I have been suffering from excessive sweat ever since I remember. I suffer with excessive sweat on my palms and on my feet and for the longest time I thought that I was alone to be cursed with such a condition. I had no clue that my condition was a common one, with an actual medical term - Hyperhidrosis! That discovery made me feel better in a twisted sense. I was no longer the only person trying to find way out of sweaty palms and feet in a world where everyone else was perfect! I then started my somewhat frustrating journey towards understanding this disease, and more important the various treatment options. I say frustrating because I was still relying on internet as my key source of information and soon discovered that most of internet was full of complex, mostly inaccurate and downright unethically incorrect information to make a quick buck. However, since I was so desperate to find a solution to my sweat condition, I persisted. I read a lot of research articles, met several qualified medical professionals specializing in this field, and interacted with a large number of hyperhidrosis patients. I even ended up setting up the largest online community of hyperhidrosis patients online - http://hyperhidrosisnetwork.com. The site, over a short time-period has become the most popular go to place to find out anything about hyperhidrosis, connect to other patients and to discuss the treatment options. Hyperhidrosis Network As I mentioned previously, I realized that even in this day and age of information accessibility, it was difficult for people with Hyperhidrosis to find real helpful information or to connect to others with the same condition. So, out of sheer frustration, I set-up a website ambitiously names HyerhidrosisNetwork.com to document my understanding of hyperhidrosis and what I was learning about treatment options. However, soon it has evolved way beyond what I originally thought it would. Since the time I started in 2012, the website has seen a surge of visitors from all across the globe. As more people have joined the website, more useful it has become over all those months. HHN is now one of the largest, authentic, non-biased, non-commercial sources of information, and community support for hyperhidrosis patients. Why This Book (and why not)? With my hyperhidrosis problem, and my involvement in Hyperhidrosis Network, I got opportunities to interact with very wide variety of people - from thousands of patients, to hundreds of doctors, to tens of product manufacturers and then a few clearly shady operators trying to make quick money by drawing on the desperation of patients to get rid of sweat. Through this book, I am trying to summarize everything I have learnt in a concise, brief way so that other patients like me can get the most objective information about Hyperhidrosis without having to go through the learning curve that I have had to. I do not, even for a moment, pose to be the one to "know" the solution to excessive sweat issues. Nor does this book promise any miracle cure to get rid of that awkward sweat overnight (how I wish that was possible!). However, I do promise that after reading this book you will be way better informed on what is hyperhidrosis, why it happens and what you can do to manage this well enough so as to minimize impact on your quality of life. Hope you find this useful - I will appreciate any constructive feedback you might have on the book. Good luck!

By grinch This book didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but it's definitely informative for those who don't know much about hyperhidrosis and are interested in the different types of treatment available. I wish the author had included more info on how the treatment worked for him.

Creasy, a veteran mercenary, had found solitude on a small, Mediterranean island, far from the violent conflicts of his past profession. That solitude is broken when he is confronted by Juliet, a thirteen-year-old heroin addict whose life has been almost destroyed by 'The Blue Ring', a powerful, worldwide cartel dealing in drugs, prostitution and the use of Satanism to pursue their ends. Now Creasy Has a new mission: to hunt down the evil men who trade in death and degradation ... and destroy their paymaster, the evil genius at the centre of an international web of corruption.

An Unnerving Read By paul mason This novel is not for the faint of heart.A ring of kidnappers has been snatching ladies and girls in Europe, then proceeding to get them hooked on herion and force them to prostitute themselves to maintain their dirty habit. Luckily ex-mercenary's Creasy and his adopted 19 year old son have a vested interest in destroying "The Blue Ring".The writing in this novel is relatively crisp and clean, perhaps counterpoint to the main plot line. Some of the passages Quinnell pens are indeed very unsettling and disturbing in his description which is almost too realistic. One almost HAS to wonder just how many papers he pulled his plot from, yet paradoxically there are parts where the reader must suspend their disbelief in order for the story on the whole to work.I enjoyed this book even though it almost gave me nightmares as Quinell redefined what and who evil is in this world.

However, with this one, he seems to have lost interest in the story with 40 pages to go. The denouement is over much too quickly. That said, the rest of the book is vintage Quinnell. He has written far better books (The Mahdi is excellent, Man On Fire and The Perfect Kill are very good), but he does the 'tough guy out to take out the bad guys by whatever means necessary' as well as anyone. If you plan to read The Blue Ring, be sure to read Man on Fire and The Perfect Kill first. The adopted son who plays such a predominant role in this book will make no sense if you have not at least read The Perfect Kill first.

The story here is that young, innocent, girls are harmed by evil men and our hero Creasy is an avenging angel who sets everything right. The Greek god in mythology named Nemesis was a remorseless goddess: the goddess of revenge. That's Creasy! The used paperback book I got has a photo that looks like you are looking through a cross shaped keyhole to see a teenage girl. At least 2 new characters come to Creasy's aid, so his team becomes larger. Colonel Satta of the carabinieri has a bigger role in this book. Remember to read book 2 in the Creasy series: The Perfect Kill

