The only book you'll ever need By Amazon User I have to say, I'm a sucker for "lifestyle" books like Kinfolk that have pretty pictures of completely unobtainable life scenarios, but because of how inaccessible the "lifestyle" they're showing tends to be, they usually end up collecting dust on my coffee table. THIS BOOK is so different. Not only are the photos, crafts and ideas beautifully shot (and equally as deserving of a front-and-center coffee table spot), but the author is one of the most honest, articulate and REAL people I've ever encountered in this kind of book. Rather than presenting recipes or crafts that would require a culinary degree or access to obscure ingredients someone like me would never know how to obtain, she lays out easy to follow recipes with helpful hints about where to locate each ingredient or item. It's like your best friend is telling you how to make a delicious lemon doughnut or make a DIY candle (that actually looks cute and not DIY). In addition to all of the amazing recipes she's so well known for, Adrianna also acts as a totally down-to-earth life coach (again, in such a real, humble, human way), presenting the kinds of advice or ideas that actually make you think "I can totally do this!"I bought several of these books to give out as gifts for the holidays this year, and I'll probably end up buying even more. Save your money on Kinfolk and buy this book --- on that will probably end up full of greasy finger marks and paint stains because you'll actually use it!Another win for A Cozy Kitchen!

Adrianna is such an amazing blogger, and that absolutely translates to her book as well. The layout is organized by seasons, and has a year's worth of recipes, activities, and DIY projects. The photography is beautiful, and the book makes for a very nice addition to a coffee table. Thanks!

I love how good the food looks, whoever styled it and shot it did a really good job, and I love that the crafts are do-able for just about anybody. I actually liked it so much that I bought two more as christmas presents. Definitely staying on my coffee table for a very long time.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Little Girl Lost comes a compelling new series …

Inspector Devlin is called to investigate a case of arson: a burning barn and, inside, the charred remains of a local drug dealer.

Suspicions quickly fall on a local vigilante group that calls itself "the Rising."

But Devlin stumbles onto a more pressing case when his old partner's teenage son goes missing. With quiet determination, he attempts to make sense of the boy's disappearance …

That is, until another drug dealer is killed and Devlin realizes that the case goes far deeper and darker than he ever imagined.

Gripping, heartbreaking, and always surprising, The Rising is a tour de force from one of Ireland's greatest crime writers.

The Rising: An Inspector Devlin Thriller (Inspector Devlin Thrillers Book 4), by Brian McGilloway

From Publishers Weekly In McGilloway's intriguing fourth mystery featuring Garda Insp. Benedict Devlin (after 2010's Bleed a River Deep), Devlin investigates a series of murders, each more devastating than the last. When the remains of a drug dealer are found in a burnt-down barn, evidence indicates the barn was set ablaze by the Rising, a local antidrug vigilante group. At the same time, Devlin faces a case that strikes closer to home: the body of a former colleague's son has washed up on a beach, and a posthumous text message from the son's phone hints that he and his two friends' innocent camping trip might not have been so innocent. The bleak borderlands between Ireland and Northern Ireland are the perfect setting for such shady characters, whose nebulous motivations are both plausible and surprising. Despite the dreary setting, the thrills are anything but dull. McGilloway builds a realistic world in which each of Devlin's actions is fraught with personal and moral peril. (Nov.)

