Haunted” is married to my daughter.Fuller disclosure: I don’t usually like ghost stories. I bought the book mainly to be a thoughtful mother-in-law.Fullest disclosure: I thoroughly enjoyed “Help for the Haunted”, and would heartily recommend it. The author sets these stories in period of history to which he has devoted his doctoral and professorial passion; therefore, the historical references to people, places, and events are authentic. I found myself fact-checking on my computer to see which people were real and which were inventions. The stories themselves are well told, imaginatively clever and inventive, skillfully blending humor, mystery, and suspense.Perhaps one of my favorite things about of the book is the progression of the friendship between Vera and Lida, as their own personal histories gradually unfold to one another.Besides that, reading the book was just plain fun. I heartily recommend it.

Good Female Characters, Fun Occult Detection By Nina Zumel When I realized who the ghost was in the first story of Tim Prasil's new collection Help for the Haunted, I knew I was in for a good time. The rest of the volume didn't disappoint. Help for the Haunted is a fun collection of linked short stories, based around a creative theory as to why ghosts are able to return to the plane of the living, and a cute way of detecting these crossovers. Within that framework fall all manner of ghosts and manifestations; every story offers a different kind. The tales are tightly enough coupled and have enough progression that I'm tempted to categorize the book as a "short story cycle" style novel. The narrator is the author's great-grandaunt Lida Prasilova, writing about her adventures with early twentieth century muckraker journalist and occult detective Vera Van Slyke.I love the rapport between Vera and Lida. They're like a beer-drinking, ghost-hunting, female Holmes and Watson. Like Holmes, Vera's mind is dedicated wholly to the information she needs for her job. She's not much for literature (classical or popular), and she's hilariously bad with names. She doesn't have much to do with the opposite sex, mostly I think because they can't handle her. Lida was a fraudulent medium, whom Vera unmasked. She agrees to help Vera with her exposé of the Spiritualism industry, Spirits Shouldn't Sneeze (what a great title), and eventually becomes Vera's assistant -- and dearest friend. There are also some delightful details hidden throughout for fans of the occult detective genre. Vera's mentor is one Harry Escott, a character featured in two stories by Fitz-James O'Brien, one of which, "A Pot of Tulips," was for a time considered the earliest tale in the occult detective genre (The author's chronology, on his website, gives that honor to E.T.A Hoffman's "Das öde Haus" -- at least for the time being). I also caught a name-check to a character in the 1970s occult detective TV series Kolchak, which I believe is the author's favorite show. So there may be other Kolchak references, too, that I missed.Although these are ghost stories, they aren't especially scary -- these are more detective stories that happen to be about the supernatural. Which is just fine with me.If you like occult detective stories, definitely check these out.Recommended.

There were rumors of a long-lost treasure which I like. Riddles kept the mind engaged, and it was educational and entertaining. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies (National Treasure) and books (Pirates of Financial Freedom), so I was excited to keep reading. The second half wasn't as good as the first half unfortunately. There was plenty of action which was good, but it sometimes seemed forced. There were plenty of twists and turns, but they were a little too unbelievable. While the ending was a surprise, other parts were kind of predictable. The characters were interesting. The writing style was strong. The book overall was entertaining. However, I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites.

39 of 47 people found the following review helpful. Too Many Unlikely Elements By Ferguson There are several authors who write adventure novels based on ancient historical events, including Jack Du Brul, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler. All of these works require a certain amount of tolerance on the part of the reader when it comes to overlooking doubtful plot elements. The above authors make that easy for their readers by limiting and providing some basis for difficult-to-believe items. The problem with "The Lost Island" is that there is something that assaults the reader's common sense on nearly every page, from major plot elements to the physical abilities of the protagonists. Preston & Child simply impose too much on the readers willingness to waive incredulity in order to enjoy the story, and the result seems amateurish. The basic plot was well thought out and interesting, and it could have been developed without piling unlikely events on top of each other until the whole thing started to collapse. That is not to say that the book was not entertaining, just that it was way too lightweight. It is certainly not up to the terrific Pendergast series, which manages to make the less believable elements easy to ignore. This is the first Gideon Crew novel I have read, and it will be the last, at lease until I find one for significantly less than the current price.

