EVIL RUNS

An Action-Packed Supernatural Mystery / Thriller

Does living evil walk among us? Demons don't exist - at least not according to Cole Garza, sheriff of a small Gulf Coast town. He doesn't believe in much of anything since the day his wife was killed. When the French priest Francois Domaine walks into his life claiming that a recent mass murder was the work of a dark force, Garza doesn't know what to think, let alone believe. He only knows that the mysterious stranger seen around town at the time of the slaughter bears an uncanny resemblance to the priest's claim that living evil moves in our midst. The two men form an uneasy alliance, both determined to find the murderer. Drawn into the web of mystery is Nadine May, an information genius under contract with clandestine services. Socially awkward but interested in a relationship with the sheriff and fascinated by the shadowy power behind the murders, she agrees to add her unique skills to the pursuit - despite her spiritual skepticism and complete lack of belief in the supernatural. The trio find themselves on a quest for the truth about good and evil, travelling first to Wales and the scene of another mass-murder, then on to the killing fields of Syria where the stakes rise even higher. Now it's not just innocents in danger; they're forced to fight for their own lives. What they always thought was true might not be. Cole and Nadine must decide whether Francois is right about the nature of the living horror they pursue. If he is, how do you battle this most evil of creatures? They need to find the right answers, because their own lives, and the potential fate of millions hangs on it.

Review "It grabbed me from the very first page. It's one of those books that you don't want to put down but you make yourself do it just because you hate to see it end." - Kindle Reviewer"Superbly written, no drags, no slow starts, just hop on board and ride the express to the end." - Kindle Reviewer"I loved this book! It's been awhile since I've read a book that hooked me on the first page and sustained my interest right to 'The End'! I'm a visual person and this author was able to paint a picture with his words on every page. Awesome!" - Kindle Reviewer"This book was awesome! Scary! Exciting! Didn't want to put it down! But sad it's finished. So realistic with what's going on in the world today." - Kindle Reviewer"Vince writes incredibly well for a first novel, and while this reviewer is not usually drawn to the supernatural, this story is so well crafted that once begun it must be devoured as quickly as possible. Be aware there is a new thriller writer with a brisk imagination who is beginning to enter the terrain of exploring evil."  - Amazon Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewer

From the Author Q & A with Vince MilamQ: A small town Texas sheriff, a beautiful and eccentric information technology guru, and a French priest? Really?V: Sure, why not? The three main protagonists are Cole Garza, Nadine May, and Francois Domaine--three very disparate personalities. They have grown to love and support each other despite their wildly varying worldviews. Cole is the sheriff of Aransas County, Texas--a Gulf Coast county with as many boats as pickup trucks.  He has more than a dollop of Comanche blood in his lineage, and while he presents a very laid-back approach to life, when faced with adversity he becomes--to quote a local citizen in his town--"all fight". Nadine May is an information technology genius, contracting to the NSA, FBI, CIA, and Homeland Security. She can break through any electronic firewall or security system and may well be the world's best human bloodhound when it comes to finding answers.  Her thinking process pinballs from one subject to the next, rarely with a logical sequence--a trait that drives most folks crazy. Nadine has a heart of gold, an OCD habit of doing things in threes, and lives with her pet, Mule the Cat. Nadine has learned and often utilizes Francois's Gallic shrug and pursing of lips--an attribute Cole finds less than endearing. Francois Domaine is a French priest, residing at the Vatican. He has the ability to hone in on manifested evil. He is also a bon vivant--clothes, food, and wine are critically important to him. A lavender pocket handkerchief will, absolutely, be paired with lavender socks and custom Italian shoes. That said, he often dresses down to "blend in", when he's apt to wear jeans, orange Chuck Taylor sneakers, a T-shirt, and an orange bandana around his neck to match the sneakers. He fully expects Pouilly-Fuissé wine with his BBQ chicken, chain smokes French cigarettes, and often wafts a hand in a dismissive gesture if the subject at hand doesn't meet his approval.  He is absolutely fearless. Francois confronts evil head-on, a short, rotund bowling ball of a man rolling towards danger. This is an attribute admired greatly by Cole and Nadine, although Cole has greater faith in his .45 pistol than the Almighty.Q: Any romance in the novel?V: Cole and Nadine have a thing for each other. Cole's laconic nature is a sea anchor for Nadine in her turbulent world. That same reserve and reticence, on occasion, drives her crazy. Nadine's remarkable mind and ricochet conversational gambits entertain Cole. Those very traits also, on occasion, drive him up a wall. Cole and Nadine have not yet had a physical relationship, although Cole's neighbor, the eighty year old Mrs. P., has admonished Cole to get a gym membership before such endeavors. "A hot-wired rawboned gal like that is liable to hurt you, son." Q: What about spirituality in the novel?V:  Cole has a mainstream and somewhat distant perspective on spirituality--driven in no small part by the senseless murder of his wife several years earlier.  Nadine has her own unique views on the subject, and struggles with connectivity between empirical data and a higher power.  Francois is, well, a priest--albeit one with more than a touch of hubris.  Three different paths towards one goal--stopping horrific evil.

About the Author A good tale told.  That's what you'll find with the Challenged World Series.  Come celebrate three very dissimilar characters that band together to confront dark forces while learning to love, grow, and get along--without driving each other crazy. A Gulf Coast sheriff dragged reluctantly into events well beyond his comfort zone.  A beautiful and eccentric technology genius striving to piece together her spiritual world as well as international clues to terrorism. And finally, a French priest with a deep commitment to combat foul forces while ensuring his food, drink, and attire measure up to his high standards. The U.S., Wales, Syria, West Africa, and Mexico - they travel the world, pulled by events and catastrophes that are driven by forces well beyond their comprehension. Jump onboard for a fun ride as they figure out what to believe and how to work together - while surviving in the most hellish of circumstances.

