The latest installment in an acclaimed series is now available!

Every face hides a secret. Every legend tells a lie. Conor McBride has accepted bargains he may live to regret - assuming he lives through them at all. He's taken an undercover assignment in exchange for the chance to resume his career as a solo violinist. He's also agreed to a proposal from the woman he loves, but it isn't the type he had in mind. When their simple mission turns complicated, Conor and Kate discover everyone is hiding something - secrets as twisted as the fabled lanes of an old world city. Unraveling them will be anything but simple, or safe.

Excerpt:

As soon as night falls, darkness becomes your weapon. Use it, or you’ll find it used against you. She scrambled up the steep incline, repeating the words to herself like a mantra, like a prayer she was trying to believe in, willing them to produce the effect she needed. Invisibility. Concealment. When Conor had offered this advice—his face solemn, as if reciting a piece of ancient wisdom—she’d tried to match his mood, but ended up annoying him with an ill-timed giggle. Kate wasn’t laughing now. The situation was more frightening than anything she’d prepared for, and her strategy was unraveling. Instead of heading for the summit she should have taken the last side trail to slip back along a different route. She’d realized her mistake a few minutes earlier, when the forested mountainside began dropping away. It seemed as though the unseen hand of an artist was rubbing at the scenery, thinning the composition. The higher she climbed, the fewer the trees. Eventually, there would be none. She would emerge like wild game flushed from its cover—a solid, unobstructed target. It was too late to double back now, but with the cloud cover of a March evening speeding its arrival, the weapon she’d been waiting for finally appeared. Darkness. It poured over the mountain, an inky tide arriving exactly on time. Within a shrinking sphere of visibility Kate paused to listen for a sign of pursuit. Earlier, she’d been able to detect it—a distant thump of booted feet on the trail, more vibration than sound. Methodical. Relentless. The beat of it in the ground under her feet had unnerved her, but its absence was worse. Pebbles from eroding stone shifted beneath her feet. She cringed at the rattle echoing through the otherwise silent forest. Scrambling up the final steep section of rock, she pulled herself onto an outcrop of ledge and stood motionless on the summit. At the corner of her eye something shivered in a thicket of evergreens, and she spun to face it. A bird? A rustle of wind? Something else? Kate focused on the indistinct shape of the trees, but the movement had subsided. She relaxed and took a long breath, wiping the sweat from her forehead, but when she turned he was right there, his dark figure filling the space in front of her, extinguishing what light remained. She screamed and reflexively took a step away, then felt herself toppling back over the ledge. A hand shot out and yanked her forward. She heard him grunt as one of her windmilling arms connected with his chin. Off-balance himself, he slammed her onto the ground and fell on top of her. Kate landed hard, flat on her back, and felt the air explode from her lungs like a shot being fired. This is one of the best series I have read and I am an avid reader. There are so many great characters in this book. All of the fringe people are wonderful to read about too and they've added another one I think will be in future books. "Winnie". Love the little guy. This one was a real pleasure to read and can only hope you keep them coming fast and furious and I'll keep reading them.

Lawhern This is the third of Kathryn Guare's books that I've taken on as a Beta reader. In fairness to those who may read this review, I'd have to 'fess up to being one of her fans. We talked about the City of a Thousand Spies when it was in Beta draft, and my name is in her acknowledgements. That being said, I became and remain a fan because Guare is one of the most literate and visually nuanced independent authors I've read in recent years. She can paint a word picture of unfamiliar places that brings them alive in your head, right down to the smell of exotic spices in the air. I don't pass out a lot of 5-star ratings, but all three of her books have deserved them.In the City of a Thousand Spies, Guare follows Conor and Kate from the quietude of her Vermont inn, through her MI-5 "short course" in covert intelligence methods, and then into their first joint mission in Eastern Europe. Though advertised by Conor's MI-5 handler as a simple agent extraction mission, the exercise quickly turns complicated and dangerous as other players turn out to have their own dark agendas. "Dark" also describes some of the other characters and themes. There is plenty here to make a reader stretch to keep clear the connections within the labyrinth of spies and wanna-be's who inhabit Conor's world. If I have a single quibble with Ms Guare's book, it would be that we're only peripherally introduced to the Princess Sophie-Marie, Cate's grandmother and a grande dame in her own right. Having dumped millions from a trust fund into Cate's lap, the Princess disappears into the mist. I also think we need to hear more of "Winnie", a thoroughly humorous (though not entirely hapless) novice to the spy business. So go to work on those loose ends, Kathryn -- Bring on Book Four post haste.

