Pushing Petals Can Be Murder... 3 books. 600+ pages of Laughs, Mystery and Romance. 25% off the cover price. The Final Arrangement The Vulture is dead. The body of Quincy McKay's nemesis and biggest competitor in the floral business has just been discovered in a casket at the mortuary, complete with flowers on the lid. Derrick Gibbons, aka The Vulture, stole all of Quincy's funeral business, and now she's on a mission to get it back. But there's a problem--Quincy is now the main suspect in The Vulture's murder. Armed with only her Zombie delivery van, good intentions, and the business card of a handsome cop named Alex, she must find the killer, save the flower shop, and keep from ending up in the next casket. If she can dodge burning bushes, the plague of a polygamist ex, and her mother's Mormon Mafia Spy Network, her life with Alex and her shop could become the perfect arrangement. Deadly Arrangements All florist Quincy McKay wants is success in business, a happy family and the perfect romance with Alex Cooper, the hottest cop in the state. Not necessarily in that order, of course. Is that so much to ask? The trouble is, between Alex’s job and planning weddings, it’s getting harder and harder for Quincy and Alex to find any time to themselves. Every time the flames of passion ignite between them, someone or something shows up to fizzle the fire, including her meddling mother, her formerly absent father and even Elma, the handsiest waitress in the West. Wedded bliss is contagious in small town Hillside. Should be great news for Quincy, except that one groom is missing and another is the prime suspect. Hard for a florist to make a living that way, and even harder for her to stay out of the investigation, especially when the suspect is her sidekick, K.C.’s fiancé. Just when she thinks nothing else could go wrong, a ghost from Alex’s past comes back to haunt them both, which could keep them apart forever, if someone doesn’t kill Quincy first. She’s stumbled into the clues to solve the case of the missing groom and finds a corpse as well, proving that planning a wedding can literally be murder. A Christmas Arrangement It's Christmastime in Hillside, but there's a lack of holiday spirit for flower shop owner Quincy McKay. She's in charge of the town festival and her shop's open house, but her Santa's a no-show and her flower cooler is on the fritz. To make matters worse, she's learned her ex-husband isn't as ex as she'd thought. Just when she thought things couldn't get any worse, her boyfriend, hot cop Alex Cooper announces his parents are coming to town. Alex Cooper is the perfect man in Quincy's book, but unfortunately his mother thinks so too. And no woman is perfect enough for her perfect son, but especially not the weird flower shop girl who works too much, can't cook and who she catches kissing another man in the department store. And what's this she hears about Quincy being married? Eleanor Cooper must help her son dodge a bullet (and not the kind from his job) during the romantic holiday season to prevent him from being ensnared in a regrettable relationship. Quincy's dignity (of which lately she's in short supply), her reputation, and every business in town are riding upon the success of the city's Christmas celebration. If she can figure out a way to make it work despite failing equipment, helpers dropping out of the picture as fast as snowflakes in a blizzard, a troubling and inappropriate Secret Santa, and the possibility of arrest, she might win the respect of everyone in the town, but more importantly, Alex's parents. If Alex can survive his loving but meddling mother until Christmas, and keep Quincy safe from her crazy ex-husband, with a little help from the MLM (Mormon Ladies Mafia), and K.C. the she-Santa, he'll arrange for the perfect holiday for himself and the woman who has captured his heart.

By trekker Move over Stephanie Plum there is a new sleuth in town and her name is Quincy. What a great bundle of books. If you are a fan of the Stephanie Plum series you will love this series. The series is full of quirky characters and laugh out loud situations that will make you crave more. Quincy McCay is a woman who takes over her Aunts flower shop after getting out of an abusive marriage. She finds that she now has a strong backbone and will not roll over for anyone again. When Quincy finds herself in the center of a murder investigation she takes it upon herself along with JC to clear her name. These are easy reads for when you need a break from the daily grind and want to put a smile on your face. The flow of the stories are evenly paced with minimal typos. They are clean books for the most part. Quincy does talk about sex or the lack of and the trying to get some in book 2 . But not to the point where I would ban my teen from reading them. With Rambo grandma's, the Mormon ladies group who could give the CIA a run for their money in gathering information on everyone and hunky cops these books won't disappoint.

