"AN INTENSE JOURNEY INTO A MYSTERIOUS WORLD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!" -- DELPHI REVIEWS Poisonous swamp, blood thirsty cultists and a holy man gone for sure wholesale mad are all part of the investigation. Oh and by the way, bring back the wayward wife also if that wouldn't be too much trouble and yes, try extremely hard to not get killed in the process. After that, things may get complicated. When private detective Jessup T. Biggs is hired by an art collector the case seems simple at first. But truth wears many masks and the ceremonial drinking cup of a long dead king is attracting fortune hunters, voodoo whodats, shady ladies and deadly prophecy. Biggs needs this high profile investigation to pay off a serious gambling debt. His wife skedaddled and the bottom of a whiskey bottle is his last true friend. Fate and magic intermingle and become indistinguishable from reality. There might be a path out of this murderous maze, but it wont be easy or perfect. Personal discovery always has a price.

By kback In this, his first short novel, Ronnie Woodall nails every element of the tough-guy detective genre in the best traditions of Sam Spade. Set in 1950s Los Angeles, Private Detective Jessie Biggs finds himself caught up in the middle of a plot full of greed and exploitation, demonstrating the depths people are willing to go to for power and wealth. Biggs himself can be cynical and uncertain that he really believes in the code that he's been living by, but reaches beyond his usual skepticism to help others. Ronnie's understanding of the human condition and the many contradictions that make up an individual keep the reader wanting more. We hope he accommodates us.

Biggs is vivid, colorful, expressionistic and astounding in its imagery. This is Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler’s world as seen through the unflinching eyes of Charles Bukowski and Cormac McCarthy.Jessup T. Biggs ex-cop, hardboiled private eye, hard luck gambling addict, hard drinker and jaded philosopher is on the case. Like the antagonists of The Maltese Falcon, Biggs is in search of a lost relic. Unknown to Biggs his search is for a relic more elusive and more iconic than the golden bird. Told in a wry, lyrical style reminiscent of Philip Marlowe, the story begins the same year and in the same place Raymond Chandler died; California 1959.Biggs follows the case across the Southwest through Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana. Like a different Marlow, the one in Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” Biggs odyssey takes him deep into the jungles, not of the Congo, but of the Louisiana bayou, where he too will be confronted by a man who has become a god to his believers.Biggs is ultimately a man of action. His journey is an exciting, violent and dangerous adventure. But it’s also a journey of self-discovery and self-realization. Jessup T. Biggs returns to California, as a man whose luck has changed. And for a gambler, that’s all you can ask.Does he solve the case? Does he recover the lost relic? Does he save the girl? (And there is a girl.) I wouldn’t dream of depriving you of the opportunity of finding out for yourself. Reading this book was pure pleasure. Eloquent, suspenseful, gritty and intriguing, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

You hit a home run with this one, especially in voice, character, style, and conflict. Very effective use of conflict to drive this story into the dark thirsty swamps. I also enjoyed this trip because of the evocative language you use to get us into the piece as if we belonged there. I never looked up to see where I was because I knew I was right next to you, experiencing the whole thing right along with you in living color which is a real skill in this type of writing. Your on my list now, and I won't miss an opportunity to read you again. Thanks.

Best Ebook Jack Daniels and Associates: Planters Punch, A Jack Daniels, Duffy Dombrowski Mystery (Kindle Worlds Short Story), by Tom Schreck, J.A. Konrath

JA Konrath is the author of the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels mysteries, Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, and Cherry Bomb. Daniels is a Chicago homicide cop with a wicked sense of humor, and the novels fluctuate between funny business and serious suspense. Tom Schreck is the author of the Duffy Dombrowski mysteries, On the Ropes, TKO, and Out Cold. Duffy is a social worker by day and a semi-pro boxer by night, and he's quick with a left hook as he is with his wit. Planter's Punch is a 7500 word novella that features both Jack Daniels and Duffy Dombrowski. It also includes a bonus interview with the authors. Both Schreck and Konrath write funny, laugh out-loud mysteries without skimping on the action and suspense. Kirkus calls Duffy, "Warmhearted, tough, and funny" and Crimespree Magazine raves, "In the boxing match of life I want Duffy Dombrowski as my ring man." Booklist calls the Jack Daniels series, "A solid success for those who like to mix comedy and grit" and Library Journal calls Konrath, "Not to be missed."

By Periwinkle Blue I love Konrath and am working my way through his books -- and now I am adding Schreck to my favorite author list. This collection of short stories are entertaining and remind me of Chinese food -- fills you up for now, but you end up hungry again in a few hours to read more by these talented authors. Both Daniels and Dombrowski are tough and flawed, but with hearts that do care to make their world right. The cast of characters around them are fun and seem to remind me of people I know. The only complaint I have is regarding the formatting -- I wish this book had an active TOC; one I could click forward to the next story vs having to page forward (or back). I had previously read several of the short stories in another collection and wished there was an easy way to skip over them.Highly recommend! :)

If you don't know them, well go ahead and give them a try. You'll be hooked. Its just a fun book to read. Both the authors are very solid in their profession and you will be happy. Its a quick read with great characters from different story lines.