He is pretty much exactly what you would picture in a texas sheriff, minus the cowboy attire. He lost his wife to a gunman a few years previously, that sat heavy on his heart. Cole took acts of violence very seriously, as anyone would. When he received a 911 call to a nursing home he didn’t know what to expect. It was a massacre, a mad man was loose inside the building. By the time He arrived, it was too late. Cole was on the search for the mysterious old man he saw fleeing the scene. Cole soon discovers that things aren’t always what they seem when a Vatican Priest comes to help him with the investigation. Cole along with the Priest and Nadine, A CIA/homeland security contractor, are off to solve this case.I wanted to read Evil Runs because I haven’t read a supernatural thriller in a while, and the mystery aspects interested me. I was immediately snatched up by this book. I really appreciated how fast paced it was, definitely lives up to the ‘Thriller’ genre. Evil Runs impressed me in more ways than one. I found Vince Milam’s writing style very smooth and easy to follow. I was actually shocked when I found out Evil Runs was His debut work! I can honestly say it is one of the better debut novels I have read. If you’re looking for a fun read, you should grab a copy of Evil Runs by Vince Milam. I am happy I got the opportunity to review this book, and I am really looking forward to his second novel. 5/5

As many other reviewers have already stated it is hard to believe this a debut novel. The characters are so well developed and become very real, the plot advances from Texas to Wales to the Middle East.(Just as evil itself isn't limited to one geographical place.) The writing is well crafted. In addition to the supernatural mystery of the novel there is plenty of action and adventure, particularly when the chase heads to the Middle East. Actually setting part of the action in the Middle East gave me a better understanding of the various factions all fighting each other. The use of technology as one of the helpful tools worked in well while remaining the tool and not the focus.Everything above would have made me give this a five star rating but the delicious part for me was the age-old battle of good vs. evil. This is not the kind of demon with whom Buffy the Vampire Slayer could fall in love. Each character brings a gift or talent to the table and the three function so well as a team, with a love and respect for each other that develops a bond I can see growing stronger in succeeding books in the series. Although there are spiritual aspects to this book, I would not call it "religious". These are three simple people who come to recognize the power of evil when they see it, find the faith to believe in a greater power, and act on it. This will be a great book for a reading group to pull apart, examining all of its many aspects and different levels of interpretation. BUT if all you want is an exciting good read, you won't miss with this one. If I could, I would give this a higher rating than five star. Kudos to Vince Milam for a book well written!

Wow, it really keeps moving faster with each chapter and you don't want to put it down until you finish! Great book - I can't wait until the next one!

Private Investigator Booker T. Adams knows that dipping a toe in the filthy moat of organized crime is the equivalent to sticking a finger in an electric socket—if it doesn't kill you, it will certainly alter your way of life. Which is why his reluctant history of swapping favors with a Chicago crime boss must remain dormant. Until Booker receives a call that changes everything. The seven-year-old daughter of "The Shark" has been kidnapped. On a flight from Dallas to Chicago before he's told the full story, Booker quickly runs into former Chicago cop Jack Daniels and her obnoxious PI partner, Harry McGlade. With just hours to find the little girl before she's killed, the unlikely threesome—Harry's favorite term—race against time to hunt those who dared to kidnap a mobster's little girl. United by the love of their own little girls, Jack and Booker deal with gang-bangers, pimps and desperate schmucks—while dodging Harry's crass comments—to solve a case that means far more to both of them then they'd like to admit. Boilermaker traverses the world of John W. Mefford's South Dallas, take-no-prisoners PI (BOOKER - Streets of Mayhem, BOOKER - Tap That) with J.A. Konrath's former top Chicago detective (Whiskey Sour, Shaken, Stirred) for an uproarious, fast-paced thriller.

I hate these 2$ Novellas...written by author-wannabes. The Real Harry McGlade and Jack Daniels stories written by Konrath are wonderful, fun, interesting and I've purchased every one of them. These Novellas are pathetic and embarrassing. Sorry but it is true.