The town of Soldiers Grove is nestled amongst the driftless hills of southwestern Wisconsin. Its winters are long, its warmer seasons bright and challenging. The population is fewer than 600, including those residing in the senior citizens home. Two of these seniors, Cyril and Louise, have come to live there. Unlikely as it may seem, for they come from very diverse backgrounds, they form a close friendship, and their growing attachment sparks them to adventures and unlikely locations. Ultimately they face frightening circumstances which test them to their limits, while binding and nurturing their growing love for one another.Instead of slipping gracefully away into old age, Cyril and Louise are compelled to protect themselves against a vicious threat when Balaclava, an out-of-town armed sociopath, relentlessly attempts to rob Cyril not only of his life savings but, if necessary, take his life as well. How they ultimately cope with this threat and resolve this crisis has the makings of a first class thriller. This thoughtful, bitter-sweet love story represents and chronicles much about our world and the passage of time in this accomplished work by a prize-winning writer.

The Mysteries of Soldiers Grove, by Paul Zimmer

Review "Poet Zimmer has crafted a superior love story between two senior citizens set in the little town of Soldiers Grove, Wis. One afternoon, nursing home resident Cyril Solverson sneaks out to Burkhum's Tap, where he drinks beer and bores other patrons with his endless biographical trivia. After leaving the bar, he passes a gas station where an armed man he calls Balaclava forces him into the man s pickup. The thug takes Cyril's wallet and releases him into a driving snowstorm miles from town. Back at the home, Cyril, awkward and clueless, sets out to woo a new resident, sophisticated French-born Louise. The pair begins a series of gradually bolder escapes from the facility, until Balaclava's return puts them in peril. Zimmer nails the small intimacies that gradually build the trust, love, and hope between Cyril and Louise, including a remarkable scene in which they share a dance using their canes as props." --Publishers Weekly, starred review"Age is no barrier to dreams, a truth flawlessly illustrated in Paul Zimmer's debut novel. Although this sounds like a convenient setup for what could have been a cutesy-but-light sunset romance, in author Zimmer's hands, The Mysteries of Soldiers Grove becomes a treatise on what matters most in life. Adventure or comfort. Truth or well-crafted lies. Giving or taking. There is terror here, as well as courage and self-sacrifice, and binding them all together is page after page of gorgeous prose. If you appreciate the very finest of American literature, read this book. Gunfire optional." --Mystery Scene Magazine"Humor and dialog draw you into this tale, well past pathos to honest fascination, joy, and hope. The author enters the minds of both his characters convincingly, telling their parallel lives in first person, switching from one to the other with wonderful timing, and blending honest elderly romance with just the right amount of mystery and threat. Old love is indeed "a very, very fine thing," old age is a mystery approaching its own dark finality, and old lives are well worth reading and remembering in this wonderful tale." --Sheila's Reviews

About the Author PAUL ZIMMER has received eight Pushcart Awards for his prose and poetry, and an Award for Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1995 he was given the Open Book Award by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. His book, The Great Bird of Love, was selected for the National Poetry Series by William Stafford. There's wit and wisdom, a gripping plot, and two endearing protagonists whose alternating voices are strong and perfectly suited to their characters. There's also evil personified in the persona of a ruthless sociopath who hunts down and terrorizes the couple who reside in a personal care home in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. Although that's the thriller aspect of this novel, there is so much more to its fabric, mainly in the coming together of two elderly people. One, Cyril, is a man who has been alone all his life, a "talker," who regales people with his recitations of brief biographies of famous and not-so famous persons from every walk of life and historical period. This he calls giving one "a life." Often these lives, sometimes fictionally embellished, echo the wary listener's life in some way, but usually serve only to drive that person away. Cyril has become a town "character," someone to be tolerated, barely, or avoided--until he meets Louise, a recent widow and new resident of the care home, who has had to give up her life of artistic pursuits on a beautiful farm. And so begins what becomes a wonderful love story-thriller concerning two people in the end times. Older readers will love this book for its small and large truths having to do with age, aging, devotion, courage, and love; younger readers will find in those truths a rare window into the hearts of two elders of great humanity and life. Moving, witty and humorous at moments, suspenseful, lyrical--this novel hits on all cylinders. --Joanna Higgins

Roberts "Mysteries of Soldiers' Grove" explores the greater mysteries off love and death in the form of a romance between two people with stories to tell. The novel finds them straining at the limitations of an assisted living facility, and the structure of story, narrated by each of them in turn, shows them to be completely complimentary to each other while at the same time with little in common. Cyril brings to the book a unique personality who has spent his days researching thumbnail biographical sketches of everyone from emperors to baseball players. They are seemingly random until he meets Louise, who seems to understand his curious hobby. She has one bigger story, that of a war bride from France tucked into the Wisconsin countryside and making the most of what could have been a loveless marriage. The author carefully develops their relationship until they are strong enough to put it to the test of a run-in with a serious criminal. The reader finds a very convincing love affair between two memorable characters who seem to get younger as the story unfolds.