Definitely kept my attention throughout By I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*I have never read this author before so I was excited, albeit nervous, to read this story. I love a good suspense/mystery/crime thriller. What constitutes a good one for me are the following: I didn't guess who the bad guy was; there was a ton of action; not too heavy on romance; the characters are likable; and the story is somewhat plausible. I got pretty much all of these things in this book.Inspector Devlin is a seemingly complicated man. He wants to work and do his job, but he also wants to be at home with his kids. He's having issues with his family because they don't understand him and his need to do his job. He is also struggling with the fact that he tends to like to be at work more than he likes to be at home with his wife. So, he's dealing with all of that and the fact that his boss is a giant jerkwad. Plus, let's throw in several murders and a missing teenager as well. The story takes place in Ireland, a land that I would love to visit someday, and it was hard to read the dialogue (in my head) without an Irish accent. :) I enjoyed the story and thought that there was quite a bit of action and I definitely did not see the ending coming. The outcome of the case is truly believable as I'm sure it happens every day here in this country as well as others that have drug & gang problems. I will most likely read more of Brian McGilloway's books and look forward to reading more of Inspector Devlin's adventures in Ireland. The only thing that I didn't care for was the relationship that Inspector Devlin had with is former partner. I don't think that every detective/mystery/police/suspense book has to have two partners of the opposite sex who "get close" to each other during their time working together. I'm sure it happens in real life sometimes, but I think this story could have done without that part. I give this 4.5.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another devilish case for Devlin... By Raven Ostensibly the plot revolves around a community action group `The Rising' who are seeking to eradicate the stranglehold on their neighbourhood of local drug dealers. However, this group is led by a small band of men who have less than savoury pasts and who are actually seeking to strengthen the grip of one major drug dealer, the outwardly respectable businessman Vincent Morrison, by disposing of the competition. Morrison is a nemesis to our moral yet maverick detective Devlin, who soon gets to the root of this conspiracy but also finds himself embroiled on a personal level with Morrison due to the growing relationship between Morrison's son John and Devlin's daughter Penny. Penny is approaching the devilish teenage years apace and all the seeds of rebellion are wonderfully sown as Devlin comes into conflict with his daughter over this youthful dalliance ultimately leading to a gripping emotional drama at the conclusion of the book putting Devlin's familial relationships at the very heart of this novel. This book also sees the reappearance of Devlin's former colleague Caroline Williams who has always had a special place in Devlin's heart in the previous will they, won't they plot lines. There is heartbreak for Caroline with the senseless death of her teenage son Peter and through the actions of Caroline's ex-husband we see her pushed to her emotional limits and Devlin has no other option but to become more involved. This story line is particularly well realised and really tugs on the reader's heartstrings as Caroline is such an empathetic character and depicts the loyalty that Devlin has to those closest to him outside of his police role.Brian McGilloway's books are always a wonderful combination of fictional drama blended with an adherence to factual history but I felt this book in particular marked a slight departure in style from the author. Indeed, what struck me most about the book was how emotionally fraught it was in comparison to the rest of the series and how, through the interlinking plot lines, the theme of family was so prevalent, amongst the `good' and the `bad' characters which made this book resonate with the reader on a much deeper level. A great read.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. power and drugs By elizabeth bennet The continued yarn of Det. inspector Devlin and his crew in Lifford, Ireland. Realistic police story about the destruction of lives and illegal drug use.The locale is a small area however the problems far reaching and devastating with the lure of money, power and greed. The cooperation and friendship between Devlin and his contemporary, Hendry, in the Northern Ireland police dept., is a great addition to the story. The distrust of the locale residents to the police on both sides of the border is realistic and disheartening.A good story, recommend it highly.

I work in a high school and after spending some time with "Thinking on the Page," I am forced to reflect on how many formulaic essay's I wrote when I was University. The book begins with the premise that everyone can write well with the proper tools and then follows up by providing those tools to the reader. This is a great resource for teachers looking to support and challenge their students. It is also a great resource for senior high school and university/college level students looking to get an edge in how they organize their thoughts on the page.

