Lacey Flint, Sharon Bolton's enigmatic protagonist, has been living in a houseboat on the River Thames, and she's becoming a part of London's weird and wonderful riverboat community. Against her friends' better judgment, she's taken up swimming in the Thames, and she feels closer than ever to Detective Mark Joesbury, despite his involvement in a complicated undercover case. For the first time in her life, as she recovers from the trauma of the last few months, Lacey begins to feel almost happy.
Then, at dawn one hot summer morning while swimming down the river, Lacey finds the body of a shrouded young woman in the water. She assumes it was chance―after all, she's recently joined the marine policing unit, and she knows how many dead bodies are pulled out of the river every year, most the result of tragic accidents. But further investigation leads her policing team to suspect the woman's body was deliberately left for Lacey to find. Lacey's no longer a homicide detective, but as she begins to notice someone keeping a strangely close eye on her, she's inexorably drawn into the investigation.
Award-winning author Sharon Bolton has once again crafted a tightly plotted, utterly unpredictable thriller around one of the most compelling characters in crime fiction today, intensely private London police officer Lacey Flint, whose penchant for keeping secrets is only matched by her determination to uncover those of others.

From Booklist Still unsettled by her experiences as a detective constable, quick-witted Lacey Flint, last seen in Lost (2013), returns to work, she’s now assigned to London’s river police. While swimming in the Thames, she comes across the bloated corpse of young woman, wrapped in linen, who turns out to be from a particular region of Afghanistan, which leads Lacey to recall her rescue of another young woman, from the same region, who was smuggled into London some months before. Lacey soon finds herself working alongside her old detective colleagues, her willful disregard for procedure driving her superior nuts. Thanks to Lacey, more bodies are recovered from the Thames, and Lacey once again lands in the middle of a particularly baffling mystery. The obstinate yet emotionally vulnerable Lacey, who made her first appearance in Now You See Me (2011), remains a strong character, but this time her fans will need a bit of patience to negotiate the plethora of sometimes confusing twists and turns. --Stephanie Zvirin
Review
“The pleasures of first-rate mystery usually lie in the plot, and Bolton has constructed a solid nail-biter. But it's the characters that infuse A Dark and Twisted Tide with such heart--not just the gritty, damaged Flint but her friends and colleagues, too.” ―Entertainment Weekly
“[Bolton] delights in a kind of gothic horror, weaving suspenseful tales featuring complex, often tormented characters…Just as readers think they know the killer's identity, there is another shocking twist in this…always gripping tale by a master of the genre.” ―Library Journal
“[Bolton's] worldbuilding is fascinating. Lacey is a wonderful protagonist, stubborn, lost and striving to connect.” ―RT Book Reviews (4 stars)

Best Lacey so far By Sophie Sharon Bolton is such an intelligent writer and I always know, the moment I pick up one of her Lacey Flint books, nothing will be important until I’ve finished it. A Dark and Twisted Tide was another fantastic novel from an author who can do no wrong in my eyes. The suspense and mystery was gripping and I think this is probably the best Lacey book so far for me.So, Lacey, living on her boat, has become a bit of a fan of swimming in the Thames. That is, of course, until the moment she finds a body floating in there. I’ve always quite fancied staying on a boat – thought it would be nice, peaceful and serene. Safe to say, I’m never stepping near another boat again! It makes me shudder just thinking about it. As the plot unfolds, it becomes more chilling, more unnerving and more disturbing yet brilliant as you realise you’re reading Bolton at her best. The twists were executed wonderfully and I was in suspense right from the beginning. As the story went back and forth, my attention was stole and I was drawn into the investigation, the perfect setting and the even-more developed, great character of Lacey. Lacey is probably my favourite book character in any series but I loved her even more in A Dark and Twisted Tide. Bolton’s character development is flawless and there was a whole host of intriguing characters in this book, as well of the return of brilliant names from past series too like Dana and the fantastic Joesbury. There is just so much excellence poured into this book, it’s impossible for me to not recommend this to you!A Dark and Twisted Tide was spine-tingling, all-consuming and so, so good. I feel like I’ve been at the Thames myself, pulled through twist after twist with no clue where it was going to go next. Bolton’s writing can get no better (although remind me of that when I tell you otherwise in the next book) – A Dark and Twisted Tide is very spooky and completely stunning.5/5.*Book gifted for honest review.