Wouldn't it nice if we were to encounter an entirely new experience that we can later sit back and savor. This wonderful book introduces us to two elder citizens and their escapades. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Dark but thrilling passage By k.c. quinn This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone. This is my favorite Rookie Club book so far. Part gritty police procedural, part romantic suspense, plenty of mystery, action and thrills, this one has a little bit of everything. The heroine is a SWAT/Special Operations cop who has new baby that she is raising with the help of her adopted sister after her boyfriend and coworker is killed in an undercover operation. She gets dragged into a human trafficking investigation after she witnesses an astounding cop killing while driving around in the middle of the night to soothe her baby to sleep. What follows is non stop action and the realization that she can't trust anyone. This is such a well written, impeccably plotted, fast paced story that it is impossible to put down once started. Highly recommended.

GREAT BOOK By Jackie Human trafficking, murder, blackmail, kidnapping, rape - all the crimes committed in this action packed thriller. Cameron was a single mother. Her son's father had died while working undercover without knowing he was a father. Baby Nate did not sleep well so Cameron frequently drove around until he fell asleep. On one such night she parked her car so she could feed Nate. She saw a ghost it was Diago Ramirez, Nate's father. He shot another police officer.Cameron was in shock and her troubles were just beginning. She did not know who to trust so she asked for help from two other members of the Rookie Club. Diago managed to give her a thumb drive with information that could bring down the the entire operation. She just needed to live long enough to use it.This book is packed with action and suspense. I could not read fast enough.

A well constructed murder mystery with some interesting characters and even more interesting motives. A bit of a twist keeps you guessing. An easy read with a bit of Cajun favor. There are a couple of opportunities for improvement. The main character's dialogue falls a bit short of the true Cajun cadence. The phrases are there, but it just doesn't carry off the true charm of the character. The second slightly annoying issue may be due to spell check or word correction. There are quite a few words that are similar, but have totally different meanings, so it's kind of a jolt. Otherwise, a pleasant read and a good solid mystery. I would recommend it.

Updated and expanded edition of the foundational text of women of color feminism. Originally released in 1981, This Bridge Called My Back is a testimony to women of color feminism as it emerged in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Through personal essays, criticism, interviews, testimonials, poetry, and visual art, the collection explores, as coeditor Cherríe Moraga writes, “the complex confluence of identities—race, class, gender, and sexuality—systemic to women of color oppression and liberation.” Reissued here, nearly thirty-five years after its inception, the fourth edition contains an extensive new introduction by Moraga, along with a previously unpublished statement by Gloria Anzaldúa. The new edition also includes visual artists whose work was produced during the same period as Bridge, including Betye Saar, Ana Mendieta, and Yolanda López, as well as current contributor biographies. Bridge continues to reflect an evolving definition of feminism, one that can effectively adapt to, and help inform an understanding of the changing economic and social conditions of women of color in the United States and throughout the world. “Immense is my admiration for the ongoing dialogue and discourse on feminism, Indigenous feminism, the defining discussions in women of color movements and the broader movement. I have loved this book for thirty years, and am so pleased we have returned with our stories, words, and attributes to the growing and resilient movement.” — Winona LaDuke (Anishinaabe), Executive Director, Honor the Earth Praise for the Third Edition “This Bridge Called My Back … dispels all doubt about the power of a single text to radically transform the terrain of our theory and practice. Twenty years after its publication, we can now see how it helped to untether the production of knowledge from its disciplinary anchors—and not only in the field of women’s studies. This Bridge has allowed us to define the promise of research on race, gender, class and sexuality as profoundly linked to collaboration and coalition-building. And perhaps most important, it has offered us strategies for transformative political practice that are as valid today as they were two decades ago.” — Angela Davis, University of California, Santa Cruz “This Bridge Called My Back … has served as a significant rallying call for women of color for a generation, and this new edition keeps that call alive at a time when divisions prove ever more stubborn and dangerous. A much-cited text, its influence has been visible and broad both in academia and among activists. We owe much of the sound of our present voices to the brave scholars and feminists whose ideas and ideals crowd its pages.” — Shirley Geok-lin Lim, University of California, Santa Barbara

