Garrett and Tiffanie Bate had it all—youth, money, and a perfect marriage. Until Tiffanie is killed in a suspicious accident. Neither the police nor the insurance investigators can prove she was murdered and the case turns cold. Two years later the insurance company asks an intern—former college professor turned private eye Ray Courage—to reopen the investigation. He uncovers little new evidence to support suspicions that Garrett killed his wife for the insurance money. Garrett has the perfect alibi—hundreds of witnesses that place him more than two hours from the scene of Tiffanie’s death. Ray knows he’s missing something. But what? As his search for the truth unfolds, Ray’s life is put in jeopardy and he realizes his adversary is someone who’ll kill before he’ll be caught. In this prequel to Courage Matters, Ray Courage begins his private investigation career, displaying the skills, abilities and sense of humor that have made him a fan favorite around the world.

By Christine Terrell I had a day of nothing to read while awaiting a group read to start and was lucky enough to find this 76-page novella as a free read on Amazon. I was in the mood for a short whodunit and this story fit the bill perfectly.Ray Courage was a college professor who became bored with his job. He felt his skills suited him for a job as an investigator so he took a deep breath, quit his scholarly career and went for it. As we meet Ray, he is 52 years old and is starting an investigator internship with an insurance company. He is given a cold case of a woman killed 20 years previously. It is suspected that her husband killed her for the insurance money, but evidence could never be found to prove it. Can Ray actually crack a case that stumped multiple detectives? There are several things I liked about Courage Begins. Scott Mackey, the author, has come up with a good little plot. Though his writing is efficient, he does take the time to create atmosphere in most of his scenes and to give us a glimpse into Ray’s personal life. I found Ray to be endearing and a “regular guy”. The book is laced with subtle humor, which I found amusing. The pace is excellent.Though Courage Begins is the first installment of the Ray Courage Mystery series, it is definitely a stand-alone with no loose ends left hanging. I must say I look forward to seeing more of this older rookie investigator and have already downloaded the next book, Courage Matters, a full-length novel. There is a third book available and another in the pipeline. Anyone looking for a fast yet entertaining mystery will find it in Courage Begins. Definitely recommended.

More Twists Than A Bag of Eels By Chloe The essence of a good thriller are plot twists you do not expect and plot twists you anticipate but twist in the opposite direction that you had first thought. That is Scott Mackey's speciality. He showed his fans this in Courage Matters and twists the trip wire another few degrees in Courage Begins, the eponymous hero Ray Courage cruising the streets of Sacramento investigating an insurance fraud that may have seen the killer go free with a fistful of dollars.Tiffanie Bate is young, sexy, beautiful and married to Garrett. They are the perfect couple. When Tiffanie is found dead, the finger points initially at Garrett. But he has an iron clad alibi: he was a couple of hours away from the murder scene witnessed by hundreds of people. Garrett takes the insurance check and the police investigation goes stone cold.Ray Courage, private eye, ex-college prof with dry humour and a bit of a swagger, is commissioned to reopen the case and, with his usual bluff self-confidence uncovers some new evidence like a handful of seeds he plants and grows into a case that reaches out in the direction of Garrett Bate, a slick operator used to getting his own way and prepared to go to any extreme to make sure he does. Even murder.Mackey piles on the pressure, the plot twists like the helix chronicling our DNA and we come away breathless and ready to hit that buy button and get the next Ray Courage mystery.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Decent Sacramento mystery By col2910 Courage Begins is an 85 page novella from new-to-me author R. Scott Mackey. The author’s debut novel Courage Matters sits after this in his Ray Courage series.I enjoyed this introduction to a new investigator. We had some sense of his character and background revealed to us during our case and there was enough there to encourage me to want to read more about him. The Sacramento setting also appealed to me.We had a decent plot here and I was interested to see how our former college professor unravelled it when more experienced investigators had failed before him. Garrett Bate was cocky, confident and pretty sure he was home free after the suspicious death of his wife a couple of years previously. He was also over a million dollars richer. Courage starts off sedately enough, poking around, innocently asking questions. A mention of something maybe halfway through or a bit beyond, set an alarm bell ringing in my head and whilst I was correct, the author added a twist which I hadn’t seen coming.Overall, entertaining without being the best book ever, but I was satisfied and as a result intend to get to Courage Matters sometime soon. Courage Resurrected follows-on after that.4 from 5Review copy received from the author.

How to Tell if a Man Wants You for a Lifetime or Only for the Moment

Men don’t really have “commitment issues.” At least, not in the way most women think men do. When a man tells you he has “commitment issues”, there’s a good chance that what he REALLY means is he’s not that interested in you and is just using you to pass time with until he meets someone "better." When a man isn’t interested in a relationship with you, his “commitment issues” are nothing more than an excuse to waste your time and reap the benefits of your decision to stay with him in order to “see where this thing goes.” It’s at this point where many women make one of the worse dating decisions possible, as they choose to remain with a half-interested man, hoping that over time they’ll be able to “lull” him into a serious commitment.