Harold Bartz, aka Bandit, has a low IQ which contrasts sharply with his delusions of grandeur. He flees Minneapolis after witnessing a murder. Once in Las Vegas, rather than hiding, he starts cooking up schemes. His pals, Banger and Diggs, soon join him. Bandit has company in Vegas: Yuri Vostov and Nikki Kerlenko, two Russian hit men sent by the sadistic Jethro Plack. A shady telemarketer, Plack separates guileless customers from their money. His company is in Minnesota, but he oversees Internet swindles from a hidden office in London. Plack's scam, Fortune Fate Lottery, gains the attention of Sean O'Dell, a St. Paul police lieutenant. O'Dell is investigating the explosion of Internet crime and its elderly victims. "C. J." Johannson, a Minneapolis cop, is assigned a suicide case. Lana Winton's death however, doesn't fit the profile of a suicide. C.J. begins gathering clues that lead him to Plack's office in St. Paul. Plack's elaborate scheme has evaded detection thus far. Working against him this time however, is his own man, hacker extraordinaire Tommy Ling, who becomes uncomfortable with the idea of destroying the lives of innocent victims. Ling hatches a plan to scam the scammers and become the Robin Hood Hacker. When Bandit finally comes forward, C. J. can go after Plack for murder and O'Dell can foil Plack's Internet scheme in London. With Plack behind bars, the Robin Hood Hacker makes headlines while Bandit and his pals stumble into a surprise in Vegas.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Smart Interesting Thriller By Protozoan I received this book from the author for an honest review. This was an awesome story! I'm not sure where to begin about what I liked best about the book itself so I'll just start with the writing. Mr. Siqveland is a very intelligent writer. I loved the wide variety of vocabulary in this entire story, he uses many terms that I don't see often in books. His writing style was very interesting when he introduces and describes characters and events. I felt like I was watching a movie that Guy Ritchie wrote and directed because Mr. Siqveland's writing in very similar to how Guy Ritchie tells his stories in his movies. For example, some of the chapters are really short, like two pages short, which is fine because it's just another part of the story that we as readers are catching up on or we are learning something new. There are many characters involved that are all involved in the plot. Each chapter is the point of view of first person from a different character. In the book, I would read about one character and then the next chapter would be from a character in a different environment who I haven't heard from since 5 chapters ago. This reminded me of Guy Ritchie's character jumping in his movies when he switches up his scenes. The banter, wit and charm of the dialogue was entertaining. The way Mr. Siqveland writes the funny banter between characters is very similar to how Guy Ritchie wrote Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels; it was sharp and poignant.Normally I don't like many references to other works of any kind in books but Mr. Siqveland did a nice job on intertwining references and philosophies in this book. It wasn't over done and it added to the thoughts and feelings to the story.Besides all of that, the plot was fantastic! There is quite a lot that happens with various characters. I won't give anything away. The description might look a little confusing with all the characters and descriptions but the book itself is wonderfully written and flows well so it's not so confusing. All the characters were very well developed. I felt like I knew all the characters well and I enjoyed them all. I liked that every character in this story had their own agenda going on while there were so many others involved. Every character was unique from one another and brought something different to the story.Overall, I would highly recommend this story to anyone that wants to read a very smart interesting thriller. Or if you're a fan of the movies Snatch or Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels; give this book a chance, I'm sure you'll like it!I would like to thank Mr. Siqveland for sharing his work with me, it was a pleasure.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A simple witness to a satisfyingly complex story By Wally Wood On page 2 of Bob Siqveland's Simple Witness, Jethro Plack—a very bad man—murders a young woman in a Minneapolis parking garage. It's Jethro's bad luck that one Harold Bartz, aka Bandit—not the sharpest tool in the shed—witnesses the killing. Jethro does catch Bandit's truck license number, however, and the game's afoot.Bandit, smart enough to realize he's in danger but, rather than going to the cops with what he's seen, lights out for Las Vegas. Vegas turns out to be a city of opportunity for Bandit and he induces two other dim Minneapolis friends to join him. But not before the friends inadvertently revealed Bandit's new address to Jethro who sends two Russian hit men clean up his mess. These sections are more like Laurel and Hardy go look for Larry, Moe, and Curly.Jethro's telemarketing business is a beard for his very lucrative internet scam which announces that You have WON the Fortune Fate Lottery with a £5,250,00 prize. "The notice was official-looking with lots of numbers, references, and instructions." The instructions were signed by Sir George Bedford in London. To claim the prize, the winner had to send £2,460 to "offset costs of processing your winnings, which include all account openings handling, insurance, transfer, and mailing charges."So while the Minneapolis cops are investigating the murder, a St. Paul cop begins looking into the internet scam. Simple Witness's short chapters move from Minneapolis to Las Vegas to St. Paul to London and back, and they shift in point of view from Jethro to Bandit to Sean O'Dell, a St. Paul police lieutenant, to Tommy Ling, one of Jethro's minions in London. Because the chapters are short and Siqveland's writing is clear, however, the reader is able to follow all the skulduggery.I thought Simple Witness was unusually entertaining. I also found Bandit and his two friends unconvincing, but I think it's difficult to write convincingly about characters with limited mental abilities. Finally, Jethro Plack is pure, unmitigated evil, and I think that's always a problem. Aside from ripping off gullible Americans who believe they've won a Fortune Fate Lottery, Plack enjoys causing women pain. He's a sicko and, as such, not that interesting as a character. He and the other bad people deserve what happens to them in the end.

Starts at a fair pace and then goes faster, faster and you end up racing to see what the ending is. We have characters that are really a little wacky and they completely draw you into their world. We have the evil villain Jethro Plack and the angel like, but stupid Bandit. Here you have what it takes for a complete success. The author takes short chapters, short as one and a half to two pages, and puts so much detail into that short of space. You keep turning those pages with excitement as to what is next. This book will give you a wild, crazy ride, a good read and a whole lot of fun. With living in the world we do, with all the uncertainty, the villain gets what he deserves, the good guy gets the girl and those with no clues get a chance. You will have to read the book yourself to find out what really happens. You won't be disappointed. SIMPLE WITNESS has everything you could want, it's a page turner, twists and turns, going from old London all the way to LA. What more could you want?I was given a complimentary copy of SIMPLE WITNESS from the author, Bob Siqveland and Out Skirts Press for my view of the book.