FREE INDEED is the true story of a woman who for years struggled with a secret pornography addiction. After she was exposed to pornographic material at a young age, curiosity quickly turned into addiction. In a vein similar to Stormie Omartian, Veronica Smith reveals the ins and outs of her pornography addiction: from living in constant fear that her secret would be revealed to believing that pornography was the only way she could be herself. Then she uncovers the rocky road she followed to get the help and guidance she needed to break from the shackles of addiction. FREE INDEED is a candid and compassionate look at the depths pornography addiction can reach—in an addict’s own words. There is an escape from addiction; there are paths other than that of destruction and pornography. Veronica knows this, as she’s lived it. Read her story, and realize that help-if you need it-is there.

It was inspirational to see how she struggled and overcame her pornography addiction. It made me realize that addictions, whether big or small, are real. I commend Veronica for being brave enough to tell her story and how she dealt with it. Free Indeed is a keeper!

I felt that the author was very transparent about her addiction. She had a lot of bible verses that lets you know that no matter what you are going through, God will help see you through it if you just trust and believe. I would highly recommend this book to others. It really touched my life and I know that it will do so for others.

“It was a gift she never wanted, but Riley hoped it would be enough to save him.” From the author of the Bestselling Kate Reid Series, comes a suspenseful novel that will keep you hooked from the very first page! In recent years, Riley Thompson has developed a gift, if anyone would really call it that. The ten year old girl from a small town in Indiana doesn’t understand why she can feel what others feel, or see what others have seen. She only knows the hurt upon looking into the eyes of her mother—the beneficiary of her father’s recent run of bad luck. A streak that has hardened his heart and often finds him drowning in the bottom of a bottle. She tries hard to be just like the other fifth graders, but life at home is hard and the pain is difficult to endure. It isn’t until the day Riley meets Carl Boyd, a Vietnam veteran, that everything changes. Visions of a terrible past, not just from war, but from a life that has stolen much from him, begins to surface in Riley’s mind. But this is far more intense and frightening than anything she has experienced before. Riley discovers her gift is quickly evolving and finds herself swimming in the memories of Carl Boyd, and experiencing a past he can’t put behind him. Even more troubling; perceiving a future of which he doesn’t yet know—a future filled with danger. All are reluctant to come to terms with Riley’s ability, especially her father. But then, he has seen this before.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Terrific read for a stormy day... By C. J. Gerard What a gem of a book! I truly loved this book even though the situations were somewhat dark...that's pretty much real life for a lot of people. It was well-written and I say that because it made me care about the characters, what was happening to them, what had happened to them to bring them together and how everything would play out in the end. Even though it's told from a child's point of view, this is not a children's book. There are things that would be too frightening for a child, (out of control parent, being hunted by criminals, out of control weather, etc.) If you like suspense and well-drawn characters, this is a terrific book and I highly recommend it!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Quick Read...Worth the time By Pamela Minnaugh This was a quick read for me. The main character, Riley, is a likable 10 year old girl, with a very strange "gift". She can sense the feelings of other people. This sense is intensified when she meets a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD. The story makes a full circle by explaining her connection and the need to "help" him. There are times when the story is a bit of a reach, but it holds the readers attention. There are many unlikable characters, including Riley's parents, but the bond between Riley and Carl Boyd Sr (the Veteran) is nicely developed. The sexual content was brief and vague. Overall, I felt it was worth the read.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Absolute Winner! By Dawn O This story has I all! Mystery, danger, sorrow, regret, hope and even a little puppy-love. The characters are spot on and developed nicely. Riley is a six year old force to be reckoned with once she sets her mind to something. The silent hero here could be her brother Dillon or the police officer who, without his belief in Riley, the reality of her gift would not have been accepted. A really great story! Definitely a page turner. Don't pass this one up because you're not quite sure, you won't be sorry! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

My name is Izzy. I drink too much, am clumsier than a newborn foal, and my brain-to-mouth filter often malfunctions. My daredevil husband killed himself in a parachuting accident five years ago and my best friend Jack has decided it’s time I jump back in the dating pool. He’s perfectly happy to throw me in if I don’t listen. Just when things in the dating world start to heat up, my grandma dies. Only her knitting group of Jessica Fletcher wannabes is sure it’s murder. I’m not convinced but I’m always up for a bit of excitement as long as it doesn’t lead to a night in jail. Well, more than one night anyway. Will I miss my chance at love because I’m chasing imaginary killers? Did someone really kill grandma or am I and my merry band of geriatric thieves imagining things?

Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem (The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives Book 1), by D.E. Haggerty

About the Author I was born and raised in Wisconsin, but think I’m a European. After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. My flying Dutch husband and I have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany and now Istanbul. We still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. Although I’ve been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, I think with writing I may have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. That’s assuming I ever grow up, of course. Between tennis, running, traveling, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my fifth book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun Cozy Mystery By Diana's Book Reviews Wow this book was a lot of fun to read. The characters are a hoot!! I love Izzy quirky attitude and the way she thinks, she is strong willed and does what she wants to do. She has her Gay BFF who looks after her, trying to find her the right man. Takes her to speed dating, not something she wants to do. She meets Noel, a police detective and goes on a date, well if you would call it that, embarrassing. You of course will have to read the book to find out what happened. She has a really awesome Grandma, by marriage, her first husband’s Grandma and well Izzy and she got a long great until she dies. Everyone thinks it is a heart attack. Izzy doesn’t fall for that, she knows something is up, but no one believes her. So she starts snooping around with Grandma’s friends to find out what happened.Great story, reads to me like a cozy mystery, if you love cozy mysteries then you will love this book. The characters were fun and interesting. Lots of interesting things happen to Izzy, she has to find out the truth.I did received this book for an honest review from Book Enthusiast Promotions

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Murder,Mystery & Dating Mayhem By petula winmill ★★★★★This book is sure to put a smile on your face. It is so much fun. I liked the fact that it has a heroine slightly older than most books, and her "partners in crime " are pensioners and her B.F.F. who is a super hot gay man.Izzy Archer's best friend drags her out to a speed dating night that quickly turns into a disaster. The next date he sets her up on is even worse. Dating is not something she has any practice with, she married her college sweetheart and he has been her only lover. Izzy adopted her husband's grandmother and still has a wonderful relationship with her, and her friends. With the death of one of their own the ladies are convinced it's murder and will not be stopped from investigating.Add into this mix a sensible and hot detective who is prepared to listen to and protect those involved.A great clean fun read. Now I want to read Jack's story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Must read this hilarious mystery By Jo-Anne B. Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.Oh my goodness! I couldn’t put this one down for a second. Izzy believes her Grandma was murdered but her death was declared a heart attack. Actually, Izzy was not a blood relation to Grandma at all. She 'adopted' Grandma who was her deceased husband's grandmother. Grandma had many friends who all thought she had been murdered and told Izzy of their suspicions. Izzy started looking into the mysterious death along with her best friend, Jack and the elderly ladies. They all wanted to help solve the crime. As all this is going on, Izzy meets Noel through a speed dating event thanks to Jack who thinks she needs to get back into the dating pool. Noel is a detective and keeps telling Izzy to let the police solve the crime. But Izzy cannot let it go. There is no stopping Grandma's posse of friends who will not stop investigating until they find out who killed Grandma. This is a wonderfully written mystery that I couldn't put down. The book is a great read and definitely captures the reader in the story line. I couldn't imagine how a mystery could be funny but it sure can be. You have to read this book and see for yourself. The characters were fantastic! First we have Izzy who is kind of a klutz but is like a dog with a bone and won't let go of something once she starts it. Her hunky, gay, best friend, Jack, always has her back. Then there are the posse of old ladies who believe themselves to be detectives and are sooooo funny. I love them and how they try to help solve the crime. A laugh out loud moment for me was when they were referred to as the Ben-gay brigade.I loved this book! It was hilarious and had me chuckling constantly.

Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas. But something goes terribly wrong on their way home, and the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever.

A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor—labeled the “Tally Man” by a fascinated media—lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away.