Dolan To quote George Costanza, "Worlds are colliding!"To quote Groucho Marx, "...and what a collision!"Schreck's 'Fearsome Foursome' is in the rarest of forms, the humor throughout is in the vein of previous works and better than ever ...and the action is fast, welcomed and exciting thanks to the switch between Jack's and Duffy's points-of-view from scene to scene.A great effort and a joy to peek into what must have been a joyful process of collaboration.

This fall, adults of all ages everywhere who feel stressed and unfocused are quieting their minds and souls by putting away the smart phones and tablets and picking up pencils, markers and crayons to color. At home, in waiting rooms, in churches, on road trips - coloring books for adults are becoming more and more popular. These coloring books for adults from Paraclete are not only a simple path to making something beautiful, it has a spiritual element as well. For any religious or spiritual seeker, coloring these 30 patterns, each paired with an uplifting Word of Faith and simple verse, will relax the mind and bless the heart. "Sometimes coloring is just coloring. To put crayons to paper and create a rainbow of marks and swaths is relaxing, playful, and maybe even artistically satisfying. But sometimes coloring is more. To put colored crayons, markers, or pencils to paper is to create a pathway to the numinous.  Coloring invites the body and the senses into an experience of inner stillness. While the hand moves, the mind and the body slow down. The heart and the ears open carving a space for rich silence and an opportunity for God to speak." —Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God

By Jenlwren I think the pages are very pretty and when you are done coloring the book, you will have a beautiful illustrated book of bible verse reflections, which you could even give as a personalized gift for another to enjoy. It is best to use colored pencils or a medium that will not bleed through. The pages are 7" wide x 8.5" tall.On the left side is a bible verse and a word. For example, LIGHT written in a flowing large script and below is the bible verse, "Now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)." Then on the right hand page is the letter L. This is not a book that tries to use every letter of the alphabet. For instance, there are several different letter L's to color interspersed throughout the book, with different words and bible verses accompanying them. (LOVE, LIGHT and LIFE) The first three are fittingly, FAITH, HOPE and LOVE. The book's emphasis is on inspiring words and verses, with an accompanying capital letter...much as monastic scribes would do. It's nicely done.

Out of the Dark, by Sharon Sala

From Publishers Weekly Readers who have come to appreciate Sala's predilection for controversial topics and her ability to skillfully convey their emotional impact will relish this but moving romantic suspense novel. Kidnapped by her upper-middle-class mother, who'd inexplicably "turned into some mushroom-smoking hippie named Ivy," six-year-old Jade Cochrane was prostituted to pedophiles following her mom's death and knew little of childhood besides life in a cult called The People of Joy. Now a gorgeous, albeit troubled, street painter in her late 20s, Jade unwittingly sets in motion a reunion with her long-lost father when she sells a painting to one of his vacationing friends. After Jade's tumultuous, highly publicized return to her loving father's arms, former cult members get wind of her whereabouts and threaten the seeming safety and happiness she's finally found with her father and kind-hearted security expert Luke Kelly. The use of flashbacks lends credibility to Jade's past and helps flesh out her character. Although Sala (Dark Water, etc.) has the tendency to overstate her points, which is evidenced by the book's de trop epilogue, she handles the sensitive issue of Jade's past with skill, never allowing her story to descend into melodrama. In short, this is the perfect entertainment for those looking for a suspense novel with emotional intensity. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Spellbinding narrative...Sala lives up to her reputation with this well-crafted thriller."

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Out of the Dark By AK Disillusioned by life, Margaret Cochrane finds an illusion of joy with the People of Love. Drawn in by their snake charming leader, Solomon, she steals her baby and leaves her husband, Sam, behind, never dreaming that instead of Heaven, she was consigning herself and her little girl, Jade, to Hell.Twenty five years later, Jade and her friend, Raphael, have escaped the People and been on the run for longer than they can remember. The art that sustains them will be their salvation. One of Margaret's acquaintances sees a portrait Jade did of her mother, and that is enough for Sam's detective friend, Luke, to find Jade. The years have left scars on Jade's soul. After her mother died, she became a commodity, sold to the pedophile who would pay the most. Only when maturity made her unappealing to that brand of pervert could she and Rafe escape. Yet, unknown to Jade, Rafe is dying because of what was done to him. Being found by Luke and Sam is an answer to his own prayers; now he knows he can leave Earth with Jade cared for, he just doesn't know how soon. Those who hurt them the most have seen the pictures as well, and want to silence the two runaways. When they kill Rafe, Luke becomes determined they won't do the same to the woman he's come to love.***** Light and dark contrast in this complex novel. Jade and Rafe will wrench your heart with the beauty of their souls. Somehow, both retain an innocence despite the hardness of their lives. A round of applause must go to Ms Sala for avoiding the overused angst that might be used in characterizing Jade and Luke's relationship. Overall, this novel is suspenseful, sweet, and hopeful all at once. *****

