Everything from dragons to gnomes to unicorns and much more. I don't have any other coloring books by Aaron Popcock, so I did my homework before pre-ordering this book. It looks like he has released at least one book of fantasy sketches and that those look great. I took a chance on this book based on that information and Creative Haven's quality printing. I am really glad that I did so as it is very different from other books that I own. There are 30 designs in this coloring book which are printed on bright white perforated paper that is a fairly heavy stock. The designs are printed on one side of the page only.I usually like to remove my projects from the books to work on and I love that Creative Haven always makes it easy for me to do so.All of my gel pens and markers bleed through on Creative Haven books to varying degrees. I use some sort of paper under the sheet that I am working on to keep the ink from leaking through.

He loves to color and draw and he picked this one out himself. I was pleased to find a nice mix of gender friendly pictures. Lots of unicorns and mermaids. While having dragons and trolls too. Keep your pitchforks to yourself, i'm not saying a boy cant color a beautiful mermaid. He just loves dragons!

By Joseph Nigrelli I had emailed the author Jerry to tell him about how much I had enjoyed the series St. Gabriel. He had asked me to read this new series. I honestly didn't know jerry had this dark dark twisted side to his style. But seriously I was blown away. This is not my typical read.......I absolutely loved how he put it together. I will not set any spoilers into motion here, however I must commend you Jerry, fine work indeed. Please don't stop writing!

The twisted mind of a poor little boy product of a yet more twisted personality of his mom makes him a demented killer. Paddy, the ex-priest detective is clever and persistent. Good reading that you cannot let go.

What I don't like is the poor placement of the pictures. Really? Most of the pictures take up both pages with a lot of them smack in the middle. I am taking the book apart to take full advantage of the pictures. If you don't mind breaking up the book binder or removing the pages you'll like this book. Happy coloring!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Cheap By L. Howell Poor picture placement puts most of the pictures on the middle binding making it near impossible to color. The paper is thin and not high quality also.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I didn't like this book at all By lueb I didn't like this book at all. More is not always better. The designs are just repeats from clip art found elsewhere. I returned it.

All you have to do is put the time and study the materials, following the instructions and most of all, have an open mind when analyzing and studying this material. I highly recommend to follow what he has to offer. It will only take your practice to another level.

By Donald Hunt Sammy Franco, has a laundry list of qualifications, andhas taught both Military and Law Enforcement, as well asthe public, his Widow Maker program. It is not fancy kicking, that takes years to master, and ifyou make a mistake, well.........Widow Maker, is a Self Defense, Last Resort, No PlayNo Return, Very Damaging, Close Quarters Combat Program.SF's...., Delta Force, SEALS, Green Berets, Rangers, as wellas the Russian Special Forces, are all trained in this type of hand tohand combat. It is easy to learn, as it is almost all basic head and eye strikes, with afew twists. You will see the term RAZING, and learn what it means, as well as the typeof "mind set" you will have to reach, in order to use the Widow Maker programwork to save your life.If you have not read the first books, I suggest you go back and start with them.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A definitive guide for any individual looking for the most effective self defense techniques available By E.A. Gray [[VIDEOID:fcbfd5b66b3b9a004c9f8c56bcf16554]] As a fan of tactical defense techniques, I have been practicing and utilizing some of the best of them for the past 12 years. Starting with Krav Maga in the Marine Corp I incorporated the most capable actions while personally adjusting them to my liking. Unleash Hell from the Widow Maker Program Series has been a primary staple in my catalog since its inception. Mr. Franco's combinations are not just effective, but should be a standard to measure others by in the field of debilitating self defense tactics. I don't know of another program that is so well put together and yet clearly defined. The writing is succinct and dense with information, while the illustrations are professionally shot and work directly in tandem with the training material. After following the instructions in this manual I know that my skills are even more foreboding than they ever were prior. From strength training and traumatic schematics to clearly defining the benefits of the razing technique and breaking down each of their examples, there is nothing this guide that leaves one guessing about how to apply what's being taught. Also, the author's descriptions of the beat systems and how they correlate to the actions involved make the defense techniques feel more rhythmic and easy to grasp. Such training made it even more fun once he arrived at reaction dynamics: A description of probable responses to the razing technique. From there, he gets into the combos and teaches you the multiple ways to destroy your opponent while also leaving workspace for you to create your own from the myriad choices he's provided.

