Read Ebook PTSD Road to Recovery: One Soldiers Story, by Bob Bray

Most books on PTSD are dry, clinical, and impersonal  no matter how sympathetic they are to the sufferers. Not so with this challenging book!

Author Bob Bray has walked an exhausting pathway, dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in his own life. Obviously, PTSD has been around for a long while. It has existed under names such as battle fatigue, shell shock, or the soldier's disease.

Today, that notion has expanded beyond the battlefields where weapons are used to destroy enemies. Now it refers to the emotional trauma experienced when people are exposed to horrific situations beyond their ability to understand or explain to themselves. It comes with hurricanes, forest fires, floods, and terrorist attacks like the Boston bombing. This book is unique in that it describes more than the outward observations of physicians and researchers. It is a view from the inside of someone who has been overwhelmed, survived, and now has begun to thrive after PTSD.

The author is a compelling writer pouring out the inner struggles and outward consequences that come from those who have lived through the horrors of warfare. To them, all too frequently, they come home but the battle isn't over.

Author Bob Bray shows remarkable transparency in his record of a painful journey toward recovery from PTSD - including significant self-discovery in the process. His writing is easy to read and understand. It point

s toward a more hopeful future for others who are still seeking solutions for their own struggles with this condition.

Getting out of the vicious circle of addiction, violence and loneliness By Helpful Advice “PTSD Road to Recovery: One Soldiers Story” written by Bob Bray is, in same time, touching and educating reading experience. Unfortunately, the author had chance to experience from own perspective how it feels to be affected by PTSD, but with a lot of strength he managed to eventually find the exit. Therefore his book will be of great help for many individuals and families around the world dealing with same problem – the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).Unfortunately we still did not manage to stop the wars and violence on our planet - indeed it seems as though there is more and more terror everywhere. Therefore many men and women have to exchange their usual normal lives with war fighting. But that is only the part of the problem because thousands of them are returning home, having trouble to readjust to normal, civilian life. It is difficult when those people are living alone, but even bigger issue arises when they are parents, sons or daughters, husbands and wives and people around them simply cannot understand what happened to their beloved persons after they came back home – once smiling and happy, now they're lonely or angry, having problem with alcohol or even drugs, capable to become violent or explode at the slightest error. On the other hand, lots of people didn’t need to go anywhere to become part of violent events – the terrorist attacks or natural catastrophes are happening all around us.Bob Bray also had similar story – after spending some time in army, he experienced lot of personal trauma. And though Bob thought he will manage to endure and eventually get rid of problems, the number of issues and conflicts in his life were getting greater. Eventually he became friend with special person that gave him support and helped him to overcome painful memories and addictiveness. They began working together from the common belief that certain types of people were prone to problems such as addiction and stress-related problems – but still they can learn how to deal with stress and fight back the painful memories. Finally, that was Bob’s exit from the hell he found himself in.“PTSD Road to Recovery: One Soldiers Story” is a both educating book and personal insight into PTSD – a well-made brave book for those that have problems and their beloved ones to learn how to give them support. But also this is a book that gives hope and strength to families who are facing similar PTSD problems, making Bob Bray’s personal story an example how still it is possible to get out of this vicious circle of addiction, violence and loneliness.I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.

In his book, PTSD Road to Recovery One Soldiers Story, Bob Bray invites the reader into his frank and open world.Written in a stream-of-consciousness manner, the story told has its moments that may be triggering for some. Memories of childhood coupled with personal disclosures provide the reader a more personal account than most of us ever get to see.As Bray shares his journey, he focuses on his own experiences with ADD, AA and the aftermath of being not only a soldier but also a police officer. Both jobs put him in a unique place to give us insight where few layperson ever get to go.When Bray talks about the fact that military training teaches all of the important survival techniques, he speaks from experience. When he shares the revelation that the military does not teach their warriors how not to live that life after they finish their tours, that is something we really need to consider in how we help and live with our service people. If you want to understand some of what our soldiers deal with, read the book. If you are a fellow warrior who can’t quite understand why things are so difficult, read the book. Bray offers a few items of help and points in a direction for possible assistance. What I find is that many times, just knowing you’re not alone and that someone else has walked the path before you and made it out the other side intact, is a great comfort.

He was behaving strangely at different times and we didn't understand what was happening. He went for counselling and was diagnosed with this illness. This book brings understanding and the struggles our vets deal with after war. Wounded warriors are not just our soldiers who lose a limb but those who struggle mentally as well. Their scars are much deeper than most of us are aware of. This soldier is a brave man to share his story which so many suffering keep hidden. He has helped me understand more about PTSD. I will also take this opportunity to thank all men and women who have served our country.

Gideon's Sword (Gideon Crew series), by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

From Booklist Gideon Crew, the hero of Preston and Child’s new novel, has a complicated backstory. As a boy, he watched as his father, who had taken a man hostage, was shot down by a sniper. Less than a decade later, he learned from his mother that his father had been used by the U.S. government as a scapegoat for a failed intelligence project. After dispatching the man responsible for his father’s murder, Gideon is offered a job with a private contractor that does hush-hush work for the government. Gideon’s mission: to intercept a Chinese scientist and relieve him of the plans for a top-secret weapon. The mission doesn’t go as drawn, however, and Gideon is left with a mysterious string of numbers. Now, working mostly alone, he must determine what the numbers mean. This novel (which is apparently the first installment in a new series) isn’t as elegantly written or constructed as the authors’ popular Special Agent Pendergast novels, but it does—once you get past the backstory—hold the reader’s interest, and Gideon is undeniably a big-shouldered character, capable of supporting a series. --David Pitt