For readers of Preston & Child, James Rollins, and Brad Thor comes a gripping new thriller from Joshua Corin, in which an audacious hijacking is just the beginning of a twisted international nightmare.  Flight 816 has been hijacked and the terrorists have decided to auction off the passengers online. The passengers who receive the highest bids will be released. The passengers who receive the lowest bids will be executed.   Life can’t be better for veteran pilot Larry Walder. He has a great job, a terrific kid, a gorgeous wife—and no inkling that tonight will be the end of the world as he knows it. In the early hours before the Fourth of July, three men break into Larry’s home. And as the day lurches on to its terrifying course, a life is taken, and Flight 816 from Atlanta to Cozumel, Mexico, vanishes off the radar.   In the air, Larry must find a way to save his family, his crew, and his passengers. On the ground, disgraced FBI agent Xanadu Marx goes rogue, making it her mission to track down the missing flight before the hijackers reach their diabolical endgame. With the casualties racking up and the world’s busiest airport under lockdown, a message arrives: This is no ordinary hijacking, no typical hostage crisis. This ransom is a totally different beast—the first hint of a conspiracy that might bring America to its knees.Advance praise for Cost of Life  “Joshua Corin is a master storyteller. If events move as they should he will awaken normally and ready himself to fly a plane filled with vacationers to Cozumel, Mexico. But events do not move as planned. He and his wife and child are rudely awakened when three men break into their house, take his family hostage, and tell Larry that he will fly the plane as planned, but to an airfield of their choosing. Mr Corin takes his readers on a giddy ride into terror with a plot that could occur in today's world of extremist attacks with no aversion to murder. Captain Walder is forced into a car and driven to the airport to take command of his flight. On the way a police officer stopping the car for a minor infraction is shot to death by the terrorists. And that is just the first of many killings at the hands of the people kidnapping him and telling him that if he doesn't do as told his wife and child will be murdered. Why the take over and rerouting of the plane is the centerpiece of Corin's engrossing novel. The terrorists have planned their actions with great care, and look like they have thought of every possible counter action that could thwart their interests. To call the book "an all nighter" does not do it justice. The reader will be caught up in details that are carefully plotted by Joshua Corin and will find it almost impossible to put the book down before finishing it. Well done and certainly presenting the author as a master of plot and character and one to follow in the future.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. had me hooked at the start By She Treads Softly Cost of Life by Joshua Corin is very highly recommended. This is a stuck-overnight-at-the-airport thriller that should hold your rapt attention from the start.Pilot Larry Walder is woken up and informed that his wife and son are now hostages - and only he can keep them alive by following the kidnapper's instructions. Larry is scheduled to fly from Atlanta to Cozumel, Mexico, that day. Instead, once he takes off in Atlanta he is to fly the plane and all passengers to the location of the coordinates provided by the group of men. One of the men accompanies Larry to the airport just to make sure he follows their instructions.Once Xanadu Marx, a former FBI agent recently released from rehab to a halfway house, hears some interesting information on a police scanner, she talks a fellow housemate into giving her a ride to the local FBI field office. She is sure that she will be needed on this case by SAC Jim Christie, Special-Agent-in-Charge at the Atlanta field office. What she learns is that she is now considered a civilian, but because of her special ability with a wide variety of languages she is being sent over to be an interpreter for a suspect in custody at the airport. A young intern is giving her a ride and will stay in touch with the field office. This is no ordinary hijacked airplane story where the bad guys set a ransom in order to release the imprisoned passengers. Corin has set his high adrenaline-packed thriller decidedly in today's device laden society where everyone is connected all the time. At almost the half-way point this story took a twist and a turn that set my world of expectations in a tailspin, but made so much sense in today's culture. Devious, demented, shrewd, and calculating - but so 21st century. And that is all I'll say. I don't want to spoil anything about this compelling thriller.Corin is a good writer... or let me sheepishly admit that he must be a very good writer because I was not paying a lick of attention to his word usage or adept descriptive skills. It's all about the action here, baby, and he had me hooked at the start. Once you start your story with a family taken hostage and an ultimatum to keep them alive that could mean the death of others, you can pretty much bet on a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is told through alternating viewpoints, basically between those on the hijacked plane and the people trying to find the aircraft, although the main characters are basically Larry and Xena with several supporting characters. I know the character of Xana will likely grate on some people, but I liked her tough resourcefulness as she pieces clues together while fighting her demons. Hopefully Corin will bring Xena back for another thriller sometime in the future.Disclosure: I received an advanced reading copy of this book from the publisher and TLC for review purposes.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Terrific and unique thriller By Jennifer Mclean "Cost Of Life" was a total thrill ride, what a great book. I've never read a book by Mr. Corin until now but I'm adding him to my goto authors because this thriller/mystery was wonderfully unique but also easily enjoyable and interesting to read."Cost of Life" starts with the kidnapping of a pilot's wife and young son. The kidnappers want Larry Walder complacent, they want him to board his plane and fly hundreds of passengers to an unknown location. Larry doesn't want to participate in a hijacking but he desperately wants to save his family. After doing what the kidnappers ask, it becomes clear that Larry's job is just starting. Now he has to find a way to rescue his family, his crew and all the passengers he betrayed by following orders. He is not alone in the task though. The world is watching for the outcome of this hijacking and disgraced former FBI special agent Xana Marx is brought in because of her unique skills. Xana is a recently recovered alcoholic and she needs the support of the people around her to stay sober while she tries to solve this hostage crisis.Xana, the FBI, police and airport security will all work together to bring back flight eight sixteen. The problem is, this is no ordinary hostage negotiation. The kidnappers have a very unusual plan and it becomes clear that a good outcome may be impossible even using Xana's superior skills and intelligence.Character development of Xena Marx goes above and beyond excellent. The reader really gets a sense of who this woman is as she tries valiantly to both stay sober and solve a nearly unsolvable crime. The Characters that are added around her help show her many and complex sides. The story is told from both Xana's and pilot Larry Walder's point of view. The complex problems and fears that are created with a hijacking and hostage negotiation are made so clear that the reader feels both the panic and frustration the passengers feel as the hijacking continues long into the day. This was a terrific book not only because the writing is tight and the emotions are true but also because the situation surrounding the mystery is so unique. Initially, I thought a hijacking could only go a few ways but the author has created such an unusual and unexpected twist that as the reader you find yourself trying to discover the next move. What would help the good guys win the day?I didn't see the end coming and for me, that's a very, very good thing. This is a five star thriller/mystery. I highly recommend trying it and since it debuts on March 17, 2015 you only have a few days to await it's release! You'll love the characters and root for the good guys even as you can't figure out how they could possibly win in this very complex hijacking. Go preorder it, you won't regret it, guaranteed.