The Directive: A Novel, by Matthew Quirk

From Booklist *Starred Review* Having barely escaped alive from a corrupt consulting firm (in the blockbuster The 500, 2012), lawyer Mike Ford has established himself as a go-to political fixer in Washington, D.C. But his plan to live a quiet, respectable life is sorely threatened when his older brother, Jack, drags him into a job to steal the Federal Reserve’s directive on monetary policy prior to a major announcement, opening up a two-hour window for some serious insider training. Mike, resourceful and well-schooled in cons and grifts from childhood by his ex-con father, plans to blow up the job from the inside until the lives of his fiancée, Annie Clark (daughter of a megarich hedge-fund operator), and his father are threatened. Then it becomes a deadly race to learn who’s behind it all—keeping in mind his father’s advice to “never bet in another man’s game”—and come out of the mess as best he can. Solidly researched, with elements of a technothriller, this is a nonstop, heart-pounding ride in which moral blacks and whites turn gray in “the efficient alignment of power and interests” that is big-time politics. Quirk has another high-powered hit on his hands. --Michele Leber

Review Praise for THE 500: "Gripping...the action never lets up for a second, and the pages cannot be turned fast enough." ---Associated Press"This ripping yarn springs and snaps along like a row of wolf traps." ---Newsday "Quirk is such an expert in escalation that, like a frog in a pot of boiling water, you'll be done before you even realize it."―Entertainment Weekly

About the Author Matthew Quirk studied history and literature at Harvard College, and spent five years as a reporter for The Atlantic. His first novel, The 500, was translated into 20 languages. He lives in Washington, DC.

Three-card Monte By Kindle Customer I initially enjoyed the character, Mike Ford, but grew frustrated with him as he navigated through the lies and manipulations of his brother and the other cast of characters he encountered. And maybe that was the intent of the author. Because on the one hand you really like Mike Ford; he is very smart, insightful, funny, and tough. But the author throws a curve at you, and you wonder how can this guy not see what is in front of him. Well, low and behold he does see it. Mike Ford sees it in such a way that he literally turns the tables on everyone. As I thought about it some more, the story is told in first-person and that would explain why I got frustrated with Mike. And that is a good thing, because that was possibly the intent of the authorAs one reviewer noted, pay attention to the three-card Monte at the very beginning. The story goes in the same (mis-) direction. I want provide with a long draw out story line; I often don't find those reviews helpful or insightful. I will say that Mike Ford can be a pain in the backside, but you cannot help but like the guy. I look forward to Matthew Quirk further developing this character, because Mike Ford's history is dark, complicated, and a little twisted. This type of character makes for excellent storylines in the future.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed it. By The Count Worth a read. Will leave the detailed plot recap to the pompous reviewers, or you can just read the dust cover or product description. Found this to be a good fast paced read with an interesting set of characters. As I read there were parts of the book where it was very hard to put down and do something else. Found a couple of the plot twists at the end to be a bit overly convenient but a matter personal taste and certainly didn't ruin the story. If you're looking for a 'good author you've never heard of' this is worth a look.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Smart, inventive, and addictive--and I'm not a thriller buff By Jonathan Rauch I rarely read thrillers but this one intersects with my world (I'm a DC policy wonk), and the premise--a page-turner about the Federal Reserve--seemed like an impossible challenge. Well, the book gobbled up my recent camping trip and made me antisocial for two days. It has all the twists and turns the genre requires, and then some, and the dialogue is smart and snappy...but it also has fun with ideas along the way. I was still spinning the scenarios out in my head days after finishing the book. One tip: pay close attention to the game of three-card monte at the beginning.