The Whole Truth, by David Baldacci

From Publishers Weekly Usually a sophisticated plotter, bestseller Baldacci (Absolute Power) offers a story line and villain on a par with an average James Bond film in what's billed as his first international thriller. Nicholas Creel, the head of the Ares Corporation, a huge defense contractor, hires a perception management firm to start a second cold war by planting fake news stories on the Internet about Russian atrocities. The propaganda campaign soon turns violent with the massacre of the members of a London think tank, the Phoenix Group, apparently by a Russian hit team. Creel hopes that the Phoenix Group's links with the Chinese government will lead to war between Russia and China as well as feed a worldwide arms race that will profit his company. A shadowy operative, A Shaw, whose fiancée perished in the London attack, allies himself with a disgraced female journalist in an effort to thwart Creel's evil plot. While some readers may find it a stretch that a resurgent Russia should so easily overshadow all other world crises, Baldacci in an author's note makes an eloquent case for the very real threat of perception management. (Apr. 22) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Baldacci masterfully plays on the American paranoia in the wake of the War on Terror in this bizarre international thriller. “Remember Constantin” is the battle cry du jour across America after a frightening piece of video makes the rounds on the Internet. In it, Constantin, a young Russian, claims that the release of the video means he has been executed by the Russian Federation. The fear of a return to the cold war is so palpable that nations across the globe are preparing for the worst. But is it a hoax? Nicolas Creel, the Machiavellian head of the largest defense contractor in the U.S., and his buddy Dick Pender, the image-maker (think evil, cartoonish versions of Cheney and Rove, respectively), are hell bent on keeping the terror levels high so that they become the ultimate go-to guys. But Shaw—that’s it, our hero’s name’s just Shaw—has other plans and risks his life and limb in order to keep the peace. Shaw answers to a secret global intelligence agency, and though he’s not too keen on their tactics, either, he’s determined to stay with the good guys, however negligible the distinction may be. Meanwhile journalist Katie James is after the “whole truth” behind this twisted version of king of the hill. Baldacci’s ability to make international intrigue light and readable is uncanny. It hovers on the verge of superhero nonsense, but the dialogue snaps forth on cue, the plot never slows, and the ending packs a genuine punch. Read-alikes? Tom Clancy, of course. --Mary Frances Wilkens

Review "When Baldacci is on fire, nobody can touch him."―Booklist (starred review)"High-stakes action, shadowy government agencies, and [a] neo-Cold War backdrop . . . Baldacci pushes his plot ahead at such a blistering pace."―Washington Post"Delicious . . . [a] roller-coaster adventure . . . an utterly enjoyable escapist page-turner."―Tampa Tribune

Robertson I was reluctant to purchase David Baldacci's The Whole Truth as some of his most recent books have been lacking in quality. Fortunately, this latest book reminds me of his earlier and better works.Nicholas Creel owns a defense contracting business called Ares. In an effort to bolster sales, he hires Dick Pender whose specialty is perception management. Perception managers fabricate facts and then pass them off to the public as truth. "Why waste time trying to discover the truth, when you can so easily create it?" Pender hatches a scheme to create an international incident that will result in a number of superpowers on the verge of war. These countries will then increase their defense spending and order weapons and equipment from Ares.Part of the scheme is called "The Red Menace." Pender and staff are planting false stories about the Russians in the news and over the internet. Several people suspect that these stories are false, including journalist Kate James, consultant Anna Fischer and operative A. Shaw. In usual thriller fashion, the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous their lives become. How The Whole Truth unfolds will have you turning pages at breakneck speed.Baldacci is good in that he incorporates many present day current events to make The Whole Truth very realistic. While almost all thrillers have an element of disbelief, you can actually imagine many of these situations taking place.I am happy that Baldacci took a break from his Camel Club series and has given us something totally new. The Whole Truth is the kind of book that I have come to expect from Baldacci. Overall, I'd rate it four and a half stars.

Bukowsky Dick Pender, a former employee in the White House press office, is an expert in perception management. His motto is: "Why waste time trying to discover the truth, when you can so easily create it?" In David Baldacci's "The Whole Truth," some very influential people pay Pender big bucks to bury inconvenient secrets and manipulate public opinion, using cleverly crafted lies packaged for maximum media impact. Pender's most important client is Machiavellian billionaire Nicholas Creel, the head of a defense conglomerate called the Ares Corporation. Creel, who believes that "a peace based on lurking terror was the best kind of all," hires Pender to manufacture an artificial conflict that would generate a stepped-up arms race among the world's superpowers.Baldacci's hero is Shaw, a globetrotting troubleshooter for a shadowy international law-enforcement organization, "sort of like Interpol on steroids." He is a strong and physically imposing man whose knowledge of surveillance, hand-to-hand combat, and weaponry makes him a highly valuable asset. His acting ability, uncanny intuition, courage, and coolness under pressure have helped him prevail in a number of dangerous situations. On any given day, Shaw's quarry might include ruthless drug dealers, bloodthirsty terrorists, or vicious neo-Nazis. Although Shaw dreams of retiring and living a sedate life with his beautiful and brilliant girlfriend, German-born Anna Fischer, his boss has him in a stranglehold from which he cannot easily break free.Complicating matters is Katie James, an award-winning investigative journalist. As a result of a traumatic experience in Afghanistan, she became an alcoholic who has been relegated to writing obituaries. Through happenstance, Katie meets Shaw and both narrowly escape after a run-in with a group of murderous thugs in Scotland. When an unexpected tragedy sends an enraged Shaw on a mission of revenge, Katie decides to risk her life in order to help him and, in the process, pursue the biggest story of her career.Although it is action-packed and suspenseful, "The Whole Truth" is marred by cliché-ridden dialogue and cartoonish villains who utter such lines as: "I didn't bring you here for a lecture. I brought you here to die." The story is convoluted and extremely violent, and the author repeatedly hammers home his heavy-handed message that unscrupulous individuals and even governments intentionally mislead us by disseminating false information. At best, "The Whole Truth" provides escapist entertainment for readers who are willing to overlook the book's one-dimensional characters, far-fetched plot, and pedestrian writing.

27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Does anyone know THE WHOLE TRUTH? By Terry Mathews If you were a fan of Robert Ludlum, the late, great espionage writer, there's reason to cheer. Even though the Cold War days are over, there are still a bevy of bad guys out there - and this time they don't have turbans on their heads.David Baldacci's "The Whole Truth" will make you sit back and take a long look at who's really running the show and who's reporting the news these days.Gazllionaire Nicholas Creel (even his name sounds smarmy), the world's largest defense contractor, doesn't like the way things are going. Russia's been too quiet and China's not currently mad at anyone. He pays a "perception management" team to stir the pot, with violent and fatal results. In the middle of the action is Katie James, a journalist whose dependency on alcohol has landed her at the obit desk of her newspaper. After covering the funeral of a Scottish hero, James lands in the middle of what she thinks is an international drug smuggling ring. A chance encounter with Shaw (no first name) pulls James into the biggest story of her life, if she can live to tell the tale. While you'll need to suspend your attachment to reality and there are times the writing goes stale, with "The Whole Truth," Baldacci has established himself as a big man on campus when it comes to political terrorism.

