This is an excellent mystery with plenty of suspense and some romance too. You will love Laurel and feel for her as she gets some really bad breaks. Her faith in God never fails though. I couldn't imagine going through the things she had to face. And then the suspense got to a point where I just couldn't sleep. I had to find out what happens. I don't want to say too much and ruin anything, but you won't be disappointed. Very surprising twists near the end. She does a brilliant job of developing realistic characters who are all living with past hurts and experiences that draws the reader in immediately . Throughout the story, these characters meet and impact each person's world view in such a way that they must confront their past. It is a great read - and kept me reading till the end. I highly recommend this book.

This is not the story of how Nick accepts the death of his lover, Harker, and learns to move on. There is no acceptance. There is no moving on. Grief lessens with time, but it never disappears. It continually burns you from the inside. Nick says it best in Boystown 5: Murder Book:“Grieving is like being set afire. Except when you try to put out the flames they disappear; when you try to salve your wounds you find your skin unblemished. You take a breath, thinking the worst has passed, and then grief bursts into flame anew. It rages, it roars, it smolders, all at its own unfathomable whim. You can’t shake it; you have no choice but to burn.”Nick is grieving the loss of his lover and the years they may have had. He’s also grieving the loss of his lover as he knew him. The Harker Nick knew wouldn’t have abandoned him, wouldn’t have left him willingly, without an apology or an explanation. Nick is so burned by his loss, he no longer wants to trust anyone. He leaves everything and everyone to live a life of anonymity.A year later Nick is dragged from his year of anonymity by the unlikeliest person in Chicago. This person has a murder for him to solve – a fantastic mystery full of plot twists. I loved trying to stay ahead of events, thinking I knew exactly what was going on only to be stumped again. But for me the mystery is less important than Nick’s attempt to return to his former life. Not just a life prior to his year as a bartender and drunk, but a life before his loss of Harker, before the AIDs epidemic, before his life became saturated with death. But there’s no escaping any of these things. Nick returned to the world, only to discover that it’s dealing with the very issues he was avoiding; loss & grief.I don’t know if there’s any resolution to be found in “From the Ashes.” Thornton provides no easy answers to life and death and nor should he. His books reflect the hard truths of life, one of which is that life is a series of questions to which we rarely discover answers. To quote Nick:“Questions, all I had were questions. It occurred to me that questions were really all there ever was. We almost never found answers in life. One of the things I liked about my job, one of the reason to go back to it, was that every once in a while, I stumbled across an answer. And that mattered, didn’t it?”In the end Nick may be a changed man, his circumstances may have changed, but he is as he’s been from the start of the series; a man who focuses on solving crimes because he cannot solve the mysteries of his own life.What I want most to express is the love I feel for this book, Nick Nowak and this series in general. Like most of my favorites, the Boystown books make me laugh and cry. They frustrate and confuse me. They make me rethink myself and my life, but provide no false closure. I am so grateful Marshall Thornton is continuing this series. I really don’t know how I’ve lived without it so long.

Phoenix arising By Sofia Whilst I was in the first chapters of this book, I saw that a friend of mine had finished it and was bemoaning the fact that she had to wait a year for another instalment. I was a bit blasé about it as that is what happens in a series. Now I want to whining like she did, do I have to wait another year for another instalment. These couple of days I had gotten used to Nick again and now I have to do without again, I certainly feel like pouting here.What to say about the actual book. Thornton has not lost his touch. I think he is getting better like wine. The flow is smooth and so nice on the palate. We pick up Nick after a year of mourning Harker. He is stuck in a drunken rut with all his hope dashed. But help comes from an unlikely source and help it is.The crime and its resolution is one of the best in this series. It is intricate, interesting and surprising. The characters involved pull at you and make you care about their story and it was a joy seeing Nick picking up the threads again. You could almost see him come to life.This is a book of loss, mourning, rebirth and continued living and I loved reading it.

