The mystery and suspense of the plot grips the reader By The Cosy Dragon (Rose Herbert) This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon.com. Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.Marc longs to be an author, but the words never seem to come to him in the city. After he breaks up with his abusive partner, he flees to Provincetown, where he's taken in by an old woman and her enigmatic companions.The novel is well realised, with scenery which I can vividly picture right now. There was only one inconsistency towards the end of the novel, when the Captain's journals appeared in two places at once. I can see them walking down the beach, and Marc trying to write in his tower, complete with the art workshop on one of the middle floors.I like that in this novel, all of the characters are ok with being one form of queer or another. This is a world I dream of, where it's ok to be yourself! Everyone in the novel has a role somewhere, even if it's not where you expect. They were lovely, three dimensional characters that reached out to me through just Marc's perspective - a mark of a strong writer.I spent most of the novel in suspense that Brandon would track down Marc. I knew he would eventually, but I didn't know how much Marc was going to be able to stand up against him. Marc draws people to him without even knowing it, and those people think he's worth a lot more than he gives himself credit for.The romance that occurs in this novel is subtly layered and sort of incidental. What threw me was some of the comments of Marc to himself about being extrainged from love. He had been so badly hurt (which is mainly just alluded to intriguingly through the novel), and yet he can't open up when someone else is trying to help! If the romance was the main theme, the reader wouldn't keep going.Instead, the mystery and suspense of the plot grips the reader. I wanted to know the history, and how all the competing interests would be served. I loved the ending. So happy, and yet, bittersweet, and arg, why didn't they fix things earlier.At some point recently in my reading, I have moved into the pure fiction genre. I never expected it to happen, usually finding those sort of novels boring and repeditive. But add a hint of mystery and a strong queer element, and you've got an avid reader on your hands.I give this novel a very solid 4 stars, moving up to 5 stars. It's just not a 5-stars for me because I don't have a strong desire to read it again. But by all means, go out there and buy it, it's awesome!

The story was different and engaging and the writing style drew me right in and didn't let me go. With an cast of interesting and compelling characters and quite a bit of heart, it was a very good read.

The stage setting is atmospheric, engaging, and painted with loving authenticity, merging past and present with lush descriptions and wry observations on how things change, how they remain the same.The estranged dowagers, Lola and Dorrie, are the kingpins around whom the plots within plots revolve. They have history neither is comfortable talking about, yet after Marc Nugent is given refuge he becomes the catalyst for setting events in motion that reveal the secrets and lies that have informed their sixty-odd year relationship. I absolutely adored these two strong, opinionated women—their compassion, insight and unwavering devotion to tradition and service to their community grounds every scene with a grace and style reminiscent of another day and age.The Homeport Journals is at once a romance, a mystery and a coming-of-age tale that touches on so many facets of the human experience that I was, quite simply, blown away. Michal is just a normal guy who really "walks the talk". His common sense approach to success is refreshing, and something of a contrast to other books I have read on how to succeed. He does not pull any punches and does not present any " pie in the sky" solutions for achieving success.However, despite the emphasis on success being the result of actual work, this book is inspirational and makes the reader realize that whatever their definition of success, it can be achieved.....step by simple step.Thanks Michal....I would recommend this book to anyone who has found success an elusive goal.

McEvoy This was the 11th book by Michal I have read this year, well actually the 8th book but I have read a few of them twice because they were so good. This book really packs a lot of punch into 35 pages. It is intended as an intro and overview of Michal's steps to success in any area of your life. And over the next 6 books in the series he will take us much deeper into each topic. This volume give some great advice and tips.The chapters in this book are:1. Do you believe success is in your hands? What is success, for you?2. What will success mean if you achieve it?3. The cost of pursuing success4. A successful pursuit: Jim Rohn's example5. The methodology to use in your pursuit Develop your success one piece at a time Let's revisit my experience Study the success of others A quick word about money and millionaires6. Claim success: you can do it There are many ways you can begin The six strategies7. Your next step Right now…In the first chapter Michal quotes Calvin Coolidge "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." And that advice rings true. Michal has lived it in his life and his books help give us tools to pursue our own dreams and goals. Later in the chapter he quotes Ray Kroc "Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get." Success will not come to most without hard work and persistence. Michal stresses that fact and does not sugar coat it. This is not a quick fix this is a tried and tested process and it is work! Quoting Earl Nightingale "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal." Michal asks "What kind of success do you want? The first thing to understand is this: You define your own success, so think about what it is for you. What do you yearn to be? A writer, a space rocket pilot; perhaps an entrepreneur or a great parent?" So knowing what you want you need to know what motivates you, he states "The meaning of success, for you must come from your heart. If it doesn't, you won't find the strength to pursue it. Your willpower will drain fast. You need a compelling reason to steadily pursue success. Reflect. What is your compelling reason?"I think the greatest single piece of advice from Michal in this book is "doesn't, you won't find the strength to pursue it. Your willpower will drain fast. You need a compelling reason to steadily pursue success. Reflect. What is your compelling reason?" Anything work having will take hard work. Michal does not water down that truth with platitudes. Later he states "Success is not grand. Success is not massive. And that's cool, I think." True success is the result of lots and lots of work, dedication, persistence and Michal reinforces that truth.Later Michal states: "In this series about pursuing success, I will each cover of these six disciplines in six different areas of your life at once. You wouldn't have a high probability of success. It's much better to study and implement them one by one." Those six steps are:1. Self-analysis. People of success know themselves.2. Health. You don't have to be a fitness fanatic to be successful. But you can do much more in every aspect of life if you take proper care of your body.3. Habits mastery. It is extremely hard to find a successful person who doesn't use consistent habits to achieve more.4. Focus. Vision. Goal setting. This topic can stray into the intangible, but I'll keep it down-to-earth.5. Socializing for business. Networking. It's hard to find a rich hermit.6. Reading and self-education. How to get ahead of the knowledge curve and stay there.Michal then goes on to state: "This book series is the 'back way in' to success. I believe that when you have a degree of mastery in each of these six tangible areas (common to most achievers), you will also be enjoying life!" He is guiding us with his own life as an example.This was another amazing book by Michal Stawicki. I highly recommend it and really look forward to the rest in the series! Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