High quality -- another great entry in the series By Karen Myers As each new book in the series comes out, I worry that this time, it can't be as good as the last, but once again I was wrong. I would never have believed that you could bring Kate from book 2 into Conor's professional life, but Guare does an excellent job of doing just that. This series is excellent. Satisfying, intriguing, and always absorbing. Very highly recommended.

Cut and Thrust: A Stone Barrington Novel, by Stuart Woods

From Booklist Politics and peril mix in the newest Stone Barrington outing, which features a crucial assist from another familiar Woods’ hero, Santa Fe lawyer Ed Eagle. Stone and his sidekick, Dino, have traveled to Los Angeles, along with Kate Rule Lee, the First Lady–cum–CIA director, who is seeking the presidential nomination on the Democratic ticket. Her competition includes the lascivious vice president and a senator from New Mexico, whom Ed is in town to support. Political maneuvering isn’t the only thing Stone and his friends are facing: someone has sent a death threat via e-mail to the head of Kate’s Secret Service detail, and Ed’s murderous ex-wife, Barbara, is in town, as thirsty for Ed’s blood as ever. Luckily, Stone has his own canny instincts to go on as well as a powerful ally in Billy Burnett, a former CIA operative and enemy of the state for whom Stone secured a pardon. There’s more than enough action and intrigue to keep the pages turning in this exhilarating outing. --Kristine Huntley

47 of 48 people found the following review helpful. I have read him for years and have noticed that his books keep getting worse - almost childish in content By Thomas W. Blackburn Without a doubt, this is the last Stuart Woods book that I will buy! I have read him for years and have noticed that his books keep getting worse - almost childish in content. I recently read one of his earlier books (Run Before the Wind - 1983 - his 4th book) and it was absolutely wondeful. It is hard to believe that he has gone from a talented writer to one who rests on his laurels and now churns out crap. He sure takes the easy way out now. No substance, trite story lines, and too much into threading his political views into his troublesome storylines. I think that he has finally hit the bottom. Time to retire your pen!

65 of 70 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely horrific By Victor M. Labella I want my money back. What a joke! Okay, let's summarize. Stone is now having sexual relations with a different girl. Billy tries to assassinate a sicko women, who is the ex-wife of Stone's friend. Then 2 cops enter storyline and that goes nowhere. Then those cops earlier know both of the psycho's names and then which hotel to go to without any reference in book and the book then mentions they knew about the house for sale without, again,no mention or prelude. Unbelievable!! Then the cops know she left for either London or Oakland. But I guess the book was about Kate Rule getting pregnant and democratic nomination. No suspense, intrigue or who-done-it!! What a waste of my day.

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Enough By Ginia I keep telling myself to quit wasting my money and time with Stuart Woods. With this one I finally got the message. Whatever happened to the author who wrote 'Under The Lake'?