I will list the types of birds included at the bottom of this review for anyone interested in reviewing the whole list. The bird designs are really beautifully drawn. I have never seen artist Georgie Woolridge's work before but I am very impressed. She provides some background information in the first few pages of the book which were very interesting to read. The designs include a great level of detail – some of it intricate but not so much so that it will be difficult to color. I love that the artist has woven flower elements into some of the birds to make it more fun for me to color. I did some exploring and discovered she has artwork for other animals, so I am hopeful that we will see some future coloring books with more of these lovely designs. The book is beautifully made. The cover is gorgeous with a deep blue and purple aurora borealis type foil accented bird on the front and with two colored birds on the interior front and back flaps. While the cover folds out, the publisher lost an opportunity to provide extra coloring as they used a simple orange tone on the interior rather than designs to color. I believe that this is the first adult coloring book that I have which was published by St. Martin's Griffin. I hope that they publish more in the future with the same quality as this one.The designs are printed on a good heavyweight white paper that is not perforated. The actual larger design for coloring is printed on the front side of each page. On the opposite side (behind the prior page) is a listing of information about the bird you are coloring which might background, size, coloring, etc. along with a small line drawing of the birds which you can also color if you wish. The binding is sewn rather than glued, which is a sign of a quality book. You can remove all the pages from the book if you wish by snipping those threads every few pages as they appear. The only marker that did not bleed through to some extent were my Tombow dual brush. I used the brush side (rather than the marker point) and I think that the lack of a hard tip is what made the difference for these. Otherwise, all my water and alcohol-based markers did bleed through (even Staedler fineliner triplus.) None of my gel pens had problems and my coloring pencils went on thick and creamy. If I want to use all of my markers, I will only be sacrificing parts of the information page (as mentioned above) so that is not an issue for me. The information will still be visible and I can always color those small info pictures with coloring pencils should I choose to do so. I would suggest putting a heavy piece of paper or chipboard under the page you are working on so marker ink does not seep further into the book. This book is physically perfect for me as a colorist. The only real improvement I could suggest would be perforated paper. I hate to suggest a better grade of paper for markers because this paper is so nice as it is. I am happy to put the page under my work if the tradeoff is such luscious paper for my pencils. While there is a listing at the back of the book (with cross reference to the page the bird is printed on), here is a listing of the birds included: American Goldfinch, Bar-headed Goose, Barn Owl, Black Kite, Blue-Footed Booby, Blue Jay, Blue Tit, Bobolink, California Quail, Common Tailorbird, Domesticated Turkey, Eurasian Teal, European Robin, Flamingo, Golden Eagle, Greater Roadrunner, Gyrfalcon, Hoopoe, Hummingbird, Indian Roller, Kingfisher, Kookaburra, Laughing Dove, Little Cormorant, Little Ringed Plover, Magpie, Mandarin Duck, Ostrich, Peacock, Pink-Backed Pelican, Purple Heron, Rainbow Bee-Eater, Red-Breasted Goose, Rhode Island Red, Rockhopper Penguin, Rose-Ringed Parakeet and Tawny Owl.

It took me a while to start work in this book because it was so gorgeous and I didn't want to make mistakes. The 38 bird illustrations are printed on thick, high quality paper that stands up to watercolor pencils and gel pens without warping or bleeding through. Markers do bleed through, but that's to be expected. It's one illustration per page, and accompanied by a short description of what kind of bird is depicted, and some facts about its life and behavior. She takes birds from all over, from the Americas, Europe, southeast Asia, Australia. I like the way she incorporates mendi designs into the feather patterns, which makes it fun to color. Some birds have more of the mendi designs than others.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The very best of adult coloring books, a gem! By ValérieB. This book is absolutely amazing. The color illustrations are gorgeous and just show you the best that can be done. The paper quality is perfect, smooth and heavy. I use pencils and crayons and they blend softly into the page. Each bird is being described in its habitat and some color indications are given but you are free to improvise. What I particularly like is that the drawings are intricate, yet enough space is provided so that you can use blending and shading within each feather space which makes it particularly interesting to work on for adults. Some books are lovely but the details are so tiny that coloring with tips and 0.3 markers are the only options and one feels like the options are limited. I will try watercolor pencils on this one too. Highly recommended! I love the quality of the drawings as I do not like coloring on juvenile kinds of drawings

Depression is not sadness, weakness, failed faith, black magic or a white man disease. It can just about happen to anyone, and can also be overcome. Don't suffer in silence. Take action now!

The World Health Organization estimates that depression will be the second leading cause of death and disability by 2020. Yet several remain ignorant of the illness and many suffer with limited access to mental health resources.

As Dr.Vivian O. Ikem discovered, depression isolates and ostracizes those it strikes. Social, cultural, and religious attitudes toward mental illness also make it difficult for people to seek the help they need, leaving many considering suicide as a final, tragic option.

Shadows in the mirror: The many faces of depression offers a one-stop resource to those wanting to understand depression and seek the help they need for recovery. Beginning with Vivian's own honest account of her encounter with depression, the book provides information on types, causes, prevention and treatment of this devastating illness.

A Christian and woman of African descent, Vivian sees the need to address depression from cultural and religious standpoints. She challenges world religions to rethink common attitudes toward depression, offering socially inclusive attitudes that communities can develop to help those suffering from the disease.

This book joins works such as Joanna Swinney’s Dark Woods: A Young Woman’s Journey out of Depression as an insightful examination into one of the world’s most debilitating diseases—while offering readers hope for recovery.

Review Thank you for writing this excellent book. Its genuineness, understanding, compassion and insight will, I believe, make it a very important addition to the literature. Your book will help people. --Dr Tim Cantopher; Consultant Psychiatrist, Priory Hospital Woking and Author of Depressive Illness The curse of The Strong (UK)Vivian's book is honest, engaging, personal yet objective and enlightening at different levels. She educates us about depression and addresses various issues arising from society, religion and culture that drive stigma. I highly recommend this book. --Terrie M. Williams; Author of Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We re Not Hurting and Mental Health Advocate (USA)This book was a compelling read about a very personal experience. I very much appreciated your honesty and the revelations of how depression impacted on your life, especially as someone who had achieved so much at a relatively young age. It must have been difficult and it would have required a lot of courage to write so intimately about the pain and suffering which you were eventually able to overcome. As a personal account it will resonate with many people who have had and are experiencing depression. It will offer guidance and hope that depression can be overcome. This may already be the case for those who have read it. It will also provide important information about depression for anyone who wants to understand what depression can do to a person s life. This is extremely valuable, as depression is poorly understood - as you say in the book. I will highly recommend this book to others. --Alan Leather; President, NGO Forum for Health (France)