Great mystery series By Texas Maid If you are looking for a good, wholesome, mystery novel with good suspense until the very end this series of books by Lynette Sowell will delight you. The thing I enjoyed so much is reading a book with NO vulgar words in it and with the heroine often quoting Scripture. How refreshing. Yet, the mystery and suspense are still there and the characters are very real. You get really involved in their lives and want to know more and more about them.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Great book By Paulette Collins It was refreshing to read a book that had no cuss words or crude language. I would highly recommend this series. Was interesting and held attention.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed it By txrev This is not the type of book I usually read so I was not really expecting to enjoy it. The author does a good job, however, and I enjoyed the read. It's not a deep book but it was a good entertaining read.

From former federal sex-crimes prosecutor Allison Leotta comes the first book in the Anna Curtis series—a “riveting debut legal thriller…[with] a vulnerable, tenacious heroine, surprising twists and turns, and equal parts romance and danger” (Library Journal, starred review). As a newly minted Assistant US Attorney in Washington, DC, Anna Curtis has already developed a thick skin to help her deal with the unsettling brutality she encounters daily in her overflowing stack of domestic violence cases. Yet when Laprea Johnson—battered to death by her boyfriend on the morning after Valentine’s Day—crosses Anna’s desk, there’s something about this particular case that Anna can’t quite shake, something that reminds the prosecutor of her own troubled past. It’s also the biggest case of Anna’s career—and the most personal. If she wins it, she could lose everything. The victim she tried to protect is dead. Her lover—no, her ex-lover—is defending the accused killer. Caught between seeking justice for Laprea and saving her personal life, Anna makes a series of choices that jeopardize her career, her relationships, and her very life as she uncovers the shocking truth behind the murder. Weaving expert knowledge with deft storytelling, Law of Attraction provides a fascinating glimpse into the most emotional cases of DC’s criminal justice system.