I thought it was a good book and I caught myself laughing several times By Liz Deadly SandsBy: Dana MentinkDeadly Sands is a little different from the other books I have read by Dana Mentink. I thought it was a good book and I caught myself laughing several times. This is a mystery and romance story and be sure to read all of it to the end. It gets really good and has you on the edge of your seat till the end. Marty Barr owns land at the Desert Star Preserve in Ferocious , Arizona and takes care of all different kind of animals. Marty was having a normal day till a rock covered with newspaper fell from the sky and a few minutes later a small airplane does the same. Why would someone be flying over Marty's land? We have a lot going on in Deadly Sands, rocks, planes, dead body, shooting with bullets flying around and don't forget all the animals and Marty's friend that helps her with the animals. Marty has lived a quite and private life for years now. Joe Hala a native American veterinarian and also Marty's tour guide. She also likes joe a lot. Marty is hiding and keeping a secret from Joe and all her friends.. She thinks that if anyone finds out they will not like her. What will she do, where will she go , she loves Joe, her desert land ,and all her animals. Is the falling rock and plane going down on her desert have anything to do with her? you really need to read Deadly Sands , it will keep you laughing and sometimes saying OH NO.I was given a copy of this book to read for my honest review , which I have given.

Marty Barr takes care of injured and sick animals. She’s got quite the collection, from Bob the Bobcat to Tito the Javelina. For years she’s run the place with the help of her boyfriend Joe, a Native American veterinarian who is also vegetarian. Marty is trying hard not to think of things she misses since she joined Joe in the vegetarian lifestyle. It’s kind of hard to do though when every time she turns around, her quirky assistant, Lucille, is pulling some kind of meat to munch on out of her pockets. Lucille was quirky enough without the meat fetish, but it was quite amazing the things that girl kept in her pockets. And as quirky as she was, there was the perfect finance for her in Ficky. The plans for their wedding were quite unique. When a rock and plane fall from the sky, life suddenly gets a little crazier. People are shooting at them, ransacking the place, and keeping their connection to the local law enforcement office steady. Even the tourists coming for an overnight tour of the place get crazy, including the little boy that wants to find aliens from Mars.Dana Mentink wrote quite a humorous story, but also had a good little mystery running through it, with a side of romance. I was quite entertained. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that it was written in first person so that took a bit to get used to.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This was good, but not really my type as it had ... By nicolmom This was good, but not really my type as it had an odd humor (to me anyway). The character Lucille and her fiance actually reminded me of the Beverly Hillbillies characters and that is a form of comedy. I prefer suspense and though this had mystery, it wasn't very suspenseful due to the way it was written.I did enjoy Joe Hala's character as he portrayed a solid, Christian man there to help those that needed the help. Marty the main character had some strange thoughts that made it hard for me to connect with her such as "I came close to wetting my pants at the sheer follicular drama." and "plane crashing stinker." Her brother summed her up well when he said: "You're an odd little bird, hermanita..." If you enjoy that form of humor, you should read this book!

Dorothy Pengelly lived alone in her remote, dilapidated cottage with only her pets as company. When her old friend, Rose Trevelyan calls round to visit and finds Dorothy dead she is devastated. And when Rose learns that it wasn't a heart attack but a case of suicide her suspicions are immediately roused. Dorothy would never have killed herself - but would anyone else have the motive to murder? Are the valuable paintings hanging on the walls the clue to the mystery? Perhaps Dorothy's avaricious daughter-in-law had a hand in the old lady's death, or maybe it is connected to a visit from a stranger to the local Cornish community earlier in the week? As Rose seeks the truth she begins to realise that some people in this idyllic seaside town have secrets to hide...

Framed in Cornwall (Cornish Mysteries), by Janie Bolitho

From Publishers Weekly The ordinary lives of the long-term, year-round residents of declining far-from-London Cornwall stand out in this weakly plotted mystery by British author Bolitho (Snapped in Cornwall; Plotted in Cornwall; etc.). The author is at her best looking into her characters' hearts, examining their private victories and failings, their frustrated hopes and sordid secrets, amid the alternately harsh and fine weather and spectacular scenery close to Land's End. Artist and photographer Rose Trevelyan's elderly friend, Dorothy Pengelly, lives alone in a remote house with her dog and cat. When Dorothy dies, the police conclude it's a case of suicide, but Rose suspects that someone may have murdered the woman for her valuable paintings and furniture. When Rose's sometime lover, Detective Inspector Jack Pearce, takes her misgivings seriously and investigates, he discovers mysteries in the backgrounds of several local citizens, including Dorothy's sons. One son has dropped out of society, while the avaricious wife of another son has caused him to cease seeing his mother. Then Rose starts receiving threatening phone calls. None of this is terribly exciting, but then the author's strengths lie elsewhere. Readers will come away with insights into the variety of ways the people of Penzance and St. Ives talk, think and relate to one another from Bolitho's portrait of an area of England that has a long and honorable tradition as a potent setting.