The Biggest Reason Why Men Pull Away and Suddenly Lose Interest

Women often wonder why men pull away and lose interest in a blossoming romance without so much as a warning. Though there could be a ton of reasons why a man might pull away, the most common reason for his loss of interest is this: he wasn’t THAT interested in you to begin with. In general, even though men are more than able to commit to a woman once certain conditions in their life are met, they will not directly inform you when you’re not the right girl for them or that now isn’t the right time for them to take a woman seriously. And because men are far more opportunistic when it comes to dating, a lot of guys won’t hesitate to take advantage of a dating situation that reaps high rewards (good for him) with as little effort possible (bad for you).

How to Avoid Dating Men Who Will Keep You Unloved and Perpetually Unclaimed

No matter which way you look at it, even though men don’t really have commitment issues, they don’t find it necessary or in their best interest to inform a woman when she’s nothing more than a beautiful distraction, a way to earn the respect of his peers, or just a target to sharpen his seduction skills so that he’ll be primed and ready when a “better” woman comes along. This is the ugly truth, but there’s hope. In this book, you’ll get an inside look at how a man thinks and interacts with a woman when he’s not that interested in her. This sort of male behavior is actually easy to spot IF you know what to look for. It’s extremely difficult for a man to waste your time and treat you like a short-term plaything without exhibiting certain unmistakable behaviors that clearly communicate that he’s trying to keep you interested…but unclaimed. Here's what you're going to learn inside:
  • The seductive language men use when they want to discourage you from wanting a COMMITTED relationship.
  • How quickly learning this ONE thing about him can tell you if he’s “unequipped” to handle a serious relationship.
  • The pattern in a man’s dating history that IMMEDIATELY reveals if he’s a commitment-phobic time waster.
  • How to avoid being confused by men who might love you tenderly, but would NEVER make you their girlfriend.
  • How to stop losing sleep wondering “DOES HE LIKE ME?” and get him to either take you seriously or take a hike!
  • How observing this simple behavior reveals if he thinks you’re “THE ONE” or just “Some One” to pass time with until he finds his Ms. Right.
  • The relationship red flags for recognizing a DEAD ON ARRIVAL romance so you don’t end up wasting your time.
  • How to tell if a man is still secretly IN LOVE with his ex and is only one sad love song away from abandoning YOU for HER.
  • And much, much more...

All women should read this book. At least now even though I am in my 30s I can move forward in my life with this valuable information and prevent a lot of accidental suffering. My suffering was all self inflicted through ignorance. Please read this book and recommend it to others because I lived through some of these scenarios and the way I grew up I did not have guidance nor tools to face men. This author is like the father who helps his daughter navigate the world rather than fear it. I am thankful for his voice.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. REALLY good book By Globetrotter5K I really appreciate this information and insight shared in this book. I am in my early thirties and have very little experience dating. I was always into my education, sports, traveling and my career and was discouraged as a teenager from dating ( not neccessarily a bad thing). I came close to falling in love once in my entire life and all my experience I've had has pretty much been with the same guy.I found myself nodding in agreement to a lot of what was discussed in this book. I dot want to waste anymore time with a guy who doesn't know what he wants me/or is just using me.The message was very matter of fact and straight forward and not at all cynical or depreciating. I have a greater understanding of what my situation is and will do whatever it takes to put and end to the undesired position I'm in using prayer, meditation, and the knowledge I gained from this book.

Twisted Bloodlines (Volume 1), by Linda Jackson

About the Author I was born and raised in London, which is where I still live now with my husband and children. As a child I always had my nose stuck in a book. I started out reading mysteries such as Nancy Drew and then soon moving onto Agatha Christie. I then found a love of the horror genre, Richard Laymon being my favourite author among a few others. When a friend introduced me to the paranormal romance/fantasy genre I soon became hooked, building myself a very impressive to read pile and a long list of favourite authors. I would say both of these genres have influenced in the way I write and combining them is where I came up with the idea for my book.

Megan's life has been full of challenges, life threatening challenges that would have broken most but some how she stays strong. Maybe because she has Jase for a brother. Jase is the best brother ever. Maybe a bit overprotective at times, most of the time. But we could all use a brother like him at some point and time in our lives. This book caught my interest because I love shifters. Megan has two guys who want her attention but there are times she is to blind to see it. There is a lot of violence in this book that does seem to repeat itself throughout the book, it's for a mature audience. If you like shifters I think you will like this book.

