The interviews with the "Forces of Character" in this book are very well conducted and provide interesting insight into the lives of influential people . More importantly, Chad focuses on the "forces" that make up their "character" (integrity, work ethic, commitment, honesty etc.). The book is very thought provoking and gives the reader a different take on the subject of character. You may even find that it provides an avenue to realign your own moral compass.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A GREAT READ! INTERESTING AND INSPIRATIONAL! By Bagelman This book is fantastic! I've always admired and looked up to Chad Hennings, a man of remarkable character. And in this book every interview adds another layer to what character is all about. We all know how great Staubach, Aikman and Popovich are, but hearing the stories of people like Tom Henricks and Virginia Prodan make this book truly a must read. Great stuff throughout!!!

Asselin The very word ‘promotion’ induces a thrill among all professionals, but unfortunately, many are unaware of the correct approach it. This book by Angelica Montorose is a wonderful resource for young professionals to be motivated, and put up their best performance. Both the internal and external factors for success have been emphasized upon – self-assessment, strategic thinking, skill development and building self-confidence are personal responsibilities, whereas networking, relationship management and influencing people are centered on the outside world. This is what makes the book complete – a thorough analysis of every possible aspect. Simple, articulate and straightforward in style, the book is rich in contents and is based on present day corporate settings. I am delighted to have it as a reference, not just for me but for any other in need of some quick advice.

The siren call of Storyville... New Orleans, 1914. No one cares much when a street whore is the victim of a bloody murder. Nor when a woman in a crib on the dirty back end of the red light district is found slain. But then a third ravaged body turns up in a house along one of the better streets, and an ailing Tom Anderson, the "King of Storyville," reaches out to Creole detective Valentin St. Cyr, who has left the scarlet streets behind. Against his own instincts and his wife Justine's wishes, Valentin heads back onto his old turf and into the investigation that propels The Iron Angel, the fifth novel in the award-winning series by David Fulmer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. We want more By Arthur A. Van Hecke I was glad to see David Fulmer has continued on with the St. Cyr mysteries and I am hoping for more. The plot and characters of the book neatly dovetail with the legendary Storyville district of early 20th century New Orleans. While reading the other St. Cyr mysteries is a nice background, they are not really necessary to thoroughly enjoy this book; the historical information and character developments in the prior novels are extremely interesting however and are highly recommended. David Fulmer is an excellent historical novelist and has done painstaking research to fully develop the the characters in this series; his books are a joy to read. The events of this book leave us at a point where the author could stop this series, but he could also continue. I sincerely hope he continues.

David Fulmer is a wonderful writer; I have read all the Valentin/Storyville books By Susan Bishop David Fulmer is a wonderful writer; I have read all the Valentin/Storyville books, and was pleased he finally wrote a new one. I am going to read again this series as I finished them some years ago.

David Fulmer skillfully weaves together three perspectives on this journey of suspense, madness, and revenge. The Storyville characters we know and love are back with new motivations and higher stakes. In a city where nothing is permanent--power, loyalty, even the land itself--they must find their own way to adapt or die. With the power that compels St. Cyr to return to the streets of Storyville, this book has brought back my favorite memories of old New Orleans.

Review 5 Stars: If you loved Tony Hillerman...Bytinhorse "tinhorse"on April 24, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA Jewish musician from New York; a female cop with the Navajo Tribal Police, her unemployed, alcoholic, and gay brother; a three-legged dog, and a "skinny, gray-haired" nurse named Sally who boasts she can "shoot the short hairs off a pig's balls blindfolded." These are the main characters in Sandra Bolton's latest mystery, "Key Witness: A Southwest Mystery," who inadvertently become entangled with the Aryan Brotherhood and the Mexican Mafia. Not since Tony Hillerman have we seen a writer portray so well the stark beauty of the Southwest and the solitary lives of the Navajo, woven onto a background of suspense and violence. I hope to see these characters again!