With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath, and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

The One That Got Away, by Simon Wood

Review

“Simon Wood’s The One That Got Away turns the serial killer convention upside down in a genuinely suspenseful novel.” —Charlaine Harris, author of The Day Shift

"Simon Wood's dark, suspenseful thriller is a winner. Zoe Sutton is one of the most compelling, interesting, and complex heroines I've read in a long time. Wood is a master at ratcheting up the suspense—he starts strong on page one, and doesn't let up until the final sentence. Wood is at the top of his game with The One That Got Away." —Allison Brennan, New York Times bestselling author of Notorious

"Wrenchingly intense—the talented Simon Wood goes psychologically dark and deeply disturbing. For those who like their thrillers twisty, shocking, and relentless." —Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, and Mary Higgins Clark award-winning author of Truth Be Told

"Marvelously nerve-racking, The One That Got Away is a wicked roller-coaster of suspense that paints a realistic picture of a serial murderer and Zoë Sutton, the one prey that got away. You won’t want to sleep once you start reading." —Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author of The Assassins and The Book of Spies

Another great Simon Wood thriller By Desert Rat As soon as as I saw a novel by Simon Wood as one of the selections for the Kindle First for February, I snapped it up and began reading. My first introduction to Simon's writing was his novel "Accidents Waiting to Happen." I liked it so much, I bought and read "Paying the Piper." I liked that book so well, I bought 3 more of his novels. That is rare for me. Rarely do I own more than 2 novels by the same author, especially Indie authors. The One That Got Away is one of Simon's greater works. He keeps getting better. Great writing style, quick pace, interesting story that you can't put down. The hardest part was getting through the first chapter, not because there was anything wrong but because of the spoilers that I had read before buying the book.So.... no spoilers... no additional comments about the story..... Just this. Get the book. You won't be disappointed.FYI. I am not a writer or a reviewer. I am just a 60-year-old woman who likes to read good books.

She had been an outgoing, fun young woman on a path to a PhD and a career in environmental science. She became a loner - an aloof mall cop with very little human contact. She thought she was moving on. She thought she was dealing. One quick news report changed her mind right away. This book is the story of Zoe's experiences, and how she dealt with the reappearance of someone who nearly killed her. It was exciting, fast paced, and riveting. Zoe's behavior was very well written and was a believable portrait of PTSD. The unfolding of the story was executed with great precision. Every time I felt like I had a handle on what was going on, the author revealed something new. There was a little bit of bad language, but it was for the most part clean. There was no sex, but there was sorta graphic description of a very specific type of torture. It wasn't really bad, but younger or more sensitive readers might be unnerved. There was a good bit of recreational drunkenness, but in all honesty the aftermath of each of those was so bad, they actually serve as a warning against drunkenness.Overall, highly recommended for ages 15 and up.

84 of 92 people found the following review helpful. Well written basic serial killer story By JZS I started "The One That Got Away" with a pretty bad attitude. Looking at the samples of the four Kindle First selections at 2:30 AM. Nothing looked appealing and I decided I would just skip this month. But a couple of hours later I knew it would drive me crazy not to round out a solid year of reading a kindle first selection so I picked this as probably the best of a bad lot. Turned out to be a good choice.Given the mood I was in, if there were any major flaws in TOTGA, I would have been all over them. The worst thing I can say about it is that is formulaic. But it's a serial killer story. I haven't found any that are truly different and those that try usually resort to "shock value" using extremes in gruesome detail to set themselves apart. "The One That Got Away" is violent, of course, but it is well written with the right amount of detail and suspense. The characters are pretty much the stock characters that you find in stories of this type- basically decent, if a little flat. The heroine didn't do anything ridiculously stupid and the police didn't overlook a glaring clue (that is the kind of thing that ruins a book for me). Actually this reminded me a lot of a previous Kindle First selection, "My Sister's Grave". I think I actually liked this one slightly more- it is shorter and so much faster paced with less "down time".Looking back, it appears that I am "damning with faint praise" and that isn't my intention. If you like serial killer thrillers, you will probably enjoy this. It is a fast paced quick read - with breaks for walking the dogs, etc it took me under four hours to read it.