That fact makes it even more amazing to me how she can still write such top quality books. In fact, I thought this one was somewhere in the top 5 or so books she has written - almost as good as some of her great initial works like Where are the Children and A Stranger is Watching. The way she interweaves two very interesting mysteries, and the tension she creates as to both, was absolutely riveting. I hope Ms. Clark is able to continue writing well into her 90's as has PD James, because her work is still at such a high level. A must read for any Clark fan (and a good introduction to a great writer for someone who may not have read any of her books).

75 of 83 people found the following review helpful. Long-lived author returns to the old paths of success By Helpful Advice ‘I've Got You Under My Skin’ written by Mary Higgins Clark is a new novel from a queen of suspense novels, which for four decades entertains readers with her books full of twists and turns. Although her few last novels were of slightly lower quality compared to her best novels of the nineties such as ‘All around the Town’ and ‘I'll Be Seeing You’ with this one Higgins Clark seems to hit again at the center. The story starts with three-year-old Timmy Moran being the only witness of his father murder that will like a nightmare haunt this boy for many years since unfortunate event happened. On the other hand Tommy’s mother Laurie all those years is haunted by the words that the killer sent with a little boy that two of them are next. ..Laurie, who in present time works as a producer of TV crime show, as subject of her series deals with the murder known throughout the country of Betsy Powell that remained unresolved for 20 years. Betsy was killed in her bedroom after coming home from the party where she celebrated entry into the adult world of her daughter after she graduated.Once Laurie for the purpose of her series will reopen the story that has long stood intact, with the help of the people with whom Betsy spent the evening some long-hidden secrets will start to uncover. In addition, Laurie will gradually see the mystery about tragedy that marked her life begins to unravel as well…To talk about the style of the world-famous author who has wrote fifty novels and behind her in her long career has numerous television and movie adaptations is unnecessary because it is fully known. However, what Higgins Clark managed to do with this novel that will bring her back into sharp focus is that she delivered a good story and well-made and believable characters for whose fate reader will tremble to the end of the novel.I cannot boast that I have read all the novels of this fruitful novel author, who publishes in the annual rhythm, but comparing to those I have read (especially her older titles), ‘I've Got You Under My Skin’ is emerging as one of the best choices. Therefore, recommendations should go to all lovers of suspense genre and especially to the author fans while we can hope that with this novel long-lived author returns to the old paths to success.

I was sooooo disappointed with this book after waiting for it to be released. The plot is so typical and characters not developed enough and the reason "blue eyes" started the whole thing is absurd.I really don't think this book was written by Clark. Such a shame.

I bought it after looking at the Secret New York book and breaking out in a cold sweat at the detail. This one is perfect! (By the way, if you want to see all of them before buying, go to the artist's website.) The templates are one sided, which is really a must for most. I would always prefer the inside edges to be perforated and for the pictures not to go to the spine, but I can live with it here.Artistically, I think many of the templates could be in a lighter hand. The lines are rather distracting, especially for using pencil. Overall, it's a great book! I highly recommend it, and the price is very competitive for the quality and artistry. I will put the artist on my short list of books to keep an eye out for.

Along with Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and requisite Big Apple, there are taxi cabs, tourist attire, and street food. While to my taste, the coloring book has done a good job of capturing what I classify as New York City, this can be subjective. Those who live or who have lived in the City may see it in an entirely different vein. I think coloring books of this particular city have a tougher time than those, perhaps, of London or Paris.I will provide a more in-depth review of what I found in the coloring book below, but here is a quick overview:30 Designs most of which feature New York City viewsDesigns printed on one side of pagePaper is thin, white, and non-perforatedLine quality of print is variedMarkers, gel pens, and India ink pens all bleed through the paperColoring pencils work well but hard leads leave dents on back of pageI really enjoy coloring hand-drawn designs. I understand that because they are done by hand, the quality of the line art can vary. In this case, there were a few incomplete lines – whether due to printing or to the artist not finishing the image, I don't know. This happens from time to time in the best of books. I rectify it when I can by using a good black ink pen to complete the image. I have several in different point sizes so I can choose the one that best matches the design I am correcting. Not an issue that would make me return a book but one that I noticed on more than one or two designs. That being said, I really enjoyed my first project in this book. The torch of Lady Liberty was interesting to color. I used alcohol-based markers with an overlay of Tombow water-based markers to get the effect that I wanted. The designs are printed on one side of thin, white, non-perforated paper. Most of the designs merge into the binding. As the binding is glued rather than sewn, you will have to cut out pages to remove them from the book. In doing so, you will lose portions of the design. I was able to get by book to open flat by over-extending the book backwards when opening it. This breaks the spine.I will list the coloring medium I used to test this book in the comments section below. This is what I found:All markers, gel pens and India ink pens bleed through the paper. Coloring pencils work well and I was able to blend the soft lead pencils. Hard lead pencils leave indents on the page. Because of my tests, I suggest using a heavyweight card stock under the page you are working on to keep your work on the current project from marring the rest of the book.I was provided a free sample of this coloring book for test and review purposes.