About the Author

Sandra Bolton’s novels are based on her real-life experience with diverse settings and cultures. Her first novel, A Cipher in the Sand, was inspired by her work in the Peace Corps in Honduras, while Key Witness was inspired by her years spent teaching Navajo children. She honed her writing skills under the tutelage of southwestern mystery writer Steven F. Havill, and she holds a master’s degree in guidance counseling. Originally from California, she raised three children while traveling the globe with her military husband. She is currently at work on an anthology of short stories. She resides in Raton, New Mexico, with her cat, Fidel, and her dog, Sam.

Never a dull moment from the first chapter to the very end. A fun read full of mystery, suspense, romance and laugh out loud humor. I think the story would make a great dramatic comedy movie. Great characters and so many passages that warrant reading again. Also, I like how you brought in some of the Navajo culture and Southwestern flavor which added to the intrigue of the story.

Fantastical storyline; a fun read By Cheryl Stout I thoroughly enjoyed this jaunt through the Southwest with Jewish pianist Abe Freeman and his three legged dog, Patch. Abe is running from dark memories in his past in New Jersey, driving west, doing odd jobs. He stops at a campsite in New Mexico and ends up sharing a joint with a drifter - who ends up dead. And evidence points to Abe being the killer. Thus starts a convoluted story that has Abe meeting a Navajo Nation policewoman, members of the Aryan brotherhood, the Mexican Mafia and more.I enjoyed author Bolton's style of writing and especially enjoyed the descriptive passages about the Southwest. The background on the Navaho - the Dinétah - was enlightening too. Some of the story seemed "out there" but then this is fiction and I just enjoyed the characters, the settings, and the fantastical storyline.I hope there will be a sequel one of these days so I can catch up on Abe and Patch.Earlier reviews mentioned some editing problems. The book has been revised recently and I didn't notice any typos or editing issues.NOTE: I received a copy of this book from Thomas & Mercer through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

Vinny and Michael Butler along with their mum Queenie and their children make up the larger part of characters but believe me th By BCB & More This is book 3 in the series featuring The Butlers. Book one was entitled The Trap and Book two was Payback. If you intend to read the series in order (which I would recommend) DON’T continue to read this review as there will inevitably be spoilers. The Butlers are most certainly back, only this time we are a few years on and everybody is that little bit older and have a whole new set of problems. Vinny and Michael Butler along with their mum Queenie and their children make up the larger part of characters but believe me there are plenty more that also appear and when things start to unravel it seems like everybody comes out of the woodwork.A large chunk of story gets under the skin of Little Vinny Butler and to be frank it turned my stomach. For those readers that have followed the story, you will all no doubt be dying to know what happens to various characters especially him. Well in typical KC fashion, she has got all the characters, chucked them in the mixer and by the time they come out you once again have more questions than answers. This book is actually really difficult to review without mentioning the plot, but I feel like the plot is something that has evolved with the series, and to mention any of it would be a spoiler. Something that definitely felt different which I LOVED was the presence of the Mitchell’s. I have a sneaking suspicion that Kim Chambers has a plan with the next book, and if I’m right it’s going to be one mighty awesome book?!?!?!? Kim’s writing and storytelling seems to be getting better with each book she writes. This latest certainly pulls no punches and is packed to the rafters with drama, murder, and of course everybody doing the dirty! I was really shocked with what KC did with a few characters but think it was probably a necessary evil to make way for the second part of the plan with this storyline.By the end of this book, my brain is already creating questions and I’m desperate to know what happens with the next part. Because we have seen the characters evolve, the younger characters are becoming adults…leading the way for a whole new wave of gangsters! Like I said before, if my instincts are correct then KC’s plan will involve taking massive risks with the next book which just makes me want to read it all the more. I did at one point wonder if there was TOO much packed into one book, but realised this is a necessary evil with a series that has progressed in this way. This was another absolute corker of a book which will please the fans no end and will no doubt will make it to the Bestsellers list in its first week.

The no-nonsense storyline was a refreshing change for me from the sometimes silly cozies. I enjoyed the well-thought-out plot and execution of the mystery. I had no inkling for ages who dun it and when it was revealed, it felt real and authentic. Read Plum Gone for a plum good time! And I can't wait to try making the malfatti!