But now, a university dig in Montana headed by paleontologists Quinn McCauley and Katrina Alpert threatens to expose the secret Galileo unearthed, the event that caused him to turn his study to the stars, and the hidden reason the scientist was convicted of heresy by the Inquisition.McCauley and Alpert find themselves in a global game of cat-and-mouse, seeking answers for a mystery that has endured for centuries, hunted for what they might discover.OLD EARTH weighs age-old arguments between science and religion in a tense thriller that spans time and questions recorded history."A high energy combination of history and intrigue, and last but not least, a great book to bring along the next time you travel." ―Peter Greenberg, CBS News Travel Editor"OLD EARTH's richly detailed and unique premise will delight fans of Dan Brown and Michael Crichton." ―CJ Lyons, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I particularly enjoyed the debates between Professor Quinn McCauley and the group ... By It's About The Book Fascinating story. A little slow in places, but fascinating just the same. I particularly enjoyed the debates between Professor Quinn McCauley and the group of graduate students he had taken with him on the archeological dig in Montana about the age of Earth. Quinn insisted that, even though they were all scientists, they seriously discuss the arguments by the religious advocates of the biblical justifications for Young Earth. That was an engrossing, page turning section of the story.Unfortunately, not everything was that engaging. The “bad guys” protecting the “past” were not well developed, with no compelling reason for them to work so hard and violently to suppress the discoveries. This book has been compared by others to works by Dan Brown and Michael Crichton. I don’t agree. This book, while having some similar characters…don’t they all?…is pretty unique. I would have liked to have seen more of the interesting grad students and a lot less of the old documents about Galileo and his battles with the Catholic Church. Then there is Autem Semita, the self appointed group tasked 400 years earlier with hiding any discoveries that might expose “Old Earth” and her secrets. The hopeful successor to the leadership of the group, Mr. Kavanaugh, is nearly pitiful in his greed for power. There was nothing about this group and these men that indicated any true commitment, just the desire that others never know what they know. I would have liked to have found some little morsel of sympathy, or even interest, in their point of view. I never did. The comparison to the Church’s repression of science was inevitable.Having said all that, I did enjoy this book. It was very nicely written…a great read for anyone who likes a romping good adventure with a conspiracy theory theme. If you’re looking for a romance, you might be disappointed, though.

There is nothing light and fun about Old Earth. It’s an intriguing and thought provoking thriller that takes you on a journey through time.I really enjoyed Old Earth but it took me a very long time to read it. This is not a book that can be read quickly or without thought – every conversation, every word has meaning – and, you need to savor every word.My biggest concern before reading this was that the science versus religion argument would offend me. However, I can say that they way in which Mr. Grossman wrote Old Earth presented facts from both sides and characters held strong opinions but that he didn’t write anything that would try to sway a reader to either side, he just used them to tell an amazing story.Book Details:Genre: ThrillerPublished by: Diversion BooksPublication Date: 3/10/2015Number of Pages: 419ISBN: 9781626816336Source: This book came to me from a Partners In Crime Virtual Book Tour, although I am paid to assist in the management of tours I am in no way expected to review books. Old Earth By Marablaise Galileo Galilei makes in 1601 a discovery in the mountains of eastern Italy that could cause turmoil over the world; that could bring down governments and shatter people's faith in religions. In the present time a group of people on a university dig in Montana headed by paleontologist Quinn McCauley stumbles over a discovery that a secret group of people for over 400 years have done everything to keep a secret and the secret group will do anything to stop the discovery to be revealed. They stopped Galilei and they have stopped everyone else that has been close to discover the secret during the centuries. McCauley and fellow paleontologist Katrina Alpert tries to understand what they have found in the mountains at the same time is running out for them...the group will stop at nothing to keep the secret from getting out.Wow! If I would summarize this book would wow be the right word. I would definitely use the world for the ending. I have a weakness for adventures books with secret societies and wild chases across the world. Hell, books like this is probably the only genre that over the top is a good thing. In an adventure's thriller the story should be over the top, the characters should be thrown into impossible situations and I don't even mind if the main characters get a bit close together in the heat of the moment, well as long as they don't decide to do it in a situation when they should think more about running and not smooching. But in this book they didn't act that stupid and I quite enjoyed McCauley and Alpert working together. This book was fabulous to read and since I have had for years a fascination with dinosaurs was I intrigued by the story from the beginning. But I never imaged that it would be so good, so different from other adventures thrillers I have read and I liked the fact that it wasn't a "religious" hunt, no holy grail or some lost book of Jesus to find. The discovery that Galileo Galilei made was interesting and it was the very discovery that made me in the end give it five stars. It was so fantastic, so mind boggling and it was that kind of discovery that stayed with me after I read the last page. I'm still a bit amazed by it and it has been days since I read the book.

I like to color with the tv on in the background, it helps me forget about the stresses of the day. This one has some beautiful designs. Ive added a few pics so you can see the kind of images there are. I havent had this book long, but I've started coloring one of the pictures as you can see! Some of the pictures are intricate, but not too intricate which would make them difficult to color. Also the pictures don't have large blank areas to color which I find frustrating in other coloring books. I like to use lots of different colors! Also, another feature I like is that the back of every picture is left blank, which is sensible because otherwise the color can show up on the back of the page.