Lovely book set in Cornwall By Laurie Fletcher These little books by Janie Bolitho are not going to win awards, but she paints a portrait of a likeable, middle-aged lady who is also quite an interesting character in the context of these stories. I think I like her because her choice of subject is usually counter to the usual mystery fodder and also because her characterization of the Cornish locals in her stories is so lovingly drawn. These won't keep you awake at night, rethinking the story line and wondering "who", but you also won't look back at these as anything less than the good use of an afternoon or two.

Piscturesque novel By Srdjan Pesic Late Janie Bolitho belonged to a esteemed group of British mystery writers, who through years produced solid and enjoyable books. Her efforts didn't earn awards or the recomendations of snobby critics. What they managed to do, time after time, is to give pleasure to numerous readers. Her series, set in picturesque Cornwall is full of delightful descriptions and colorful characters. This novel is an unashamed cozy with an oldfashioned feel. The, far too early dead author and the books that people don't write anymore. More is the pity.

Winner: Best Creative Debut, University of Johannesburg, 2012. Shortlisted for SALA First Time Published Author Award. Finalist in Gival Press Novel Award. Fate has it in for Alice Wolfe. Not only has she lost her dog, her fiancé and a finger, but she’s about to lose her freedom. Following a mysterious car accident on Table Mountain, Cape Town, in which Alice’s brother’s beautiful, superficial fiancée is killed, Alice is arrested. As the trial hurtles towards her, Alice interrogates her past. Is fate really out to get her or could the bitter sibling rivalry between her and her brother have culminated in this chilling tragedy? Little does she know that the key to unravelling her past lies in an exposing novella The Sea of Wise Insects which her enigmatic ex, Ralph, published under a pseudonym after he did the dirty and disappeared on her. “Zany, richly textured and bizarrely believable, Westby-Nunn’s novel prompts the reader to think afresh about what it is to commit a crime against another human being. The three-part narrative structure of The Sea of Wise Insects is inspired. A consummate debut.” – Jane Rosenthal, Mail & Guardian With its self-conscious study of story-craft, The Sea of Wise Insects ultimately reads as an idiosyncratic South African gothic novel; it encompasses the stories we tell ourselves in order to make sense of the cards life deals out to us. The novel serves as a timely reminder of an assertion once made by Michel de Montaigne, that “[n]othing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it”. Reading Westby-Nunn’s debut is a haunting, rewarding experience that few will forget. - Jonathan Amid, Slipnet

It captured me from beginning to end, the South African and London settings really took me there; plus, the book-within-the-book works exceptionally well to unveil the story in ways of both confirming and rendering the narrator's version intriguingly unreliable. Can't wait to tell my friends and family about this book.

