We see Tess start off as mute, subservient and mostly unresponsive after the death of her baby Rachel is uncovered. Sent to a secure unit, she slowly confesses to another death she is involved with; that of her brother Stephen. Talking this through with her therapist Evelyn, she begins to make sense of some of her childhood. Then, there is a race against time to bring things to a satisfactory conclusion before she has to leave the unit.I found the writing very emotive in parts, certainly the language used was often lyrical in nature. The story meanders along at its own pace. It is certainly a very slow starter, but then about 2/3 to 3/4 through, things start to heat up and move at, what I think, is too fast a pace from where we started. There are a fair few psychological parts but I found these to be well within my layman's understanding. The characters were also well fleshed out. I really did care about Tess, warmed to Evelyn and thought Steven was a very sad character (albeit mostly of his own volition) and, at times, just wanted to slap Peter Archer!My main criticism and the reason for the loss of a star is that I thought the time scale for the story was far too short. Did she really go from totally mute through opening up to complete self-awareness so quickly. If she did then I want some of that therapy!But all in all, a really good story, very well written. I will be putting this author on my "watch list".I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It has a fair amount of dark secrets that I found unsettling. The book is designed to be dark with very little relief.Well written though.

The beginning was interesting , but the solution was apparent early in the story. We were told the outcome about 2/3 into the story and the last 1/3 just fizzled out. I wonder if anyone really edited and proofed this story. There were a lot of typos. There were also some errors that may not bother some people but I found extremely annoying, The story is set in the early 1960's, but there is a character addicted to oxycontin, which did not exist then. An important part of the plot was dependant on the genetics of blood type. She said that with a mother type O (OO) and a father type AB, the baby would be AB. This is incorrect. One inherits 1 gene from each parent, so the child could be A (AO) or B (BO), but not AB. In fact if the child was type AB, then "her" mother was someone else. These are really glaring errors. I don't think an author should make these kinds of mistakes and any editor with a bit of intelligence would have caught it, along with all the typos.

Or if I may shift analogies, a slow-blooming flower where it gets richer and richer and more is carefully revealed. You can't guess. And don't want to try. I love everything I've ever read by Susan Isaacs, and yet I think I enjoyed this novella the most. Find a quiet corner this weekend for an hour or two and enjoy.

I have a feeling that this novella was written many years ago, perhaps with a view to be reworked and turned into a full length book. . The plot is simplistic, most of the questions are not answered in the end. However there is an engaging heroine and here and there one sees glimpses of the great writer Isaacs was to become.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cute little mystery but the recipes fall flat By Leann This was a cute little read, and I enjoyed the book. I don't even normally bother with any of the recipes in these cozy books, but I browsed through these, being an avid cook. I was rather shocked to read that the "fondue" recipe called for melting a few assorted blocks of cheese and that was it. Fondue is a little bit more involved than that, if it's to be even halfway decent. It's typically made with some form of Swiss cheese included, as well as butter, wine and flour, in order to keep it from being nothing more than melted stringy cheese. Fondue pots are usually kept warm with a sterno can beneath them, to keep the mixture at the best temperature for dipping. The consistency should be like a very very thick sauce, not just melted cheeses.The Chocolate mousse was similarly disappointing, as all it called for was heavy cream and melted chocolate, which is a joke. That would not give a mousse-like texture at all! I think this author would be better off to stick to writing her mysteries, than recommending recipes of this low caliber. Or at the very least, I'd suggest she test them out first on some food connoisseurs.

Improvements needed By Wreditor Although the book's cover and interior information suggests that it has an editor, what I found inside was misleading. I can forgive some very minor layout issues, but not when some of the stories contain glaring punctuation errors and--worse--terribly unintentional (as opposed to deliberate, as in character dialogue) ungrammatical sentences. The stories themselves are far from the worst I've ever read--some are quite absorbing, in fact--but the poor proof-reading left *this* reader disappointed.Let me recommend, in all sincerity, that the editor take greater pains to proofread and correct, as necessary, poor and/or incorrect punctuation (where it's characteristically appropriate), clumsy sentence structures, and other inexplicables in contributors' accepted stories. E.g., in "Already Seen," the protagonist is consistently referred to as Pearl, but she repeatedly tells another character her name is Valerie. The WHY of this is never clarified. Is her last name Pearl, as designated throughout the narrative, and Valerie a first name? If so, why the mystery? If no, what's the explanation?