It’s November in Chicago. Fresh from their encounter with the Gingerbread Man, four drug-related murders, seemingly unrelated to each other, bring Lieutenant Jaqueline “Jack” Daniels and her partner, Herb Benedict, out into the snowy night. They appear to be run-of-the-mill drug deals gone bad…until witnesses at one of the crime scenes report that they saw the shooting. And they have overheard the name of the killer: Esteban Fernandez. Jack and the Chicago PD notify the Federal authorities, thanks to a new Federal APB on Fernandez. Fernandez has been declared a threat to National Security, and all movements are to be reported. Justice Security has been given a government contract: find Esteban Fernandez and stop him. Bring him in for trial if possible, but stop him. When word reaches them that Fernandez is in Chicago, Joey Justice, his partners, and their FBI liaison, Marcus Moore, move quickly to the Windy City, and they take over the investigation. They also take over Jack Daniels and Herb Benedict, and draft them into the biggest crime case in Chicago’s history…a crime case that Jack will never be allowed to talk about. Action, humor, and even a two-night-stand for Jack…find out what happens when Jack Daniels and Justice Security take on insane Mexican drug cartel leader, Esteban Fernandez, in the novel inspired by the classic song by Paper Lace, “The Night Chicago Died”! Chicago will never be the same…

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. as always. a great mixture of of action (the enemy of my enemy is my friend), detective work, and a little romance. By Cindi I've read the whole series of Joey Justice and team, so when Bilderback had his character mention past crimes at only 4% of the book, I was naming past books as he mentioned a scene from the other books, and was already exited to continue reading. And the mixing of his characters with characters of Konwrath's book,Whiskey Sour (one of his many that was personally suggested by Bilderback to read so that I could be totally in the loop with all characters in his book. The book as a whole far outweighed the small typos, and telling the story in the first person , but at other times, he switched from first to third person when speaking of person telling the story. But again, that was done only a few times. The author asked for thoughts, good or bad, and this is the first constructive criticism I've ever had. This will be a long way from me not to continue purchasing his books. I know you have more coming, the first I believe is the first of the May. I'll be there too, my friend.

Solid introduction of author's characters into Jack Daniels Kindle World By Felipe Adan Lerma The author has carefully grafted his densely populated world of characters from Justice Security into Jack Daniels' Chicago. Including and keeping the lovable Herb and Harry. Well, if not totally lovable, then enjoyable and easily recognizable (smiles). The story line is mostly crisp and to the point, mixing humor with a deep level criminal persona.I like the minimal approach to most of the action, but do feel a bit of lingering, plus the addition of some metaphors and similes, would add moments of depth and involvement with both the story and characters. There was an early unusually long exposition chapter introducing all the Justice Security characters in one reading, which read surprisingly interestingly, but maybe could have done in smaller chunks.Interesting also, and balancing the near 100% bad guy personality, was a defector within the Justice group, and, a near match of the bad guy with the main good guy in Justice with the latter's easy willingness to push the use of terrorist law to achieve his own ends. I think Joey's character could really be developed into some sort of moral quandary in future stories. Also, varying the term for the drug lord's thugs from "Mexican Army" to include "cartel", "hired hands", and even "mercenaries" would help create an intrigue as to how this king pin got fully armed troops across the border without repercussions from the people in Mexico who benefit from U.S. relations.Again though, does leave the door open for an even more involved, more intriguing, more dangerously suspenseful story in the future.Really nice intro story with lots of possibilities.Especially with Herb and Harry in Jack Daniels' tow.

By Carolyn Linington I'm a fan of Bob Moats and his 3 P.I. Series and I was thrilled when Bob decided to introduce Jim, Art and Gus to each other at a Convention here in Detroit.Jim comes to town with the gang in tow to give them a working vacation, while Art and Gus are already here doing their thing. As always, trouble seems to follow and find Jim, Art and Gus, but the boys put their collective knowledge together to go after the bad guys and after more then a few twists and turns they get them, with the help of a completely new character, Stoney Hawk. All's well that ends well and the three Gents and their entourages go their separate ways, happy to have met and made new friends; and we're left with Stoney and wanting more from this one of a kind P.I.You won't be disappointed by this new book and it will leave you wondering what the newest of Bob's Creations will have in store for us. I give it 5 stars and can't wait till the next one comes out.