An eye opener to a common but little known issue By Samuel E Enwenede This book has been intelligently written to shed light on the common problem of depression of which most people know little about. Particularly interesting in this book are the aspects of religion and culture on the interpretation of the issue of depression which definitely needs to change. I would urge anyone reading this review to get this book and read it. It has been written in simple plain English to aid easy understanding of its content. Many thanks to the Author, Vivian Ikem, for her immense contribution to spreading the message about the need for a change in the perception of depression, especially within the black and ethnic minority communities

Informative and Thought Provoking By Mr Adeyemi Vivian provides an informed expose into a grossly misunderstood and underestimated illness that is depression. I am quite taken aback by how much I did not know about depression. Vivian’s first hand account is both chilling and encouraging; a wake up call to be more educated on the subject a wake up call to support those who display symptoms, a wake up call to get the right help if suffering from symptoms. An intriguing page turner that shines light on a not so pleasant issue. Marvellous!

This book offers excellent insight into the illness depression and its effect on sufferers and those around them. Written by a survivor, it challenges the many stereotypes existing in African communities about the illness and offers ways that loved ones can show support to sufferers. I must mention that the thoroughness of the author in presenting the illness accurately is outstanding! I know that the book will be useful to many, whether they are sufferers or otherwise.

Try Darkness (Ty Buchanan Legal Thriller #2), by James Scott Bell

From Booklist In Try Dying (2007), L.A. trial lawyer Ty Buchanan’s fianceé was killed, and Ty himself was brought up on murder charges. Now he’s trying to put that disastrous period in his life behind him. He’s living in a trailer on the grounds of a monastery, easing back into professional life, when a case involving a woman and her young daughter, who are being tossed out of their apartment by an unscrupulous building owner, draws him back into the dangerous world he thought he’d left behind. The case seems a simple enough matter, but soon after Ty makes it clear he will pursue his client’s rights, the woman is found dead, and now Ty must protect the little girl while trying to find out who’s behind her mother’s murder. Bell builds on the numerous strengths of the first novel, firmly positioning Buchanan as a strong series lead and once again telling a story that is equal parts crime drama and human emotion. A solid second installment in what should prove to be a popular series. --David Pitt

Review "In true Bell style, book two of this series begins with the hero in the middle of a unique situation. Hold on for another whodunit thrill ride with an honor-bound protagonist readers can't help but root for." (Romantic Times (Starred Review))"Bell, an attorney turned prolific novelist, has created in Buchanan an appealing and series-worthy protagonist....Readers who pride themselves on figuring out the answers before an author reveals them are in for a surprise, too: Bell is very good at keeping secrets. Fans of thrillers with lawyers as their central characters-Lescroart and Margolin, especially-will welcome this new addition to their must-read lists." (on Try Dying Booklist)"[W]hen you pick up a Bell novel you can count on his trademark tag-line "The Suspense Never Rests" to be true....The scenes zoom. The plot zips. The dialogue zings....Just when we think we might have things figured out he throws in a spiral we never saw coming. Nary a wasted word and packed with action, Try Darkness is even better than Try Dying." (TitleTrakker.com)

Ty Buchanan, defender of the defenseless, takes on the case of a man accused of robbery and murder. The man claims he didn't do it, but eye-witnesses ID him. Or is it a case of mistaken identity? Ty is determined to find out. Then, a secretive woman with a six year old daughter seeks his help, only to wind up dead, leaving the little girl, with no last name, orphaned. Ty takes the child under his wing and sets out to find her mother's killer. But Ty is on his own now, with no trial experience in criminal law, armed only with his sense of justice, sharp mind, and a dogged determination to push through all obstacles to find the truth. We met Ty in Try Dying, Book 1 of the Ty Buchanan mystery/thriller series when his fiancée was killed and he learned it wasn't just a freak accident--it was out-and-out murder. He took some hard knocks, even accused of murder, but fought his way through to the truth. His sometimes smart-aleck and confident attitude gets his bell rung a few times in Try Darkness, too, Book 2. And his temper threatens to be his undoing a number of times. But the wise counsel of his friends Sister Mary Veritas, a Benedictine nun, and Father Bob, a disgraced priest, try to help him stay on track. Ty's home and sanctuary is in a trailer situated on the grounds of St. Monica's due to the Benedictine rule of hospitality, Sister Mary and Father Bob his only 'family.Try Darkness is fast moving and action packed, with snappy dialog. The pages practically turned themselves as I read--as I've come to expect from a James Scott Bell book. I love the unique layout of the chapters, all 191 of them! But not to worry, they're not long. Some are only a paragraph, some may appear two to a page, maybe even, with the book open, you'll see five chapters between the two pages. It's fun, and kept me turning the pages. AND, there's no place to find an easy break where you feel ready to set the book aside. Can't be done. I read Try Darkness in less than two days, waking up in the night to my husband taking my glasses off, setting the book aside and turning out the light.Do I recommend this book? Oh, yeah!