I have only read one or two of Ms. Scottoline's books over thirty years and now I remember why.Unlike some other reviewers, I have no complaint with the basis of the story. Arguing that the author shouldn't have employed a hit and run because other books have also is like saying "Huckleberry Finn" should have used a less utilized metaphor than a river. It's not the facts, it's what the author does with them.I believe that many parents would have let their children drive on an empty road. I believe that many parents' first instinct would have been to lie to protect a child. After that, I stopped believing. There was no circumstance under which a character whom we would ever care about again would leave that young woman behind and allow his son to watch that happen.Lie upon lie upon lie. Stupidity upon stupidity upon stupidity. Clearly, we are meant to feel for the bundle of whiny neuroses which is Jake, and to try to understand how his self-pity justifies the torture to which he subjects his son Ryan, the only character in the novel with any sort of moral compass. And Pam is awful--smug, smarmy, sanctimonious and a pedantic pain in the butt. I had forgotten Scottoline's annoying habit of abruptly stopping action to have a character explain a finer point of the law as though the reader were sitting in Con Law I. That Pam's ego is so enlarged that she would put her son and husband through an FBI investigation without even pausing to consider the strain on them is overshadowed only by her ludicrous position that letting your kid drive on a learner's permit is somehow a greater transgression than sleeping with your son's coach, lying about it, and carelessly allowing your son to find out about it.The only way anybody was going to escape intact in this book was if the poor victim was already dead when Ryan ran over her, so it was clear from the second chapter that that would happen. Pam's oversharing with and sycophancy toward Dr. Dave makes Jake the only poor fool who doesn't know his wife is cheating on him. Only a genuine suspension of disbelief allows the possibility that anyone would WANT to sleep with her (does she ever shut up?), particularly once you learn that Dr. Dave is a pedophile and Pam would be out of his age range.Nothing in this book rings true, although I really liked the dog. Unfortunately, he couldn't carry the whe story alone. Poor guy--stuck with these people.

Completely unbelievable characters By DSG100 I will take great care to write this without spoilers although after you read this review you may not want to read the book anyway. The characters and the dialogues in this book are in no way believable or realistic. The first night we meet Pam who is a know-it-all nag who continues to harp on her husband even after he says he doesn't want to talk. She goes on and on and preaches and lectures and you just want to smack her. Her character doesn't get any better and it is absolutely unclear why her husband Jake cherishes his marriage. The conversation with the son Ryan's coach at the bathroom at a basketball game is absolutely ridiculous. No coach would take time away from a game to say such stupid things to a dad, and no dad would take it. After every conversation I found myself wondering, "Who SAYS that?!" Also frustrating is the way Jake won't talk to his employees when they need him.. I guess we're supposed to think he's so stressed he can't work anymore but all I could think of was "Get a grip, man!" I stuck with it, saw the plot twist coming a mile away, and when I put it down my only thought was, "I'm glad that's over."

A powerful ending By Deana I received a copy of this book from LibraryThing for an honest reviewThey were able to safely rescue Nancy and transport her to the hospital. Mary is so upset about friends as she sees her laying there with bruises, knowing that the emotional scars were there., She blames herself for the damage done to her friend as the guilt starts to overwhelm her., Thom and Mary have learned to trust each now and soon they find themselves being intimate. Their bond is strong and they are slowly letting go and learning to trust each other. The kidnapper has been identified as Adam Fielding. What has caused this breakdown mentally for Adam? His violent tendencies seem to be growing and his need to have someone is causing him not to feel , just accomplish his goal .The plan is to use Mary as bait to lure Adam to once again try to kidnap her? Why is he attracted to nurturing caring women? Is his mom still alive? At this point in the story it becomes so intense that you feel your heart pounding as you read the words. The author has done a great job of giving us an ending so explosive and powerful that you find yourself totally on the edge of your seat. I could not read fast enough it seemed to get to end.The ending is everything you want in a suspenseful book: women are being kidnapped and tortured , the police have a dramatic and daring encounter with the kidnapper and Mary is trying to keep herself together so she can help this msn get caught.I loved every moment of this book and thought the author did a tremendous job in holding the readers attention end the book did not lack action, mystery and and ending that was powerful I cheered as the last word was read.

The kidnapper is after Mary as he knows that she has someone protecting her. He has been able to get away from the police. They were able to get the latest victim safe and Mary knows that she needs to help to catch him. Thom doesn't want to use her as bait but this is the only way.The kidnapper catches them off guard and he wants Mary to pay as she broke her promise. Will she be safe or will Thom be too late.