Each of the characters Jim Richards , Arthur Doyle and Gus Mackie bring a different manner to solving crime but each working together makes for an interesting twist in the Big City of Detroit. A convention of Investigators with foul play a foot always exciting and Bob's Style of Investigative writing is always an enjoyment. It was great that Penny was Safe this time out especially for Jim. The interaction between the different developed characters adds to the spice in this piece. A great Read as usual Bob your fans will all agree the combination of characters makes for an very interesting novel.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. At last, the Beatrix Rose story that fills in the blanks!! By Janice Mann First, I will be honest in saying that I am a member of the advance team for Mark Dawson's books, and, because of this, I get free copies in exchange for suggestions regarding editing and then for an honest review. However, no matter which books I get for free, I have always bought the books when they were released, and I just bought this whole set. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, I love to re-read them, and it is better reading them from the main section of my Kindle than from the download section of the Kindle. Secondly, and this is the most important reason, I get hours and hours of wonderful entertainment from this author, and I feel it is only right that he get paid for all his hard work. So, I read the three books separately, but, this weekend, I plan to curl up and read them again, back to back.I was first introduced to Beatrix Rose through the John Milton series, and I fell in love with this lady, from her training of John Milton and through her running away to Hong Kong in pain due to betrayal, having to leave her daughter behind. Then I read the books from the time she was able to bring her daughter to Hong Kong and train her, while hunting down her betrayers. But there was a very large gap between those two times, and I often asked myself what the hell happened to her in Hong Kong that led to some of the choices she made. Well, this set of books filled that gap, and filled it with excitement and non-stop action - all the trademarks of Mark Dawson's writing!! Even now, though, I would dearly love to read more about this super lady!My advice to all readers, no matter who you are: Buy anything and everything Mark Dawson has ever written, and put an alert on Amazon for anything and everything he writes in the future. You won't be sorry you did.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beatrix Rose in Hong Kong fills in the blanks with all that you can expect and more! By WATKINS12 I, too, signed up to be a reviewer. As such, I have to read carefully and look for discrepancies and report them for the final product. I am proud to do this for Mark Dawson as he writes fantastic books.Beatrix Rose appears in Mr. Dawson's John Milton series in Ghosts. There she is #1 in Group 15 and Milton is #12. As assassins in the employ of the UK's government, they are on a mission from the beginning of the book, but something goes wrong. Beatrix gains access to documents which she gives to Control, the head of Group 15. The documents turn out to implicate him for treason so he sends other members of the Group to take care of her. They kill her husband and abduct her daughter. Years later Beatrix appears in Russia in time to help Milton rescue Pope, another member of the Group. This collection of stories covers Beatrix' time in Hong Kong and what a time it was! She first saves a Cleaner from being mutilated by the Yakuza and proceeds to help him in his business by providing him with the bodies of those his boss wants gone. We find her diagnosed with cancer and still wanting to see her daughter. As the books progress, she takes aim at some of the higher ups of the Yakuza. This box set fits between Ghosts and In Cold Blood and makes more sense read in order. I just finished the other three books and I admit I was confused a bit before I stopped to read these three stories first. The author had skipped part of the timeline to write the other three. I am very thankful that he filled it in.If you like action and adventure, this box set and the other books will give it to you in spades! (Pun intended when you can find the bodies.)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a solid piece of the entire John Milton Beatrix Rose thriller series by Mark Dawson By Amazon Customer Disclosure: I participate on the Mark Dawson review team. Having reviewed all the novellas I would recommend they be read 'back to back as an entire book. The plot line fills in back ground on Beatrix Rose activities while in Hong Kong with the accompanying adventure of her vicarious life style. Good action and interesting twists in the three novellas keep you deeply involved in the story. If you want to forget the stress of the real world you live in for an escape this is a really good way to do it.