Review "A rollicking tour-de-force. The eponymous Gideon Crew would be equally comfortable smack in a Ludlum tempest or striding onto the set of the Ocean's Eleven franchise. Preston and Child have crafted an electrifying, riveting thriller on which I could continue to heap praise, but instead I will just offer this: Read the book! And we can all look forward to the next appearance of Mr. Gideon Crew in the not-so-distant future."―David Baldacci on Gideon's Sword"Fast-paced and action-packed, Gideon's Sword is a clever, high velocity read."―Kathy Reichs on Gideon's Sword"When you read Preston and Child you know you're in for a thrill ride and that's exactly what Gideon's Sword delivers. They are the antidote for boredom. Hold on tight and let her rip; this ride is worth every penny."―Ted Dekker on Gideon's Sword

About the Author The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Fever Dream, Cold Vengeance, Two Graves, and Gideon's Corpse. In addition to his novels, Preston writes about archaeology for the New Yorker and Smithsonian magazines. I'm a Preston/Child completist (individual novels included). I've been active on their Facebook page, where -- unlike other authors -- they've made it a point to read and respond to as many questions and comments as possible. So I feel a more personal connection to Doug & Linc than I do with any other authors. I wanted so much to love this new character and series.Alas, "Gideon's Sword" is easily the weakest effort of their careers. The whole thing feels "short." Short on substance and, especially, character development. Doug & Linc usually excel at breathing life and depth into their characters. Not here. The CIA agent is the most egregious example. But even Gideon, who benefits from a lengthy back-story which (somewhat awkwardly) opens the novel, just doesn't seem "real" to me.Any novel in this genre requires some Suspension Of (dis)Belief. But this story's "SOB" quotient is off the charts. There's plenty of page-turning action, but the overall experience is unsatisfying. If you're just discovering Preston & Child, DON'T start here. They're much better than this. Here's hoping "Gideon's Sword" is merely an example of the growing pains associated with stepping a bit out of your comfort zone and creating a brand new character and series. I'll sure be rooting like hell that that's the case!P.S. Please IGNORE any of the reviewer comments about the Kindle edition being a "short story." The Kindle edition contains the entire, 352-page novel. It also has a Q&A with the authors followed by a bonus novel from Brad Meltzer. That's why the Kindle says "38% complete" when you get to the end of the novel. It is NOT a "rip-off" by any means. As I mentioned above, "Gideon" FEELS short, but that's a subjective opinion based on content, not actual length.

That just shows how strongly I feel about this book. I have read all the Preston and Child books and many of their individual ones. While some have been better than others at least I got the impression they gave it a good shot and didn't just mail it in for the paycheck. All their books make you suspend logic one way or another, but the amount I had to suspend it in this one was too much. It was just too unbelievable and too many "twists" which could be seen a mile away. And the shortness of it I think just proves that the authors really just wanted to crank something out as fast as possible, probably to satisfy their publishers. Their worst effort by far. Save your money. Even the best have stinkers now and then. Hopefully the next Pendergast will make up for it. If not, it's on to other authors.

It reads like a lackluster movie plot - no real depth, unbelievable twists and turns (like in a bad way), large amounts of suspension of disbelief. It's no wonder it reads like a movie plot... the authors were simply churning out a series to be produced by Michael Bay, who Paramount chose as director of the movies this series has already been purchased for. With all the other Preston and Child books, you have massive story lines all going at once. When you finish a chapter, you enter into another storyline. This wasn't the case with this book. You just keep right on going with the same point of view - exactly like a movie would. It really takes away quite a bit of the suspense.Overall, this is a quick fun read. I hope the next books have a bit more depth than this short story. If you're considering this over another of the duo's work, get the other.

An old case makes Detective Inspector Louisa Smith some new enemies in this spellbinding second installment of New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Haynes’s Briarstone crime series that combines literary suspense and page-turning thrills.

Ten years ago, 15-year-old Scarlett Rainsford vanished while on a family holiday in Greece. Was she abducted, or did she run away from her severely dysfunctional family? Lou Smith worked the case as a police constable, and failing to find Scarlett has been one of the biggest regrets of her career. No one is more shocked than Lou to learn that Scarlett has unexpectedly been found during a Special Branch raid of a brothel in Briarstone.

Lou and her Major Crime team are already stretched working two troubling cases: nineteen-year-old Ian Palmer was found badly beaten; and soon after, bar owner Carl McVey was found half-buried in the woods, his Rolex and money gone. While Lou tries to establish the links between the two cases, DS Sam Hollands works with Special Branch to question Scarlett. What happened to her? Where has she been until now? How did she end up back here? And why is her family—with the exception of her emotionally fragile younger sister, Juliette—less than enthusiastic about her return?

When another brutal assault and homicide are linked to the McVey murder, Lou’s cases collide, and the clues all point in one terrifying direction. As the pressure and the danger mount, it becomes clear that the silent, secretive Scarlett holds the key to everything.

Behind Closed Doors: A Novel (Briarstone), by Elizabeth Haynes

From School Library Journal When a teenager goes missing on a family vacation, the usual questions are raised about whether her disappearance may be due to arguments within the family (running away) or having met a stranger (abduction). With the family of the missing girl being rather close-mouthed about their lives, and the knowledge that she didn't have opportunities to go and meet anyone, the assumption is that she ran away. So when she reappears 10 years later during a raid on a brothel, why won't she tell the police what happened in the intervening years? An even bigger question might be why aren't the family members reuniting now? These are the questions that Detective Louisa Smith hopes to answer, but without much help from either Scarlett or her family. The chapters take place in the present day and through flashbacks, and Scarlett's story and the investigation unfold in surprising ways. The hold human traffickers have on their victims can sometimes trump familial ties, particularly if those ties are frayed from the start. The secrets that the family chooses to keep will shock teens. VERDICT A solid choice for fans of darker mysteries, like those of Carol O'Connell or Gillian Flynn.—Laura Pearle, Miss Porter's School, CT