Darlington Ever since his first novel came out in 1995, James Scott Bell's been an author to watch. "The Darwin Conspiracy", a sometimes tongue-in-cheek look at the evolution debate, put him on our radar. Two years later his legal thriller "Circumstantial Evidence" debuted, and since then Jim hasn't strayed too far from his suspense groove. In fact, when you pick up a Bell novel you can count on his trademark tag-line "The Suspense Never Rests" to be true. That's certainly the case for his new Ty Buchanan crime/mystery series. In "Try Dying" (Book 1), Ty's character was established. He's a fighter, an attorney you don't want to push too hard. Yet we always suspected he had a softer side. Now in "Try Darkness" (Book 2), a little girl's mother is murdered and Ty becomes her impromptu guardian. Fatherly instincts Ty didn't even know he had bubble to the surface. He'll do anything to defend the young life under his care. Why was her mother murdered? What connection does the crime have with charges the mother was about to bring to the motel ready to evict them? As usual, there's much more going on than first meets the eye, and it's up to Ty to unravel the mystery and keep himself and his friends alive in the process.Ty's character has developed, and he now gives legal advice to the poor and downtrodden. The pursuit of justice for his clients keeps him going and awake at night. He already lost everything in Try Dying, and he's still living at the St. Monica's community. So he has nothing to lose and little fear, a dangerous combination for his opponents. Not that he doesn't have his vulnerabilities--the wind's knocked out of him more than once. But like the crime fiction heroes of yesteryear, Ty Buchanan always clambers back on his feet. Even in the bleakest moments he'll press on--sometimes bleeding, sometimes barely able to see straight.Every hero needs a confidant, and Ty's basketball wielding friend Sister Mary fills more pages here than in the first book. We're delving deeper into her character as she grapples with the struggle between her faith as a nun and the rules and regulations of the Benedictine community. Father Bob makes appearances as well, always available to offer wisdom and a caring ear to Ty.Fans of Bell's previous inspirational novels won't be disappointed. In some ways the faith elements are even more prominent in this series, since the St. Monica's setting naturally sparks some spiritual conversations. But hard-boiled crime fiction lovers need not fear being preached at or hammered over the head with a "message". The story always takes center stage.James Scott Bell's goal for this series was to write books in the vein of the great crime fiction stories of the 40's and 50's like "The Big Sleep" & "The Maltese Falcon". And for those weary of the gratuitous violence, sex, and language found in much of today's crime novels the Ty Buchanan series will be a breath of fresh air. Yes, bad stuff happens, but we aren't forced to watch it unfold in technicolor. The scenes zoom. The plot zips. The dialogue zings. And the spiritual thread challenges us to re-think our worldview. It's almost like watching a movie unfold across the pages. As always, Jim is a wizard of surprises. Just when we think we might have things figured out he throws in a spiral we never saw coming. Nary a wasted word and packed with action, "Try Darkness" is even better than "Try Dying".=====AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JAMES SCOTT BELLby C.J. DarlingtonQ: Share with us a little bit about what first drove you to write the Ty Buchanan series.JSB: I get a lot of ideas from news stories. Several years ago a man shot his wife in South L.A., then drove to an overpass, got out, shot himself and fell a hundred feet to the freeway below. His body slammed into a car and killed the driver. That stayed with me. I thought, what an opening for a novel. (I can't help it).So I started playing around with the incident in my mind, and wondered who would be most affected by this, and came up with a young hotshot lawyer, Tyler Buchanan, whose fiancée is killed on page one in an incident like that. That started the ball rolling.Q: How did you come up with the name for your lead character?JSB: It was purposeful. One of my favorite Westerns is "Buchanan Rides Alone" starring Randolph Scott. He's a loner who rides into a corrupt town and helps a guy, and gets a lot of people mad at him. Sounds like Ty in Los Angeles.Tyler was chosen because there's a fight going on inside him, a dark side that competes for attention. Sort of like an inner Tyler Durden from "The Fight Club".That juxtaposition of these characters seemed like it would make great fodder for inner conflict, which is, after all, the most compelling aspect of a novel.Q: Can you explain a little further?JSB: Flat characters are ultimately dull, even if you put in all the plot fireworks you can. Inner conflict is essential to overcome this. I mean, look at "High Noon". The inner conflict is written all over Gary Cooper's face for the whole movie. And why not? He's probably going to be killed by the bad guys, and he's just married Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly! No wonder he's conflicted.Seriously, as the town refuses to help him, and death becomes almost guaranteed, he knows he cannot back out. It would kill him inside. That's inner conflict. The character has to face a choice that means "dying inside" if he does the right thing.Q: How did you develop the plot for the second book, Try Darkness?JSB: Again, an item in the paper. There are low rent hotels in L.A. that sometimes play fast and loose with the law. In something called the "28 day shuffle," they force residents out before a full month, so certain renters' rights don't kick in.I have Buchanan representing a poor woman who's getting this treatment. Of course, murder happens and Ty has to find out what's going on. Because he now has the woman's six year old daughter to protect.Q: Have you found writing a series more challenging than writing stand-alone novels? Why or why not?JSB: I am liking this series, becoming very fond of the characters. The challenge is to keep them growing throughout, even as they encounter twisting plot lines. But I enjoy the challenge. When it's really done well, as in the books of Michael Connelly, it's incredibly satisfying. That's a high bar, but it's what I'm reaching for.Q: What is the role of the Catholic characters - Sister Mary and Father Bob?JSB: They represent one side in a multi-layered argument going on inside Buchanan. Spiritual interest is high in society right now, and why wouldn't it be, with the way things are? The search for answers is strong now, and I like having several different characters for Buchanan to play off. There is Sister Mary Veritas, the basketball playing nun, and Father Bob, as you mentioned. There's also Barton C. "Pick" McNitt, a former philosophy professor who went crazy and now runs a coffee bar where Ty meets his clients. McNitt is an atheist who rails, Howard Beale style, against societal ills. Then there's the simple innocence of a child, Kylie, who Ty has to protect. All these things swirl around him as he deals with the loss of the woman he was going to marry.Q: What are you hoping the Ty Buchanan series accomplishes?JSB: Like any novelist, I want to give people a good read. I want them to fall in love with the characters. And I want to write about the search for justice in a dark world. That seems to be my theme, in all my books. But whatever the theme, unless readers are compelled to turn the pages, nothing else will matter. So that's my first task.Q: How many more books can we expect in the Ty Buchanan series and what's his next adventure?JSB: The next one is Try Fear (mid-2009). This one is going to have a full on murder trial, and takes place mostly in Hollywood. I'd love to keep the series going after that. I have thirty good titles (when I get to "Try the Veal" I'll have to pack it in). The more the word gets out on the series, the better the chance it'll go on. So be sure to tell every reader to get a copy, and spread the word to their entire extended family.Q: Umm...JSB: No pressure.