By Amber Oh If you enjoy this first book I know you will become easily addicted to the rest. This is one amazing author.Such a well thought out plot that plays out so fast you dont even realize how far you are in the book. This is a must read for anyone who likes fantasy, shape shifter novels, or were books. It spins this fantastical world full of mystery making you wonder what will happen next to these characters.Meg is such a tortured girl that turns into such a lovely and strong woman, when you concider all of the trauma she has gone through in her life.Trey the neighbor is so utterly confusing. Most of the time I want to slap him upside the head. Then there is Blake oh my im pretty sure when i read about his bad boy character with dark hair who rides a motorcyle I drooled ALOT. hahaBut Blake is so obnoxious and mean to Meg at first that I also want to beat him up.All and all this is a must read book.5 stars

Linda made you laugh and cry her characters were so well written. They were well rounded and they were, as all people are, perfectly imperfect. You hated and loved the fact that the end of the book arrived. I look forward to reading more by her. I highly recommend this book and author!

The Complex, Prelude: The Patient (The Complex (Serial Novel) Book 1), by K. Michael

From the Author Thank You Readers! The Patient was originally published as a free (very) short story, and has received many mixed reviews since it's initial release, most from those who needed an ending. I would like to assure everyone that there is an ending. The Patient has now been officially re-released as a prelude to The Complex, a novel that may have never been born if The Patient hadn't been published. For fun, I'm releasing it as a serial-novel, and Part One: The Observationalist will be available June 19th, here on Amazon. In this Serial Edition of The Patient, I've included an excerpt from the The Observationalist, which will be a much bigger portion of the story. For now, go ahead and check out The Patient. No, it doesn't have an ending. It's just enough to give you a taste of my style and the setting in The Complex. I hope you all enjoy and read on through Part One when it releases.Happy reading- K.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. To describe this book as "unsettling" would be an understatement By Charity Ok, well that was super creepy and disturbing (and I mean that in the best possible way!)"The Patient" by K. Michael is a short (9 page) introduction to an upcoming book series. This short narrative describes an unfortunate man (we never learn his name) as he wakes up strapped to a hospital bed with a very unsettlingly large needle in his arm (pumping him full of who knows what and for what purpose)! The man cannot remember what happened to him and attempts to free himself before his unknown captors come back. The ending was truly unsettling and will have readers anxious to know what happens next!Great introduction to the series, can't wait for the next book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Descriptive By Ada Very unexpected and very descriptive. As a horror story it did it's job, I got a little queasy at the description of the needle. Great!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can't wait for the next story! By Amazon Customer This short story plays off fears we already have- hospitals and needles and whatnot. That’s part of what makes it so effective as a horror story, taking something that you already hate and making it SO MUCH WORSE. The author does this well, and I definitely have him to thank for creeping me out now! The story was a little bit short, so I’m very excited to see what’s going to happen next! Looking forward to the next installment.

The Most Profound Spiritual Teachings I Know Of By Christoff I was advised in May 2005 by a personal counselor to explore The Teachings of Abraham by Esther & Jerry Hicks. It wasn't until January 2009 that one of their titles ("Ask And It Is Given") came into my hands. I read the latter, and liked it, and decided to look for more titles. My second book was "The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham", and I was sold. I bought my own copy + the next two books in the series on The Law of Attraction, "Money and the Law of Attraction: Learning to Attract Wealth, Health and Happiness" and also "The Vortex: Where the Law of Attraction Assembles All Cooperative Relationships". These 3 titles are now combined in this volume, "The Essential Law of Attraction Collection".I have studied many different spiritual pathways since I severed my ties in 1987 from the orthodox Protestant religion in which I was raised. A few Bible verses however have stood out for me over all these years, and they are: Mark 4:33 (right after the parable of the mustard seed): "Never spake Jesus unto them other than in a parable; but when he was alone with his disciples, he told them everything." This meant to me that there have been through the ages two (2) sets of teachings: (1) a watered down, diluted teaching for the masses, and then (2) a core esoteric teaching for only those who were ready for a larger part of the Truth. The second Bible verse which has always been meaningful to me is John 14: 12 - 13 where Jesus said: "You have seen me doing great things. Greater things than these ye will do........" and finally, the most important Bible verse to me is John 16:12 - 13 where Jesus said: "I have many more things to say unto you but you can not bear it now. Howbeit, when the spirit of truth is come, he will guide you in all truth."What these 3 bible verses have in common for me is that they all allude to larger parts of the Truth being/becoming available for every person as he/she grows in their personal search for the meaning of Life.To me, these Teachings of Abraham is what especially the gospel of Mark's quote above and the John 16 quote refer to. Every person finds/will find also his/her own "larger part of Truth" as they pursue their own search. The more sincere your search, the faster and closer I believe you will be guided to more facets of Truth.I am eternally grateful for these Teachings of Abraham (who is a body of wise non-physical teachers) who transmit their wisdom via Esther Hicks. (Jerry transitioned into non-physical Life again in 2011 & Esther continues this amazing work on her own - with a team of helpers of course.)It is a dream of mine to go on one of their cruise ship seminars in the near future. Esther also does many weekend workshops in various larger cities. Go to the www.abraham-hicks.com website if you are interested. This compendium of core teachings is a treasure that I will continue to read, re-read & study as I do every day of my Life for the past 2 years. If you have ever wondered how it is that we get what we get, and why we do NOT get that which we want (sometimes so badly), then I can guarantee that with serious study of this very simple but NEW and profound wisdom, you can also get to where-ever you want to be, from where-ever you are now.I also now believe what Abraham teaches that there is nothing that I/we/you can not be, do or have; provided I/we/you know and understand "the rules of the game of Life". The rules are the three eternal universal Laws which Abraham teaches: The Law of Attraction which postulates, "That which is like unto itself is drawn". The Science of Deliberate Creation - which postulates, "That what we think and then believe and expect, is/will be.". The Art of Allowing - which postulates "I am that which I am, and I am willing to allow all others to be that which they are."This book is highly, highly recommended. And read every word in this compendium - especially the forwards and prefaces. All 3 volumes which comprise this compendium are also still available as single copies. So, if you want to just get your toes wet, start with the first book: "The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham", and take it from there as you are guided. May you experience more JOY in your Life if you undertake this amazing journey of Abraham's wisdom as revealed via Esther Hicks in this handsome compendium.