"Simplify Your Pursuit of Success" will keep you on track with a laser-like focus.He is proof of someone who is living it out and seeing success in many areas of his life.I am both challenged and encouraged that I will find success in my life as well.

By Phyllis Rither This is Book #2 featuring the likable, yet vulnerable Deputy Sherriff Cal Sheehan searching for the truth of the skeletal remains discovered on his ex-girlfriend's property. Twists and turns in the plot keep the reader eager to turn the books' pages to discover if and how Cal Sheehan survives his new marriage, his ex-girlfriends demands and his ability to solve the case of Silver's Bones.

It is second in what may become a long-running series of detective novels. Chief among the many excellent characters is young county investigator, Cal Sheehan. He’s still finding his way as a member of the county sheriff enforcement unit. His fellow investigator is a cranky and older experienced cop who has just lost the election for sheriff to a woman, Patrice Clinton.That’s only part of the complex social net the author weaves around the investigator in this sequel to her first novel, “The Equalizer.” Sheehan is now married to a cop, a widow who comes with two young boys. The book opens with Cal Sheehan just back on duty after his honeymoon when he gets a call from an ex-girlfriend. A skeleton has been unearthed on her property.The story quickly devolves into a turbulent bog of detection and vandalism, domestic abuse, internal competition and other developing relationships. Cal has to somehow tread a narrow path between rising jealousy on the part of his new wife and proving his abilities as an ace investigator. Throw in some dysfunctional family members, a fifteen-year-old disappearance and you realize it takes a careful hand to sort it all out in logical and realistic fashion. That Bubany is able to accomplish these tasks with efficiency, dispatch and all while entertaining and keeping readers attached is a tribute. She’s a good writer and we quickly attach to some of the characters.As readers of this review will already realize, I liked this novel a lot although I’m not happy with the title. It has a few editing problems, but nothing that is deeply disturbing. I was presented with a copy of the novel by the author in exchange for nothing. I should also call attention to the fact that the publisher of Silver’s Bones is also my publisher. Make of that what you will.

I enjoyed reading this book By Kat's Reading Space I enjoyed reading this book....it kept me guessing as to who was behind all the "bad" stuff...I can usually guess who. I was surprised at the ending, didn't guess the ending and yet liked how it ended. A quick and engaging read.

Safir Let me say I was a fan of Mark Lukens after reading Ancient Enemy, to which I gave 5 stars. I thought it was a terrific supernatural thriller. Even to the end, it had a lot of guessing and things left unsaid. I love that. I next read the Exorcist's Apprentice and really liked that one, too. I don't remember if I gave that 4 or 5 stars. I was expecting as much with Night Terrors. In fact, I have a whole bunch of Mark's books on my wish list. I intend to read The Summoning, next. So this 3-star review is somewhat a statement of my expectations of Mr. Lukens, as it is an overall rating. I didn't feel it was up to his best. Understand that 3 stars means I thought it was okay. It is not a very negative review. I just expected more. Though there was the supernatural element (somewhat) in that the protagonist, Tara, had psychic powers and especially connected with the killer and his killings. But after that it really was a typical serial killer suspense novel. It followed a very formulaic plot and I even guessed the killer way ahead of time. It was not that hard, if you've read a lot of thrillers. The writing was good. The characters were fine. The idea was a bit cliché and that already made it hard to stand out. Given the premise, I'm not sure what he could have done differently, but it read like many other thrillers I have read. Not to say it was not enjoyable, just a bit too predictable and pat. And far from the supernatural mystery of Ancient Enemy. If you're looking for an easy read serial killer book, with psychic overtones, you may give this four stars. If you've read many of those kind of books and you're looking for something like Ancient Enemy, go with my 3 stars. It's okay, but not great. I really feel bad giving Mr. Lukens only 3 stars and hope for more from the next book of his. (I guess I'm in the minority on this review.)

