Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas. But something goes terribly wrong on their way home, and the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever.

A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor—labeled the “Tally Man” by a fascinated media—lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away.

With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath, and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

Review

“Simon Wood’s The One That Got Away turns the serial killer convention upside down in a genuinely suspenseful novel.” —Charlaine Harris, author of The Day Shift

"Simon Wood's dark, suspenseful thriller is a winner. Zoe Sutton is one of the most compelling, interesting, and complex heroines I've read in a long time. Wood is a master at ratcheting up the suspense—he starts strong on page one, and doesn't let up until the final sentence. Wood is at the top of his game with The One That Got Away." —Allison Brennan, New York Times bestselling author of Notorious

"Wrenchingly intense—the talented Simon Wood goes psychologically dark and deeply disturbing. For those who like their thrillers twisty, shocking, and relentless." —Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, and Mary Higgins Clark award-winning author of Truth Be Told

"Marvelously nerve-racking, The One That Got Away is a wicked roller-coaster of suspense that paints a realistic picture of a serial murderer and Zoë Sutton, the one prey that got away. You won’t want to sleep once you start reading." —Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author of The Assassins and The Book of Spies

Another great Simon Wood thriller By Desert Rat As soon as as I saw a novel by Simon Wood as one of the selections for the Kindle First for February, I snapped it up and began reading. My first introduction to Simon's writing was his novel "Accidents Waiting to Happen." I liked it so much, I bought and read "Paying the Piper." I liked that book so well, I bought 3 more of his novels. That is rare for me. Rarely do I own more than 2 novels by the same author, especially Indie authors. The One That Got Away is one of Simon's greater works. He keeps getting better. Great writing style, quick pace, interesting story that you can't put down. The hardest part was getting through the first chapter, not because there was anything wrong but because of the spoilers that I had read before buying the book.So.... no spoilers... no additional comments about the story..... Just this. Get the book. You won't be disappointed.FYI. I am not a writer or a reviewer. I am just a 60-year-old woman who likes to read good books.

She had been an outgoing, fun young woman on a path to a PhD and a career in environmental science. She became a loner - an aloof mall cop with very little human contact. She thought she was moving on. She thought she was dealing. One quick news report changed her mind right away. This book is the story of Zoe's experiences, and how she dealt with the reappearance of someone who nearly killed her. It was exciting, fast paced, and riveting. Zoe's behavior was very well written and was a believable portrait of PTSD. The unfolding of the story was executed with great precision. Every time I felt like I had a handle on what was going on, the author revealed something new. There was a little bit of bad language, but it was for the most part clean. There was no sex, but there was sorta graphic description of a very specific type of torture. It wasn't really bad, but younger or more sensitive readers might be unnerved. There was a good bit of recreational drunkenness, but in all honesty the aftermath of each of those was so bad, they actually serve as a warning against drunkenness.Overall, highly recommended for ages 15 and up.

Looking at the samples of the four Kindle First selections at 2:30 AM. Nothing looked appealing and I decided I would just skip this month. But a couple of hours later I knew it would drive me crazy not to round out a solid year of reading a kindle first selection so I picked this as probably the best of a bad lot. Turned out to be a good choice.Given the mood I was in, if there were any major flaws in TOTGA, I would have been all over them. The worst thing I can say about it is that is formulaic. But it's a serial killer story. I haven't found any that are truly different and those that try usually resort to "shock value" using extremes in gruesome detail to set themselves apart. "The One That Got Away" is violent, of course, but it is well written with the right amount of detail and suspense. The characters are pretty much the stock characters that you find in stories of this type- basically decent, if a little flat. The heroine didn't do anything ridiculously stupid and the police didn't overlook a glaring clue (that is the kind of thing that ruins a book for me). Actually this reminded me a lot of a previous Kindle First selection, "My Sister's Grave". I think I actually liked this one slightly more- it is shorter and so much faster paced with less "down time".Looking back, it appears that I am "damning with faint praise" and that isn't my intention. If you like serial killer thrillers, you will probably enjoy this. It is a fast paced quick read - with breaks for walking the dogs, etc it took me under four hours to read it.