Phrases would get repeated from one page to another, and passages were missing. It leaves the reader having to guess what the author meant to say, which is an awful product.

A good way to get all three in one if you don't have them.I own all of the Abraham-Hicks books. One is even autographed by Jerry. I love this philosophy and ease of integrating into my life. This is a great book for an Abe beginner. It is beautifully published.

The award-winning author of A Small Death in Lisbon brings an exciting richness to the long shadow of evil in this crackling new novel of spycraft and international intrigue.Lisbon, 1944: Andrea Aspinall, plucked out of academia by British intelligence so that her mathematical knowledge might help in the hunt for atomic secrets, disappears under a new identity in Lisbon, where such secrets are easily bought and sold. Karl Voss, already experienced in the illusions of intrigue when he arrives in Lisbon, is an attache at the German Legation, though he is secretly working against the Nazis to rescue Germany from annihilation. After a night of terrible violence, Andrea creates a family for herself from Voss's memory and the clandestine world they knew. In Portugal, in England, and in the chilly world of Cold War Berlin, she discovers that the deepest secrets aren't held by governments-and that death is a relative term. In The Company of Strangers, Robert Wilson takes the chilling irony of "secret intelligence" to a new and more poignant human level, as he shows that the heart is both more knowing and more secretive than the mind.

The Company of Strangers, by Robert Wilson

Amazon.com Review Robert Wilson, whose award-winning A Small Death in Lisbon broke him out as an international thriller writer in the Ambler, le Carré, and Furst tradition, scores with this exceptionally well-plotted novel of wartime intrigue in England and Portugal. Andrea Aspinall, a brilliant young British mathematician, is recruited by the British Secret Service and put through a rush course in spycraft before being sent to Lisbon, where she quickly falls in love with a disenchanted German agent and, in less than two weeks, manages to lose her virginity, unmask a conspiracy, and interrupt Germany's plan to build the first atomic bomb. The action covers a long time span--from the early years of Word War II to the era of glasnost, when Andrea, now an Oxford mathematician long retired from spying, encounters the man she once loved and lost. Karl Voss has become an East German double agent who's bent on revealing the Russian mole in England's service. The narrative wanders a bit, but the strong, spare writing and deft characterization set this apart as one of the year's better international espionage novels, one that should introduce Wilson to a bigger audience. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly This tense thriller from the author of A Small Death in Lisbon (2000) mixes mathematics with wartime intrigue to fine effect. British intelligence hires Andrea Aspinall, a mathematical wunderkind, to make use of her extraordinary gift in hunting atomic secrets. But Andrea disappears in Lisbon, where she adopts a new identity and meets Karl Voss, an attach‚ at the German legation, who's plotting against the Nazis. The action shifts to Portugal and cold-war Berlin, where intrigue and counter-intrigue are routine, until a bleak ending brings the reader up short. The narrative spans the years from WWII to glasnost and the collapse of the Berlin Wall, yet for all the inevitable social commentary the novel remains at heart a conventional sociopolitical thriller with strong echoes of le Carr‚, Ambler, Deighton and others not to mention Gravity's Rainbow. As the story lengthens and the calendar pages fall away, suspense inevitably slackens, though for the most part the novel remains supremely readable. Wilson's spare prose style never becomes skeletal, and the characters, while lightly sketched, remain believable. The author portrays Andrea in particular with sympathy and insight, and adumbrates her remarkable ability early on when she describes what might be called the joys of mathematics: "The number six... has three divisors one, two and three which if added together come to... six. Isn't that perfect?" The verdict: an evocative and compelling thriller. 5-city author tour; 75,000 first printing. (Oct. 19)Forecast: After the success of A Small Death in Lisbon, winner of Britain's CWA Gold Dagger Award, a lot is riding on this follow-up; expect sales to exceed those of the previous novel.