After the tragic death of his fiancé, Ty moves into a trailer behind a convent and befriends a nun with a passion for hoops. Together they work to bring justice to the downtrodden that cross their path. Ty's latest case involves a young girl whose mother was brutally murdered before her eyes. As Ty and Sister Mary Veritas look further into the case, they uncover a conspiracy between a larger than life business mogul and Ty's old law firm. It will take every ounce of Ty's wit and Sister Mary's unwavering faith to bring justice and hope to the little girl that has stolen their hearts.James Scott Bell has given us exactly what we want in a sequel: an even better story. I thoroughly enjoyed Try Dying, but this second installment really outweighs the first. Ty Buchanan is such an engaging character full of heart, flaws, and passion. His own personal search for truth and meaning is such a welcome addition to an already rich plot. Bell knows how to structure a plot (heck, he has written a book about it) and his talent is on full display here. Never does the story drag or cause you to wonder just how many more pages are left. This is truly one of the more engaging novels I've read in some time.Let's not forget about the wonderfully strange cast of characters Bell treats us to. Sister Mary Veritas is a fun and complex counterpart to Ty and their relationship is wonderfully explored here. Father Bob and Pick McNitt are back and as entertaining as ever with their witty banter and unique perspectives. Bell also mixes in some new characters that are sure to become fan favorites.Try Darkness holds it's own as a mystery and also works as a relevant exploration into faith. Ty and Sister Mary remind me of Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth on the TV show, Bones. Being a self proclaimed agnostic, Ty often butts heads with Sister Mary over issues of spirituality making for fascinating conversations between the two. Indeed, one of the most intriguing aspects of Ty Buchanan is his passion for helping and serving others despite his uncertainty about God.James Scott Bell totally has me hooked and I am eagerly awaiting another installment in this impressive series.

Life is But a Dream: A Marlow and Sage Mystery Thriller (A Nursery Rhyme Suspense Book 2), by Lee Strauss

Review Kept me guessing...Lee Strauss kept my brain working as I attempted to figure out the mystery in this second Nursery Rhyme sci-fi suspense novel! Marlow and Sage are reunited, but an extra layer of complexity is added, because in THIS universe, Sage doesn't know Marlow. The chemistry's still there between these two characters, though, and they'll have to pair up if they have any hope of figuring out who's behind these mysterious dreams.Rachel - Amazon reviewer

From the Author I was inspired by the TV shows Fringe and Elementary. Both shows feature strong but unlikely heroines and heroes who aren't a good fit at first glance but grow on each other over time. The fringe or pseudoscience aspects of the mystery/crimes give the series a paranormal twist.

Just when Marlow thought his life was going to get back to normal, weird dreams and suicides start happening. And come to find out, Sage is experiencing the same dreams. Will they be able to solve these strange deaths before more lives are at risk…including their own?I absolutely loved book one of the Nursery Rhyme Suspense series. So when I was given the chance to read this one I was on pins and needles until I had a free moment to start it. This really is a series that keeps you on your toes and guessing the entire time. If you are like me your person of interest will be changing a lot.I loved seeing Marlow and Sage again. And even though she doesn't remember who he is, Marlow sure remembers her. His feelings for Sage have grown since he first met her. And if you read book one then you are probably hoping for a love connection between the two. Will it happen? Or will more obstacles get in their way? Read the book! I know you are dying to know!!LIFE IS BUT A DREAM started out really strong for me. It was a great story that kept my attention throughout the book. I have always loved a good detective'ish read. My only fault was with the ending. It ended a little too abrupt for my taste. Buuuut please don't let that sway you from reading and enjoying the story. You may find you like how it ends.4 Who Done It? Stars!

By Amazon Customer I really loved the first book (Run Run Run) and I was looking forward to know more about their relationship and what they will find out. I liked the characters of them both and how they approach the problem (the killer). There was some tricky plot twists in the book, but this time it was more steady, not so shocking. Little by little the friendship of Sage and Marlow has grown, but I was feeling bad for Sage, because of her lack of trust to Marlow. Also I was excited to see Marlow getting more comfortable around the people, especially his new friend, but at the same time I wanted to stay with team Sage and Marlow. I would say this book was walking around the bush a little, because of the dreams main characters has and all this drama : I have to save him/her because someone is going to die. All in all I really looking forward to the next book. I feel that Marlow new friend has a lot to do with all deads or she is somehow related. This book was really good. I give 4 stars, for the steady feeling in the book.

The suspense is ramped up bit by bit, forcing you to turn the page. Strauss also masterfully weaves in intriguing psychological elements as well.I absolutely adore Marlow, and I had to know what would happen to my favorite nerd as he deals with being in love with a girl he believes is out of his league. Of course things can't be simple for poor Marlow, and a string of deaths on campus bring he and Sage back together. Our duo must work together to discover the truth behind the deaths, and their mysteriously linked dreams, before they become the killer's next target.Life is But a Dream is a fast paced, exciting ride. I can't wait to read the next installment and find out what unusual adventures await Marlow and Sage.

"It's just to say that no one has come to pick Nathan up from school, and we were wondering if there was a problem of some kind?"

As Mark Douglas photographs a pod of whales stranded in the waters off Edinburgh's Portobello Beach, he is called by his son's school: his wife, Lauren, hasn't turned up to collect their son. Calm at first, Mark collects Nathan and takes him home, but as the hours slowly crawl by he increasingly starts to worry.