Bloodletting is one of the oldest medical practices, having been practiced since ancient times, including the Mesopotamians, the Greeks, the Mayans, and the Aztecs. In Greece, bloodletting was standard practice around the time of Hippocrates and Herophilos. Herophilos (335-280 BC) was a Greek physician who was the first scientist to systematically perform scientific dissections of human cadavers and is deemed to be the first anatomist. Hippocrates of Cos (460BC-370BC) was also a Greek physician and is referred to as the “father of medicine”. He was the first physician to reject superstitions, legends and beliefs that credited supernatural or divine forces causing illness. In the Act of June 28, 2004, the Food and Drug administration (FDA) cleared for the first time the commercial marketing of Medicinal Leeches for medicinal purposes. Today the rest of the world is catching on as leeches are on the cusp of not only enjoying a revival for known health benefits, but there are constant new discoveries based on thorough medical research about positive effects of the substances produced by medicinal leeches, that are later induced by leeches into human body (and/or animals as well!) during the hirudotherapy treatments. This book traces the use of leeches for bloodletting therapy from ancient Greek times to the Chapin Harris era in the 1840s to modern day usage by plastic surgeons. The leech is described as both a parasite and a therapeutic agent. In this book author comprises the possible indications of leech therapy along with procedures, safety concerns, historical perspective, surgical operative standards, and contraindication of the same described in traditional system of medicine.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Firebird - Intrigue in the world of fusion energy research By Portavoce Fireball, a new novel by author/cosmologist Tony Rothman, takes place in the world of magnetic fusion energy research - where scientists and engineers labor to provide humanity with a safe, inexhaustible form of nuclear energy. Fusion is considered by some to be the greatest scientific and technological challenge undertaken by humanity. As a youngster, Rothman spent a substantial amount of time hanging around his father's workplace, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, one of the world's leading magnetic fusion labs. The author also spent time there as an adult leading to his writing Firebird. This, coupled with his education as physicist, has enabled him to portray an accurate picture of the climate, subculture, science and technology of fusion. In existing nuclear power plants, electricity is produced by the splitting of uranium or plutonium atoms, a process known as fission, with its downside of catastrophic meltdowns (Chernobyl), and its extensive release of long-lived radioactive materials (Fukushima). Fusion, the joining of hydrogen atoms, could provide abundant, everlasting energy, without these problems. In Fireball the action surrounds a fictitious magnetic fusion experiment, Prometheus, built in Texas with private funding. It's a large complex, tokamak-type device that employs magnetic fields to confine a hot ionized gas, plasma - the fusion fuel - comprised of deuterium and tritium, the heavy isotopes hydrogen.Large fusion facilities run in the billions of dollars, so only governments can afford to build and operate them. Generous corporate dollars for fusion is only a pipe-dream for real-world fusioneers, but in Firebird it is reality for the Controlled Fusion Research Center (CFRC) in Austin, Texas. With support from a consortium of private sources, their Prometheus tokamak was built to challenge a device called ITER in a race to achieve ignition, a self-sustained plasma -- the holy grail of fusion power. The ITER tokamak is a real-world fusion experiment now under construction at Cadarache, France with billions in funding from a consortium of governments. The lion's share of ITER's funding is coming from Europe, so portraying it as a European device is not unreasonable. As Firebird unfolds, we are introduced to a cast of scientists and others with vagaries not unlike some of the individuals found working in large scientific facilities. Accurately, one of Rothman's characters describes a tokamak as "a device too complex to allow you to make it into a sensible whole." Throughout the novel, the author employs his first-hand knowledge of the myriad of subsystems essential to the operation of a real tokamak. Beyond this, readers familiar with the history of the U.S. magnetic fusion program will no doubt enjoy references to many real events thrown in by Rothman during the story, including the extraordinary worldwide hoopla over the 1989 Cold Fusion claims.Early on we are introduced to the main characters of Firebird, the lanky CFRC physicist Nathaniel Machuzak and his cohort, Yaroslav Archangelsky, with a beard and bedraggled hair worthy of Rasputin. Mac and Slava are embroiled in a series of attempts to sabotage Prometheus, allowing ITER to snatch the ignition prize. Mac and other CFRC staff have serious doubts regarding Prometheus'ability to reach ignition. Added to their troubles is an ultimatum from the mysteriously androgynous Moravec, the head of GlobeTex, CFRC's principal investor. Moravec's primary interests are wind, solar and bio. In a nutshell, he demands "that they achieve the most difficult technological feat ever attempted by the human race, a task so intractable that it had eluded fusioneers worldwide for eighty years - and that they do it in six months with a machine that might not be capable of it. With a loose saboteur thrown in for good measure."The pressure on Machuzak is heightened when he is appointed acting director of CFRC replacing the founding director, Leonard Rasmussen, who has, over time, taken mysteriously ill. Mac's new role greatly offends the Lab's deputy director, the aggressive, dictatorial Cyrus Krieg-Zuber, who was injured in a lab accident later deemed sabotage.Early on, into all this trouble comes a young, colorful, lady police officer T.J. D'Abro. To Mac, at first site, "she might have been Sally Skull or Calamity Jane walkin the streets of the old west." Determined to nab the saboteur at all costs, D"Abro is convinced at one point that Mac and his buddy Slava are the culprits. Besides being highly entertaining and engrossing, Firebird is unique in its effective marriage of fiction with the accurate ambience of a real scientific laboratory. This is undoubtedly attributable to the author's real world experiences, his passion for science and his ability to both amuse and inform his readers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Exciting Read By TW Science is not as pristine as people might believe in this bold, dynamically written thriller set in a fusion lab. Fascinating and frightening that though it's fiction, it may not be so fictitious. The stuff that goes on. . . You start out thinking it's political or corporate greed or competition with ITER, but it becomes more internal. The real reason for the sabotage? Hard to read because you don't want to know it runs that deep, yet hard to put down because maybe it really does.Enough scientific detail to satisfy science addicts and enough politics to disgust everybody.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well done! By Terry Rizzo This is a fascinating book on at least two levels. It's a well interweaved mix of "who done it" with "what if". It has all the twists and turns you would expect from a good mystery. Plus it's a fast paced, easy to read story of amazing science - amazing in that almost all of it is real and the rest of it is very close to being real. It reminds me of the way Asimov mixed mystery and science in "The Robots of Dawn". Definitely good for a summer reading list.