By Love Reading I really enjoyed this book and immediately felt the same uneasiness that Monica and Erin felt as they explored the house. Of course the first big discovery was quite unsettling. For a man who liked being called the American, Mark Twain spent a surprising amount of time outside the continental United States. Biographer Roy Morris, Jr., focuses on the dozen years Twain spent overseas and on the popular travel books―The Innocents Abroad, A Tramp Abroad, and Following the Equator―he wrote about his adventures. Unintimidated by Old World sophistication and unafraid to travel to less developed parts of the globe, Twain encouraged American readers to follow him around the world at the dawn of mass tourism, when advances in transportation made leisure travel possible for an emerging middle class. In so doing, he helped lead Americans into the twentieth century and guided them toward more cosmopolitan views.

In his first book, The Innocents Abroad (1869), Twain introduced readers to the “American Vandal,” a brash, unapologetic visitor to foreign lands, unimpressed with the local ambiance but eager to appropriate any souvenir that could be carried off. He adopted this persona throughout his career, even after he grew into an international celebrity who dined with the German Kaiser, traded quips with the king of England, gossiped with the Austrian emperor, and negotiated with the president of Transvaal for the release of war prisoners. American Vandal presents an unfamiliar Twain: not the bred-in-the-bone Midwesterner we associate with Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer but a global citizen whose exposure to other peoples and places influenced his evolving positions on race, war, and imperialism, as both he and America emerged on the world stage.

American Vandal: Mark Twain Abroad, by Roy Morris Jr.

Review Morris is a first-rate tour guide. He knows his subject, cites other authorities with respect and presents a good deal of information with easygoing, professional smoothness. [An] entertaining and―despite its title―eminently civilized book. (Michael Dirda Washington Post 2015-03-18)American Vandal provides a fresh account of the great satirist’s life and work by arguing that his world view was the product of experience that was unusual for a popular American writer in this period. It offers us an account of the dozen years in total which Twain spent overseas, part of a life of travel that included twenty-nine transatlantic crossings, excursions across India, New Zealand, the Mediterranean and Caribbean… One strength of American Vandal is that Morris places Twain’s travel writings at the heart of his achievement. (Tom F. Wright Times Literary Supplement 2015-06-10)If you want a guide through [Twain’s] travelogues or through the experiences that produced them, then you could not find a better one than Twain biographer Roy Morris Jr. He is not merely well-informed about his subject, he is truly attuned to the mind and sensibility of the man… American Vandal shows a consistently sure and wise touch. (Martin Rubin Washington Times 2015-04-29)In this vibrant, fresh look at the venerable writer, historian Morris traces Twain’s journeys and his evolving perspective on world politics and peoples… A brisk narrative and sensitive insights make this book a delight. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-01-15)For readers not familiar with Mark Twain’s travel literature, Morris will open up a new facet of his extensive writing career… This lively overview provides an accessible entry point to the lesser‐known works of a great American writer. (Publishers Weekly 2015-03-16)Only an accomplished storyteller should dare to take up the life of our most revered raconteur, and Morris measures up. There is no shortage of Twain biographies; one as well researched and as well told as this one deserves to be among them. (Lawrence Howe, author of Mark Twain and the Novel: The Double Cross of Authority)Morris effectively evokes both the personal and political realities behind Twain’s fictions and semi-fictions to demonstrate how Twain himself debunked then-prevalent myths of travel and of national character. American Vandal gives readers a fresh view of Mark Twain while casting a revealing light on American identity. (James Leonard, editor of The Mark Twain Journal)Morris writes smoothly and engagingly about Mark Twain’s travels, through life as much as through foreign scenes. (D. E. Sloane Choice 2015-12-01)

About the Author Roy Morris, Jr., is the author of numerous books, including Lighting Out for the Territory: How Samuel Clemens Headed West and Became Mark Twain.