With brilliantly controlled reveals, we learn some of the painful secrets of the couple's shared past, not least that it isn't the first time Lauren has disappeared. And as Mark struggles to care for his son and shield him from the truth of what's going on, the police seem dangerously short of leads. That is until a shocking discovery...

Doug Johnstone is the author of four novels, most recently Hit & Run, acclaimed by Ian Rankin as "great slice of noir" and by Irvine Welsh as "a grisly parable for our times". He is also a freelance journalist, a songwriter, and a musician and has a PhD in nuclear physics. He lives in Edinburgh.

As the synopsis states, the reader is drawn into the tale through a series of reveals, that allow us to bear witness to the deep, dark secrets that exist within families, and yet, by the same token, illustrates the ability to bring forth forgiveness for the sins of the past.Mark Douglas' life is turned upside down by the suspicious disappearance of his wife Lauren, leaving himself and his six year old son, Nathan, in a state of turmoil. Lauren has disappeared before suffering the effects of post-natal depression in the wake of Nathan's birth, and with Mark's knowledge that his wife is pregnant again he fears that these events may well be repeating themselves. However, as the plot unfolds and Mark receives some devastating news, it becomes clear that with the police dragging their heels, there are darker motives at work in relation to her disappearance than at first thought, leading Mark and his son into extreme danger. As events unfold we discover Mark's previous propensity for violence, admittedly in defence of his wife Lauren initially, but enough to cause the police some suspicion as to how much of a part it plays in his wife's disappearance. As Mark struggles to keep mind and body together for the sake of his son, Johnstone builds the air of tension and frustration, that Mark experiences and more crucially how this dark corner of Mark's personality rises again as he labours to discover the truth. We see a man quick to anger under pressure, but is he as guilty as the police suspect? I'm not telling...His relationship with his son is perfectly portrayed, showing the mantle of parenthood is no easy one with Mark experiencing all the normal peaks and troughs of becoming a sole parent to a lively six year old boy, confused by sudden the absence of his mother. As events spiral out of control and Mark embarks on his own personal crusade to uncover the truth, his anger levels ratchet up, until he questions his own sense of control even in relation to his son, and this provides another interesting facet to the overall story. There is also a poignant theme of familial reconciliation built into the plot, as bridges are rebuilt between Mark and Lauren's mother, following a violent altercation some years previously, centring on Lauren's relationship with her father. This works well within the plot, and adds a solidity to the portrayal of human relationships, which I think is the stand out feature of the novel. As the reasons for Lauren's disappearance come to light and the story denigrated into some fairly unbelievable confrontations, I must admit by not being truly convinced by the whole set-up and the central premise. However, as I have already identified the strength of the characterisation and the development of relationships as the main hook for this novel, any weaknesses in the playing out of the plot are easily ignored, as Johnstone so readily engages us with his heartfelt portrayal of Mark and Nathan and the minutiae of their relationship, reeling from the loss of their wife and mother respectively.

There's no larking about in this tale of one man's battle to discover why his wife has vanished but the raw emotion that Johnstone manages to capture is heartfelt and although I found it difficult to read at times, the honesty that comes over makes this such a worthwhile read. I was terrified not about what had happened to the wife but what was possibly going to happen to the father as his life got out of control. It's difficult to write realistic dialogue with a child but Johnstone pulls this off very well, and shows a good understanding of what makes children tick and how their little minds flash about from one emotion to another.A great story of human emotions mixed up with a few gangsters and howling weather on the east coast of Scotland. One not to miss and I can't wait to find out what Johnstone comes up with next - a very classy writer.

Mark takes his son home and tries ring his wife on her mobile phone. Her number is not available.Mark has no idea where his wife could go, she had no friends, work is long over, the phone number is unavailable. Lauren also is pregnant. Mark rings to his friends, but no one has any idea where Lauren can be. Mark turns on his wife's laptop, checks her accounts in social networks, desktop - nothing.Mark worries that Lauren may have a relapse. Six years ago, when Lauren after a difficult birth barely survived, she had disappeared for ten days. Mark was confused and did not know what to do. He was left alone to nurse the baby, wondering when his wife would return. Ten days later, she’d returned, but did not say where she was all this time, and Mark did not ask, fearing that it could adversely affect the wife. After brilliant Smokeheads and disastrous Hit & Run we could expect anything from Doug Johnstone. Gone Again has turned out much better than Hit & Run, although not as good as Smokeheads.Johnstone’s head is clogged with interesting ideas, but he did not always successfully implement them, not revealing his potential by 100 percent. Here, the first half of the book is brilliant. The author from the outset throws a hook, and it is impossible not to get caught at it. The book grabes you from the first pages, and gradually Johnstone begins to return to the past, giving the background on the characters, the history of the relationship between husband and wife, and that includes the secrets of the past. The book is written in the third person, and we can clearly hear Mark’s voice. He's a little short-tempered, but a caring family man, a loving husband, he seems to be a positive character, but by the middle of the novel Johnstone makes us to think otherwise. In the middle noir intonations start to sink through: there is a possibility that Mark is an unreliable narrator, and his mistakes play against him. And now Mark from the victim turns into a controversial character, even shady. Johnstone little by little raises tension. In the second half the book loses its suspense, and the novel is slipping into a more or less linear thriller. There are coincidences like that Mark holds a gun at home (for what in Scotland you can get a real five-year prison term), and even when Lauren was depressed, he did not get rid of a gun. The transformation of Mark from a broken hearted photographer with emotional problems into an action hero, shooting with a gun at the villains and torturing people, look too unnatural. Yes, you can believe that Mark is short-tempered and sometimes loses control of himself, but I do not believe that he would use a few tricks from the arsenal of the professional thief Parker from Richard Stark’s novels. It is one thing to break a woman's nose, and another to breaking into homes, waving a gun, shooting people’s hands. However, it's a quick read that can entertain and deliver a certain amount of pleasure. I just wish that the author worked on the characters better.