I don't know where she comes up with these ideas for her writing - she is brilliant! All characters were very likable and the romance wasn't so over the top that it took control of the book. I guess the only thing I could have wished for is another book! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading..you just won't be disappointed. I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review.

By Vee Ess Firstly, I object to this marketing ploy, where readers have to purchase further books in order to reach any kind of ending. This 'bundle' comprises a number of chapters or episodes, leading the reader nowhere. In a good trilogy or series, each book has a reasonably satisfying conclusion but good writing, a good plot, or a compelling character creates the desire to read more.Secondly, I'm surprised that the poor grammar and the protagonist's immature asides have not been mentioned in previous reviews. I wanted to read to the end but the errors and inane musings caused me to wince regularly and I had to force myself to continue. I would quite like to know how the story ends but I cannot bring myself to buy any further 'bundles'.

After finding her husband brutally murdered and being side lined from the investigation by her boss Gabi decides to take matters of revenge into her own hands. She sets off for the place she believes will be the center of the investigation. Throughout this first episode you see Gabi coping and making discoveries about the place she once worked. All leading to a pretty big ending and leaving you wanting to read the next episode! I recommend Girl Undercover: Mystery Man, you won't be disappointed! I cannot wait for the next book!

A Traveler's Mystery Series By Roger Kopman What a great find!!As a mystery reader who loves to travel, this series is perfect. From Greece and France to London and New York, this writer mixes a good mystery storywith the sights and sounds of far-off places. And best yet, we don't have to wait for a year for the author to produce the next volume. The series has been issued in it's entirety - seven volumes to enjoy a traveling mystery.I can hardly wait for my next vacation to bring one along.

The Resurrection of Golden Age Mystery By James Bojaciuk (A spoiler-free review.)The genre has decayed.Since the 1970s, when Agatha Christie breathed her last and one half of Ellery Queen's soul went the same way as Solar Pons' creator, the mystery genre has been on a downward trend. Mystery novels grow fatter as the plots grow thinner--and gone are the classic detectives, and cases that turn on logic and clues rather than gore.In Badge City: Notches, M.H. Norris does much to overturn these trends. Instead of a 100 page mystery spread out over the length of a phone book, we have a plot perfectly suited to its length. Norris, refreshingly, follows the dictums of Golden Age mystery: A) She plays fair with the reader. Though, at times, one wishes for a greater pool of suspects...Norris uses her pool to build into a perfectly realized twist of the knife which would do Christie proud. If you pay careful attention, and aren't one to get hung up on well-placed red herrings, you just might realize who the killer is before Detective Torando. B) The character work is secondary to the mystery. In recent years, I've read a number of bestselling mysteries that have--and I counted the pages--50 pages of plot to 200 pages of backstory, character development, and long musings on baseball or music. What we've been inflicted with are short stories let to grow wild, like mushrooms, until the central stem can no longer support them. Norris wisely avoids this, and it comes across like a sea breezeNorris' research into real-life police procedure and abnormal psychology come off the page, and are treated very engagingly. I'm from a family of cops. You get used to authors blundering about, making up every form of insane crap, then championing their own "research." Aside from some foibles with the climax, she has a wholly realistic police force. Bravo! The dialogue is flawless and the characters engaging. I wish there had been a mite more descriptive prose, but I'm a Victorian in a world of Tweets (and should probably be ignored). The only thing I find to trip over is that, in the storm of corpses, it can be easy to lose track of which corpse is which. To be fair, I imagine the police feel similarly, so even if this was unintentional it does support the theme and progression of the book.Frankly, what issues I personally had shoved aside, this is one of the best modern mysteries I've read. And, certainly, the best I've found thus far into 2015. Let us raise a glass to Norris, and that she may help to usher in another Golden Age!M.H. Norris, if you're reading this, I'm already impatient for the sequel.(Full Disclosure: I edited this book for Pro Se Productions, but receive no remuneration of any kind for either my edit, sales, or this review.)