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Light on romance and suspense By K. Tunstall Sharon Sala's new romantic suspense is light on both romance and suspense, but two of her characters stand out with amazing depth. Jade, the lead of the story, and Raphael, her friend, share a convincing, complex relationship, built by the bonds of their past. If the lead character of Luke Kelly had been as carefully drawn as Raphael, and if his interaction with Jade has been as deep, it might be believable that the two end up together. As it is, her healing happens much too quickly to be believable, and there's so little substance to Luke that one wonders what she possibly sees in him.Their relationship is improbable, at best. By page 142, Luke is falling in love with Jade, despite hardly knowing her. So far, she's been alternately clingy and prickly--not much of a basis for a relationship. At this point in the book, she can't even stand for him to touch her, so what makes his heart pitter-patter for her?Despite its flaws, this book has memorable sections. Ms. Sala confronts head-on a topic one doesn't generally find in women's fiction. She handles child sexual abuse, lingering fear, and trying to heal all with grace, class, and sensitivity. Some passages of the book made me teary-eyed.I'd say this book might have been better as a straight suspense, rather than augmenting it with a romance, but that side of the plot falls flat too. The villains are predictable, the tension is non-existent, and the threads are woven together with too much coincidence to be plausible. One thing that really bothered me was the scenes where Luke confronts the antagonists. Regardless of his past as a cop, no police station would have let him interrogate the men.All in all, this is an average read, but lacking some of the componenents that would make it a fantastic book. Sadly, Ms. Sala seems to have joined the assembly line of authors producing romantic suspense, simply because it's popular, and not because it showcases her talent. Look for her older books if you want to see her shine.

11 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Pass on this one, there are better Sala books out there! By A Customer Maggie Cochrane steals away in the night with her young daughter, Jade, to join the cult known as the People of Joy. Within two years Maggie is dead and Jade is being used as a child prostitute by the leader of the group, Soloman. Her father, Sam, has never stopped looking for her and completely by a fluke he finds out where she is and he sends his friend, Luke, to find her. Luke brings Jade and her companion Rafe back to St. Louis and instead of a happy homecoming, a killer learns of her return and plots his revenge...I've been a long-time fan of this author and I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I couldn't. I don't have a problem with the subject matter rather my issues with this book stem from the improbable romance and poor research that was completed. The romance between Jade and Luke felt forced. How can a man fall in love with a woman he doesn't know, whom he has barely spoken to and she can't stand to be touched? He can't. They have no shared experiences nor common ground yet he's falling in love with her within a day of meeting her?Second - the research is off the mark with regards to police procedures. SWAT teams do not allow street officers to enter a house with them. That is a really good way for a street officer to get killed as they don't train with the SWAT team. Also - when called to the house of a dangerous person, street officers don't pull up and make themselves known as this book portrays. They park down the street and come in on foot under some sort of cover.I had numerous other problems such as the tone felt `preachy' with regards to religion and some of Jade's motivations are unclear and consequently she comes off as wishy-washy at times. I'd recommend you skip this book and pick up some of Sala's older work such as Chance McCall or Jackson Rule (writing as Dinah McCall)

The classic spy thriller of lethal computer-age intrigue and a maniac’s private cold war, featuring the same anonymous narrator and milieu of The IPCRESS File.

The fourth of Deighton’s novels to be narrated by the unnamed employee of WOOC(P) is the thrilling story of an anti-communist espionage network owned by a Texan billionaire, General Midwinter, run from a vast computer complex known as the Brain.

After having been recruited by Harvey Newbegin, the narrator travels from the bone-freezing winter of Helsinki, Riga and Leningrad, to the stifling heat of Texas, and soon finds himself tangling with enemies on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

‘Dazzlingly intelligent and subtle’ Sunday Times

‘Worthy of Raymond Chandler… intelligent… inventive… constantly entertaining’ Sunday Telegraph

‘Such credibility, such accurate line-by-line beaming of a sheer sense of the actual… a glittering, wintry entertainment’ The Guardian

‘Deighton is so far in the front of other writers in the field that they are not even in sight’ Sunday Times

About the Author

Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

From AudioFile Len Deighton's latest spy story has a totally implausible plot full of anti-communist fanatics, double agents and a computer which gives the operatives their instructions. It thankfully contains a large measure of wry humor and skepticism which help the listener appreciate the spoof. Paul Daneman takes on the international cast of British, Russian and American characters like old friends. His wide range of accents identify each speaker though the women and children sound a bit silly with squeaky voices. Daneman's pace follows the action and he performs with a polished smoothness and professionalism. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

North by Northeast By John Dziadecki The man with no name ("Harry Palmer" in the film versions) heads into global trouble in Helsinki, Leningrad, Riga, New York, San Antonio and London. His quary is a deluded, megalomanic nationalist who uses a giant computer and people in an attempt to free the Russian peole of their Soviet oppressors. Len Deighton takes us on a journey to the frozen north and across the pond to the US and back again on a rollercoaster journey filled with his brand of insight and deadpan humor levened with enough intrigue and disbelief to keep you hooked. This novel is the follow through of Deighton's "The Ipcress File" and "Funeral in Berlin".Readers either like or dislike the author's prose style and wry humor. Maybe you just need to be in the mood for it. Right now, I am and I like it. Great reading on a hot summer's day.