37 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Third time is the charm! By Susan Tunis it seems to have taken Mssrs. Preston and Child a few attempts to find their footing with their character Gideon Crew, but at last they have. This third novel is far and away the strongest of the series. Our beloved authors have crafted one of those "Where do they come up with these ideas!" plots, so I want to be very circumspect in what I reveal. In The Lost Island, Gideon again finds himself in the employ of Eli Glinn. He is tasked with a daring art heist as the first step in a search for a substance with significant medical implications. And that's all I'm telling you, because...It's not really all that surprising that there are over-the-top elements to the novel's plot. I mean, we've seen that from these two before. But the underlying premise this time around was so novel and just so much fun that I wouldn't want to spoil it with hints. I will say this: Many novels drag a bit in the middle. In this case, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I was just so darn amused by the proceedings. The novel's opening was also strong, leaping immediately into the action of the tale. Preston and Child are brilliant when it comes to plotting, and their talents are fully on display here.If I have one complaint--and I do--it's that the motivations and actions of some of the characters truly stretched my credulity as the novel's denouement drew close. Okay, and one more... At one point a character proclaims, "It's so obvious." And, d'uh, it REALLY is.But... The novel's epilogue is truly AWESOME, and will leave long-time fans SALIVATING for the next (Final?) book in the Gideon Crew series. Count me among their number! I begin plotting now on my evil plan to obtain an early draft of the manuscript. BWAHAHAHA!

Murder 42 was the title of the homemade video that shocked Scottsdale detectives and special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The killer on the video never reveals his face, and with few leads, the FBI doesn't believe they will ever find him. The video falls into the lap of Special Agent Gio Adami, now an Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the prestigious Behavioral Science Unit, and he turns to the one person he knows can help him: Sarah King. The video shocks Sarah to her core and leads her on a bloody quest to find the monster who made it, and to the one place she doesn't want to go: into her own mind. With Murder 42, bestselling author Victor Methos creates a breathtaking thriller taking you from the art galleries of Los Angeles, to the seedy pornography dens of Arizona. Revealing aspects of our society most people know nothing about, he illuminates that place from which all evil stems: the human heart.

Murder 42 is another Methos thriller and it leaves you terrified that such evil in man exists and we are all its subjects. The reason I hated the book is because he killed off the good guys, at least the ones you are cheering for darn it. But it does make a good read anyway!

The story is about an Amish woman who was outcast because she is psychic. She works with the FBI to solve serial killings. There is a nice hook at the end of the book that gives a hint about the next book.

Sometimes not all attention is good. After recovering from her life threatening stint as Eleanor Channing’s assistant, Trudie Eyre decided to step back from Hollywood celebrities and work with acclaimed author and scriptwriter Adele Wesson. Unlike most of her clients, Adele is a joy to work with. She would be in heaven if it wasn’t for Adele’s husband Eric. Eric Wesson has not met a women who doesn’t fall for him and he does not like that Trudie is more interested in his wife’s latest bestseller than she is in him. When Eric ends up dead it is up to Trudie to organize his funeral. This means hunting through Eric’s past looking for family, or at least someone who will mourn the passing of a man most people thought of as an amoral gold digger. During her search Trudie finds that Eric Wesson was both more of a good man than she expected and also a worse man than she thought.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A RETREAD BUT STILL WORTH IT By DOA Oddly enough I didn't enjoy this one as much as the free one. She hit it out of the ballpark with the first book, but in the second one she retreads the same ground too closely. And the characters in Trudie's corner, that I liked meeting so much in the first book, are given short shrift. On the other hand I wanted more of the new characters, Tomas the funeral organizer, and Griffin's dad. Leonie Gant has a deft hand at creating likeable characters, a fairly rare skill these days.Another problem was that there was zilch doubt in my mind who the killer was from the moment the person appeared on the scene. There was nothing to change my mind as the story continued, and eventually it all panned out exactly as I'd thought. Of course it's the characters that keep you turning the pages but the mystery, and figuring out whodunnit, should require a few more brain cells than this one does.Still, I can't really mark her down, even including she still has a problem with commas and a few typos, because she is just so enjoyable to read. Plus I love the main character's not nasty, not narcissistic, but self respectful attitude toward the sometimes jerky men in her life. She stands up for herself and doesn't let herself be used, without getting ugly about it. That is a rare quality in fiction--in real life!--and I really value it. I can recommend her books with a clear conscience because of it.And I will be reading the next book. I think she'll move on to new ground and I can't wait to see what she comes up with.

The writing is excellent and keeps me glued to the story. Trudie works for a company that handles hard-to-work-for clients in Hollywood and she sure has to put up with some spoiled self-centered personalities as we can all imagine. It takes a certain type of person to be able to handle this kind of job and Trudie does it very well with a lot of patience and caring. I like that she stands up for herself and doesn't let people (especially the men) run roughshod over her. Her jobs do get her into some pretty dangerous situations which makes for really good suspense. I like the other characters involved in her life also: Det. Jake Griffin who cares very much for her but his job comes first, Chrystal, Edwin, Monique, Sean, but I really liked Travis Cooper P.I. that gets involved helping solve the murder mystery in this one. He's really a likable character despite his antics, and his history with Jake and I'd love it if he had his own series. Bet there could be some interesting stories. Involving Det. Ramos perhaps? There are of course a lot of sordid Hollywood shenanigans but nothing is really descriptive and no foul language which made me like this series even more. Please keep them coming Leonie!Helena

Well written, well edited (a few mistakes) and held my attention immediately. I purchased the second book as soon as I finished the first and was pleased again. Favorite characters returned as part of her life and a few new interesting characters introduced. I really like these people, the way the story unfolds and their believable characteristics. I am about to download the next book!