Satisfying Followup By ex-rocker Not as enjoyable as the first book, which covered Twain's life in the west, this is still a good read and does a satisfying job completing Twain's story. Lots of interesting details concerning other writers and movers and shakers of the day add to the book's description of the times Clemmons lived in. Recommended- but read the first volume before this one to get the whole picture.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mark Twain: his passion for travel By James Denny Author Roy Morris, Jr. does a deep dive into the relationship or more specifically, the passion for travel that was Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) oracle for experience. In spite of living in Hartford in the key years when his children were young, most readers of Mark Twain do not realize just how much in his latter adult years Mark Twain traveled, much of it with his family in tow. There were many, many extended trips to Europe in the last twenty years of the 19th century, especially the years 1881-1900.Twain and his family lived for long periods in Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Italy for months, even years at a time. Twain also did adventurous trips to other parts of the world, Australia, India, the Hawaiian Islands, Bermuda, Turkey, Africa and the Middle East.Of course, Mark Twain will always be known best for his seminal works: "Life on the Mississippi;" "Tom Sawyer;" Huckleberry Finn;" his period-set pieces based on life in Hannibal. But "Innocents Abroad," "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" and a host of other works reflect his passion for travel, for "movement" as Morris likes to call it.Morris does a nice job of integrating Twain's works with his travel ventures and with key events that happen to him and the members of his family, his beloved wife Livy and his three daughters. Many readers will know of the tragic aspects of Twain's later life, losing two of his daughters in their twenties and in the same time-frame, his wife, despite the fact that she was ten years his junior. Morris reveals how poor a manager of his money Twain was. Twain spent the better part of his latter years lecturing, making hundreds of public appearances for audiences large and small for the purpose of paying his debts and to regain respectable solvency. Although Twain was a born raconteur, the constant travel, touring and lecturing could be grueling.Morris digs into the philosophy and principles that Twain held and/or rejected, as life events transformed his views. An optimist as a young man, Twain became much more a pessimist and bitter as he became older. On the other hand, he was more prejudiced as a young man and less prejudiced as an elder. As Morris points out, Twain is an author who continues to be widely read in the United States and across the world because he reflects so much of the American experience.

Rereading helps me to memorize quotes and passages of books I cherish. Then, it is on to reading (or rereading parts of) the entire Mark Twain Collection.

"One of the best mysteries I've read in years." "Bergerac with cider!" Escape to the country? Or escape to murder...? When a hiking group finds a very dead body at a local beauty spot, D. I. Zig Batten begins to regret his transfer from urban Yorkshire to not-so-sleepy Somerset. Is it a coincidence that the victim worked at the vast private estate of Wake Hall – home of a shifty horse-sales business run by a slap-happy Northern adversary and his crew? What exactly is being transported in the horse-boxes that trundle in and out of Wake Hall? And what is the role of the maverick Lady Wake? Batten strives to find out, while juggling liaison with the Greek police, escalating thefts, and tensions within his new team. His daydreams, the victim’s past, and the increasingly complex real world produce as many questions as answers, until - against a backdrop of Christmas celebrations - the human cost of crime reaches tragic heights. Reluctantly, Batten must fly to Greece to seek a solution…. 'A January Killing', the much-awaited sequel, is now for sale on Amazon.

Review

  • "Beautifully written, with acutely observed people and places...funny, moving, heart-warming, a complex story with enjoyable twists and turns - I was surprised and indeed shocked at some points."
Yvonne McGuinness
  • "Great book. It's clearly the first of a series and I hope the next one is available soon."
Irene Glynn
  • "An excellent read - gripping from the start. I can't wait for the next one."
  Jo Neagle.

From the Author

  • 'A Killing Tree' takes place in the real landscape of Somerset in the West Country of England - famous for its orchards, vintage cider-makers, and distinctive rural accents.
  • 'A January Killing', the sequel, begins with a 'Wassail' - an ancient winter ceremony in which music and drumming are used to rid the apple orchards of evil spirits. Shotguns are then fired into the bare branches to spark a fresh crop of apples.
  • One particular shotgun, though, is fired with more malicious intent...
  • Keep a lookout for 'A January Killing, which will be published before Christmas 2015.