Kwak W.O.O.C.(P) is a discretely-located spying agency of the British Ministry of Defence, headed by a Mr. Dawlish. In "Spy Story" he is the owner of a pre-WW II car, in this book an expert on garden weeds. Its premises in Charlotte Street encompass floor after floor of ostensibly unattractive or failing businesses, behind whose doors the agency works, with the Dispatch Section always booming with brass band music. Dawlish is the only staff member with an office with two windows.A nameless but likable spy tells his story in the I form. He is sent by Dawlish to Scandinavia to find out more about rumours that could be detrimental to the UK, the US, the Soviet Union, even to world peace. His brief: "Find out more. If possible, infiltrate!" His tour includes Helsinki, Leningrad, Riga, New York and San Antonio, Texas. There he is introduced to the Billion Dollar Brain, a series of mainframe computers purported to have been programmed to prevent human error in intelligence operations. The Brain is owned not by the US government, but by a right-wing organisation headed by a naturalised, former Latvian general. If the planned operation targeting Latvia is successful, rows and rows of other primed and linked mainframes will take on the rest of the Soviet Union...The (somewhat implausible) plot is nevertheless great, and so are the characters and dialogues. KGB Colonel Stok (who earlier appeared in "Spy Story") catches the nameless hero in the Soviet Union, but realizes he needs him to stay alive to find out more and sends him home. But not before proving his admiration for the British WW II war effort by reciting at length from his favourite writer in English, the 18th-century Scottish poet Robert Burns. The enigmatic, extravert Finnish girl Signe, her American lover Harvey and the spy himself are interesting characters too. Descriptions of the different venues are also authentic.Len Deighton is also a renowned war historian. The terrible facts included in BDB about Latvian collaboration with Germany during WW II and its eagerness to play the role of executioner on its behalf, is most probably based on fact. Latvians, especially, should read and enjoy this book and provide comments.

Shades of "Seven Days in May" By Russ Burgos Part of the "Harry Palmer" series -- though the character is only "Harry Palmer" in the films -- by Len Deighton. Of them, this was the least convincing to me as a story. Deighton tries to bring the real world into the fictional one by having "Harry" -- or our MOOC(P) Op -- take on a fanatical right-wing militia funded by a billionaire whose goal is to force the USA and USSR into a conflict he expects the USA to win. The plot seems forced, and Deighton seemed to be trying just a bit too hard with this one.

In Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, Max Liebermann is at the forefront of psychoanalysis, practicing the controversial new science with all the skill of a master detective. Every dream, inflection, or slip of tongue in his “hysterical” patients has meaning and reveals some hidden truth. When a mysterious and beautiful medium dies under extraordinary circumstances, Max’s good friend, Detective Oskar Rheinhardt, calls for his expert assistance. The medium’s body has been found in a room that can only be locked from the inside. Her body has been shot, but there’s no gun and absolutely no trace of a bullet. On a table lies a suicide note, claiming that there is “such a thing as forbidden knowledge." All signs point to a supernatural killer, but Liebermann the scientist is not so easily convinced.Set in the Vienna of Freud, Klimt, and Mahler, a time of unprecedented activity in the worlds of philosophy, science, and art, A Death in Vienna is an elegantly written novel, taut with suspense and rich in historical details.

A Death in Vienna, by Dr. Frank Tallis Dr.

From Publishers Weekly British author Tallis (Love Sick) sets his intelligent murder mystery in the stormy, atmospheric Austrian capital at the turn of the 20th century. Psychoanalyst Max Lieberman, a contemporary of Freud's, takes time out of his busy schedule treating hysterics to help his friend Det. Oskar Rheinhardt solve the perplexing case of a beautiful medium found dead in a locked room on the day of her weekly séance. She's left a suicide note and died of a gunshot to the heart, but there's no weapon or bullet in her body. Rheinhardt is certain she's been murdered, and as he interviews each of her clients, he uncovers a number of potential suspects with motive enough for murder—but without the know-how to accomplish this impossible deed. Midway through the investigation, one of the medium's clients is bludgeoned to death in his sleep—also inside a locked room. Despite Rheinhardt's superior sleuthing and Lieberman's keen observational and analytical abilities, the murderer and the key to his modus operandi elude them until help comes from an unlikely source. Tallis convincingly animates Lieberman and Rheinhardt in a picturesque Vienna roiling with cultural and intellectual change. (Mar.) From Booklist Too many characters crowd this otherwise clever whodunit set in turn-of-the-century Vienna. The circumstances of medium Charlotte Lowenstein's murder befuddle Detective Oskar Rheinhardt from the start: her body is found in a room locked from the inside. She has been shot, but there's evidence of neither a bullet nor a gun. Rheinhardt decides to consult his longtime friend, psychoanalyst Max Liebermann. Although all signs point to a supernatural killer, Liebermann, who puts a premium on hypnosis, dreams, and accidental utterances (Freudian slips), isn't so sure. He interviews members of Fraulein Lowenstein's seance circle, some of whom seemed more drawn to her beauty than her credentials in the occult. Among them: a nervous banker, a neurotic locksmith, an unkempt count, and a lustful stage magician who fled the city shortly after the crime. Tallis is a clinical psychologist and an expert on obsessive behavior, and his third novel is worth reading, not so much for the story as for the atmospheric renderings of the Viennese cafe scene (including many mouth-watering mentions of pastry) and for cameo appearances by Mahler and Freud. Review "An engrossing portrait of a legendary period as well as a brain teaser of startling perplexity . . . In Tallis’s sure hands, the story evolves with grace and excitement. . . . A perfect combination of the hysterical past and the cooler–but probably more dangerous–present" --Chicago Tribune"[An] elegant historical mystery . . . stylishly presented and intelligently resolved." -- The New York Times Book Review"[A Death in Vienna is] a winner for its smart and flavorsome fin-de-siècle portrait of the seat of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and for introducing Max Liebermann, a young physician who is feverish with the possibilities of the new science of psychoanalysis." -- The Washington Post"Frank Tallis knows what he’s writing about in this excellent mystery. . . . His writing and feel for the period are top class." -- The Times (London)