Mystery: Pascal Tourret Private Detective
When Madame Duclos employs Pascale Tourret to help her to save her daughter from a life of crime, the investigation takes Pascale from his home in the Lot region of France to the busy streets of Paris. There, he encounters the activities of the underworld and particularly of Maurice Gautier, a man with no scruples.
Deeply entrenched into the drug cartel, Gautier is producing bad methamphetamine that is hitting the streets of Paris with regularity and killing college kids. On top of that, his organization are also importing cocaine from Colombia. Piecing together the movements of cartel is complex and takes Pascal through the streets of Paris but he is aided by his old colleague from the police department, who is happy to supply him with information to help in the investigation.
With no witness protection program available, how will Pascale get witnesses? How will he overcome the constraints of French law and gain sufficient evidence to put Gautier away? The story follows the progress of his inquiry.

I don't want to spoil the story to anyone who is interested in buying it but it's indeed a really good book I would recommend to anyone who wants to read some mystery genre. Also the price of the book is very economic for the entertainment it delivers!

Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again). So began A. M. I could barely finish it. The Female MC was left this huge home and lots of cash. , has a great job but has to take a mortgage to pay for the house ? Seriously?!!Ook, then she jumped all over the main male MC whose interested in buying the house and offers her body for sex in exchange for him keeping her dead daughter’s room EXACTLY the same way—do you get me on this??!!! Creepy!! The story just got weirder and weirder from there. And from there, the plot got even stranger- yes there was sex involved between the MCs but the absurdness of the plot made me just not like this story. I would not recommend this story. I would be willing to read this author again but not this story.My rating: 2.0 **

Hargrove, is that even though it is the third in the series, it definitely can be read as a stand alone.However, that may be the only thing I found good about this book.I'm giving it one star because I actually made it to the end. I think only to see how the train wreck ended. This feels so harsh, but it was just such a mess.It starts fine enough, young woman has lost her entire family. She's broken and broke. You learn that she's in cancer research but the taxes on the house she inherited are breaking her. But then all of this happens -The money situation never really mapped out for me. She was left $100K, I assume she makes decent money, but the taxes nearly bankrupt her within 4 years. But, I don't live in Charleston. This could be totally legit, it definitely made me pause and do some math. Not something I want to do while reading.Anyway...then she throws herself at the potential buyer of the house. I'm talking, indecent proposal s*** here. It was all kinds of strange. She's a nerd, not a sex pot so it really felt out of character. I get it, you're desperate to have access to the house but offering up your mom jean clad butt to a complete stranger is crazy town territory.Kestrel (awesome name - that's why it got an extra half star) kept telling her he was so bad and evil but his actions never supported that. Ever. He was actually a very sweet guy. All his talk about his dark past, was just that, talk.I could make a huge list of inconsistencies, but I won't. I'll just say it was full of them and I struggled. A lot.Not the book for me.

Loved Kestrel By snicklesloves2read I read Kestrel as a stand alone but will now be going back to read the other 2 books in the series Freeing Her and Freeing Him.Kestrel and Carter captivated me from the beginning. Once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down.I don't want to give anything away but this was a great story with 2 great lead characters.Talk about total opposites.Carter's life the last 4 years has been full of loss and pain. She is alone and devotes her life to her work. Carter is selling her parents home after trying for 4 years to keep up with taking care of it but she isn't mentally ready to let it go. Kestrel is trying to overcome the past of his father and become a be a better person. He relocates to Charleston, SC where he is looking to purchase a home. An unusual bond starts between the two of them.Kestrel and Carter are both broken in different ways. It wasn't easy for them but together they were slowly able to overcome their past and build a life together.

He rose through the ranks after enlisting as a Private. He has held assignments in both combat and peacetime ranging from Platoon Leader to the Office of The Secretary of Defense. For five years he served as the Army Liaison to the Television and Film Industry in Los Angeles. He is also a screenwriter and has several feature films produced from screenplays he wrote. He currently lives in Pensacola, FL where he writes full time and teaches Screenwriting at the University of West Florida.

As a history teacher, student and all around enthusiast I appreciated the historical accuracy relative to the time period. It was clever and engaging with the classic 40's investigator feel. The protagonist Johnny has just enough rough around the edges charm to make him desirable and rakish rather than cliche. Nicely done! Can't wait for the next installment!!

I'm trying to go slow because I don't want the story to be over too soon. This is an interesting book about gambling and murder in the Atlanta, GA area. The author writes as if he has personal experience there which makes the story seem realistic. Mr. Sinor knows how to make the characters come to life. The style of the book keeps you looking for the next thing to happen. I highly recommend it for people who like murder mystery and gambling. I don't like gambling myself. so it is interesting to see how the Dixie Mafia works.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A book to get lost in. By Jimmy Peacock Just finished reading Wrath of the Dixie Mafia....I must say it is the best detective story I have ever read. Would like to see it as a movie though while reading it I visualized various actors and actresses playing those parts. Almost like a movie in my mind. Can't wait for the next one. Mr. Sinor has a way with descriptive words that actually paint a picture for you as you are reading.