Impasse: A Novel, by Royce Scott Buckingham

Review "Just finished reading 'Impasse'. Excellent. My preference is for mystery/thriller genre in which the protagonist discovers unused/unknown strengths. I hope for more along the lines of Impasse." - Tony, New Fan

“A tale of betrayal and revenge, Impasse has been rightfully compared to The Count of Monte Cristo, as it deals with the themes of transformation and vengeance. Impasse also has an enjoyable streak of black comedy. Buckingham brings a generous amount of humor to the table, making Stu a likable, if hapless, everyman. What's fascinating about the story and about the character is that despite every Jack London, "To Build a Fire"-type moment Stu endures in the wilderness, he continues to lack the killer instinct he ultimately needs to triumph. It's the journey to discover and unleash that instinct inside him that drives Impasse, and leads to its most satisfying moments.” ―MYSTERYSCENEMAG.COM on IMPASSE

“[A] heart-pounding modern legal thriller of survival – action packed suspense with humor, adventure, betrayal, and delicious sweet revenge...Wow, what a ride!” ―Judith Collins Must Read Books

“Buckingham spins an equally tense but thoroughly modern thriller of survival and revenge in which a man is forced to confront both deadly peril in the wild and a sadistic manipulator and unfaithful wife at home. Highly recommended for those who enjoy men's adventure tales.” ―Library Journal

“A fun, energetic thrill-ride…a modern take on The Count of Monte Cristo.” ―Jeff Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Adrenaline

“Buckingham keeps readers' pulses pounding.” ―Kirkus Reviews on The Dead Boys

“Buckingham has written an enjoyable novel that is both scary and laugh-out-loud funny…. Fast-paced and full of action and suspense.” ―School Library Journal on Demonkeeper

“Thrilling, terrifying--and funny.” ―Tacoma News Tribune on Demonkeeper

North to Alaska, survival not guaranteed By Barbara McLovich Other than graphic sexual scenes, which one could certainly visualize, and graphic violence, pertaining to animals being captured in the wild of Alaska, I found this story-line to be quite entertaining. Stu Stark, man of the world, suddenly finds himself out of a job after losing a prominent court case. He and an old friend, Clay, start their own law practice and, again, things spiral out of control. Clay, being the so-called "nice friend", gifts Stu with a vacation to Alaska for his 40th birthday, laying it on thick with a promise of a wonderful cabin awaiting him, etc. Clay then backs out of the trip, leaving Stu to fly to Alaska on his own. Things rapidly fall apart with Stu's arrival in a desolate Alaskan wilderness. No cabin, no food, no transportation, no nothing. Stu has been conned by Clay, who in turn is betting that Stu will eventually fall prey to the Alaskan wilderness. Six months pass and Stu, suddenly smarter, stronger and being a survivor in Alaska with the much needed help of a grizzled trapper, Blake, makes his way back to Massachusetts with revenge on his mind. A good story, with some laughing points thrown in. Stu certainly turns out to be a survivor, after all. A nice cast of characters from good guys to bad guys, including a good lady-friend attorney and not-so-good wife.

Impasse By S Riaz Stuart Stark is a Massachusetts lawyer, who finds that his career has stalled after he is sacked from the DA’s office, after a case which he should have made his reputation. Although he helps convict Raymond Butz for murdering his wife, he is warned against a case where there is no body and, indeed, Butz later walks free from jail – causing the DA embarrassment and costing Stark his job.Stark finds himself in low-rent premises, in private practice with the gregarious Clayton Buchanan. Clayton and Stark’s wife, Katherine, are hoping that a personal injury case will help their luck turn. Both Stark’s wife and his business partner are selfish, money obsessed and see Stark as rule abiding – the nice guy who never makes it to the top. Katherine is resentful that their income no longer matches her intended lifestyle and Clayton uses her ambition for wealth to help him bring in richer clients. When Stark reaches forty, Clayton buys him a surprise present – a trip staying in a remote cabin in Alaska. Stark is not keen, especially not when Clayton drops out from the week of hunting and adventure at the very last moment. Dropped off in the wilderness, Stark finds that the trip is even more dangerous than he thought – there is no cabin and nobody comes back to collect him…This is, of course, a modern day re-working of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and the author creates a thrilling and exciting adventure. A modern day lawyer left to die in the wilderness, who survives against all the odds and returns to wreak revenge. The events of this novel will change Stuart Stark from a mild mannered husband and lawyer, who always does his best for his clients – even against his own interests – to a man forced to face the fact that he was left for dead by the people he cared about and who he thought cared for him. This book never lets up the pace and is a very exciting and enjoyable thriller. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