Like the city's famed waltz, Frank Tallis moves his book, "A Death in Vienna," along at the perfect tempo. The year is 1902, and Vienna is at its height of social and scientific development. Tallis uses all the history and social background of the city to infuse his story and characters with a historical interest that at times makes the central murder almost secondary to the setting. Almost...for the twists and turns and inscrutable details of the murder are never too far from our minds, whether we are sitting with the characters in a Viennese cafe enjoying its famous coffees and pastries or sitting in a darkened room for a seance with the dead medium.Ultimately, the story rests on not only this fantastic setting, but also all of the strong characters that Tallis has created here: the dead medium, Fraulein Lowenstein; the detective, Oskar Rheinhardt; the psychologist, Max Liebermann, follower of none other than Sigmund Freud, who makes his appearance here too, albeit briefly. This story captures the tug of war between criminology and psychology, between the paranormal and the scientific, between the old and the forces of change that have engulfed the city during this time frame. They are all played out through the mysterious circumstances of Lowenstein's death and the subsequent investigation by Rheinhardt, aided by his good friend Herr Doctor Liebermann. The beautiful Lowenstein's prime suspects are her seance circle, an unusual group of people who reflect a wide range of personalities and quirks. Through Tallis's story, we see a complete society of Vienna, the triumphs of the new century and the social problems yet to be resolved. This is a period setting rich in appeal, and where other stories may be dragged down by historical detail, this one thrives because of it. Tallis uses every bit of Viennese familiarity to draw us in, and then uses the mystery to keep us going. We become engaged with the charming Rheinhardt-Liebermann duo as they follow the leads, using every "modern" method to discern the truth about the murder. In the end, the answers to the murder mystery come from a most unlikely source.Unlike many of the thrillers of today, this book relies on character development and setting to build a strong story, showing just how unnecessary the technology of the day is to creating and solving a good mystery. The book is easy to follow, interesting, and well told. That we come away smarter than we began is just an added bonus.

Lozar In general, I greatly enjoyed this book, both as a character study and as a portrait of a fascinating time and place. The author knows turn-of-the-(20th)-century Vienna well, both the social and political issues that people were dealing with and the nitty-gritty details of daily life, but he uses his knowledge to create a believable setting for the story rather than becoming pedantic. His understanding of the cross-currents in the nascent psychoanalytic movement gives the story depth. Dr. Max Liebermann is an intriguing character because he embodies many of the contradictions of that time and place: he's a rebel in his profession, and his artistic tastes run to the avant-garde; but he's also a member of a prosperous Jewish family and community to whom he's strongly loyal. The detective Rheinhardt is less complicated, but his friendship with Dr. Liebermann is based on a shared love of music as well as their fascination with the human mind, so it rang true to me. I felt that the mystery itself wasn't all that strong: any reader who's familiar with the genre could figure out the disappearing bullet and the locked room rather easily, although the author did a good job of dropping hints and red herrings to keep you guessing who done it. I quibbled with some of the psychoanalytic material, e.g., multiple personalities usually develop from a long history of abuse, not ... well, the way it happens here. And I concur with other readers that the author's use of short chapters became confusing -- I disagree that there are "too many characters," but the choppy narrative made it hard to remember what X was doing the last time we met him. All in all, however, it's a good story, well written, and I'm hooked enough now to read the next novel in the series.

Bukowsky Frank Tallis's "A Death in Vienna" features psychiatrist Max Liebermann, who is a disciple of Sigmund Freud. Vienna is a cosmopolitan capital that delights the senses with its beautiful music, architectural wonders, scenic vistas, and culinary delights. It is also the birthplace of psychoanalysis, of which Max is an expert practitioner, much to the disdain of his superior, Professor Wolfgang Gruner. Gruner prefers to treat hysteria with electricity, while Max feels that it is far more productive and humane to to help his patients by exploring their dreams and subconscious memories.Max's best friend and confidante is Detective Oskar Reinhardt, who often calls on Max for his expert opinion. It seems that Max's superior powers of observation and his expertise in diseases of the mind make him an excellent amateur sleuth. Oskar presents his friend with a enigma involving a beautiful young woman, Charlotte Lowenstein, who is found dead in her sitting room. She was apparently shot, but no bullet or exit wound was found. In addition, suicide can be ruled out, since there there was no murder weapon at hand. To make matters even more bewildering, the sitting room door was locked from the inside and no one could have climbed out of the window. Since Charlotte was a medium who frequently conducted seances, some people suspect that a supernatural force killed her. However, Max scoffs at this idea and he sets out to help his friend solve the crime. In addition, Max is preoccupied with treating a patient named Amelia Lydgate, who is suffering from partial paralysis. He uses hypnosis in an attempt to uncover the source of his patient's distress.Frank Tallis has written an engaging novel that is also a travelogue of Vienna in the late nineteenth century. Max is an appealing character, who is courageous, brilliant, insightful, and compassionate. His friendship with Oskar extends not only to professional matters, but the two also enjoy music, meals, drinks, and cigars together. Oskar is a happily married man whom Max intends to emulate when he settles down with the woman he has been seeing, the lovely Clara Weiss."A Death in Vienna" is a clever "locked room" mystery with a truly ingenious solution. Tallis depicts his large cast of characters with flair, and he includes pointed social commentary about the political situation in Vienna, the role of women during the turn of the century, and the ugly specter of anti-Semitism that was already poisoning the atmosphere in Austria. The book has a cliffhanger ending which will entice readers to stay tuned for the next installment in this series.