This book is exactly what it says… Where murder book broke my heart, from the ashes was about the process of healing with the added bonus of a good detective story mixed in. I have to reiterate just how much I love Nick. He's such an intelligent, well thought out character. He's one of the few characters whose inner dialogue I love. A great job. I look forward to the next book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great New Series By M. Brown Freddie Wolf has returned to Dog Mountain, Oregon, to take a job as a reporter for the local newspaper. She had been a crime reporter in Portland but now she is covering dog-related events and stories in her hometown. She lives with her recently divorced sister, Lou, who owns a pastry shop named The Barkery. In case you have not already guessed, Dog Mountain, Oregon, is crazy about canines. And do not tell anyone, but Freddie is not a dog person.After there has been a murder in the dog park, Freddie finds herself wanting to cover the story. And when her sister becomes a person of interest, she needs to find the killer before her sister is charged with a crime she did not commit. This will not be easy to do, though, because there are a lot of people who may have wanted the victim dead. Can Freddie find the culprit before her sister is put away forever?This is a brand new series for author Meg Muldoon and it is off to a great start. The characters are interesting and I want to learn more about them. They are well developed and realistic and they all have some baggage that they carry around with them. This should lead to some interesting storylines in future books. And there are a lot of animals involved with the story, which is always a plus.The mystery is well plotted and there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I did not figure out the killer until it was revealed at the end. But to me the mystery was secondary to getting to know the characters. I would not have cared if there even was a mystery to solve, that is how much I enjoyed reading about Freddie and Lou. Of course there are other characters besides the sisters and they all added to the story.One thing I found refreshing is that, unlike most cozies who have a group of friends trying to solve the mystery, this one was the two sisters. I thought this was a nice change and set the book apart from others.The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in describing the setting of this small town. I was quickly drawn in and I could picture the places in my head and found it was someplace I would like to visit. It would be fantastic to be somewhere that encouraged you to bring your dogs while shopping or eating.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. There are a few authors that I automatically get their new books because I know they will be good. No questions asked, I know I need to read the book. Meg Muldoon is one of those authors for me.If you have not read any of her books, pick up this book as well as her other series and enjoy the read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Cozy Feelings for a Cozy Mystery By Cheryl A. Graham I enjoyed reading this book, the first I've ever read by Meg Muldoon. What I liked most about it was that it takes place in my home state of Oregon, in a clearly fictional town in the real Willamette Valley, and which wouldn't be far from my hometown of Corvallis. Being a huge dog lover of all breeds, it was fun reading about the primary character's development of dog love…as well as her ability to learn to love another man after getting hurt (spoiler alert?). I also really appreciated the ethics of the main character, who applied ethical living to her personal life as well as her profession. My only real criticism of the book is that it contained quite a few grammatical errors (e.g., use of adjectives for adverbs: "…treated me poor…") I had more tolerance for this even for my graduate students when I was teaching college, but it seems that a professional writer should have that stuff down, especially with grammar checkers and -- (perhaps even editors?). That said, I've noticed far more grammar and spelling errors in Kindle edition books than I ever picked up in hard copy books. It would seem that what went into a hard copy book would transfer directly to a virtual version, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's true. Perhaps copy for virtual books are input separately rather than formats simply transferred. Just "wondering out loud." I'd recommend this for light reading and I'll probably read more of Meg Muldoon.

Dogs, a cat, a murder and a bakery..... what's not to like? A delightful first in a new series by Meg Muldoon. I was hooked by the cover art and once I opened the book I was hooked on the story. This mystery takes place in a small town known for its love of dogs...its Dog Town U.S.A. We follow family relationships threaded through secondary characters as the murder moves along through the subsequent investigation of it. You come to know believable characters and the ending leaves one wanting to know them better. I can usually guess who the murderer will be. This was not the case which was a plus. Although this book is to be a series it does not leave you hanging at the end. I came away from the book both satisfied and looking for more. If you are looking for a book to get lost in for an afternoon or two I highly recommend 'Mutts and Murder'. I look forward to the 2nd book in the series I am very glad I didn't miss this great read!

By Cheryl in NY The first book may be free, but you should just buy the boxed set because you will fall in love with the characters and the mysteries and the way that they solve them. Each book solves it's own mystery while the series continues the story lines of their lives. I love the friendships, support, morals, and legal dilemmas , I'm not ready for the series to end..