From School Library Journal Wilson here sticks with what worked so well in his stylish debut, A Small Death in Lisbon, crafting a thriller that moves from the outer edges of the Third Reich to postwar Berlin. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Exceptional By taking a rest Author Robert Wilson has written 5 novels; unfortunately for readers this is only the second that has been offered The U.S. His debut, A Small Death Is Lisbon, was a very good book and was recognized with literary honors. The Company Of Strangers, elevates his work to an even higher level, which if he continues to maintain will place him amongst the great writers of espionage/thriller/mystery. For those unfamiliar with his work I believe the best comparison would be Mr. John LeCarres earlier works, and some of the best that Mr. Robert Ludlum ever wrote. These are not techno-thrillers where plot and theme are replaced by endless descriptions of military hardware. Mr. Wilson writes detailed character studies that are as complex as the situations he places them in; when these aspects are combined with the talent to tell a great story that spans decades, this is an author who gives a reader all that can be expected from a great novel. The time line will take you from London of WWII, to the dawning of Glasnost in The Soviet Union, with stops in Berlin East and West, Lisbon and other locales. The book is about spies, very human, not the 007 Hollywood varieties. The motivation of why they work for a cause or country, what may make them turn, and sometimes turn once again is beautifully written and marvelously complex. The writer explores what takes place when an agent during a war finds that the country he once served, or perhaps betrayed, once the war concludes is now in the enemys camp. Who is his new master, who does he deceive this time if deception is the choice? Does an agent serving a foreign power that becomes the victor continue to serve, or are the ideals he thought were being served prove to have been a fraud and new choices are made? The agents that take center stage in this book are all presented in various levels of detail, however none are vague. In the midst of the wild swings in world politics a variety of people have their beliefs confirmed, betrayed, and have their personal motives subjected to doubt. Do they spy as an act of revenge, a perceived wrong that was inflicted, is the spying based on theology, or is it monetary, or is it the game itself that is the attraction? In addition to all that I have mentioned, there is much more, and there are few authors who could carry out the complexity of plot without it become cloudy, and he includes revelations that in most hands would be cliché at best, and more than likely laughable. The Company Of Strangers, does not wind down as the end arrives. The author literally brings his story to the conclusion on the final page. Mr. Wilson also has not succumbed to churning out work and presenting it in a brief and incomplete manner. He takes all the time he needs, and if that requires the better part of 500 pages, that is what he uses. You have the sense that you are reading exactly what the writer intended. His goal was to produce a great book, not a shallow utilitarian read, written with an eye toward a screenplay, or any other secondary use. This man is a brilliant writer; I recommend his work without condition.