Review “Harrowing…. Vivid, unsparing prose…. helps make this a haunting, highly disturbing mystery.” (Publishers Weekly)“An involving police procedural with a protagonist who agonizes about maintaining both a committed personal relationship and a demanding career.” (Booklist)“Haynes pulls no punches…. the skillful police work and superb ending make the reading truly worthwhile. Mystery readers will want more Haynes!” (Library Journal)

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. "We are not human anymore. We don't even exist." By E. Bukowsky People often commit unspeakable acts in secret, since they assume that no one knows what goes on "Behind Closed Doors" (Elizabeth Haynes's latest thriller) aside from the abusers and their victims. The author tells the heartbreaking story of fifteen-year-old Scarlett Rainsford, who lives in England with her family. In 2003, Scarlett is on holiday in Rhodes with her parents and thirteen-year-old sister, Juliette. By chance, Scarlett meets a good-looking boy, Nico, and develops a crush on him. She soon fantasizes about running away with Nico (Scarlett loathes her parents), but is reluctant to abandon the emotionally fragile Juliette. Still, she cannot help but dream of a new and happier life than the one she has now.Sadly, our heroine's naiveté with men proves costly. She is abducted and, along with other girls caught up in the net, is forced to do her captors' bidding. After her parents report their daughter's disappearance to the authorities, DCI Louisa Smith and her team of investigators try to pick up Scarlett's trail. Meanwhile, in spite of the humiliation and degradation that she suffers, Scarlett tries to keep her wits about her. Haynes provides relief from all this misery by inserting an engrossing subplot about Lou and her boyfriend Jason Mercer, a police intelligence analyst. We also learn a bit more about the conscientious DS Sam Hollands, whose memories of a past relationship haunt her during this case."Behind Closed Doors" is a suspenseful, involving, and hard-hitting work of fiction that goes back and forth in time and shows events from various perspectives. The portrait of Scarlett is particularly strong; she is courageous and daring, but her impulsiveness and poor judgment land her in deep trouble. There are a number of loathsome villains in this novel, but we do not learn the full extent of their malevolence until the shocking conclusion. Haynes touches on timely and troubling issues, making us wonder: How can we stop the scourge of human trafficking? Can individuals who have been cruelly exploited ever recover? Elizabeth Haynes avoids tying up her plot too neatly. Instead, she offers a disturbing glimpse of how depraved individuals, for pleasure and profit, subjugate vulnerable young women.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is amazing from beginning to end. By Bookreporter I’ve been waiting for this one. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is the follow-up to last year’s UNDER A SILENT MOON. It was with that book that Elizabeth Haynes broke form after a series of stand-alone crime thrillers and began what is now known as the Briarstone crime series. Briarstone is the patch, if you will, of Louisa Smith, who heads up the town’s Major Crime squad. It is evident within the first few pages that this is a book worth waiting for and one that, impossible as it may seem, surpasses its predecessor, which was one of the best mystery novels of 2014.Lou and Major Crime begin BEHIND CLOSED DOORS behind the eight-ball. They are working two disturbing cases consisting of a murder and a brutal assault that may be connected. The murder victim is Carl McVey, a bar owner with some possible ties to the criminal element. His body was discovered partially buried in a wooded area with his valuables gone, apparently taken by his killer. The assault victim is a younger man named Ian Palmer, who also is reputed to be involved with a troubled element. There are few clues in either case, which makes it all the more distressing when one of Lou’s cold cases from a decade ago suddenly rears its head.Fifteen-year-old Scarlett Rainsford had been on a family vacation in Greece when she suddenly vanished. Lou, who was a DC in Major Crime at the time, was charged with investigating the case and flew to Greece, only to run into numerous dead ends, not only from the Greek police but also from the missing girl’s family, whose behavior was considered odd, to say the least. Scarlett was ultimately presumed to be dead, and the case languished. When it is learned in the present that Scarlett is not only alive, but also working in a brothel in Briarstone, the news is electrifying. To make matters more interesting, there appears to be a direct link between Scarlett’s present circumstances and a murder that Lou has been investigating (one that is an unresolved plot thread from UNDER A SILENT MOON). Thanks to some flashbacks that alternate with the narration in the present, the reader learns early on, through information released in excruciating dribs and drabs, how Scarlett happened to go missing. In the present, though, Lou’s colleague, Sam Hollands, attempts to gently coax Scarlett’s story from her. There are many questions to be answered. Where has Scarlett been all this time? Why is the reaction of Scarlett’s parents to her somewhat strange and certainly unexpected return so...unusual? As Lou’s different investigations progress, another violent assault and homicide occur that appear to be tied to the earlier incidents and, against all odds, to Scarlett’s situation as well. As the cases seem to be on an all-but-inevitable collision course, Lou will uncover truths and lies that have lain dormant for years.BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is amazing from beginning to end. I kept waiting for the story to flag or lose energy, or for my jaded self to lose interest. None of that ever happened. Haynes keeps the story complex, but expertly guides readers through the thicket, providing enough revelations to keep everyone happy until the next installment. Jump on this series now, as you will want to catch up with it sooner rather than later.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

Compelling read By Mrs. C reads I enjoyed this second Detective Inspector Louisa Smith book very much but am glad I had read the first one for knowledge of ongoing characters and criminal syndicates. Scarlett's story was compelling--I loved how she never had her spirit broken despite all the terrible things that happened to her--and I hope we might see more of her in the next book.