It's a good, clean read and has everything. Romance, murder, the whole shebang. I recommend it to anyone who likes romance and murder, etc.

It was a wonderful surprise to discover the first five books in a collection. I hate getting invested in a character and then having to wait months for the next book in a series. I learned a lot while enjoying the excitement of the chase in catching the murderers. I look forward to more books by Ms Leigh.

It begins the series of the books about Josie DuPuy and her life as a police officer and her rise to police captain, but this story is certainly not exclusively about that. The story involves mystery and intrigue based on vigilantism. It's a fast read, and maybe that's because you won't want to put the book down.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the beautiful detective of Homicide By Jean Kilczer Set in Phoenix and surrounding areas, author Berkeley Rourke gives us an in-depth look at police investigation of homicides, including the "blue wall," where police officers defend their own, and the resentment between departments that prevents them from sharing information.Rourke's knowledge of police procedure is as sure-footed as his characters, who breathe life as close as your relatives and friends. From Josie Du Puy, the beautiful detective of Homicide, whose excellent police work overcomes the force's innate discrimination against women officers and gains her the respect of her colleagues, to James Cade, the strapping Captain of the Homicide Division, a man anxious to retire but caught up in two homicides where the killers seem to have a canny understanding of police protocol. Perhaps too good for civilians. With both victims involved in narcotics, the question of a vigilante group begs inquiry.Solidly based, as are all of Rourke's novels, the murderers' motives and the tracking of their trail is sprinkled with "bread crumbs" that lead us to the killers. The story is intriguing. The characters move through it as fully-fleshed-out-people.I'm giving THIRD TIME NOT A CHARM five stars for its solid-as-bricks grounding in police procedure, an intriguing story, and characters who will hold your interest

It takes a look at what makes a killer and the influence of what we see around us. As a cop, Josie DuPuy sees a lot. When a group of murders includes a police officer, Josie already has a feeling that those behind the killings are the ones who are supposed to be on the side of the law. Several cops calling themselves The Group have turned vigilante and now Josie and her companions are on a hunt to take down The Group who doesn't seem to have a problem profiling and killing both citizens and other cops.that don't fit it to their ideal profile. This book is well written and with enough technicality to satisfy even hard core police procedure addicts. Although the book is listed as having close to 700 pages, the authors writing style makes a compelling read feel like it is too short and I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series and following Josie DuPuy, a lady cop who knows her own mind and knows how to make others listen to what she has to say.

By kaylo Loved this book - good character development, interesting information about the Magna Carta that I either didn't know or had learned about in school and had forgotten. All of the hugely important parts of the Magna Carta are every bit as relevant today as they were 800 years ago. I always enjoy books by P.J. Thurbin

I just love reading this series, the moment I can get my hands on another book I grab it, and then I usually start to read it and barely stop til its done, I'm a big believer in good over evil and justice being done, but its the way the story moves along that hooks me.

They are all superb and repeating my praise seems silly. This being the last, as far as I know, I feel as if friends have gone on an extended leave of absence.

For only a few dollars more than the other coloring books by this brand, you get 3 times the content. It basically combines the Original Coloring for Grown-Ups, the College one, and the Holiday one. It's a very large coloring book. So funny, our parents in their 50s thought it was super funny too.

There is significant water damage to the book and parts of the cover are worn or torn. The book was obviously wet at one time and then air dried. Most pages have water stains and the pages are creased. Highly disappointed!

I wasn't expecting much, but ended up not being able to put my Kindle down. This is an awesome suspense/action book by Anders Jallai. There was never an issue with this book ever slowing down . It kept me guessing and literally on the edge of my seat. This has been the first book I have read of Anders Jallai, I know I will be coming back and reading some more of his work.All I know is if you love these types of books, you are going to become a fan of Jallai.

Anything having to do with history he loves to read and dissect. This not only deals with having to stay alive but also having to do convert arms sales. It's based on partial true story so that in itself keeps one intrigued enough to try and figure out what's real and what's not. I am reading it first and well since history is not Forte is all false to me lol but as soon as my husband gets finished I am sure I will know which is which. It doesn't take forever to get from one point to the next so I think it's well worth the money to buy it if you care anything for history at all and suspense.