About the Author Paul Toolan was born in northern England but is now a southern softie living in rural Somerset. After a long career as a teacher and senior manager in Further Education and Universities he turned to writing, and has successful Christmas musicals under his belt. This is his first crime novel - and the second and third are in full swing. Like his protagonist, he enjoys walking, gardens, fishing and the occasional whisky. Unlike him, he enjoys travel - to Greece and Crete in particular.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By Gloria Antypowich I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will admit that at first I was distracted from the actual story, by the the UK idioms that are very different from North American speech even though we all speak “English.”I read when I go to bed, and I was constantly reading lines to my husband, because I found the expressions so amusing. But all laughter aside, there is a real detective novel hidden beneath all those words.Detective Zig Batten (CID) finds himself exported from urban Yorkshire to rural Sommerset in England. (One thing that surprised me was the difference in dialect between this two areas—it could be equated to the difference between west coast dialect in Canada and that of the Eastern provinces which are several thousand miles apart.)Zig’s irreverent free thinking sort of got him in a bind in Yorkshire, and the move to Sommerset saves face for his career. He is a thorough detective, but he wasn’t above bending the rules when he thought it was warranted, so he has to settle in and make the best of his position in a new area.On his first day a bunch of elderly walkers discover a dead man beside a tree on a hill on their walking trail. Before he even gets a chance to settle into his new office, (that of the mysterious Chief Inspector Jellicoe) Zig Batten is thrown head-on into the mystery that unfolds through the many twists and turns in the happenings at Wake Hall and the other “entrepreneurial” illegal exploits in the district.Beside the enthralling activities in the area, we learn a lot about Zig Batten through his internal dialogue. He has experienced a painful childhood, a failed relationship, and as the story advances, he is clearly wishing for the opportunity to have an ordinary life. The characters in this book are perfectly drawn: flawed, but believable and they capture your attention. The mystery in this story is well crafted. It contains the elements of murder, betrayal, vengeance, and international criminal activity that happens beneath the very noses of the police, the people in the community and the people of Wake Hall.A great read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One Awesome Read!! By Aislynn I'll be honest. I am *very* picky when it comes to detective/ mystery novels. I decided to give this book a chance, and boy am I glad I did!It was engaging right from the start, full of British humour and wit. Toolan did a great job of ramping up reader curiosity regarding Lawrence Vann (who immediately took on the appearance of James Spader for me!), and the mysterious Chief Inspector Jellicoe. I still want to know more about that mystery!!I adored the play on names, most especially Zig Batten and his Sergeant Chris 'Crystal' Ball. Zig's reminiscing and inner monologue commentary are great. They give wonderful insights into Zig's past, and into his nature.Things are set so that a series can grow up around Batten/Ball and I certainly hope one does! To all who enjoy sleuthing mysteries, check this book out! I am confident that you'll enjoy it .**If you are an American reader, unfamiliar with British English, there are idioms, euphemisms, and slang words (and some everyday words), that are very different from American English. Most are easy to suss out from connotation. Just wanted to throw the warning out there for those who might either dislike reading British English books, or are unfamiliar with differences between British English and American English. They aren't quite the same language!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A wonderfully written novel! By Michael Lynes A Killing Tree by Paul Toolan is a wonderfully written novel - full stop.Presented in the classic mystery/suspense/detective style; it is a tour-de-force of the art, eschewing the well worn cliche's of the genre for a fresh perspective and deep character development. In this first story (of hopefully many), we are introduced to Inspector Zig Batten of the CID. Inspector Batten is an irreverent iconoclast with a persistent inner dialog which verges on the poetic. This introspective is skillfully woven throughout the story and thru it we come to appreciate and admire this complex persona as he (and his stolid Sergeant Ball) lead his team in the investigation of a mysterious death that occurs literally the same day the 'Yorkshire city import' starts his new job in rural Somerset. The tale picks up from there as Mr Toolan crafts a well paced story full of complicated characters with everyday flaws and foibles that make their interactions believable and fascinating.I gave this book a rating of five stars and very well deserved. I await the continuation of this series with great anticipation.