"an excellent mystery filled with hardship and friendship tested in an impossible situation" By rose My review of a soon to be released novel called "Buried" written by author Mike Evans. This is a thriller/mystery. A police officer who wakes up one day and is thrust into extraordinary circumstances and coerced too break laws he normally enforces for the sake of his loved ones. This is the story about best friends Frank, a police officer and his best friend Earl as they set out to do what they have to do to stop a madman from taking away all they both hold dear. They have to plan a bank heist, work out the details, find decent weapons and obtain the vehicles needed to successfully complete a job they both never asked for. The details the author had to work on, the information gathered and research into the many aspects of robbing a bank was done very well and shows throughout the novel. The human element and friendship displayed between Frank and Earl really was done so well the the author was able to make a dark and dreadful situation seem bearable because of the levity displayed by the two main characters. I just love when an author portrays the bickering, wit and humor that two best friends often display especially at the most unlikely times. The sniffling, cowardly weasel of the bad guy who forced the main character into this impossible situation was very well written. I enjoyed the opening of the story immensely because it set the pace and stage for the rest of the book so well. This is a new genre for a successfully established zompoc/horror writer. Mike Evans is a successful multiple genre author and this novel proves it.

By Denise Keef Imagine one of your worst nightmares coming true and you are a Police Officer having to do things that are against your moral code to get back the one thing you hold most dear to your heart. That is exactly what Frank McPatrick is facing in this engrossing, heart stopping, and epic book by Mike Evans!I absolutely LOVED this story! Once I started reading it was very hard to put down and only did if it was absolutely necessary. The action was described in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat…holding your breath at times, wondering if the outcome will be for the good or the bad! Every character was intricately important to this story and was described in a way that you could picture them in your mind. I totally fell in love with Earl who is Frank’s best buddy in this story and I could so see me hanging out with him. He is a colorful, fun, great guy and friend who has Frank’s back through this entire story! All I can say is…do yourself a favor and get a copy of Buried…sit back in your favorite chair with whatever it is you like to drink and get ready for one heck of an amazing story that keeps you engrossed and entertained and which will stay with you long after that last page is turned!

Mr.Evens is more than likely now on someone's "watch list" for all the research and information he had to have gathered on how to pull off the "Perfect bank robbery." The lead characters in this book complement each other very well. Frank a Police officer he possesses characteristics of a military man, well disciplined, he is a fast thinker and well organized, he processes every action before he acts.He is a serious kind of guy who believes in the law and oath he took to uphold the law, he is likable. His best buddy is Earl is a free spirit, funny, bright and loyal to a fault never stopping to consider the cost to himself for his loyalty, the kind of buddy you would want to have your back and the Godfather to Franks son.Frank thinks of a happier time with his wife and son.His wife is gone, but he will stop at nothing to retrieve his son safely from an unscrupulous man.In order to do this his moral breaking point and will and determination will be tested beyond the limits. Frank has Earl to back him up to the end no matter what happens. This is a story about a how far a man will go to protect the ones he loves, it is about true friendship and the strength of their bond,it is about going against everything you believe in, down to your very core of existence the moral dilemma of breaking all the rules you swore to uphold. Mike Evens has done a tremendous job with this story. The timing was perfect, you had such a clear picture of the places and circumstances he painted with his words and the character's were perfectly imperfect.I became emotionally invested in the outcome early on in this story. You see Frank break down for a moment early on when he has to terrorize an innocent family to gain the father's cooperation. It was something that had to be done in order to save his son. Frank had empathy for that family, because he was innocent too, yet this terrible thing had happened to him and his son.