Suspenseful and hard to put down By ChristinaKS I got this book for my husband but after reading the first few pages I could not put down my kindle, I had to keep reading. This is very suspenseful and hard to put down. The author Anders Jallai did such a wonderful job keeping this story exciting and intriguing. My husband and I can't stop talking about this book. We are looking to buy more of Anders Jallai books. I hate to spoil such a great book, and no point rewriting the intro, I will just say you must read this book. I am now a big fan of Anders Jallai.

About the Author Jacqui Chaplin grew up seventh of nine children. She is the eldest of three adopted children in the family. Born and bred in Melbourne, Australia Jacqui grew up in the south eastern suburbs and spent her teenage summers at Elwood Beach. The breakdown of her first marriage in the early 1990 s ignited her first diagnosed encounter with depression s black dog. Hence, the first part of the title of this book. Hindsight and knowledge allowed her to see that she had been experiencing bipolar symptoms for two decades. It became apparent to me throughout the novel that Mr. McShane has some inside knowledge and experience on the subject. As I read it, it was obvious this author didn't just do some research on the subject, but has some first hand knowledge. Realizing this, I couldn't stop reading to see much he was going to reveal. At times, I had to remind myself this is not a true story.....or is it? For his first book, Mr. McShane exceeded my expectations. This is an easy and intriguing read. He is a great story teller.

By SH I finished reading this book, as rival motorcycle clubs engaged in a gun war in Waco, Texas. That incident certainly brought credibility to McShane's book. The book focuses on the 1% of a Texas MC. It includes violence, explicit sex, and very rough language as it reveals the inside life of Los Patrons. This group will easily kill to protect their own members and/or property-women included in the "property" group. However, amidst the lifestyle, McShane weaves a story that is realistic by developing his characters and plot. There are several surprises along the way (most especially the ending) that kept my curiosity peaked. I read the book in 2 days. The author actually made these guys human, primarily through their intense commitment to family. While I couldn't personally relate to the characters, McShane did an impressive job of allowing me to view them through their own eyes. So, even with the violence and language, I enjoyed the book and am wondering what the future holds for Jake. Wanting more is always a sign that the author has grabbed his audience and this author certainly has!

If the Author had not put that in his bio I would not have believed this to be his first book. I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E!!!This is an in-depth look at the brotherhood, the author has captured the MC life so accurately this story is intense and brutal, and he gives us a highly charged story. I could not put this book down it’s a page turner and I kept turning the pages until there were no more to go. The story of Jack and how he meets Diego and gets pulled into the life and never let’s go. The story flows so smoothly you feel like your right thereIn the story alongside of Jack in his journey to being a brother, and at what costs get you there. This is a story of brotherhood with a side of romance. You learn the true meaning of LL&R of an MC brotherhood. I look forward to the next book from the Author, as he can tell a story.

Reading Dane and Craig's story was like being impaled with a knife of misfortune only to be embraced with something much stronger than the evils of the world.This is a story about strength. It's a story for anyone who's had to climb up from rock bottom. Superheros don't always wear capes. Sometimes they wield a scalpel or a paintbrush. There are forces on this earth that are beyond our control. You can't count on every day being perfect but you can choose who you can count on to get through the unknown.I love this story so much that I cry just writing this review. AJ Rose has a knack for just getting it right. She understands life, she understands love in all it's forms and because of that she translates it so very well.This is a must read. A must own!

I loved Dane and Craig so much! Dane was so broken and so beautiful inside at the same time. Craig was just plain awesome! Best boyfriend ever! If you haven't read this book yet, please do...you won't feel anything but the love these two men have for each other.

By V.J The books just keep getting better.....Anatomy of Perception is brilliant, educational with smooth transitions between the timelines and characters that are so real you wish you could meet them. It's a book that needs to be read slowly with frequent pauses to absorb and process what you've read. The story has not only complicated main characters but the secondary characters are well rounded and help pull you into the story. Sometimes I feel that there are stories that I can't really relate to, even though I may enjoy them, but with Perception I felt that there was a character, main or secondary that each reader could find that speaks to them in this story, that gives them a POV that works for them and helps them understand the other characters and the story.