Tate Echo, former FBI profiler, thinks he's finally put the past behind him and moved on with his new life in his sleepy home town of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. But a midnight call has him running back to the only woman he’s ever loved and the corrupt city streets that he's tried to forget. Fearing that his ex-wife will die alone in a Richmond hospital, Tate takes the next flight out and finds himself pulled into the FBI’s investigation of a child trafficking operation. Tate pushes aside his feelings of guilt and regret and he vows to keep Emma safe from a hired killer who’s brazen enough to attack at her home. Victoria McEvers knows that the things her new daddy wants her to do in his room are wrong. But how will she escape the sick “games” that he has in store for her and her friends? No phone, no neighbors and no one to help. The diary of a dead girl brings all the horror of Walker Farms to life in the heart of a nine year old and forces her to depend on herself. Emma Gage-Echo wakes in the hospital and knows that time is running out for three little girls who were taken by a monster. The girls disappeared from a local orphanage and are reported as runaways when nothing could be further from the truth. Emma saw the girls, right before she was shot and now she is fighting for her own life, and the lives of the children who've been enslaved by a man with no conscience. With no leads, and the trafficker’s always one step ahead of them, Tate and Emma are forced to partner with a killer to find the truth. The clock is ticking and with every hour that passes the chances of finding the girls unharmed lessens.

Emma and Tate's characters were well crafted in the original book but showing this story from the side of the children was both disturbing and heartbreak but hopeful

EXCERPT FROM THE FR. CAPRANICA MYSTERIES ...The congregation waited patiently as the smoldering fire ignited several small twigs, then spread to the larger branches. Bishop Hadrikus intoned the blessing, and Fr. Capranica chanted the responses. The Easter Fire was blazing. The Mass had begun. In the city two miles away, the druids were preparing for the celebration of the vernal equinox, their spring feast day ceremony, which would begin at midnight. It would take place at an outdoor stone circle in the center of the city. The bodies of aborted children were buried in the circle: the pagans considered children in the womb to be the gods' favorite offering...

The Father Capranica Mysteries: Stories of the Strange and Supernatural, by Fr. Mike Driscoll

Review The Fr. Capranica Mysteries: Stories of the Strange and Supernatural by Fr. Mike Driscoll is the perfect fiction accompaniment to his non-fiction work Demons, Deliverance, and Discernment, published by Catholic Answers!"As a cryptobiologist, I find these stories very interesting and entertaining!" --Antoinette C."I like Fr. Capranica. He's laid back, even in the middle of difficult and tumultuous situations." --Christopher M., 19-year-old fiction reader."Well-written and compelling." ~ Catholic Library World, December 2015

From the Author The Fr. Capranica Mysteries are my attempt to imitate both G.K. Chesterton's Fr. Brown Stories and the things-that-go-bump-in-the-night feel of Alice Cooper. For those not familiar with him, G. K. Chesterton was an early 20th century Englishman who wrote about politics, economics, and the Catholic faith. He also authored numerous short stories about Fr. Brown, a Catholic priest who investigates crimes, particularly murders and burglaries. His special talent is an ability to imagine himself committing the crime in question, which invariably leads him to the perpetrator. Fr. Brown always has something to tell us about human nature and the Catholic faith. Fr. Capranica is an early 21st century priest who investigates supernatural mysteries. I will call him an American, though his background is not quite what it first seems to be. His knowledge of folklore and mythology enables him to solve cases involving the spirit world. Like his fictional English predecessor, Fr. Capranica teaches us about human nature and the Catholic faith. In regard to Alice Cooper: if you are under the age of fifty, you may not know who he is. I was ten years old when Alice's song School's Out was first played on the radio. I think it was the month of May, when we were itching for summer vacation to begin. I liked Alice's creepy, Halloween-type persona: he was pictured holding a huge snake on stage, and he sang about black widow spiders. He even has a song about a haunted house. If you're a red-blooded ten-year-old American male, what is there not to like? From the time I was that age, I have enjoyed scary books, movies, and TV shows--stories about monsters, ghosts, and devils. The last story in this book mentions that Fr. Capranica grew up listening to Alice Cooper. I couldn't resist including that bit of autobiography, even though it contradicts another part of the book, as you will see. I should state for the record that I don't approve of all of Alice's music, and I don't approve of everything he does on stage, which is why I have never seen him in concert. Off stage, I'm sure he's a sinner, like the rest of us. Yet he has successfully conquered a drinking problem; he and his wife Sheryl have been married for thirty years; and he has returned to the Christian faith in which he was raised. It is due to those positive spiritual and moral endeavors that I am comfortable mentioning Alice, as well as Chesterton, as an inspiration for these stories.

About the Author Fr. Mike Driscoll is a priest of the Diocese of Peoria, IL. He was ordained in 1992; has been pastor of several parishes; and is currently serving as chaplain of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Ottawa, IL. He has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in Moral Theology from Mount St. Mary's Seminary, and a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University. His doctoral dissertation was entitled "How Catholic exorcists distinguish between demon possession and mental disorders." His book on the subject of spirit possession, Demons, Deliverance, and Discernment, is published by Catholic Answers. ~For more great fiction for the entire family, visit Bezalel Books~