He's there to as military attaché to the German Legation, but he is also embittered by the deaths of his brother and father. Andrea Aspinall has led a sheltered life in London, but she is a skilled mathematician who speaks Portuguese and has been sent to Lisbon as a spy.Lisbon during the end of the Second World War is a hotbed of spies. German or Allied, it doesn't matter, everyone's watching everyone else and information is passed back and forth. The race is on to produce the first atomic bomb and it's in Lisbon that deals are being made to provide the funding for research. For Andrea, she witnesses acts of violence firsthand for the first time, and takes with her, secrets which are to stay with her for the rest of her life. From the tension of wartime Lisbon, we cut to the late 1960's and early 1970's and the focus is back on Andrea and Karl. We're provided with a thrilling yet draining ending to their story. This is a spy novel that is full of intrigue, double-dealings and mystery. We are introduced to, and then given intimate knowledge of, the two main characters. The detailed characterisation is a real feature of this story; we are left in no doubt what motivates each character. But more than just a spy story, it's a love story that tells of impossibly difficult decisions that the clandestine life imposes. It's an epic story of intrigue that keeps delivering.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing, both in plot and in structure. By Mary Whipple Wilson's unusual ability to create fascinating and fully drawn characters within the confines of a plot-driven espionage novel make this novel particularly enjoyable. Andrea/Anne is a character who grows from a protected and naive twenty-year-old to a pragmatic spy and, later in life, to a committed political activist. Karl Voss and his family are "good Germans," disillusioned by Hitler's callous disregard for his soldiers and by his monomaniacal plans, and they believe they can serve their country best by betraying its Nazi leadership. As Karl makes contact with British intelligence and with Anne and other agents based in Lisbon, the reader watches their characters unfold as they respond to the intricacies of spy/counterspy maneuvering.More than half the novel consists of this Anne/Karl story during the waning days of World War II, a tightly drawn, tension-filled, and often genuinely moving interplay of characters and the forces which motivate them. Part II further develops the story of Anne in 1968 in London, with the short Part III taking place in 1989. These latter two sections, while intriguing and consistent with the author's themes, seemed to me to lack the immediacy and excitement of the earlier Lisbon section. The broad scope and intensity of World War II are sacrificed in favor of subtler, more abstract maneuvering during the Cold War in Part II. The motivations of the characters are fuzzier, the consequences of their behavior seem less cataclysmic, and what action there is feels a bit arthritic. The concluding Part III narrows the scope even more to a handful of characters in a country cottage setting, and while it is dramatic and probably realistic, I found it disappointing--as if the author himself were performing some double agent trickery on me, the reader.Like the best of the espionage novels, this one has plenty of action and excitement to keep the reader occupied, especially in Part I, but the book also seems to straddle a line. Because the author is also intent on developing character over an extended period of time, an unusual objective in a thriller, he also needs to include the less exciting Parts II and III which show the characters in their maturity and bring the story and themes full circle, an unusual structure and a fascinating attempt by the author to "have it all." Mary Whipple

What would you do with your own Fountain of Youth? A book about cancer that isn’t a bummer! There are few things like a cancer diagnosis to throw your whole world into turmoil. It used to be a certain death sentence. Cancer used to have a way of writing its own stories. But now in many cases, doctors have the tools to rewrite the endings. After trading-in his surfboard for a four-wheeled walker with hand brakes, the author battles for survival against an incurable cancer in the rapidly-improving world of 21st century medicine. Buoyed by an indomitable spirit, with the determination of an athlete, and narrated with self-described “gallows humor,” this inspirational book is a must-read for anyone who has been affected by this life-threatening disease. 50% of all proceeds from this book will be donated to City of Hope.

Chances are someone you know has been touched by the disease in some way. Few words can destroy a life so completely.29 Again by Mark Barkawitz is not your typical cancer memoir. Sure, it shows just devastating the disease can be to those who have it and to the ones around them, but this book is about the survival of the indomitable spirit. Interspersed with anecdotal stories about the author’s own cancer battle and shared stories about people he has known, are the occasional short stories filled with humor and hope. The title story is about a middle aged man who stumbles upon his college apartment building, having been moved from its previous location to make way for new condos. Exploring the empty rooms, he finds things pretty much as he left when moving out twenty years prior, including a layer of dust of course. He soon realizes that being there has some how made him younger again. Searching around the detritus of his former life he finds a ring lost by a former lover and is inspired to track her down on Facebook, only to find she is final stages of an un-treatable form of cancer. Can he use his new found fountain of youth to prolong her life until a treatment, or better yet a cure, can be found?Charming, funny, witty, absolutely heartbreaking. From the thrill of beating cancer to the death of an old friend or a story of child who life is being cut short. This very real book offers the range of emotions. Ultimately you will be inspired.Half the proceeds from the sale of this book are earmarked for donation to the City of Hope. A terrific stocking stuffer for the true survivors on your list.I received a copy of this book in exchange for fair and honest review

A collection of short stories about the author's ordeal with extensive cancer treatments and back to his surfing passion. Other stories about friends who were struck with cancer including a touching tribute to a fellow surfer. Engaging writing style with helpful mantras and humor that got him through the experience. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This book is a fictional mystery novel. It is lighthearted and fun, with a variety of entertaining characters, but what makes it special is the location of where the story takes place. A stretch of paradise starting at Okaloosa Island, traveling through Destin, all the way to the east end of 30A. This story includes some of the area’s great restaurants, people, stores and beaches; allowing the reader to take one more journey to their favorite destination, Florida’s Gulf Coast and the beaches of 30A.