Cheryl Bachelder joined an ailing restaurant chain and turned it into the darling of the industry - by daring to serve the people in her organization well. When Bachelder was named CEO of Popeyes in the fall of 2007, guest visits had been declining for years, restaurant sales and profit trends were negative, and the company stock price had dropped from $34 in 2002 to $13. The brand was stagnant, and relations between the company and its franchise owners were strained. By 2014, average restaurant sales were up 25 percent, and profits were up 40 percent. Popeyes' market share had grown from 14 percent to 21 percent, and the stock price was over $40. The franchisees were so pleased with the turnaround that they began reinvesting in the brand, rapidly remodeling restaurants, and building new units around the world. The difference maker, Bachelder says, was a conscious decision to lead in a new way. She and her team created a workplace where people were treated with respect and dignity yet challenged to perform at the highest level. Silos and self were set aside in favor of collaboration and team play. And the results were measured with rigor and discipline. Servant leadership is sometimes derided as soft or ineffective, but this book shows that it's actually challenging and tough minded - a daring path. Bachelder takes you firsthand through the transformation of Popeyes and shows how a leader at any level can become a Dare - to - Serve leader.

Dare to Serve: How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others, by Cheryl Bachelder

Review “With high-level experience at companies such as KFC and Domino's Pizza, coupled with stellar stock prices and profit margins at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Bachelder has the credentials for writing about leadership. Characterized in a Restaurant News article as a “modest buttoned up data wonk” who turned out to be a transformative leader, the author speaks at length in the first half of the book about the four pillars guiding Popeyes's turnaround and long-term strategy. Much of her subsequent advice about empowering employees, building consensus, setting ambitious goals, and tying daily work to a higher purpose echoes that of other recent management books. What sets hers apart is an emphasis on “servant leadership,” meaning focusing on others instead of self and achieving solid results by being humble, accountable, and modeling personal values at work. Specific tools for assessing accountability, articulating one's “personal purpose,” and identifying individual talents in self and subordinates are listed. VERDICT While the chatty storytelling style can be off-putting, quotes from thinkers as various as Nelson Mandela and Helen Keller are interspersed throughout with some 40 reflections meant to move the reader from understanding this management philosophy to implementing it. Recommended for those wishing to explore servant leadership in corporate America.”—Elizabeth Wood, Bowling Green State“Extraordinary! Dare to Serve describes the kind of leadership so desperately needed in the 21st century. A powerful blend of courage and humility, Cheryl Bachelder's engaging story offers a clear path for leaders to follow, and what makes her message so compelling is the tremendous results she's produced. I highly recommend this book.”—Stephen M. R. Covey, #1 bestselling author of The Speed of Trust and coauthor of Smart Trust “Dare to Serve is a crisp narrative of Cheryl's profound leadership journey as a corporate executive. Through balancing people, purpose, and principles, Cheryl produces outstanding results. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how it's done!”—Denise Ramos, CEO and President, ITT Corporation “When I speak with leaders, it is hard for them to grasp that servant leadership drives both great performance and great human satisfaction. Cheryl Bachelder provides an inspiring manual on how to be a Dare-to-Serve leader who drives superior results.”—Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Leading at a Higher Level “It has been a long time since I have read a book from beginning to end in one sitting, but that is exactly what I did with Dare to Serve, and I had to force myself not to read it again right then and there! It is truly a masterpiece and I will be sharing it with many friends, including those whom I am mentoring, just as soon as it is on the bookstands.”—Colleen Barrett, President Emeritus, Southwest Airlines, and coauthor of Lead with LUV“Anyone who leads anything will learn from the crisp and engaging stories in Dare to Serve. It is one of the best leadership books I have read and is a must-read for any leader who cares.”—Joel Manby, CEO, Herschend Family Entertainment, and author of Love Works“Dare to Serve stands out as one of the most practical, useful books on leadership that I have ever read. Full of real-world examples and grounded in the dramatic turnaround of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants, Cheryl shares with us how to serve others with intention, competence, character, courage, and humility. Her practical experience, proven results, and contagious passion to serve others well is an inspiration to all of us who want to make a real difference in the world.”—Bonnie Wurzbacher, Chief Resource Development Officer, World Vision International, and former Senior Vice President, Global Customer Leadership, The Coca-Cola Company “Dare to Serve chronicles both the remarkable turnaround story of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., and Cheryl's inspiring personal journey of discovery, which galvanized her commitment to an unconventional approach to corporate leadership that has yielded remarkable results.”—Andy Stanley, founder, North Point Ministries, Inc.“Dare to Serve offers a candid, behind-the-scenes look at how a struggling restaurant chain was transformed into a soaring brand success through a simple but revolutionary model of leadership based on serving others. This book is a must-read for leaders of all kinds!”—Phil Cordell, Global Head, Focused Service and Hampton Brand Management, Hilton Worldwide“Compelling and inspiring! Bachelder makes the case for her people-focused approach to leadership through her real-life experience at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Developed and honed in an industry where service to others is at the very core of what we do, these lessons are sure to translate not only across industries but to our personal lives as well.”—Dawn Sweeney, President and CEO, National Restaurant Association “Cheryl Bachelder's brave and unconventional approach to the turnaround of Popeyes challenges all of us to step up our game. Cheryl stands in the gap for us, calling us to a purpose that will drive better results for our organizations, while putting the needs of our people and customers ahead of our own.”—Scott MacLellan, CEO, TouchPoint Support Services, a Compass Group company“By focusing on the purpose-driven success of those she leads, paradoxically, Cheryl Bachelder gets the results we all want from our organizations. Dare to Serve is about the gutsy principles she applied to a business desperately in need of a turnaround and the spectacular results she achieved.”—Tim Irwin, PhD, bestselling author of Impact“This book turned my thinking upside-down. Cheryl shares her road-tested wisdom and shows how and why Dare-to-Serve leadership works so brilliantly. This is a game-changing book and should be required reading for all leaders.”—Art Barter, President and CEO, Datron Holdings, Inc., and founder and CEO, Servant Leadership Institute“Dare to Serve is a game changer! The principles outlined create exponential results far beyond what the individual ego will allow. Boards today are looking for Dare-to-Serve type leaders to ignite possibilities in their organizations. This is a must-read for leaders everywhere!”—Jane Edison Stevenson, Vice Chairman, Board & CEO Services, Korn Ferry, and coauthor of Breaking Away