Branfield In A Dark and Twisted Tide, Sharon Bolton’s newest addition to the Lacey Flint series, the River Thames is an intriguing and unique setting for a murder investigation. Ex-homicide detective Lacey Flint not only lives on the Thames, but as a member of the Marine Unit, she also works there as well. After she discovers the shrouded remains of a young woman, the subsequent investigation reveals an eerie similarity to previously recovered remains. With her curiosity piqued by the body she discovered, Lacey tries to remain on the periphery of the ensuing investigation. However, it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to draw her attention to the unnoticed deaths. Unexplained gifts, glimpses of a mysterious swimmer and the blatant display of the latest victim make it obvious that someone wants Lacey involved in the case. So Lacey, along with DCI Dana Tulloch, keep digging for any possible connection between the victims, but fitting together the pieces of this perplexing mystery is virtually impossible.Lacey is still the fascinating, if somewhat mysterious, heroine that she has always been. She has carved out a quiet life on the Thames and she has become friends with a few of her neighbors, but she still closely guards her secrets. Lacey’s romance with fellow detective Mark Joesbury is hindered by his current case which takes him deep undercover, but they do make a little progress during his quick, but meaningful, visits. Her uneasy professional relationship with Dana Tulloch becomes less rocky and they actually work well together once their investigation begins to produce results. The mystery element of A Dark and Twisted Tide is full of unexpected twists and turns and easily keeps the reader guessing the killer’s identity for much of the novel. While I had a good idea that some of the secondary characters were somehow involved in the unfolding story, I could not figure out how or why. The chapters shift between different viewpoints and while interesting, there is little context to fit these different perspectives into the investigation. The pacing is a little slow until the last quarter of the novel and then it rushes at a breakneck speed to a dramatic and very surprising conclusion.A Dark and Twisted Tide is another superb installment in Sharon Bolton’s Lacey Flint series and although it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend the entire seriesI received a complimentary copy for review.

By FictionFan After her recent experiences, Lacey has stepped back from her role as a detective and joined the Met's Marine Unit, patrolling the Thames. She's also moved to live on a houseboat moored in Deptford Creek and taken up the highly dangerous sport of river-swimming. And it's when she's out swimming alone one early morning that she finds the first body...This is another excellent entry in the Lacey Flint series, with all the regulars back in fine form. Mark Joesbury (sigh!) is off on an undercover mission but we know he won't be able to stay away from Lacey for long. Dana's long-distance relationship with Helen is still continuing, and Dana is becoming desperate to have a child. And Lacey, although still suffering the after-effects of her last couple of cases, is continuing to move towards a more normal existence - she's just about ready to finally accept that there may be a life for her with Mark.I'd suggest that although at a push this book could work as a standalone, it would be much better to read the series in order starting with Now You See Me. The crime story works fine on its own, but the characters develop and grow so much throughout these books that a new reader coming in in the middle might be left a bit puzzled as to the dynamics amongst the members of the team.Normally Bolton's plotting is one of her major strengths but, to be honest, I didn't think the plot of this one was quite up to her usual standard. It relied a bit too much on coincidence and stretched credulity a little too often and, more than that, I felt the main points of the solution were too easy to work out fairly early on. I also found myself questioning how often we can believe that a killer will specifically target Lacey. However, one of Bolton's slightly less good plots is still about twenty times better than most people's best, and what it perhaps lacked in tension was made up for by the brilliant descriptions of the Thames and the people who live and work on it. There are some of Bolton's trademark creepy moments that set my spine nicely a-tingle - I was never a huge fan of crabs but oooh! Well! They may figure in my nightmares for a while now...The story is hard-hitting but as always Bolton manages to tell it without gratuitously-described violence or excessive foul language; and, though the murder victims are young women, Bolton is far too talented and original to rely on tedious scenes of sexual humiliation and torture to harrow her reader's soul. Lacey is a bit of a maverick, but thankfully not a drunken one, and more and more we see her trying to conform to rules and procedures. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this series has been watching Lacey's gradual transformation from weird loner to valued team-member - she's not completely there yet, but she's getting close. And the fact that she's changed so much and yet remained completely credible is a testament to Bolton's skill in characterisation.By a tiny margin, not the best in the series perhaps, but still one of the best books I've read or expect to read this year - highly recommended.NB This book was provided for review by the publisher, Random House Transworld.