Free PDF Ebook Berlioz on Music: Selected Criticism 1824-1837From Oxford University Press

The quintessential Romantic artist of his century, Hector Berlioz impressed Paganini and Liszt as "Beethoven's only heir" and dazzled the young Wagner as a composer, orchestra conductor, and critic. To Paris and all Europe, Berlioz was known as much for his writings as for his music, yet there has been no English-language anthology of his criticism available until now. Berlioz on Music plunges us into the Parisian music world during one of its most vibrant periods, the revolutionary years surrounding 1830, still resonant with memories of Napoleon and the French Revolution of only a few decades before. We follow Berlioz as he confronts the transition to a modern, commerce-driven society where music as high art has yet to find a place, using his pen to praise or scold, rouse or cajole performers, composers, managers, and the general public. The articles presented here-given in chronological order and, with a few exceptions, in their entirety-are accompanied by an introductory paragraph and notes that explain Berlioz's references to persons, musical and literary works, historical events, and more. The result is an engaging collection of Berlioz's lively prose, presented with scholarly rigor and rendered in accessible, graceful English. Scholars, lovers of Berlioz's music, history enthusiasts, and Francophiles will delight in this compelling introduction to one of the richest periods of French culture.

Berlioz on Music: Selected Criticism 1824-1837From Oxford University Press

Review "This is a finely-judged anthology, impeccably presented and all the more valuable for its inclusion of some lesser-known treasures from the composer's early critical career. Rosenberg's translations give us Berlioz at full throttle, while Kolb's accompanying texts combine wisdom and empathy as they deftly set the scene." - Katharine Ellis, University of Bristol, author of Music Criticism in Nineteenth-Century France: La Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris, 1834-1880

"Katherine Kolb's searching essay on the role and function of music criticism in the early 19th century provides a brilliant introduction to this selection of articles written by Berlioz in his early years, years when his views on music were as colourfully expressed as the orchestration of the Symphonie fantastique and as deeply felt as the love scene in Roméo et Juliette." - Hugh Macdonald, General Editor of the New Berlioz Edition, author of Beethoven's Century (2008), Music in 1853 (2012) and Bizet (2014)

"Berlioz was forced to write criticism for a living, and hated the necessity, but he wrote marvellously, using his position to attack what was bad and exalt what was good, with the enthusiasm and caustic humour that were his trademarks. He collected and revised some of it later in books; but this welcome anthology shows him at grips with the day-to-day Paris music scene, at the moment of putting pen to paper." - David Cairns, author of Berlioz(2000).

"A fine and authoritative new translation of Berlioz's music criticism." - BBC Music Magazine

This remarkable volume brings together a wide range of Berlioz's critical writings... Kolb...presents the pieces in chronological order, which allows the reader to witness the evolution of Berlioz's critical thinking and compositional style. Music historians will be especially interested in articles dealing with Berlioz's opposition to the aesthetic stances of legendary French musicologist François-Joseph Fétis, and those interested in the cultural milieu of Paris prior to the Revolution of 1848 will find the editor's remarks about musical journalism of the period to be most enlightening."--Choice

About the Author Katherine Kolb is Professor Emerita of French and German at Southeastern Louisiana University. She also founded and directed the Kolb-Proust Archive at the University of Illinois-Urbana, where she collaborated on the first anthology of Marcel Proust's correspondence (Marcel Proust, Lettres, Plon 2004).Samuel N. Rosenberg is Professor Emeritus of French and Italian at Indiana University, where he taught language and linguistics -- including translation -- and literature of the Middle Ages. His translations, like his philological scholarship, have appeared in a wide variety of publications both American and French.

A finalist for the Edgar and Mary Higgins Clark Awards, in her riveting debut Invisible City, journalist Julia Dahl introduces a compelling new character in search of the truth about a murder and an understanding of her own heritage.

Just months after Rebekah Roberts was born, her mother, an Hasidic Jew from Brooklyn, abandoned her Christian boyfriend and newborn baby to return to her religion. Neither Rebekah nor her father have heard from her since. Now a recent college graduate, Rebekah has moved to New York City to follow her dream of becoming a big-city reporter. But she's also drawn to the idea of being closer to her mother, who might still be living in the Hasidic community in Brooklyn.

Then Rebekah is called to cover the story of a murdered Hasidic woman. Rebekah's shocked to learn that, because of the NYPD's habit of kowtowing to the powerful ultra-Orthodox community, not only will the woman be buried without an autopsy, her killer may get away with murder. Rebekah can't let the story end there. But getting to the truth won't be easy―even as she immerses herself in the cloistered world where her mother grew up, it's clear that she's not welcome, and everyone she meets has a secret to keep from an outsider.