Law of Attraction: A Novel (Anna Curtis Series), by Allison Leotta

From Publishers Weekly In Leotta's solid suspense debut, Anna Curtis, an earnest but decidedly green Washington, D.C., assistant U.S. attorney, learns some unforgettable lessons about domestic abuse. The rookie prosecutor is dismayed when a client, Laprea Johnson, the battered girlfriend of ex-con D'marco Davis, who's charged with assaulting Laprea, recants her testimony in court, allowing D'marco, the father of Laprea's four-year-old twins, to go free. D'marco happens to be represented by Nick Wagner, a former Harvard Law classmate of Anna's who soon starts pursuing Anna romantically. When months later Laprea's lifeless, pregnant body turns up in the garbage dump behind D'marco's building, D'marco is charged with her murder. D.C. homicide chief Jack Bailey and Anna become friends as they prepare the case against D'marco, while Nick, who's lost Anna's affections, tries to win her back. Leotta, herself a D.C. sex crimes prosecutor, makes some smart observations about the conflicts legal eagles face in the pursuit of justice. Review "With this riveting debut legal thriller, Leotta, a federal sex crimes prosecutor in Washington, DC, joins the big leagues with pros like Lisa Scottoline and Linda Fairstein. 33 of 36 people found the following review helpful. "Something happened to little girls that grew up watching their mothers being hit... It was a peculiar law of attraction." By Susan Tunis Until reading Allison Leotta's novel, Law of Attraction, I'd forgotten just how much I enjoy legal thrillers. This debut is a pleasure from start to finish. The central character is Anna Curtis, a freshly-minted Assistant U. S. Attorney. Anna prosecutes misdemeanor domestic violence cases, and as the novel opens we witness the Laprea Johnson case from the first intake. Anna's opposing counsel for the trial is an old law school pal, Nick Wagner. Despite a strong attraction, Anna knows that she can't get involved with a public defender--and certainly not one she's up against! But after the unsatisfactory conclusion of the Johnson case, Anna and Nick's relationship changes. And it changes once more when they find themselves on opposing sides of the Johnson case for a second time. While it is no doubt annoying for a novelist to be compared to her fictional creation, it is clear that Allison and Anna share more than a hair color. Allison Leotta also graduated Harvard Law and became an AUSA in Washington, DC. Her intimate familiarity with Anna's world really shows. She is unquestionably strongest when writing from Anna's POV, and somewhat weaker when channeling her inner city characters. At one point one of them claims, "All due respect, Ms. Curtis, but you don't know my life." `Nuff said. Still, Leotta manages to create some interesting and layered characters. For a novice novelist, she does an excellent job with exposition, and really explains the ins and outs of what prosecutors are up against. The prose and dialogue are strong as well. It's not that the writing is particularly beautiful, but it isn't clunky either. It's just easy reading without being dumb. The pages fly by and there's a welcome vein of humor throughout the book to relieve the dark subject matter. With any mystery or thriller, it's really the plot that makes or breaks the story. I basically figured the whole thing out about halfway through the novel. (I'm clever like that.) When, 50 pages later, the protagonist was thinking along the same lines as me, I realized that perhaps the novelist was more clever than I had given her credit for and had tossed a few red herrings into the mix. In the end, I did get some of it right, but there were a heck of a lot of surprises along the way. This is a fast-paced book, and if somehow the mystery doesn't keep you completely riveted, there's a good chance the romantic aspect will. Things get a bit steamy. While Law of Attraction isn't going to win any literary awards, it was a terrifically entertaining debut and was more than enough to satisfy me. This is an author to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Romance or Mystery? By D. H. Williams "The courthouse coffee was terrible, but the morning after Valentine's Day was not time for a domestic violence prosecutor to go uncaffeinated." This opening brings you right into the proceedings and delivers a compelling premise: Asst. U.S. Attorney Anna Curtis, domestic violence prosecutor, gets blindsided by her client, Laprea Johnson, who lies on the witness stand to free her boyfriend. Soon after Laprea is found dead and Anna's own boyfriend, public defender Nick Wagner, is representing the accused. The subject of domestic violence is hard to deal with (and sometimes hard to read) on two levels - the violence itself (the descriptions are vivid) - and the worst kind of betrayal, danger at the hands of one you trust the most. Robert McKee - the Story Structure Guru - defines one of the most deeply affecting villainies as "evil disguised as good". Anna is a smart, but somewhat naïve, new lawyer learning her way. She has to figure out whom to love, who to trust and how to balance work, the tedium of the "papering" process, politics and a real desire to help her clients, who frequently resist her efforts. Leotta paints a detailed and warm portrait of the camaraderie and supportiveness of the women in the department and the challenge of finding someone who understands your world but won't take advantage of that knowledge. Sometimes the book also seems to be having trouble balancing out romance and the mystery. But one is left curious to know where Anna will go from here and with whom.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. excellent debut By Nicole I did not see this ending coming. Allison Leotta's debut is not only entertaining, it also keeps you guessing. The story centers around a young prosecutor of domestic violence--something Anna gained far too much personal experience with at a young age. Assigned to Laprea's case, Anna is disappointed when Laprea lies on the stand to protect her abuser (and the father of her twins). The tale turns even more tragic when Laprea turns up dead shortly after another fight with D'marco, who had convinced her he was going to change. Since Anna's familiar with the case's background, she ends up assisting in the prosecution of the homicide. What seems like an easy win turns out not to be when a shocking revelation about the deceased comes from the autopsy. Every one of these twists kept me intrigued. Law of Attraction is an excellent mystery mixed with romance as Anna finds herself attracted to two attorneys on opposite sides of the case.review copy