A little bit chilling in that the story has a ring of possibility to it." - Reader Review At a US research facility funded by the military and clandestine agencies a super-virus has been created as a first strike military weapon. During its conception the anti-virus has furthered the possibilities of medical research by decades. Such is its potential, treachery has struck from within. If the virus is released, then the anti-virus will be worth billions to the pharmaceutical industry. Isobel Bartlett worked on the project and knows its potential. After the suspicious death of her mentor, and upon hearing part of an audacious plan to make money from the project she flees the facility with the information needed to culture the viruses to seek help from a contact with the FBI. Up against rogue government forces, she is helped by Agent Rob Stone of the Secret Service who has been tasked by the president to investigate a disbanded assassination program after his investigation led him to the bio research facility. The two are hunted mercilessly by an assassin from Washington to the streets of New York. Only when the hunt reaches the wild forests of Vermont can ex-special forces soldier Stone take the fight to the enemy.

Its Amazing By Vicky One of the great joys of being an avid reader is discovering an author who continually manages to not only bring their “A” game with each new offering, but also refuses to fall into the convention of routine, delivering original stories at every possible turn. What thrills and amazes me about the work of author A P Bateman is that he switches things up on a regular basis but never falters as a storyteller.

On a rainy winter night in Mexico City, a ten-member wedding party is kidnapped in front of the groom’s family mansion. The perpetrator is a small-time gangster named El Galán, who wants nothing more than to make his crew part of a major cartel and hopes that this crime will be his big break. He sets the wedding party’s ransom at five million US dollars, to be paid in cash within 24 hours. The only captive not related to either the bride or the groom is the young Jessica Juliet Wolfe, a bridesmaid and close friend of the bride. Jessie hails from a family of notorious outlaws that has branches on both sides of the border, and when the Wolfes learn of Jessie’s abduction, they fear that the kidnappers will kill the captives after receiving the ransom—unless they rescue Jessie first.Gritty and exhilarating, The House of Wolfe takes readers on a wild ride from Mexico City’s opulent neighborhoods to its frenetic downtown streets and feral shantytowns, as El Galán proves how dangerous it is to underestimate an ambitious criminal, and Jessie's blood kin desperately try to find her before it’s too late.

The House of Wolfe: A Border Noir, by James Carlos Blake

Review “James Carlos Blake has long been one of my favorites, but his Wolfe family saga may be his best work to date. His latest, a complex kidnapping tale, brings to mind Faulkner’s storytelling in As I Lay Dying with the grittiness and realism of Cormac McCarthy’s border tales. Brilliant and uncompromising, Blake again proves why he’s one of the best writers working today.”—Ace Atkins, New York Times bestselling author of The Forsaken and the forthcoming The Redeemers“A writer with as many fine and wonderful skills as those possessed by James Carlos Blake should be well-known and embraced. He has for a long time now been delivering novels set in the recent and less recent American past, thrilling stories of great power and insight, and with The House of Wolfe he brings all those same qualities to a novel of the harrowing present down along the border.”—Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter’s Bone“James Carlos Blake is a master of the nail-biting thriller and the literary novel. The promise of his early work comes to full maturity in The House of Wolfe, a story as contemporary as a CNN sound bite and as old as human conflict itself, with a climax that howls with the triumph of the primitive.”—Loren D. Estleman, author of You Know Who Killed Me“Masterly. . . . Blake convincingly portrays modern-day Mexico City as a beautiful and surreal landscape. . . . As always, the writing is both poetic and visceral, and the mostly present-tense narrative keeps the reader engaged as the action rushes toward a surprising and fully satisfying conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly (starred and boxed review)“Blake excels at ensemble pieces and plays to his strengths here. Like a director with a small army of camera teams at his disposal, he wheels from one location to another, racking the focus with such intensity that, at any moment, the story you’re in feels like the only story there is until he cuts away again. A hard-edged, fast-moving thriller that will hold your attention hostage—good luck getting away.”—Booklist (starred review)“Without a wasted word, Blake captures the action with a poet’s voice as he describes the beauty and waste of modern Mexico City. A perfect pick for those who prefer their thrillers without borders.”—Arizona Daily Star“Blake has an unerring sense of control, and—though Elmore Leonard and Cormac McCarthy are lurking in the book’s DNA—a distinctive voice . . . The House of Wolfe is a pungent and exhilarating read.”—Financial Times“Blake delivers a thriller that hits all the right spots and hits them hard.”—Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine“This is masterful writing from beginning to end, so good that it will set your teeth on edge in the best of ways . . . A dark and violent novel about the three things that matter most: love, family and loyalty.”—Bookreporter“The laws of nations are thinnest at the edges, and Blake’s story throws a spotlight on those outliers who have chosen their own codes over any others. This fast-paced, well-plotted thriller reads like a mix of Cormac McCarthy and Elmore Leonard.”—Library Journal“Blake . . . does a masterful job of creating place by providing telling details of sights and smells that put the reader right in the cantinas, cafes, and slums of South Texas and Mexico City . . . Make[s] the reader want to know more about these tough, likeable, risk-taking, live-by-their-own-code Wolfes. ”—Reviewing the Evidence"A fast-paced thriller that you just won’t want to put down . . . Raw, unbridled suspense . . . A must-read for anyone who likes reading edgy, suspenseful fiction.”—Killer Nashville