This is an excellent example of could be or not. However, the storyline is exciting from beginning to end. Political thrillers are always about power, but you will be amazed with this one.....WR

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing tale By Barry Morris Fascinating political story which would have been an easy read.Unfortunately the author desperately needed an editor to clean up all the grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Revise and republish.

However, this book needs MAJOR editing for grammar and punctuation. That REALLY detracted me from enjoying the book as much as I would have liked. Really too bad.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended By Darcia Helle Easy Target is a mystery/suspense novel that kept me absolutely engrossed. The plot is multi-layered, without being overly complicated or confusing. As this story unfolded, I was right there in the midst of things, trying to solve the mystery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist knocked me off balance.Hilborne does a superb job of putting us in the mind of a victim. We feel what it's like to survive a brutal crime, how difficult it is to move on, and how much it changes the course of your life. And we start to wonder if that all makes a person more vulnerable to future crime. While this is the second book in a series, it's easily read as a stand-alone.

A murder occurs which appears to have a link to an cold case. The detective involved in the first case is assigned the new case and he must confront the reality that his inability to solve an earlier crime might have caused the death of other people. The book is very easy to read.

It starts out playful and sexy when an SEC football player finds himself irresistibly attracted to a girl in his English class. But don’t get too comfy with the college romance, because you’re about to tumble into a thriller that you won't be able to put down. The best supporting role goes to Kaitlyn, the football player’s psycho ex-girlfriend. Michael is downright terrifying, but Kaitlyn is one b*tch you just love to hate! I couldn’t get enough.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A 1907 page turner By M. Smith "The Dangerville Inheritance" is a mystery novel concerning the possible murder or suicide of a horse owner found dead hours after a major race, which his horse won. A brilliant lawyer teams up with a private detective to determine whether the owner died before or after the race, which might nullify the horse's win. What's more, the detective suspects the dead man may have been involved in a blackmailing case he is working on. Also involved is a question of inheritance of an Irish title and associated estates. The story has enough twists and turns and red herrings to keep you guessing right up to the end. In fact, the ultimate twist is revealed in the last paragraph of the book. My only reservation is that I had difficulty following the ins and outs of British inheritance - a major plot driver. The book, written in 1907, assumes the reader has knowledge of turn-of-the-century British inheritance laws. I found the book highly enjoyable and difficult to put down. Recommended.Update 6/11/15:Some of the same characters appear in the author's earlier book "The Mauleverer Murders". Reading that book first would make some of the relationships in this book clearer.

His only chance to recover is for his race horse, Finality, to win the upcoming Oaks race and the 80,000 pounds he will gain as a result. The horse is a heavy favorite to win and much money is bet on the horse. This may prove disastrous to bookmakers who are taking those bets. Captain Nevile is found have been murdered just before the race was run. Finality came in first but as a result of the murder is disqualified. Was his murder tied in to the race? There are plenty of suspicions and suspects in this somewhat convoluted mystery. We have bookmakers, money lenders, and possibilities of bigamy, illegitimate children, fraudulent claims to titles and estates, blackmail, etc. Captain Nevile seemed to be involved in a good deal more than just horse racing. The murder could have been done to cover up any of those threats to various people. The possibilities seem endless. The story is heavy reading. The first few chapters are more of a prologue and the reader my wonder why they are even in the book as the story actually seems to start with Captain Nevile and his financial problems and what transpires after that. Only at the end of the book, after the death of Captain Nevile is explained does the author make a reference to the Dangerville inheritance, which by then the reader has forgotten all about. Much of the book is rather ponderous with dialogue coming in pages long paragraphs. The final solution is more conjecture than anything backed up by actual proof. It took a good deal of determination on my part to read through to the end.

It was better than many, and did have a twist at the end. There were whole chapters I skimmed or skipped because I was not interested in the details, but overall it was an OK read. Readers of the time obviously had much longer attention spans than readers today. There were far better mysteries written at that time, but also many that were far worse. If you are interested in seeing what was printed during that time period I would recommend it.