Miller Cheryl Bachelder, the CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, pens a clear-eyed, forthright case study for servant leadership. Although the key theme of her book is serving others, she forgoes the platitudes and "feel good" elements that tend to accompany this type of message and instead offers a specific game plan for how she helped turn this restaurant chain around by daring to serve. One of the things I most appreciated about this book is Bachelder’s willingness to take an honest look at her flaws (even talented CEOs have them!) and describe how, earlier in her career, she was focused on achievement based on only her personal goals. When she repositioned the way she saw leadership—as an opportunity to serve others—she was able to achieve results in a different way. This humble stance makes the advice in the book seem accessible. Indeed, humility is a strong theme in the book, appearing again and again throughout the pages. She offers this important distinction about humility: “Humility is not being a doormat, it is simply thinking less about our own needs—and more about the needs of others.” Bachelder says this shift in focus allows us to “exit [the leadership] spotlight” and instead shine the lights on other’s contributions. This book has the right mix of "how to" advice interspersed with personal anecdotes. It would be perfect for any person with leadership responsibility (at work, at home, or in the community) who wishes to make a bigger impact.

McConaughy I learned about servant leadership in the 1970's and, when being in positions of leadership since then, have always tried to live my life according to the philosophy and practices it represents. Robert Greenleaf, the originator of servant leadership, proposed that leadership was a continuum with people who wanted to serve first on one end and those who wanted to lead first on the other end. The leader first was typically after power and possessions. The servant first was focused on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. Enter Cheryl Bachelder forty years later, on becoming CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., along with her leadership team rediscovering the idea of servant leadership. This is a great book about what a difference servant leadership can make in a major corporation. It's a story about a major change of organizational culture, a story about rebuilding trust where it had been lost, and a story about turning a chain of restaurants from a financial downturn to unprecedented success. It's fun to read. It's instructive. It's engaging. It reinvigorated my personal commitment to the philosophy of servant leadership. It reestablished my willingness to dare to serve.

By Rebecca Henderson Cheryl Bachelder’s “Dare to Serve” is a quick and easy read, but filled with absolute timeless wisdom. Perhaps the subtitle, “How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others” sums everything in the book up in a tidy phrase.“Dare to Serve” could easily be read in an afternoon, but I urge you to read it more carefully while letting each morsel of wisdom – and there are many – fully sink into your mind. I love quotes, and Bachelder has filled the book with many. My favorite is one by Helen Keller on page 81: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” In addition to quotes, the author has placed pithy Dare-to-Serve Reflections strategically throughout the book. The one most meaningful to me is on page 60: “If you knew the top-priority values of the people on your team, how would you lead more effectively?”While Cheryl Bachelder has written many important sentences in “Dare to Serve”, to me the most important one is found in her bio, on page 182. She states that she and her husband are raising their children “with no manual other than the Bible.” Wonderfully wise words well written!

A great addition to The Perseid Collapse Series from an award winning author By Patricia Wilson Yes, Alex Shaw is a known author of international political thrillers. Bringing his talent for fast paced intrigue to Konkoly's Perseid series is a given. In Blackline we quickly learn there is more to the story than previously revealed. While on holiday in Camden, Maine, Jack Tate, a British SAS agent with an unusual command of the Russian language, overhears a conversation that piques his interest. Hours later the conversation will come to mean something to Tate as it becomes clear that America has come under attack behind the phenomenon of a meteorite striking the Atlantic just off the coast of Maine. Are the Russian men somehow involved in the attack and did they have anything to do with the murders of three Camden residents shortly before the attack? If you are a fan of The Perseid Collapse Series you will be pleased with Blackline. It fits right in and Alex writes an exciting story. If you have not read any of The Perseid Collapse Series find out why it has taken Kindle Worlds by storm. Reading Steve Konkoly's, (the mastermind of the series,) collection will place you in good company.

By Jamie Mason Since the PERSEID COLLAPSE series has opened to other authors, we have seen the "Event" - the EMP and meteor strike that cripple the US - and consequent tales of survivors told from different perspectives. Everywhere, government officials, citizens and patriots scramble to respond. But what about a vacationing British secret agent? As far as ex-SAS trooper Jack Tate is concerned, Camden MA is the perfect place for a quiet getaway. But the professional assassination of a retired US senator, along with the presence of a trio of mysterious Russians, combine to turn Jack's vacation into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. In the hours just before and immediately after the Event, dark plans are put in motion that have Jack, aided by a ham radio operator and a local sheriff, embarking in a borrowed Cooper Mini to track down the team of Russian agents and get answers.BLACKLINE is the first in a 3-novella PERSEID COLLAPSE arc by British thriller writer Alex Shaw. Fans of his Aidan Snow thrillers (COLD BLACK, COLD BLOOD and COLD EAST) will delight in Alex's unique take on the Perseid world while new readers will have the pleasure of discovering an author who combines the fast pace of Jack Higgins and Brad Thor with the clipped humor and hurtling action of a Bond film. Look for more Jack Tate adventures to come in future installments of the PERSEID world.