Mike Driscol’s Demons, Deliverance, Discernment : Separating Fact from Fiction about the Spirit World. So when I found that he also recently released a novel I was intrigued. The book is a collection of short stories called The Father Capranica Mysteries: Stories of the Strange and Supernatural. As the author wrote:> “The Fr. Capranica Mysteries are my attempt to imitate both G.K. Chesterton’s Fr. Brown Stories and the things-that-go-bump-in-the-night feel of Alice Cooper.”Overall I did enjoy this collection of stories. This collection starts out pretty strong with a story called “Storm Sirens”, and then “Walk Through Walls”. This promise at the start is mostly kept throughout the collection with plenty of solid stories. The main character Fr. Capranica is a time traveling priest, but with certain limitations. He will travel through time, but only forward. He and pilgrims like him jump through time guided by divine providence to be where they are needed. This limitation reminded me that we are all sequential time travelers always moving forward in time and with cooperation with grace can be where God wants us to be.These stories are more X-Files than Alice Cooper, although Alice Cooper is a prominent character in the last story. It is obvious the author is a fan of him as I am. The reason I saw X-Files is that often the stories involve obscure folklore from multiple cultures. From pagan to Christian. Fr. Capranica besides his priestly duties is often called upon to investigate strange going ons. Just this aspect of the storytelling is satisfying. Included is a spiritual depth that adds to the stories. They often make a serious point spiritually without hitting you in the head providing a Fr. Brown aspect. This provides a layer to the story without sacrificing the story itself. Fr. Driscoll did lots of research on possession and exorcism in his Ph.D. program for counseling. The start of his book on exorcism includes information worldwide across cultures and history regarding exorcism and you can see that all this served well in providing information for these stories. It is nice to be able to read stories of this type without all the bad theology you often get.The stories are not told in a time sequential manner so you have stories mixed in of Fr. Capranica in early times of Church history. So you have some stories involve famous saints while being coy about who they are until close to the end of the story. Some of these specific stories were I think the weaker of the collection, although probably because I am put off by talking about a famous person with the slow reveal. Still even the lesser stories held my attention and this collection as a whole was worthwhile for me. I could easily see my self going back to it at a later date. The story involving Vincent Furnier (Alice Cooper) revolved around the origin of his stage name which actually makes for a pretty good story of this type. After his Christian conversion something happens that causes his family to bring in Fr. Capranica. Although it is an urban legend that he got his name from a Ouija board, it does provide a good basis for the story told as if it was fact and what the consequences could be.On another note while it is true that “You can’t just a book by its cover”, it’s also true that we do so anyway. Can’t say I am a fan of the cover and it makes the book look unprofessional. The book is published by Bezalel Books, a Catholic publishing company. Looking through their books I saw a similar problem in that many of their book covers were rather amateurish. They look like something that I could splice together and that is not an endorsement.

Capranica, a "pilgrim" through time who has a knack of being able to solve unusual mysteries with a supernatural bent. The stories take us from the year 433 to the present time; from St. Patrick to Alice Cooper. Most of the stories have a 'twist' at the end, and are based in folklore and mythology - featuring such figures as the huldra and the fir gortha . Fr. Capranica presents spritual wisdom from a Catholic perspective. While I would have liked a little more description, and some of the stories seem a lit pat at times, overall I enjoyed this collection, and hope that there's a sequel in the works. The author, Fr. Mike Driscoll is himself a Catholic priest and the author of "Demons, Deliverance, and Discernment."

Father Capranica encounters some interesting situations, his investigations take a few unexpected twists along the way. Enjoyable read.

He is Eka-vachani, a king who always keeps his word; Eka-bani, an archer who strikes his target with the first arrow; and Eka-patni, a husband who is eternally and absolutely devoted to a single wife. He is maryada purushottam Ram, the supreme upholder of social values, the scion of the Raghu clan, jewel of the solar dynasty, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, God who establishes order in worldly life. Hindus believe that in stressful and tumultuous times chanting Ram’s name and hearing his tale, the Ramayan, brings stability, hope, peace and prosperity. Reviled by feminists, appropriated by politicians, Ram remains serene in his majesty, the only Hindu deity to be worshipped as a king.

I have invested significant effort from my childhood to understand our Gods and philosophy better. Reading or listening to our stories often left many perplexing questions that created discomfort. One needs greater understanding, experience, the impatient yearning of a seeker, and at the same time patience to plough through great works to understand the Hindu view of the Universe in order to be able to answer these questions to oneself.Ram, though revered as God is still one of difficult characters for a questioning intellect to grasp completely. From a limited perspective one may question his action of disowning Seeta, the killing of Vali etc., Though our soceity tells us many stories it does not give us reasoning that answers the questions. It is an individual's initiative to figure the answers out.The younger generation has neither environment, veneration of the older generation, nor patience to seek out or wait out for answers. This impatience or lack of understanding could be used by powerful subversive fringe forces to distort information, corrupt minds, to present these wonderful stories with a sectarian view - which is injustice to an ancient culture. Though I do not support holding on to things that are not in the spirit of times, but one should also undestand these stories in the right context - which eventually leads to an appreciation that that they are indeed timeless. In this context, I find Dr.Devdutt Pattnaik's book illuminating to all those who want to understand Ram and understand why he is alloted such a place in our lives. The book tries to explain certain controversial episodes such as killing of vali and shambuka, abandonment of Sita and Sita's agnipravesha. All those minds that are looking for answers may find at least one good explanation here. I recommend it highly.

And later Ramanand Sagar's serial bought the epic into the Indian living rooms. But never before did I understand and enjoy the epic as much as I did this book. Ram in all the different facets of a man -son, brother, husband, king, friend, foe. And above all this the personal saga of the man in that era and his uncompromising strength in the face of personal sacrifices and absolute obedience. The quality that raised a man to divinity. The story of Ram touched me like never before and the respect and devotion felt for the deity in my prayer room is closer to my heart and understanding. Thanks to the author for bringing alive the hero from our mythology in a way that is more humane rather than the distant god he seemed to be! Looking forward to reading Sita now.

Very Engaging By Neetuma I've read many translations of the Ramayan in English and didn't find one that did justice to the story my parents told me when I was little, before this book. It's so well-written in an English (American) that I can understand well. I also love how the author includes variations of certain incidences from different states/cultures within India. Definitely a must read. Even if someone is not religious, the story is heroic, magical and therapeutic.