From the Tom Clancy of a new generation, a debut thriller following two CIA outcasts who must race to stop a secret Chinese weapon that threatens to provoke a world war. After her first assignment in Venezuela goes disastrously awry, rookie case officer Kyra Stryker is brought back to Langley to work in the Red Cell, the CIA’s out-of-the-box think tank. There she’s paired with Jonathan Burke, a straight-laced analyst who’s alienated his colleagues with his unorthodox methods and a knack for always being right, political consequences be damned. Stryker and Burke’s only lead is the top CIA asset in China, codenamed Pioneer. But when Pioneer reports that Chinese security has him under surveillance, Stryker is offered a chance for redemption by extracting him before he’s arrested and executed. The answers he holds could mean the difference between peace in the Pacific or an escalating global conflict. From CIA headquarters to the White House to a Navy carrier in the South China Sea, Red Cell takes readers on a whirlwind race against time as Stryker and Burke work to save Pioneer and discover the hidden threat to America’s power: China’s top secret weapon. Red Cell: A Novel, by Mark Henshaw

Review CIA analyst Henshaw s assured debut, an exciting espionage thriller, puts him solidly in the ranks of the top writers of the genre. Henshaw deftly weaves together all the major and minor players the U.S., Chinese, and Taiwanese governments; the spies who provide information; and the analysts who turn that information into intelligence. The masterfully handled battle at the end is worthy of Tom Clancy. "Publishers Weekly" (starred review)"Red Cell"is as smart as it is exciting, a thriller that makes you think from the edge of your seat. Mark Henshaw s unique perspective from the inside makes it all feel terrifyingly real. Howard Gordon, co-creator of "Homeland" and author of "Hard Target"Mark Henshaw clearly knows the terrain, from the geopolitical to the tradecraft in the shadows. I'm surprised this made it past the CIA censors. A rock solid thriller as plausible as tomorrow's headlines. Brad Taylor, "New York Times" bestselling author of "One Rough Man" and "All Necessary Force"If you re looking for a great, authentic and thrilling story, look no further. Lock the door and turn off the phone, because you re going on a journey only a gifted insider like Mark Henshaw could take you on. This author is a rare double threat a man with the knowledge and access few have, and the rare talent as a writer to bring it to life. If you want to learn how things really work when it hits the fan, you can apply for a job at the CIA or read Mark s book. David Ayer, screenwriter of "Training Day "and "S.W.A.T."Mark Henshaw is the real deal and he delivers big-time in his debut novel "Red Cell". Only a decorated CIA analyst like Henshaw could take you this deep into the psyche of CIA operatives and even deeper into one of the most dangerous and imminent geopolitical flashpoints of our times. If the events Henshaw plays out on the pages of his novel have not already taken place in secret, they may well play out in public sooner rather than later. Mr. President, this intelligence briefing is worth your special attention. Thomas Greanias, "New" "York Times" bestselling author of "Dominus Dei"

By Bobbewig The decision to read Red Cell, Mark Henshaw's debut thriller, seemed like a no-brainer for me. It received a very high rating from an Amazon Friend whose opinions I trust a lot, plus it had the following checklist of qualities that usually guarantees a high rating from me:...Clancy-esque...Ripped-from-the headlines political intrigue...Credible espionage scenarios...Realistic military action, and...Modern high-tech weaponry.Based on these factors, I had high expectations for an exciting reading experience.Overall, however, "at the end of the day" I was only moderately satisfied with Red Cell. While it did perform well enough in delivering most of the above-mentioned qualities, I was somewhat disappointed in the book's character development and in its narrative style. Henshaw's main characters never came "fully to life" for me. For the most part, I felt that the characters were just serviceable enough to move the exciting plot along, but they never really became people I got to know well enough and, thus, care much about. Further, and perhaps the bigger issue for me, was that Henshaw uses an almost diary-like narrative approach to tell the story; which resulted in too little dialogue and the plot shifting gears every few pages, making it seem more interruptive than exciting.I know my review is "going against the grain" of most reviews to-date, but I hope it gives you additional ammunition in helping decide if Red Cell is a book for you.