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it is a James C. Blake novel By Bordeaux Dogue Of course, and it therefore deserves to be read.It just might be, however that it is his least interesting work. Full of action, with the characters we know from generations ago and a bunch of mexican hoods, as has to bethis novel however lacks Blake's expected depthness and historical framework, something i jave como to expect, and relish, from his novels. It is a rather good action novel. Not a five star one, however, considering what we are used to, from the pen of James Carlos Blake.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is masterful writing from beginning to end, so good that it will set your teeth on edge in the best of ways. By Bookreporter In the interest of full disclosure, I am currently loving any literary work that meets the classification of “border noir” or “desert noir.” THE HOUSE OF WOLFE does that, but I would have eaten it up regardless. Author James Carlos Blake seems set on establishing a literary Wolfe family dynasty with his newly released work, the second (after 2013’s THE RULES OF WOLFE) or third (if you count the historical novel COUNTRY OF THE BAD WOLFES) in a series of novels concerning a large family with blood ties across the U.S.-Mexican border. While hiding in plain sight, the Wolfe family and their Mexican counterparts south of the border have established a number of extremely successful enterprises, legal and otherwise, through what one might call business diversification, establishing wealth and, perhaps more importantly, power along the way. What occurs in the Wolfe series has been described as semi-autobiographical, and certainly what has occurred in the series to date has the ring of reality and truth to it. It’s not just the story that Blake tells; it’s the unflinching beauty with which he tells it that makes this series an addiction after only two (or three) books.Blake can make you flinch with the violence of his prose in one paragraph and arouse you with an erotic description in another. Anyone who has ever walked on the wild side, however briefly, will recognize each and all of the characters in THE HOUSE OF WOLFE, and be attracted by some and repelled by others. This is masterful writing from beginning to end, so good that it will set your teeth on edge in the best of ways. The plot is fairly straightforward, even as Wolfe’s masterful and plain-edged use of language, drama and suspense turns the book into a story that you hope will never end. Jessica “Jessie” Juliet Wolfe of the American side of the Wolfe family equation is in Mexico City, participating as a bridesmaid in the wedding of one of her best friends from college. The festivities, however, are irrevocably marred by a group of bandidos who kidnap the entire wedding party as they leave the reception. The abduction is carried out professionally enough under the leadership of El Galán, a lower tier gangster who wants to make the jump into the major leagues. El Galán’s plan is to hold the wedding party for a ransom of five million USD, figuring that the audaciousness of his act and the amount of money demanded will gain him a partnership with one of the major crime cartels. Jessica, the only member of the wedding party not related to the bride or groom by blood, is, as it turns out, a deadly outlier. When the Texas Wolfes are notified by their Mexican cousins of Jessica’s abduction, they are not content to sit back and let their relatives go it alone with the dangerous task of recovering her. Within hours, family members from both sides of the border are sitting in Mexico City, plotting how they are going to find Jessica and effect a rescue, not to mention a fitting revenge. The vignette that opens the book demonstrates unequivocally that the Wolfes are not a family to be trifled with. El Galán, for his part, is ruthless and motivated, and, as we see soon enough, Jessica incurs the wrath of his henchmen all too quickly. It’s not so much a question of whether or not the Wolfes will get to El Galán and his crew, as to whether or not they will get to them in time --- “in time,” as in before anyone is hurt, killed, or worse. That is the question that will keep your eyes and mind galloping across the pages.Blake has been critically acclaimed for several years; the reason for that will be clear once you read THE HOUSE OF WOLFE. He enjoys dropping little mysteries into the narrative and revealing the answer a bit later. For example, the abduction of the wedding party is a very well-kept secret. How is it, then, that the Wolfes know about it within a few hours of its occurrence? Blake provides a very surprising, and surprisingly erotic, answer early on, which is worth the price of admission all by itself. There is also a bit of a pause in the present-day narrative about halfway through, as some tidbits of backstory are told, some of which will no doubt be enlarged upon for future volumes. There are many more reasons to come to THE HOUSE OF WOLFE, a dark and violent novel about the three things that matter most: love, family and loyalty.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