Lost in the Bayou By sharon I started reading this book when I went to bed the other night, thinking that I would read a chapter or two, get drowsy and fall asleep. It didn't quite turn out that way. By around 3:00am I had finished the last page. It was definitely a page turner. I simply couldn't put it down. I kept thinking, "okay this chapter won't leave me wanting more. I'll turn out the light and go to sleep as soon as I finish it." But each chapter did leave me wondering what would happen next. The deeper into the book I got the faster my heart would race and I found myself reading even faster. I would recommend this to any young reader or older reader (like myself) who enjoys a good read. It is such a good story that everyone will enjoy it. I would love to see this come out as a movie. The characters jump out of the pages and come to life so easily. I think this author will go far and I certainly plan to read everything I can that he has written. Mr. DeVille, thank you for letting your imagination take me somewhere I've never been. Please continue your wonderful writing, many young people will enjoy this for years to come. You are truly a gifted writer.

By Joe Perrone Jr Cornell DeVille is not exactly a household name, but if this talented author continues to turn out books like this one, he soon will be. I stumbled across his work on an authors website that I frequent, and was intrigued by its title and description. I downloaded a free sample and was immediately captivated by the opening scene (which, unfortunately, was also the extent of the "free" part). "Oh, what the heck?" I thought, "For $3.99 how can I go wrong?" So, I purchased it. Big mistake! Now it's two-thirty in the AM, and I've just finished reading what is technically a YA mystery, but qualifies, in my opinion, as a book suited for all age groups - it's that good!Lost In The Bayou (don't you just love the title?) tells the tale of two young children, trapped in a battle with a crazed uncle who is intent upon acquiring their father's estate at any cost, even if means killing his niece and nephew to accomplish his goal. Along the way we are treated to scenarios painted with a brush that is virtually dripping with descriptive adjectives of every color and hue. Set in the Sixties, Lost In The Bayou is replete with vivid images of that historic era, including references to hit songs and automobiles popular at the time. Then, there's the antagonist's obsession with The Lone Ranger, a theme that runs throughout the book, serving as a metaphor for the battle between good and evil. The characters are as varied and three dimensional as any of those created by the likes of Twain, and just as endearing. I especially enjoyed meeting Mrs. Deffenbaugh, the housekeeper.Lost In The Bayou is a story that will definitely suck you in - much like the quicksand that surrounds the big cypress tree - but to find out how it's done, you'll just have to buy the book and read it! 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Evil uncles and alligators By Mrs. Vonnie J. Hughes Such a great novel for the YAs. A bit of gruesome, a bit of mystery, a bit of pathos, even an alligator or two. What's not to like? I defy anyone to put this book down once they've started, not even for fire, flood or famine. DeVille has crafted an intriguing tale of two kids whose parents have supposedly died in a plane crash. Their nearest relative is an uncle straight out of the original Grimm fairy tales. Of course he's nutty as a fruitcake but dangerous - very dangerous. So the kids escape to the bayou. Hobson's choice. Great storytelling where problem is piled upon problem. Always good to see enterprising kids outwit evil adults.

Aberdeen's Metropolitan Police force must discover who the victim is and under what circumstances the death has occurred. Former royal aide and now Detective Inspector, Vanessa Fiske, and Detective Sergeant Colin MacNee are put in charge of the investigation. Under the watchful eye of Detective Chief Superintendent Campbell Esslemont - who prefers to keep things as low-key and make as few waves as possible - Fiske and MacNee uncover a long-hidden conspiracy that can be traced back to the mid-1960s and the Bloody Royals.Vanessa Fiske's unfortunate history with a member of the royal household soon complicates matters and threatens the outcome of the case. UK and Scotland politics clash, further complicating matters, yet DI Fiske's dogged determination to bring those responsible for a decades-old murder pays off in a climactic and satisfying ending.There are quite a number of characters in Bloody Royals, which isn't necessarily a bad thing - it certainly kept me on my toes. This is certainly not a quick poolside read. As someone unfamiliar with Scotland/UK politics and British law enforcement procedures I was worried I'd have trouble following the storyline. Fortunately, Alan Alexander's writing is such that he has a way of explaining the story without stopping to discuss the particulars of a political system that might be foreign to some readers. This allowed the plot to progress nicely without any disruptions or unnecessary distractions.Alan Alexander has written a wonderfully entertaining thriller, full of twists, turns and surprises. I especially appreciated the manner in which Mr. Alexander portrayed DI Vanessa Fiske. She's a strong, independent and intelligent woman - a highly likeable character that readers will want to seek out in future series installments.I would highly recommend Bloody Royals to anyone looking for a clever crime fiction novel that has readers guessing until the very end.

While I did figure out the villain with about 1/3 of the book to read, how the villain was caught, and if the villain would be caught, was not revealed till the end of the story. Knowing who the villain is does not detract from the plot as this is a police procedural set in Scotland and seeing how the police had to not only collect the needed evidence, but deal with lawyers, the law and political pressure kept the conclusion in doubt until the end. Good story telling.I have one major complaint. The news media plays a significant role in the story and the constant merging of a newspaper title in italics, as it should be, into the next word in regular print was really annoying. I hope this glitch is corrected in the Kindle edition (which is the edition I read).Good story and will read the next in the series.