Smart, scary, edge-of-your-seat debut thriller that will keep you up all night reading By Bookreporter A new CIA think tank named "Red Cell" was created in the hours following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers. The idea behind Red Cell was and is to take an out-of-the-box approach when considering issues of geopolitical import. Mark Henshaw is a former member of that think tank, and it shows in this smart, scary, edge-of-your-seat debut thriller that will keep you up all night reading and worrying.RED CELL begins when a meeting in Caracas, Venezuela between a CIA agent and an intelligence asset goes off the rails. The agent is a rookie CIA case officer named Kyra Stryker; she is extracted from the snafu safely, but with injuries. While still recuperating, she is brought back to Langley and assigned to Red Cell by CIA Director Kathy Cooke. Stryker is paired with the think tank's only other member, a brilliant but extremely eccentric analyst named Jonathan Burke, whose unorthodox research methods and approaches, combined with his offsetting personality and the fact that he's always right, tend to alienate almost everyone. Remember the kid who constructed the great things out of Legos in kindergarten, but wouldn't let anyone else play with them? That was Burke.Oddly enough, Stryker and Burke hit it off. Stryker is secure enough in her own abilities, which consist of reading people and reacting to their expressions, to appreciate Burke's results, his abrasiveness notwithstanding. Burke senses a wide and deep intelligence in Stryker that might equal his own, even if it manifests itself in different ways. The Red Cell team quickly gets their baptism by fire when a team of spies from mainland China is apprehended and incarcerated in Taiwan. The mainland Chinese use the incident as a reason for initiating the long-feared invasion of Taiwan, notwithstanding its alliance with the United States. The CIA has no idea why China no longer fears the threat of reprisal by the U.S. Navy. Its only chance of discovering the why of it all is a CIA intelligence asset in the highest levels of the Chinese government; codenamed Pioneer, he is under suspicion and surveillance by the Chinese government. Stryker is assigned to walk point on a mission to extract Pioneer from China and find out what he knows before he is arrested and executed by his own government, and before the world is brought to the brink of another world war.RED CELL has it all. If you like tales of espionage, this book is loaded with clandestine moves, real-world tradecraft, and incidents that ring so true that it's hard to believe they passed the vetting process. If military thrillers are your thing, this novel provides plenty of red meat. When and if China ever invades Taiwan, it's hard to imagine the attack occurring in any way other than the manner in which it's described here. As exciting as the plot and execution may be, however, the chemistry --- and subtle relationship triangle --- that is slowly formed among Stryker, Burke and Cooke is worth the price of admission all by itself.Burke, especially, is an extremely riveting character, a wise guy in a number of different ways who is always on the brink of a revelation. Stryker is an extremely capable agent whose inexperience is balanced by a skill set that is partially inherent and partially acquired. And Cooke? She sensed a good fit and brought them together, and is now tasked with riding herd on them or setting them loose, and being wise enough to know when to do either.Henshaw's vision is cinematic in presentation. One could see it as a television series that has a chance to be almost as good as the book and, hopefully, its successors.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub on May 25, 2012

Just read the prologue and you will understand why I couldn't put the book down. This was a well researched spy thriller. It had all the components of a great read including action, plots and subplots, fast moving scenes from Venezuela to Beijing and back to Langley. Other reviewers discussed the plot. All I can say is that Henshaw has a promising career in the spy thriller genre. In terms of enjoyment, I would compare him to Clancy, Ken Follett, Alex Berenson, and Daniel Silva. I can't wait till his second novel comes out. This is a must read.

Ms. Willis provided enough background information on the characters to inform, but not bore the reader. There were some laugh-out-loud moments, mystery, twists and turns, and suspense. Madison Reynolds finds herself widowed and penniless, but she is determined to support her family. She and her twins move back home to The Sisters, Texas into her eighty-year-old grandmother’s home. Madison opens In a Pinch Temporary Services and her first real job is at Gleason Poultry Farm. When Madison shows up for work the first day, she discovers Mr. Gleason body. There are several graphic descriptions of the body, but there is no foul language, graphic violence, or inappropriate adult situations in this book. A local man is arrested for the murder and his mother hires Madison to prove his innocence. She begins an amateur investigation and puts her life in jeopardy. I was kept guessing the identity of the murderer until the end. I would recommend this book and hope there will be more books in this series.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Maddie had gone to her home town to her grandmothers house with her twin children a boy and girl when her husband died and left her almost penniless. What is she to do. She opens a temporary business and her first job is to walk the chicken houses. That shouldn't be hard should it? Smelly and Nasty but dangerous Never. Until on her first day of work she finds her boss dead on the floor of the chicken house. Thing go crazy from there. The mother of the man thought to kill him hires her to find out who did kill the man and she finds out that she is in water over her head. While doing that she is working in a car dealership and a insurance company. While Maddie is trying to find the killer and stay alive he daughter is whining about going back to Dallas and her son is trying to find out what girls in the class is NOT related to him. Sisters Texas is not a uninteresting town and you will find everything you want to find or not find going on.I loved the book.

Madison starts up a temp business and while getting it started she will do just about anything, but taking care of chicken houses wasn't exactly what she had in mind. To make things worse on her first day she finds the body of her boss in one of the chicken houses. The woman whose son is accused of the murder tries to hire Madison to prove that he is innocent. After trying to convince the woman she is not qualified as a private investigator, the woman still insists. Madison tells her she will do the best she can and she means it. But getting to the bottom of who killed him isn't easy. A great start to a series.* I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author Before Alan stepped off the corporate merry-go-round, he had an eclectic (some might say disjointed) career. As an engineer, he worked on nuclear submarines, supervised assembly workers in factories, facilitated technology transfer from the Star Wars program, and learned to stack washing machines three high in a warehouse with a forklift. He even started his own recycling and waste reduction newsletter business. Now he writes fiction. Alan is the author of the Agatha-nominated DIAMONDS FOR THE DEAD. He also wrote KILLER ROUTINE and DEADLY CAMPAIGN in the Last Laff Mystery Series. As Zak Allen, he's written THE TASTE, FIRST TIME KILLER, and RIDE-ALONG.

I have always been secretly proud of my skill at spotting the plot devices and knowing exactly how a book was going to turn out. RUNNING FROM THE PAST stymied me. This plot was unlike any other I've read - fresh, interesting, intelligent, real. As a counselor by training, I thought the human experience that Orloff unfolded was spot on as past incidents heavily influenced present perception and more importantly present actions and inactions. Enjoy!