This book, though good by most author's standards, is not up to Blake' s high standards. It is a routine "recover the kidnapped girl" type thriller and, though well written and mildly suspenseful , has nothing to really distinguish it. I wish Blake would write more historical thrillers set in the west or turn of the nineteenth century like Handsome Harry.

Clara Fitzgerald was hoping for a quiet Christmas, but when the elderly Miss Sampford sends out a plea for help Brighton's first female private detective can hardly refuse. Miss Sampford believes someone is trying to scare her out of her house. A 'ghost' has her servants handing in their notice and the neighbours talking. Miss Sampford doesn't believe in ghosts anymore than Clara does, but something sinister is occurring in her home in Berkeley Square, London. Clara sets off to investigate, but soon finds she has been beaten to it by Mr Andrews, a self-professed ghost hunter who has been employed by Miss Sampford's nephew, Elijah. To top it all off, Miss Sampford's family descend on her for Christmas, including William Henry Sampford who has every reason to wish his aunt dead. Is the ghost a means for murder? Clara is soon convinced that Miss Sampford's life is very much in danger and when one of the Christmas guests dies under mysterious circumstances she is even more certain the Berkeley Square ghost has murderous intentions. But can she unmask the killer before real harm comes to Miss Sampford? And what secrets are there in the old woman's past that make her a target for a killer? Clara is faced with unraveling the past to save her client, while stopping the ghost from killing again. For more books by Red Raven Publications go to www.facebook.com/RedRavenPublications

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another winner in the series.... By Trinity Cause So far I've read all the books in this series and will keep reading them. I love the characters and the plots are generally very good. This one did throw a ringer in at the very end but kept me guessing throughout just who the murderer might be. The characters though are what makes this series for me. I would like to see more of Tommy, Clara's brother, and find out what is happening with the progress of his paralysis. Maybe the next book will have more. The settings of these books are post WWI England, and Clara is the first female private detective. She lives with her brother and her maid/friend Annie and provides the income for the household through her detecting jobs. The author is well written and paints a detailed picture of settings, characters, and lifestyles. This book however had more typos and grammatical errors than I remember existing in the previous books but I've learned to expect that with Kindle editions and if it is a favorite author, like this author, I tend to ignore them. I recommend this series if you're looking for an easy read, gentle pace, non-graphic sexual reference, and something a bit more serious than a cozy but not as serious as say, Jonathan Kellerman. Start with book 1, Memories of the Dead.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well Written Mystery By Reader2 This is the fifth book in the Clara Fitzgerald series, but it's the first one that I've read. The story is complete, in and of itself, and works well as a stand alone. The setting is in England some time after World War 1. Clara holds the unusual position of being Brighton's first female private detective. In this story, she starts out trying to solve the mystery of a malevolent ghost and ends up solving two murders as well. She works with the aid of her paralyzed brother, Tommy, her maid and friend, Annie, and her photographer friend, Oliver Bankes. The story moves along at a nice steady pace without foul language or explicit sexual content. (There is reference to one of the characters being homosexual but no graphic details.) The characters are well developed and I wasn't able to solve the mystery ahead of time. I very much enjoyed the book and would like to read the other books in this series.

The characters were well established and I felt like I was taken back to London in the 1920s. It was a haunting mystery that I could not solve which even added to my enjoyment.