However the post mortem shows something more sinister setting Lorne Simkins and the team along a path littered with bodies and secrets. This is the first of the Justice series I've read and despite it being number 11, I didn't feel I'd missed out by not having read the predecessors. However I will be going back and starting from the beginning.I've now read two Mel Comley books, the other being Torn Apart and she is fast becoming a favourite crime author. Keep them coming Mel!Thank you to THE Book Club for giving me this advanced copy to read and review.

Book 11.Dubious Justice. This book follows Lorne in her quest to solve murders, it also follows Tony and his partner in trying to find missing persons. All this and they run a boarding kennel with Lornes daughter Charlie. You will need all your wits about you just to get passed the first chapter. The book gripped me from the off, I do think that Mel can rewrite the local phone directory and make it read great. This book was an incredible emotional journey, and I found myself having to take a break now and again just to get my breath back and keep my emotions in check. Very highly recommended read.5+ stars. 08 April 2015.

Lorne, in the temporary absence of her partner Katy, is working with her former partner, Sean Roberts. They initially investigate three murders of tradespeople, which are made to look like suicides. Lorne's gut instincts come into play and this develops into investigating very serious historical and current crimes. I felt this was written well by the author. I found it extremely moving in parts. Mel's husband and daughter added to the storyline. I would recommend this to readers and all of the Justice Series. Well done, Mel Comley.

By sagebrush23 I found this book very helpful and full of practical knowledge that focuses on creating good eating habits in very simple ways. This is a good long-term investment in your overall health and a great alternative to fad diets. It explains the Oriental Medicine view of healthy digestion — or warm digestion in a very accessible way and gives simple advice that is easy to apply. It’s a quick read and is immediately applicable to your own life. It also addresses common misperceptions regarding salt, fats and oils and low-fat foods. If you've been avoiding these foods, definitely give this a read. I also liked the fact that it provides references for further reading. And there's also a nice section with remedies that you can easily find in your own kitchen. A great little book for your health!

Who would kill a charming antiques expert Rowland Egerton, the darling of daytime TV? Bill Slider and his team are on the case . . . ‘It’s quiet out there,’ says DS Atherton, at Bill Slider’s office window. ‘Too quiet.’ Right on cue, the phone rings. ‘Now look what you’ve done,’ says Slider. It’s a homicide. The post-Christmas lull is officially over. The deceased is antiques expert Rowland Egerton, the darling of daytime TV, stabbed to death in his luxurious West London home. The press are going to be all over this one like a nasty rash: the pressure’s on Slider for a result, and soon. Egerton’s partner, the bulky, granite-faced John Lavender, found the body; did he also do the deed? Or was it a burglary gone wrong? A missing Fabergé box and Impressionist painting point that way. But as Slider and his team investigate, none of the facts seem to fit. And it soon becomes clear that the much-loved, charming Mr Egerton wasn’t as universally loved, or perhaps as charming, as Slider was first led to believe . . .