By Joseph Souza, Author of Crime Thriller, NEED TO FIND YOU The past is what motivates Colby Walker, the defining character in this suspenseful novel. While vacationing with his family, and his son’s best friend, Jess, Colby discovers that Jesse has been abused by his father. Revisiting the horrors of his own childhood abuse, Colby decides, against his wife’s better judgment, to kidnap the abused boy.Colby has cashed out his company and made millions from the deal. But his long hours at work have created a distance between himself and his family. Now with plenty of time on his hand, he feels the need to assert his control over them. His quest to save Jess from his abusive father becomes an all-consuming passion, to the exclusion of his wife and children. This is the creepy part of RUNNING FRM THE PAST. Colby’s childhood abuse drives his obsession to save Jesse. The questions he asked the boy that made me at times squirm. He pries and sticks his neck out in the wrong places. His decision to kidnap Jess seems honorable, but it puts his family in jeopardy. One wonders if this is transference. It also begs the question: to what degree does the past affect our everyday decisions? How far are willing to go to save another troubled soul? This is a fast paced book with interesting family dynamics. A sub-plot with Jesse’s aunt is less effective, but it does not distract from the powerful message of childhood abuse. While reading this, I found myself wondering what I would do in a similar situation. And that’s the highest compliment.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put it down By Marilyn R. I don't write many reviews but this is a definite must read. I found myself unable to put it down and finished in two days. Anyone with siblings can relate to the brother-sister teasing/torture and parental exasperation of the Walkers. While taking their son's best friend, Jess, along on the family vacation they are confronted with the evidence of Jess having been abused at the hands of his father and they are conflicted. When the abusive father starts hunting them down to get his son back past memories and the current fears collide for an edge of you seat ending. I would highly recommend this book.

Best Ebook PDF Death and Taxes, by David Dodge

The first novel from one of the greatest of mystery writers, the man who would later go on to write TO CATCH A THIEF. Often compared to Dashiell Hammett, David Dodge's urbane writing style stands the test of time. His novels still show the hallmarks of being fresh, fast-paced and witty. Whit Whitney is the last person you’d want to meet. The taxman is no one’s best friend. But in 1940’s San Francisco, there’s a price to pay for murder, romance, and heavy drinking, and the taxman turned detective is coming to collect. Hilarious and twisty, Dodge’s first novel is among his best, and makes for a terrific introduction to one of last century’s greatest talents in mystery.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Great entree into this four book series, and the new release is nicely done By Jeff David Dodge wrote a lot of mystery and adventures novels in the middle of the last century. He wrote three series I'm aware of, and the longest one of them involves a very unlikely hero, a tax accountant named Whit Whitney. In Death and Taxes, it falls to Whitney to uncover who killed his partner in the accounting firm they owned, and made the partner's pretty bride, whom he treated shabbily, a widow. The action takes place in San Francisco and Dodge knows the city very well. Like the successor in the series, Shear the Black Sheep, Death and Taxes is a genuine whodunit. In the last two books in the series, Bullets for the Bridegroom and It Ain't Hay, we know who the villain is; the suspense is about how Whitney will bring him to justice.Since this is a series, there is no spoiler in telling you that Whitney triumphs in the end, against a murderer who does a good job of hiding his identity until the end. You might also expect that Whitney develops a love interest for his partner's widow as well. The resolution of the plot is logical and satisfying, and you'll learn a little bit about the income tax code back then. If you think taxes are high now, the top marginal rate in the '50's was 90!Of the three series, I like the three book series involving South American adventurer Al Colby a bit more, but this is a great series and a great place to get to know David Dodge/

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dodge's First Novel Is A Solid Read By Dave Wilde David Dodge, before he became famous for "It Takes A Thief," began his writing career with "Death And Taxes," the first of four novels starring a CPA in San Francisco. This book was written in 1941 an the succeeding three books in the series written in 1942 ("Shear the Black Sheep"), 1944 (Bullets for the Bridegroom"), and 1946 ("It Ain't Hay"). It took nearly a decade after publishing his first book for Dodge to become well-known as a writer and for his craft to fully develop. Dodge worked as an accountant before turning full time to writing and appropriate his first series of books feature an accountant as the unlikely protagonist.Whitney, was a hard-drinking CPA with a strong right cross who was not going to let go of a murder case after his partner was murdered. His partner, "George MacLeod had a bankroll, a good-looking brunette wife, and a weakness for blondes. He did pretty good in both fields until he got involved with a girl with yellow hair and tax troubles." What a terrific pulpy opening to a novel! With gangsters, bootleggers, a pair of playboy-type accountants, and a mystery having to do with taxes, tax refunds, and, of course, murder, Dodge was off and running with his first novel. The story involves a bootlegging fortune, a gorgeous blonde heiress, bullets, gunfire, and more. As others have noted, this series is not as good a read as Dodge's later series about Al Colby in Latin America, but who else would have an accountant as his hero in a hardboiled novel?

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A five star read! By T.S Pitt Set in late1930’s San Francisco, Dodge weaves a charming and thoroughly entertaining mystery around the intricacies of tax and the prohibition era. The storey has booze, babes, duplicity and murder with a half million in cash thrown in for good measure; a five star read!