The Deaths of Innocents By Raven Book Review: Saturday, April 4, 2015Badge City: Notches by MH NorrisAs a reviewer, I have sometimes had to put the best spin on a bad review that I can. But if I am critical when a book lets me down; I am not stingy with praise when it is excellent. And this book certainly falls into the latter category.Since I want this to be a major point for this book, I will bring it up at once. This is a sad but exciting murder mystery. Yet I do not believe I found a single use of profanity or innuendo in the entire novel! This proves that a murder mystery need not be full of foul language and suggestions to make for an excellent read. MH Norris has managed to weave a tapestry of murder and intrigue without having to insert anything that a young adult shouldn’t read. The heroine of the story, Detective Deidre Tordano, works homicide in Badge City, California. She is a wife, a mother of four, and well connected to the city through church, schools, and children’s sports. Now she faces one of the worst cases of her career. It began with the discovery of the body of a ten-year-old girl in Coal Hill Park. The child has died from exsanguination by way of notches cut into her arm. There are seven of them, plenty deep enough to reach the arteries, but there is no blood at the scene. The child’s body is covered in an adult sized pink jacket. By tracing the last sighting of the child, they find she was taken from inside the Westlake Rec Center. Having early soccer practice, the child had went inside to do homework while waiting on a ride from her grandparents. There is a number 6 carved into the desk where she sat, colored red with magic marker.Never an easy job, Detective Tordano has to inform little Grace Miller’s parents that she won’t be coming home. But the nightmare is only beginning. Soon there are reports of other girls the same age and also soccer players going missing. And one by one they are found—always covered with something as if the unsub was showing remorse, all having bleed out from notches carved into their arms. The notches vary greatly in number, and there is always a carved number colored red by magic marker in the place where the child was abducted. The cases pile up— Jessie Phillips. Emily Lee. Katelyn Summers. Natalie Parks. With five dead girls and no viable suspects, Detective Tordano wonders if it will ever end. Tordano’s own daughter Lilly is also ten years old and plays on one of the soccer teams. So far each murdered girl has been from different teams, but Lilly’s team is one of the few left who do not have a missing child.Deidre consults with a young woman who helps to run the Rec Center, Alexandria "Lexi" Lestrade. There she learns some more disturbing news. Not only are ten year old girls being murdered, but ten years ago Lexi had been raped by the Mayor of Badge City’s son, Steven Richards. Richards was never prosecuted for the rape, as the Mayor had influenced Tordano’s father, then a Homicide Detective nearing retirement to hush the thing up.Lexi had a girl from the rape whom she allowed to be adopted as a baby under the Mayor’s insistence. The Mayor paid for Lexi’s collage and made sure she got the job at the Rec Center to keep quiet. The girl would now be ten years old…The mystery builds nicely, as the Homicide Squad begins to make sense of the numbers and notches. But who is there to suspect? And how many more girls will have to die before the killer is caught? A specialty knife has been identified as the weapon used, but where is the scene of the actual murders?I think MH Norris does an outstanding job of laying down clues, utilizing deduction, and describing each and every scene in vivid color as Detective Deidre Tordano brings the case to a successful close. The body count has gone up, but the unsub has finally made an error the law can use. I give the book five stars out of five.Quoth the Raven…The Deaths of Innocents

Norris' work is totally refreshing amidst way too many mystery novels so burdened with useless info that I put them down from boredom. This author's slick interweaving of details complements the fast pace! The unfolding storyline is shocking, extraordinary & creates heavy suspense. I was surprised that I couldn't set the book aside, but rather I had to read it to completion! Cleanly written, the story maintains a realistic depiction of the detective's family and work life. A highly captivating mystery!Question: Has Prose press contracted with MH Norris to write a sequel? I really want to know what Deirdre Tordano tackles next!!!