Comparison of UK and US printing with a clear winner By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:49db5dfb93d2e1f1ce96a12662b7ba99]]I am updating my original review of this book as of 01/07/16. I loved the artwork by Kerby Rosanes but really disliked a good number of things about the printing of the book. I became curious about the UK printing once Amazon merged the books into one item number and reviews for the UK book were consistently higher than those for the US book. I purchased a copy of the UK book to do a side-by-side comparison. I also purchased a second copy of the US version to have a “clean” copy to compare as I had already colored in my first book. I am including a silent video which shows a flip-through of first the UK and then the US version of the book. You may notice that I have some problems paging through the second, US version. It is because the pages are so thin, it is hard to just turn one page instead of several. Also, my photos will show a comparison of the books. The UK book is to the left or to the top of the photo as applicable. The clear winner in all categories is the UK printing of the book. The sad thing is that the follow-up to this book “Imagimorphia” is being printed by the same US company (Plume). Keeping the adage of “fool me once” in mind, I will be buying the UK version of the second book rather than the US one. I still rate the book as 4 star on the basis of the UK version (which is also included for sale in this SKU.) The US version drops in comparison to a 2.5 star. I highly recommend spending the little bit extra and waiting a little while longer to get the UK version shipped to you. Here is the data I used to come to that conclusion:1. Size and Weight – approximate and listed in similar measurements for consistency and ease of comparison:UK Version: 9 14/16 x 9 13/16 x 6/16 inches – weight 1.03 pounds (16.48 ounces)US Version: 9 15/16 x 10 x 4/16 inches – weight .68 pounds (10.88 ounces)The UK printing is slightly smaller but is thicker and weighs more (a whopping 1.5 times the weight of the US printing) which equates into a much heavier weight of paper used for the book.2. Cover: The UK version has a thicker cover. It has a matte black background with the tiger in a glossy print that really stands out. The words are slightly different on the front and the back wording is quite different. The orange tone for the wording is a deeper and richer color than that on the US printing. The US cover is thinner and is a semi-gloss. The orange used on the words is more of a fluorescent color. I've included a picture which shows the UK version on the left and the US on the right.3. Paper Quality: Here is a huge difference. The UK version has a nice heavyweight paper that doesn't crease easily and which does not show through the printing from the back of the page. The US version creases easily just from trying to turn the page and you can see the reverse print through on the page.4. Binding: The UK version is sewn rather than glued. It is sewn in every few pages so you can remove that group with a few snips of thread. The US version is an odd hybrid. It is sewn in with multiple threads – but the threads go through the entire book and are spaced very close together. Cutting these could be a chore. The US version is also glued together. There are a number of pages where the glue extends onto the page and you lose parts of the design whether you remove the pages or not.5. Print Quality: The designs are printed on both sides of the page and most spread across two pages. The designs merge into the binding and in some cases, with both printings, the two sides are slightly offset. I found that this occurred more in the US version and that the offset portion was more pronounced. Additionally, there is a weird area of white between the two-page spreads on the US version. It appears that they didn't print the entire image and just stopped at a certain point before the binding, i.e., you will never get to color the whole image because it was not included plus you get the weird dead white space in the middle of your book. I've included pictures which show the the problems with the US version - dead white area in the middle at the binding, some where you can see that the pages are glued together and you lose some of the image and finally, some where the images where offset to the right. In these pictures, the UK version is at the top of the photo and the US version is at the bottom. The UK version has a crisper look to the printing. That may be a better quality ink or just what happens with a better quality paper. I've included a picture of the title page with the UK version on the left and the US version on the right. Obviously, the US version chose to use a lighter ink for the title but there is a difference in the rest of the print ink, too. Also, while the US book is bigger, many of the images have portions of the sides and top and bottom missing. It appears that they enlarged the images. In some cases, they offset the images, too. There is a picture of a whale where the image has been shifted to the right, leaving dead space in the left side of the two pages and losing elements from the right side. Odd, to say the least.6. Coloring Medium:I will list the coloring medium I tested below. I am now testing a much larger group of pens/pencils than I did in my previous review. All alcohol-based markers bled through the pages of both books immediately and to the same degree. The only water-based marker that did not bleed through was my TomBow with the brush end. If I used the marker end, it bled through, too. The US version showed more ink leakage than did the UK but they both did show some.My gel pens with the larger points showed a shadow through on the US version when I used bright or dark colors. This did not happen with the UK version. None of the smaller point gel pens showed through on either version (Uni-ball Signo – my new favorite for detail work.) The gel pens did require a little more drying time on the UK version – this is something I have seen with better quality paper. As the ink is not seeping into the paper, it sits on top and has to dry for a minute or two longer. There was a distinct difference in how coloring pencils worked with these books. The UK version took the soft core colors beautifully and the hard core pencils did not made indents that could be seen from the back of the page. The US version did okay with the soft core (but not as creamy or as good coverage.) The hard core pencils left distinct indents on the back of the page. These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:Markers: 1) alcohol-based – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) and 2) water-based – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, Staedler triplus fineliners, and Pentel markersGel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo 0.38/0.28 and TekwriterColoring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, and Faber-Castel Polychromos

The quality of the paper in this AMERICAN version is awful and extremely disappointing. The fact that I waited for about 2 months for the American release of this book, only to get it and see how thin the paper was, was even more disappointing. After hearing how the other versions of this book were better in other countries, I ended up ordering another copy of this book (ISBN 978-1-910552-07-0) from London for $10.43 (free shipping). The European release of this book is both thicker and heaver. The American version weighs in at 10.8oz vs the European version weighing in at a whopping 16.5oz.

By badkittym Brand new to the world of 'adult coloring' and colored pencils, this was the first book I purchased, along with a set of prismacolors. To make a long story short: WOW! Terrific drawings for the most part, with a few caveats - as an artist myself, I would much rather have spent a few dollars more, and received fold-out pages for the facing page drawings. It is impossible to color in the seam, even after "breaking" the book's spine. I also agree, that the partially finished drawings are a disappointment, as are the printed directives: this is supposed to be for adults, yes? Why then talk down at your fan base, as though they are children? I very much like that other than the little character doodles that fill space, the animal drawings are very realistic and also leave a great deal of room to be creative with your colors, instead of simply filling in tiny areas and lines. Excellent scale and depth, as well.So far I have completed two pages, and am about 3/4 finished on another. I'm very much enjoying this book, and really wish I could give it five stars.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A FIRST NOVEL TO TREASURE By Joseph Saltzman A nicely written first novel that creates a hero that should up nicely for future novels in this series. Liam Sol is familiar as a man thrown into a mystery without planning for it, but Burgess creates a unique character for the genre, that you'll want to spend some time with.Anyone who wants to remember the 1960s in a fresh way, anyone who remembers the days of the perfect wave in the Southern California sunshine, anyone who likes a good mystery with a twist -- this is the book for you.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Debut Novel! By Keith Tittle Timothy Burgess has given mystery readers a wonderful first novel, with rich characters and vivid detail. While the book is set amidst the California surf culture of the late 60's and beautifully captures the period when tradition collided with counter-culture, the author's writing style evokes memories of the classic mysteries of the 30's and 40's. A terrific read, and I'm looking forward to the next of what I hope will be a long and successful series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. THE MIND'S EYE By Chris Tombrello Although I am a mystery novel fan, I am even more of a "mystery of consciousness" fan. This immersive novel is written in the first person, a style that generally involves a heightened level of confessional or contemplative self-examination. A first person narrative lends itself to the great "Noir" tradition in fiction and film. The style also allows us to participate directly in the adventure, Liam Sol becomes our reality filter. Liam Sol presents a satisfying level of self-knowledge, enhanced it seems by the Zen characteristics of wave riding. He is youthful in terms of his inter-personal relationships and more prescient and philosophical in terms of sunlight, water and very particularly: hot dry winds invading Los Angeles from the deserts of the north-east. The wind imagery is probably the prime hypnotic element in this tale and heightens the three-dimensionality of the narrative construct. But Liam, child of the elements, knows more about the pulse of nature than the devious minds of man. Liam and his closest friends are 1960s spawned optimists surrounded by Machiavellian holdovers of a dark yet lingering age of bald self-interest. A spiritual alignment can be found in the movie "Chinatown" by Roman Polanski set in the 1930s, but it is worth noting that Tim Burgess has aptly recreated 1968 Southern California and folks who were listening to KRLA on the radio that year will enjoy the verisimilitude. Are the good people of Los Angeles forever manipulated by the criminal designs of uber-capitalists? Probably so but this review is an exercise in "deconstruction" not a Marxist indictment. The big remaining question is how Liam Sol's philosophical consciousness will develop going forward. ---And that is why Tim Burgess fans are universally anticipating BOOK 2!