The main character, Ethan, has just received some very troubling news regarding his family. He must decide if he should stay in the world has he knows it or if he should submit to the UnderGround.The author does a good job drawing the reader into his world.I can't wait to see how CA Carr turns this hockey player into 007.I was given an Arc for an honest review.

Great intro By NK Author Services/Ebooks Galore This feels like it's the start of a fantastic new series.Ethan, Mr. Superstar Hockey Player, finds out his parents lost all of his money, and then it goes downhill from there. The cast of characters you meet here are phenomenal. You can tell the author really did their research on the information they used in here. It's a well written intro story that is going to bring about an amazing action series.

Phan Author Cassandra Carr has started a brand new book serial called Underground and the first story is Off the Grid. She had me hooked right from the first page with the dialogue and action involving Ethan Jackson. The story was fresh, exciting and suspenseful. I felt so bad for what Ethan was going through and I loved his introduction to the black ops group, Underground and their plans for him to be off the grid. He fit right in with the rest of the other members and I cannot wait to read all the upcoming stories. I believe this author has another winner on her hands with her journey in this new genre.

It will not teach you to speak PA German. It is fascinating in its own right as it compares PA to standard German. Much more of an historical document and really only for people ho have an interest in the history of the language.

Inspirational messages with lots of opportunity for coloring fun on heavyweight perforated paper By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:2cd85f9483d5a38396d5ba439acd64e9]]This is my second book of coloring designs by artist Joy Ting for Peter Pauper Press. There are 31 designs with inspirational messages that that have lots of abstract designs surrounding and inside of the words on the page. The designs range from fairly easy to color to much more complex and a number of them have fairly thick black lines with them. Thirty of the sayings are simply that while one is attributed to Confucius.The pages are a heavyweight white paper. This is fantastic as my pencils, gel pens, and ultra fine markers (except for alcohol based markers) do not bleed through on this paper. The designs are printed on only one side with the back side left blank, so if you are using regular markers or watercolors, you can put an extra page in between just in case some color leaches through.The pages are perforated and are extremely easy to remove. The paper is also acid-free which means that the paper will not turn colors with age and all the work you put into coloring the designs will be safe. Additionally, the binding easily lies flat and gives you access to make coloring in this book and easy and fun thing to do.It is a inspirational and fun book to color in and the heavy, bold lines make it easy to put my colors in exactly the right spot.

Ross Printed on one side, heavy paper, and awesome designs that go all the way to the edge of the page. I love the way the quotes are done in the design, many books with quotes really don't have that much going on to color.I think I have a new favorite coloring book - I'll be picking up the others in this series. :D

By Jane Lewis I have been contemplating about marriage lately and trying to think if it's really for me. I am one of those few cynics out there about marriage life. Marriage life is a scary thing. I always feel that I prefer the dating status because there is excitement, fun and you almost always feel like you are in cloud 9. This book has made me feel like I am having second thoughts now about getting married. I am now feeling positive about getting married. I like how the book explain how to improve your intimacy to your spouse. The best part of this book is the exercise on honesty wherein you hug your spouse from the back and just tell him or her some honest words that you want to tell to your partner without them reacting to what you say. That was just a really incredible exercise. I think it was a brilliant idea. I am recommending this book to all my girlfriends may they be single or married. They can always get something out from this book.

Let's be honest, at some point in our marriages we feel like something is lost. Something happens and everything changes. I'm not going to talk about my problems but we have to accept all the advice we need if we want to save our relationships. I bought this book on discount.

It is never perfect and we have to continually strive to make our partners feel loved and secure. Marriage itself is just a union of two different individuals who love each other. Both have differences and in some cases will result to a clash of ideas or attitudes. This book is great find for couples who have issues as it provide tips and advises on how couples can cope up with the trials of marriage. The book’s main point is basically that both should have open communication with each other try to be as honest with as possible to your partner. Honesty is the primary block (not to mention fragile) building of a healthy relationship. Angel Greene really made a very helpful book and I hope she’ll make more books like this one.