Wilcoxen I'm serious when I say that CK Vile (whoever he or she is) may be the best writer of any genre I've come across in my lifetime...and I've read a lot of books! Clever, in depth characters, fast-moving storylines, and incredibly well developed plots make reading these books an indescribable pleasure. I hope there are many more to come! Thank you for sharing such great talent.

Not Quite as Good as the Last, But Still a Good Read By M.Mak I didn't like Cast as much as I did the first book, and definitely not as much as the second one. Though we did get a lot more of Corpse who quickly became one of my favorite characters in the last book. I was very happy about that! She doesn't disappoint here either. The only criticism I have is that she seems a little too good at everything. But there are those amazing people out there, so it's still believable and it's not too over the top usually. What didn't seem up to par in this book were the maggots, or villains, if you're picking this one up first. We saw some real warped thinking in the first books and the people in this one can't hold a candle to the level of psychosis and twisted acts that took place during the first two books. It seems more like bullying than anything else in this one. They just feel more like two-bit thugs than someone who wants to feed him to a barrel of rodents or set him on fire. There were things that happened (like one talking to a demon) which really could have been developed into something way out there and crazy, but instead only got a brief mention. That's the sort of thing I'm referring to. It gets tense in moments but the build up and the crazy just isn't there. I can't in good conscience call this a thriller of any kind.We do see a lot more of Nick's mother which is awkward and hopeful and sad all rolled together. It makes for petty conversation at times but it also gives us a lot more insight into where Nick is now with her.I would still recommend reading it. It felt really short (not sure if that's the case or not due to Amazon's page numbers frequently being way off) and I easily read it in one sitting. If nothing else you'll gain more insight into Nick, his mother and Corpse. You'll also appreciate the background knowledge if you pick up the next book, Con, which I thought was much better.I will keep coming back to this series and this author. While I don't feel that it's true thriller material, it is a very interesting storyline with characters you want to keep getting to know more about. The writing is well done, the grammar is on point, I didn't spot a single error, and I feel this is definitely an author to watch.

This one didn't unsettle me as much, but the vivid imagery and graphic descriptions still made me shudder deliciously. Five stars is not enough.

She vows that will change as soon as she has the baby that she loves so desperatley. For she has made a promise that her baby will have the life that she never did. Then one night she finds herself out on the street when the father of her baby takes off with all her money. It was that night that destroyed her dreams and she has vowed revenge. With the help of Ben English, she begins to heal and lets Ben find his way to her heart.Bennett English is drawn to China from the first moment that he saw her. There is something beatiful and rare that he sees when he looks at her. He finds himself falling in love before she even wakes from her coma and when she wakes and looks into his eyes, he knows he is lost. The only thing standing in the way of their happiness is a killer.Butterfly is an enjoyable book that is more romance than suspense. The killers identity was a surprise to me, but I enjoyed this book and will look for other books by this author.

It should be labeled simply 'Romance'. I am an avid romance reader, but I was bored with the romance in this one. The character of Ben English got on my nerves because he was a little too perfect and seemed obsessed with the female lead China. I never did understand how he fell in love with her just by seeing her one time on the streets and barely that when she was shot. It moved too fast and he became too much with the 'honey' endearments and 'sweet' words when he didn't even know her. Throughout the story I was never fully convinced he loved her and wasn't sure when it happened, or if it ever did. China was a bit unsecure for my taste and trusted him too fast without knowing him. Considering some wacko was after her and she was being used by everyone in her life, a few sweet words and she was 'in love'. I just wasn't convinced.~China is pregnant and alone. She is left homeless and walking the streets after her loser boyfriend takes off with all her money. She finds herself the victim of a woman's bullet when the woman kills a photographer trying to take a picture of her on the streets. China Brown is the only witness to the senseless killing and when the woman turns the gun on her she is sure she is dead. Waking up later in the hospital, she finds her baby dead and a very attentive detective at her side. How can she live without her baby?Ben English has to track the merciless killer who thought nothing of murdering a man and then a helpless pregnant woman. He finds a bond with her that he can't explain and wants her to trust him. Things get touchy when at first they are looking for a man and find out its a woman with long blonde hair that they should be looking for and someone who may have a grudge against a tabloid photographer. That could be hundreds of people! He must protect the case's only witness, a shattered woman who doesn't want to live. Is the killer the person they least suspect? Is China in immediate danger? Are they tracking the wrong person?Tracy Talley~@