Beautiful adult coloring book with a wide variety of interpreted designs By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:9c60bdc548b85343ada34bed955a1bf0]]Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.I really like this book. What is different about this one from others that I have is that six different artist have contributed to the designs. It makes for a variety of coloring opportunities. Some designs are simple – almost child-like. I can color those as-is or put some of my doodling/art skills to work and add some unique elements to the designs. Others are moderately challenging and will be good ones to work on when I simply want to color. Finally, there are designs with a lot of intricate and small detail. They can be colored, but it will be a challenge and one that I will enjoy because these designs are so beautiful.Physically, the book is very well made. The designs are printed on one side with details from the books written on the back of the page. The pages are thick and white; however, they are not perforated. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so removing pages from the book will be a little more difficult. Most of the designs merge into the binding, but the portions that might be lost if I cut the pages out are not the central theme of the design.None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. My water-based markers did not leak through; however, my ultra-fine Sharpies and Copics did. In any case, I would recommend putting a waste sheet of some sort (chipboard, freezer paper, cardstock, etc.) under the page you are working on to keep ink from possibly getting on the following pages. In summary, an beautiful coloring book with very different interpretations of the subject by various designers. The book is very well made but could be improved upon if the pages were perforated for easy removal.

Given that it's Outlander, I was a little worried that it might be an "adult" coloring book, but that isn't the case. Nothing indecent here! It's simply marketed for adults who enjoy coloring, not children. If you aren't familiar with Outlander, it's the first in a series of novels (eight, currently) written by Diana Gabaldon, about a WWII combat nurse who accidentally travels 200 years back through time, going from the 1940s to the 1740s. She makes a new life for herself there, including a new husband. The books contain lots of history, adventure, drama, romance, and a touch of sci-fi/fantasy. This coloring book seems to focus on the first book only, depicting scenes from various chapters. It's not inspired by the new TV show, with two exceptions. The closeup of Claire's wedding gown shows the acorn embroidery from her wedding gown in the show, a detail that isn't mentioned in the book. And Fort William is actually Blackness Castle, a fort near Edinburgh, Scotland, that dates to the 1600s. I've been there, so I recognized it instantly when it appeared on the TV show, and when I flipped through the coloring book, I likewise recognized it. Other than that, however, the scenery and characters aren't based on the TV series. The artwork was drawn by several different artists, so the difference in artistic styles is noticeable. Some of the pages are more simplistic, for those who prefer filling in large patches of color, where you can zone out and not worry about what you're doing. Others are highly detailed, for those who'd rather color intricate scenes. The paper is heavy, so you can use either markers or colored pencils. I'm not sure it's heavy enough for watercolors. Each opposing page has a quote from the book, which means you don't have to color both sides of a page. I always hate when they make you color both sides of a page, because sometimes the colors bleed through, or you get burnishing, but that isn't a concern here. Overall, it seems to be very high quality. My one complaint is that there could have been a little more research into historical costuming by the artists. Some are fine, but there's one scene in particular where Claire's shirt blouses out at the waist, even though she's supposed to be wearing a snugly fitted, stiffly boned 18th century bodice---which most assuredly cannot blouse out. It was disappointing, since I was really looking forward to seeing the costumes described in the books brought to life in these drawings. The kilts and men's costumes seemed decent, although I have very little knowledge of 18th century traditional Scottish clothing, so I can't really comment on the accuracy of those.I'll give it four stars, because while it's extremely nice, it's not quite spectacular enough to warrant five stars. Recommended for adults who enjoy coloring, or who enjoy the Outlander books. Would make an excellent gift for any fan! If you're looking for more gift ideas, there's a collection of bobble-head dolls by Funko Pop, along with a nice calendar, the soundtrack for the TV show, and two "Outlandish Companion" books.

Hoping a Dragonfly in Amber OOCB will follow By Amazon Customer Selfish thing that I am, my thought as I looked through the OOCB was, “Oh, I hope they publish one for every book in the series!”Note: This coloring book is not based on the Starz series, the actors, etc. The art in this book is the artists’ (6 of them) interpretations.I love it. There are 6 artists so there are different drawing styles. Most are detailed drawings, some of which are close-ups (Ellen’s bracelets, Ellen’s pearls around Claire’s neck, dirks, crests, etc.) There are very detailed wide scenes, i.e. the mill at Lallybroch, Castle Leoch, etc., as well. There are Redcoats, Highlanders, a stable scene, a castle, a fort, Mrs. Baird’s Inn, Jamie and Claire (one particularly detailed drawing of Claire in lovely dress), Jenny & Ian, the women dancing at Craig na Dun, Frank, Claire at the Stones, Geillis with a unique way of holding her pestle, a beautiful scene of Claire in the herb garden surrounded by doves with a dovecot nearby, Colum in his study (one of my Faves!), a close-up, detailed drawing of about a dozen people at mealtime at the castle (lots of food at the table – another fave). “Claire’s wolf” makes an appearance as well, and there are many others. The OOCB follows the Outlander timeline in that first we see Claire at the stones and the last pic is that of a ship. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think the rendition of (some) the physical body types could have been better. (Not to match the book exactly – or the series – but just generally _better_.)There is one drawing per page and on the opposite facing page, the Outlander quote which inspired the drawing. The pages are sturdy and not the least bit flimsy. The OOCB cover is very attractive as is the overall book itself. The partially colored picture on the cover is also found on the inside with no coloring. Newbies to adult coloring can use the cover photo as a guide for use of color, shading, etc.I bought one for my sister and she loves it as well. Next up: Dragonfly in Amber OOCB-DIA!Also, $10.89 is a very good price.ETA: I almost forgot: There are simple drawings, and more complicated ones. I would divide them roughly into three levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and requires planning and concentration. There are no mandalas, if that's what you're specifically looking for (there are mandalas everywhere, so they can be easily found elsewhere) but there is quite a variety of subject and style. This is a book anyone can enjoy, regardless of their level of experience with adult coloring books.Enjoy!