Review Go to this link to read a very studied review of Murder on Sagebrush Lane. This woman posts her reviews a couple of times a week, and she's very thorough and thoughtful. amberfoxxmysteries.wordpress.com/2015/08/21/a-new-mexico-mystery-review-murder-on-sagebrush-lane/

From the Inside Flap "Pat Wood's Murder on Sagebrush Lane catches you from the opening moment. Other mysteries may begin with a body, but this body isn't who we think it is. And the blood-stained 'orphan' we meet turns out to have guardians, and a birth mother using two (or more) names. All of these characters are caught in an intriguing web of concealed motives, puzzled out by Albuquerque police officers, FBI agents, at least two amateur sleuths, Sandia Laboratories scientists, and . . . but any more detail would require a 'spoiler alert.' Quick, colorful dialog draws through the excitement as eavesdroppers hearing these characters reveal themselves. This Albuquerque is as rich in its way as Breaking Bad, with recognizable neighborhoods, specific intersections, even a restaurant you'll want to visit . . . as Wood obviously has done. Like the book? You bet! It makes you want to read her others, already in print, or on the way." Richard E. Peck, author of Dean Pawn and Something for Joey.

From the Back Cover "Murder on Sagebrush Lane is a mystery that takes the reader on a journey filled with tension and suspense. From the first page, the author engages you in a way that will make you beg for more and keep you up at night. This is Patricia Wood's best book yet. Highly recommended." Joseph Badal, author of the Tony Hillerman Prize-Winning Ultimate Betrayal.

The author gets too bogged down with mundane dialogue, and it makes the flow of the book, the story line, etc, less intense. I wanted to skip some pages so I could more 'meat' of the story. Some of the characters are less than believable.

Fascinating Read By Margaret I had looked forward to the continuation of the Harrie McKenzie series, and was delighted to find Murder on Sagebrush Lane as enjoyable as Easter Egg Murder.Wood's plot is so intriguing, and the characters so likable, that I find myself caught between wanting to linger over the pages and wanting to see what will happen next. I hope Wood has other books in store for us!

Absolutely loved it and the characters so immediately downloaded this new second installment. Harrie is a lot of fun and along with her lifelong best friend Ginger they become pretty good investigators though they do get themselves into some tight spots. They are helped in all ways by Harries' love interest DJ Scott, who is an FBI agent, and Gingers' lawyer husband Steve, but the ladies' independence and ingenuity are a major factor in solving the crimes. The story lines and murder mysteries in both books are very complex and make for a very interesting and riveting read.I don't go into too much detail in my reviews because I like to find out for myself what the story is all about and a LOT of reviews just tell too much. Just know if you like good clean murder mysteries with wonderful characters you'll love this one. It took 2 years for this second book to come out and I really hope we get a third sooner than that. Excellent writing! Please keep them coming Patricia!

To Sherlock Holmes she will always be The Nun. But is this brilliant young woman carrying on a secret double life – a life far too sensual for a member of a holy order? She is helping archeological excavations at the ruined Abbey of St. Edmund, where a sealed canister has been unearthed. In it is a document that has the potential to change the course of the British Empire and all of Christendom. The Bishop of the Abbey seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes. A few days later he is dead and the Nun has vanished along with the secret document. There are some evil young men who are prepared to rob, and beat, and even commit murder to keep the contents of the ancient charter from ever becoming known. The Nun is determined to use the document to improve the lives of women throughout the world. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are called upon to protect the young woman, catch the killers, and trap the evil men who are greedily plotting against her. The mystery is inspired by the original Sherlock Holmes story, A Scandal in Bohemia as well as the Magna Carta and is tied to some actual historical events of seven hundred years ago – with some imagination added. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will enjoy a new story that maintains all the loved and familiar characters and settings of Victorian England.

A Sandal from East Anglia: A New Sherlock Holmes Mystery (New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries Book 9), by Craig Stephen Copland

About the Author Elementary, my dear reader. What else, after fifty years of enjoying the stories of Sherlock Holmes, is a recently retired gentleman to do with his time but write more stories about the world’s most beloved detective. Craig Stephen Copland confesses that he discovered Sherlock Holmes when, some time in the muddled early 1960s he pinched his older brother’s copy of the immortal stories and was forever afterward thoroughly hooked. He is very grateful to his high school English teachers in Toronto who inculcated in him a love of literature and writing, and even inspired him to be an English major at the University of Toronto. There he was blessed to sit at the feet of both Northrup Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and other great literary professors, who led him to believe that he was called to be a high school English teacher. It was his good fortune to come to his pecuniary senses and abandoned that goal and pursued a varied professional career that took him to over one hundred countries and endless adventures. He considers himself to have been and to continue to be one of the luckiest men on God’s good earth. A few years back he took a step in the direction of Sherlockian studies and joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada—also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014 this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although he had never tried his hand at fiction before, Craig entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience he decided to write more of the same, and is now on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery that is related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon. He currently lives and writes in Toronto, New York, the Okanagan Valley, and Tokyo, and looks forward to finally settling down when he turns ninety.