About the Author A little about me...Weaving words into characters and worlds is something I live for. Writing is something I used to love as a kid. Sitting through English class as a teenager was the only period in school where I stayed awake and learned something. When I left I followed a path that would take me away from my passion. Now I've finally taken the road less traveled and decided to commit words to page and screen in order to imagine worlds filled with characters all with their own stories to tell and me as the guide. If a story causes you to feel any one of the myriad of emotions we all possess as human beings then I've done my job as a writer. I'm an Irishman hailing from Dublin but now living in Sydney, Australia. I've come to meet people from all over the globe. I love listening and learning about others. Movies such as Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Jurassic Park and Blade Runner kept me up late into the night as a kid (even if I shouldn't have been watching them). Later on I found video games. Resident Evil and Silent Hill on the original iteration of the PlayStation blew me away. Books were a constant though. While I fall in and out of love with movies and games, books have always stayed with me. The first book I ever read cover to cover was 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes when I was 8. I borrowed it from a traveling library that came to my school. I moved on to the Famous Five, The Hardy Boys and every Roald Dahl novel I could get my hands on. As I got older I began to love the likes of King, Cornwall, Koontz and Barker. I am inspired by all of the above as well as other great writers such as Neil Gaimon, Kylie Chan, Sean Platt, Johnny B. Truant, David W. Wright, J. Thorn, J. F. Penn and David Gaughran. These are just some of the amazing writers who I follow and learn from through their meticulously crafted works of fiction and non-fiction.

Watts This is the first exposure I have had of David Delaneys work, and I can truly say that I am hooked! I carry a particular fondness for the thriller stories of Dean Koontz, and Delaney has met that standard with an originality that sets his voice above those who merely dabble in fan fiction. The Vanishing brought many interesting aspects of Australia together with a gritty cast of characters to make you unable to set the book aside without needing to read "just one more chapter", and soon you've finished, out of breath and hungry for more. A writer to follow, and I will definitely be following David Delaney again. You should too.

By James Tallcott I give this author four stars as encouragement.The last half of the book was well-paced and held my interest. Overall he had a good story plot when he was dealing with the police force. However, I recommend less dependence on cliched personality. Detectives who are clueless about computers, rookies who do not play well with others. Supervisors who are hidebound to pressure from above and the press.The victim was over developed. A teenage girl can become a victim without the need for a recently dead mother, a grieving, alcoholic father, or a sexually-driven friend. She also does not need to be lured by a virtual friend on the internet. A teenager will test her limits as a normal process of growing. Too much wasted ink was spent for no benefit to the story.The antagonists were one-dimensional. each was a sociopath, each was a foreigner, each was monumentally stupid in their operations. They were destined to be caught by detectives who were using the full range of police procedures.I do not disparage this author. I read hundreds of books and enjoy first attempts without becoming turned off by minor flaws. I would recommend this author to anyone who also enjoys watching an author improve his craft.

But that is a good thing.I could not put this fast-paced crime thriller down. It’s one of those books where you don’t even realize you’re turning the page (or swiping your phone), and before you know it, it’s over. And though the ending was satisfying, I really wished it would just keep going.In this story, Cornell investigates the murder of two young women, and during that process he finds that another young woman has vanished.His gut tells them they’re all linked, but he has to connect the dots. Only a few odd pieces of information come to light at first, and it involves surgical drugs, STDs, and computers. Luckily for Cornell, he’s got a smart, loyal team, just as passionate as him to find the bad guys, who easily accept whatever challenge falls their way.Delaney expertly captures the essence of each of his characters, who range from detective to murderer to journalist to alcoholic to teenage girl. And he does a great job of portraying life for people living in the city versus the suburbs.The story is told from multiple points of view, and though it takes a while to understand all the characters’ connections, there is an ominous feel from the very beginning.The characters are compelling, and the heroes are sympathetic. And even though it’s inevitable that something big and bad is going to happen, Delaney delivers it with a twist and keeps the reader guessing.It’s a great beginning to a series, and does a good job of establishing Detective Dean Cornell, a passionate Sydney cop with strong gut instincts. As the protagonist, Cornell is immediately likeable and easy to picture.The Vanishing is certainly an entertaining read, but it also highlights some relevant current issues, such as dealing with people online. Savvy computer users and interacting with people online plays a crucial role in the story. And Delaney threads the details throughout the story in such an interesting way, that feels very natural. Without giving away (hopefully) spoilers, just know that there are a few twists and surprises.Delaney is a wonderful writer. The villians are so evil they’re fun to hate, the good guys are flawed but are working hard to be better, and everyone has a strong sense of purpose and are not afraid to express their opinions.I don’t think I can say enough good things about Delaney’s writing. So much happens in this book and Delaney really brings his writing to life. Even once I finished the book, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for hours.If you’re looking for an intense, suspenseful detective story, then I definitely recommend picking up The Vanishing. It’s got everything you’d want: high stakes, action, smart characters, and a great sense of urgency throughout. I’m glad this is book one of a series, and I can’t wait to read book two and see what Detective Dean Cornell is up to.