Invisible City (Rebekah Roberts Novels), by Julia Dahl

From Booklist For 23-year-old Rebekah Roberts, a stringer for the New York Tribune, a story becomes uncomfortably personal as she seeks to get at the truth. The discovery of the naked body of Hasidic Jew Rivka Mendelssohn, found in a scrap yard owned by her well-to-do husband, brings to mind the anger and sorrow Rebekah feels toward her own mother, a Hasidic Jew from Brooklyn who took off when Rebekah was an infant. Her feelings are intensified when Saul Katz, NYPD liaison with the Hasidic community, shocks Rebekah by telling her that she looks just like her mother. As Katz provides Rebekah with inside information and urges her to pursue what is essentially the cover-up of a murder in the closed Hasidic community, she learns that her Jewish heritage goes only so far in her understanding of what she’s investigating. This novel is particularly notable for its combination of a skillfully wrought, increasingly suspenseful mystery populated by well-drawn characters and a deeply sympathetic understanding of a contemporary culture that remains insular for its own understandable reasons. Journalist Dahl’s debut sets a high bar. --Michele Leber

Review

“Strong, blunt prose...a harrowing tale.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“An absolutely crackling, unputdownable mystery told by a narrator with one big, booming voice. I loved it.” ―GILLIAN FLYNN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

“[An] impressive debut…Dahl's convincing dialogue and perfect pacing make for a real page-turner. And her storytelling skills illuminate the intriguing worlds of the tabloid press, Hasidism, the NYPD, and Brooklyn's 20-somethings--as well as the fragile boundaries of family, religion, and life itself.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Fast-paced, suspenseful...[Invisible City] rises above the crime-novel genre in its unusual psychological, spiritual and sociological dimensions, entering a world unfamiliar to most people.” ―The Washington Post

“Bringing together the hyenas of tabloid journalism with the secretive, inwardly focused, self-protecting religious Jews, Dahl manages to demonize and humanize both, while delivering a riveting story. I sincerely hope there will be a sequel because after reading the last page, I wanted to know: What happens next?” ―The Boston Globe

“Masterly, pitch-perfect.” ―Haaretz

“Surprising and uncompromising…This is riveting stuff indeed, and Dahl is a major talent.” ―BookPage

By Paul La Rosa I was drawn to this book for two obvious reasons -- its Brooklyn locale and its story of a young reporter! Hey, I was once a young reporter and I can tell you that this book is on the money, especially for a tabloid like the one the lead character works at in this novel. On top of that, the story features one of the Hasidic Jewish communities located in the borough. That's the real eye-opener of this story...the way the lead character Rebekah figures out her way around this closed community and the way it dovetails with her own past. One can tell Ms. Dahl did a lot of research about the so-called "black hats" because her story rings true and her prose is sharp and very engaging. I think you'll be charmed by Rebekah and fascinated by the closed world she enters to solve a crime and find answers to her own past. Highly recommended!!One more note: I especially liked how Ms. Dahl did not take the easy way to lean on caricatures of the Hasidim. On the contrary, the novel provides perspective to enlighten the non-religious among us as to how this type of cult-ish community provides relief and comfort to those who follow its tenets.

Zack I'm an orthodox Jew (although not Hasidic) so part of me wanted to read this book so I could find out if the author treated Orthodox Judiasm with respect. For the most part, the answer to that question is yes. She did not join in the orthodox bashing that has been engaged in by many recent authors. She tries to be balanced while discussing some of the drawbacks of the community without coming out judgemental or negative. Unfortunately, this tone seemed to overlap a little into her writing which seemed to lack passion or energy. The biggest drawback, however, was that I simply did not like the main character in the novel. She was immature and, quite frankly, a little whiney. And way too much of the book was devoted to information that didn't move the plot forward, or explore the complicated culture, or even the crime. All in all, I don't hate the book, but I don't love it either.

I liked the premise quite a bit - a young woman starting her professional life in NYC as a reporter, pursuing a career in a field she studied in college. Along the way, Rebekah - the main character, learns much more than she anticipated. Having been raised just by her father, as her mother left when Rebekah was an infant, she has many questions about her past. Her mother, a Hasidic Jewish woman, was from the area of NYC where Rebekah now lives and works, and these two worlds collide when Rebekah is assigned to report on a woman's death in the Hasidic community. This story leads Rebekah into danger, as well as offers her a glimpse of the life her mother led.I found the storyline a good one and wanted to learn the identity of the dead woman, as well as what led to her death. I was also intrigued about what Rebekah could learn about her mother. I found the writing a bit stilted though and at times, hard to follow. I found myself skimming pages and skipping ahead. So I recommend it, but with reservations. As the author continues the series and publishes more, I will give it another chance. The ending of book one gives the reader a glimpse of what is still to come, and it is a good lure.

I don't like the fantasy genre so I passed on those but he knows how to build a plot, write intelligently and insightfully and keep the momentum going until the end. I love the cross cultural aspects of the Nicholas Linnear series. I learn something new about Japan in each book. This novel is high tech and high touch, violent and philosophical.