By NLB Pastiche writing is new to me, but after recently reading author Craig Stephen Copland’s other book, “Studying Scarlet,” I found myself wanting to read another one of his new Sherlock Holmes mysteries. “A Sandal from East Anglia” is set in 1888 Victorian England, and Holmes is hired to retrieve an ancient document discovered in an archaeological excavation…a document that becomes the motive behind theft, deception, and murder. As expected, Holmes impresses everyone with his deductive reasoning, as he cleverly deals with an odd-looking monk, a bishop, and a mysterious and fascinating nun who may just hold the future of women’s equal rights in her hands. The English dialect, as well as the characteristic form of communication between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is fast moving and entertaining. I am rapidly becoming a prodigious fan of this genre. Mr. Copland once again delivers an intriguing story line, interspersed with historical facts of the British Empire and Christendom.

Davis It is a difficult task to take a beloved character of ages past and rewrite his story in a unique and captivating manner, Craig Stephen Copland has accomplished just that. I found A Sandal from East Anglia to be an exciting ‘new’ adventure for an adored character, Sherlock Holmes. Action, mystery and suspense all tied up in a quirky, yet humorous, novel. The biggest surprise for me is the author touches on feminism, which I found refreshing especially for a male author. I was so intrigued by the novel that I purchased another of Mr. Copland’s works, and can’t wait to get started. If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes or just a fan of a solid, cozy mystery, I would highly recommend Craig Stephen Copland’s A New Sherlock Holmes Mystery series.

Tony and Mary Calley had a nine year marriage their friends and neighbors envied. They seemed like the perfect couple, living in the perfect million-dollar house with the perfect son. Tony owned a very successful investment firm and Mary was a main figure in the town’s tennis and parties high- society set. To everyone that knew them, the Calleys were the symbol of wealth and the receivers of the “American Dream”. Yes, they had a life that most of the world would think could never become unraveled. But it did! Tony was a bigtime gambler. He couldn’t hold onto the millions that came in the front door of Burns and Calley Investment. He would bet thousands, or even hundreds of thousands on a single race every day, either from his bookie and or his laptop. He had three mortgages on his house Mary knew nothing about, as he bought the house in his name only, “to use as a work write-off”. She believed him until her credit cards started getting rejected and their bank president contacted her about an overdraft. After confronting Tony on the shortage in their account, he told her it must be a mistake and took care of it by illegally getting a work loan without his partner’s okay. While they were putting on their “we’re very rich show” for the rest of Nashville, they were struggling to pay their bills. Mary threatened Tony with divorce and he promised to stop betting. His secretary retired and in his hunt to replace her, he ends hiring probably the world’s most beautiful redhead. Soon, his financial woes become minor as he starts a relationship with his new girl Friday. He starts working later and later as they use the office as their personal “playpen”. They decide they have to eliminate Mary, and at the same time eliminate all his bills. Tony increases Mary’s life insurance and they cook up a scheme to kill her, which eventually puts her in a coma. Everything seems to be following their script until an unbelievable event takes place. Does Mary have any knowledge of their plans, or even survive the coma? The answer will amaze you. The ending will knock you out. Warning: don’t try any of this at home. It may be deadly!

Damn it, Wake Me Up, by E. G. Lander

About the Author E.G. Lander was born in a tiny spec of a town in northern Minnesota called Deer River. He grew up on a fishing resort his parents owned, telling guests, almost as soon as he could talk, about his family of eight, the woods, the local Chippewa Indians, the lakes and the native game. It was there that he realized he would one day be a storyteller, a writer of what he knew and learned as a youngster. He postponed much of that to raise his own family, and build a career to launch him back into writing. He worked his way through college by writing papers for other students, then graduated with a BA in pre-law and political science. From there he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, becoming a teacher and a facilitator of MCI (the Marine Corps Institute). He got married and became a leader for a national retailer, honing his communication and writing skills with speeches and motivational leadership. But he was always dreaming of writing, especially telling stories about families and their efforts to overcome hardships. E.G. retired early to start that second career- the storytelling one. In the last four years, he has completed four manuscripts, (3 fictional and 1 non-fictional) and he’s working on a fifth one. His first work was What’s in the Rear View Mirror? a 80,000 word saga about a family in South Carolina caught up in murders from 50 years ago that haunt them even today, creating even more murders. It’s was published in May 2014. Next came a 117,000 word story called Damn It, Wake Me Up, the drama of an American family being destroyed by a husband who gambles and cheats on his wife and eventually tries to kill her. However, she doesn’t die from the “perfect murder plan” he and his mistress devise. She ends up in a coma, and that’s where the story really begins. E.G.’s third work is a fantasy entitled The Incredible Bucky Berrot, a beautiful story about a family of birds in Australia and how Bucky changes the way all the residents in Bayberry Hills think about their laws and their enemies, as well as the possibility of God (why can’t a bird believe in God?). This colorful family and community fable was co-authored with E.G.’s grandson (12- year- old Connor) to give a slant of assorted creatures never seen before (60,000 words).