Lesley As soon as you begin reading this novel it is obvious there have been previous books. Regardless of that, this novel can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. Sometimes an author doesn't do a very good job of giving new readers enough information to make them comfortable with character run-over from previous books but that definitely was not the case for me with this story. In fact, one of the first things I became comfortable with was how well established the relationships are with all the policemen working in the Shepherd's Bush station. Detective Inspector Bill Slider interacts with his superior officer and the members of his investigation team as if they are a well-oiled working team, taking advantage of the strength and being aware of the weakness of each member. Now they have been handed a murder investigation which involves the death of a popular television personality. The Beebs will not be pleased to have any negative publicity tarnishing its image with this real life drama. The team needs to solve this murder soon, if not sooner. As Superintendent Porson so succinctly puts it, "The early bird gathers no moss. Get on with it."Not only was this a good reading experience for me from the standpoint of the development of the mystery and everything involved in solving it, it was also quite interesting to discover this team of investigators and to get to know them as individual people. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I have already put Hard Going (A Bill Slider Mystery) on my Kindle and am considering ordering the print omnibus of the first three novels in the series. I like the low key humor in the novel and the way Porson mangles the sayings he's always throwing around in his conversations. The chapter titles are interesting, but something that can be easily ignored if you think they are too cutesy. I find myself having to go back after I finish reading the chapter to look up what the title was in order to figure out what it means. Often I am not interested enough to bother. So, humor to be taken as far as you personally want to take it or left alone if it doesn't interest you. At least the humor isn't allowed to interfere with the actual police investigation work. In my opinion, that's a good decision by the author.I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Well-written British procedural By CJ-MO Bill Slider and his team have been enjoying a lull in their work, but their newest homicide case is going to be tricky. The victim, Rowland Egerton, is a daytime TV celebrity known for his expertise on antiques. The press and Slider’s superiors want this case solved immediately, so Slider and team are being pressured to close what is proving to be a difficult and complex case.I have read many of the books in this outstanding series. “Star Fall” is not the best in the series, but is still an excellent British procedural. I like the main characters, especially the easy comradery between Slider and DS Atherton. I enjoy seeing Slider on the job with the members of his department, as well as seeing him at home with his family. This outing doesn’t have as much of Slider’s home life, and I think that’s was missing for me and made is less enjoyable that some of the other books in the series. The investigation itself is interesting. In Slider’s latest case, the victim’s life is more complicated that it looks like at the beginning, which makes the case more intriguing. The reader is taken every step of the way as the detectives try to get to the bottom of the murder of a popular celebrity from a television show resembling “Antiques Roadshow”. It was interesting to see the inner workings of the fictional show, as well as seeing how different the victim was in his personal life, as opposed to his public persona.Even this isn’t my favorite installment, readers who follow this series or who enjoy the books of author Deborah Crombie will find “Star Fall” worth reading.I received this book from NetGalley, through the courtesy of Severn House Publishing. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Somewhat boring mid-book spoils latest entry in charming and entertaining Bill Slider series By Jerry Bull “Star” is the 17th and latest in the author’s likable Bill Slider mystery set. Our Detective Inspector runs a police department in Shepherd’s Bush, a London suburb; and most of the stories feature a prominent murder. Herein, an antiques reality show celebrity is found stabbed to death; and the cops are hard up for clues. About the only suspect is the man’s business partner, who actually lived with the TV “star” part-time, when their retail antiques store didn’t require his presence. The story unfolds so slowly, that we were close to being really bored. A side plot of sorts finds Bill’s wife Joanna grieving over a recent miscarriage; and her sensitive hubby almost overdoes his concern – that issue got a tad tiring as well.Toward the very end, as some clues finally picked up and we all start to zero in on the villain, things got much more interesting as the case gets tidied up. The getting there was uncharacteristically plodding – so we would not recommend this latest as one of the better novels in this mostly enjoyable series.