This is an excellent read and was extremely hard to put down. It takes you on a ride and a half. The story captured and held my mind. It was a constant theme that kept me hanging on. The characters were likable, believable, and just broken enough to relate to as a reader. Obviously, this is a writer whose work is not a one time fluke, but one who will grow to be a staple of those who love this kind of writing. I would highly recommend getting a copy of this. Can't wait for his next masterpiece!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Damn It, Wake Me Up," a Twisty Mystery That You Will Enjoy By Marc Stern E.G. Lander is an outstanding author. He proved it in the wonderful children's tale, the "Incredible Bucky Berrot," which he co-authored with his grandson, and "What's In the Rear Mirror," another thriller, published last year. Lander has done it again in the deceptive "Damn It, Wake Me Up." It's a mystery novel with a huge twist that will leave you grinning when you realize that the author has set you up from the moment you begin reading.Ostensibly, "Damn It" is the story of the "perfect family" -- well, perfect on the outside, anyway. There's dad, Tony, the successful investment banker with a knack for making his clients -- and himself -- lots of money. And, there's the beautiful wife, Mary, who simply loves her hubby and their precocious son Connor, who just happens to be the best student in the Rymont, TN, public school system. For years, the Calleys seemed to have the idyllic life. Their life was truly an idyll, in the truest sense of the word. You see an idyll is a tale or fable that shows that heroes have problems too.For the Calleys, the problem was Tony's dark secrets. Tony was a liar and an habitual gambler. He couldn't be one without the other because he not only lied to his wife and his bookie, but he also lied to himself about the strength of his addiction to playing the ponies and puppies. How bad was his problem? Let's see, he took three mortgages out on his house; he'd used up his pay for this month, last month and next month and more. What was the more? Hmm, how about taking a loan from a pawn shop on his new Mercedes? That's a good one, isn't it? It's a good thing he bought the car for cash as he was able to use the vehicle for a $12,000 loan. In turn, he took the loan, and instead of telling his wife the truth, said he earned the money through shrewd investments.Mary, for her part, knew her husband and knew there was something wrong, but just couldn't put her finger on it. On confronting Tony about it, he lied of course and he kept on betting and lying; telling falsehood after falsehood about where the money was coming or going. It got to the point where Mary had to do something, so she called the bank -- a move Tony never thought his beautiful wife would make. He had successfully kept their financial picture from Mary, even with all his bobbing and weaving, and now it was about to unravel especially when he realized he was $62,000 in debt; his bookie had cut him off, and his wife was breathing down his neck. So, what did he do? He not only lied, but he stole from a client, but luckily things worked out -- that time and he escaped. It seemed to Tony that he could do no wrong because he figured he was above being found out. He even began a dalliance with his new secretary and expected his wife to believe that he wasn't involved with anyone, even though there was a ton of evidence to the contrary. Being totally smitten with himself, Tony believed he would escape everything just because he was Tony. Well, maybe he did and maybe he didn't, you will have to read "Damn It" to find out.If you do take the time to read and appreciate this thoroughly enjoyable thriller, you will easily see the immense talent of E.G. Lander. His easy writing style pulls you into the story quickly and before you know it, you just can't put it down, even if you had intended to do so for dinner (you do end up reading at the table). And, say goodbye to sleep until you find out just what happens at the end (there's a mind-blowing twist in the book that will have you doing two things, especially if you appreciate good authorship, grinning and shaking your head thinking "I just didn't see that one coming." Trust me, it's obvious, but, then again, I've finished the novel and you'll have to read it to find it).Lander, who came to writing later in his career, knows how to plot a novel and create three-dimensional characters for whom you feel lots of empathy. He also knows how to play with his plot and he knows that once he has hooked his audience -- baiting his trap, so to speak -- he reels it around as he pleases and delightfully so because you are willing to be led right through to the end. It is an end, that, I will tell you this much, is highly satisfying.Altogether, E.G. Lander has a real hit on his hands with "Damn It, Wake Me Up," one that you can't help but enjoy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. `The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury'- Marcus Aurelius By Grady Harp Minnesota author E.G. Lander has that rare gift to blend a mystery with a respect for interpersonal (especially family) relationships that sets his book WHAT'S IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR? apart. He has always known he was a writer, even though his college studies focused on pre-law and political science. Joining the USMC he served as a teacher and facilitator of the Marine Corps Institute, and upon completing his tenure he moved into the corporate world of retail, specializing in communication and motivation. Now his life long dream of writing has again blossomed with this, his second novel, DAMN IT, WAKE ME UP. The seeds have been well nurtured, as he writes with a fine sense of ingenuity of plot and ability to escort the reader through a maze of twists and turns that make his story a bifurcated tale that comes together in the end. It is the tale of a well-planned murder that reverses - all in the dignity of a perfect little family, perhaps....Lander this time places us in Nashville, Tennessee (and Rymont, TN) where we meet a young, age 30, couple Tony (`a beautiful man with wide muscular shoulders fitting perfectly into his six-foot-two frame. Everything about him was what a woman would call a "hunk," from his baby blue eyes to that wonderfully soft looking dark brown hair) and Mary Calley and their precocious son 9-year-old Connor. For all intents and purposes Tony and Mary remain profoundly in love and lust until little gradual secrets begin to arise. Tony has a gambling problem that started on their trip to Las Vegas some years ago and has move to the horseracing category - big time. Tony owns Burns and Calley Investment firm and manages to hide his increasing debt from gambling for a while - until Mary begins to uncover his/their debt. Tony's beloved long-term secretary Michelle retires and is replaced by the delectably delicious redhead Brenda Jean who has secrets in her own past. Mary increases her nagging at Tony about his gambling, Tony falls for Brenda Jean, nosy obese neighbor Bobbie's eye is a bit too keen and registers some of Tony's and Brenda Jean's consignations, Mary increases her drinking and forgets to take her levothyroxine that keeps her hypothyroidism controlled and that tips Mary into a coma. And idea is born: Bobbie becomes a `no problem', Tony and Brenda Jean attempt to combat Tony's debt and pursue an affair with the plan to substitute Mary's thyroid meds with look-alike OTC stool softeners while increasing Mary's life insurance policy to include triple indemnity in the case of accidental death. It all works according to plan until Mary actually goes into coma, but retaining her ability to hear conversations, and once the coma is resolved Mary carries out her own revenge in a surprising and heart thumping way. And to tell more would be a spoiler.Lander is so smooth that he makes this convoluted tale read like a well-played chess game. His characters leap off the page, the various crimes are completely credible, and in the end we are left with a very satisfying mystery thriller - rich in romance and action. Another very fine novel from E.G. Lander! Grady Harp, May 15
