Masterful suspense By Betty Ridge I've been a reader and fan of William Bernhardt for decades, since I first picked up one of the early Ben Kincaid novels. But I've never been into games since I stopped playing Monopoly and Clue as a pre-teen, so I admit I had my doubts at first about The Game Master. Would it be full of gaming trivia that would turn me off? Not so. Bernhardt pulls the reader in with the first chapter about a young woman running for her life. As the plot develops, the game becomes one threatening human existence, with continual plot turns and settings that take the reader around the world.Bernhardt, best known for his Ben Kincaid series of legal thrillers (and I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting Ben's promised return), has displayed his versatility with such works as Nemesis and Dark Eye. The Game Master once again proves this writing master's ability to spin a plot that keeps the pages turning — or, in the Kindle version, tapping the screen to move to the next one.My recommendation? Read it and enjoy finding out for yourself how the game master reacts to each dilemma he encounters.

A Page-turner for a Snowy Day -- or Any Day By Julia Harmon William Bernhardt’s latest thriller, The Game Master, came to me at a time when I was ready for a break from my usual reading practice. I have been reading (and enjoying) The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins and Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett on my Kindle and both are fairly lengthy. When The Game Master appeared, I decided to devote all of my time to it, also putting aside my regular nonfiction, periodical and writer-related reading – I was on a reading vacation. What I didn’t anticipate was that I would get so caught up in the story that I would let some other things slide, including getting ready for company and a typing project with a deadline. But vacations (and snow days) are times when you suspend the rules and enjoy yourself and that’s what I did.I am not a heavy reader in the thriller/mystery genres. I read fairly complex character-driven literary or general fiction usually about families or friendships. I was a bit concerned about writing a review for a book that I might not like. I like to consider my reviews as recommendations; I will rarely finish a book that I wouldn’t recommend. I needn’t have worried. If you have an interest in games, modern or ancient, this book will keep you engaged. (My one criticism of the book is that the cover, which pictures a chess board, may be misleading. I am not a chess player and was afraid that I might be left behind – no worry.) An interesting exercise for the Bernhardt family might be to guess the number of games that are mentioned and/or described in their father’s book. Expertise in all the games is not necessary because diagrams guide the reader.Thrown in for good measure are action scenes that take place in the Bibliotheque nationale de France and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. What more could a librarian/bookwoman ask for?The answer, of course, is a great story – one which keeps you turning the pages from the beginning, when the “Game Master” sets out to rescue his kidnapped daughter at any cost, until the end, when the world is seconds away from the apocalypse and it seems that no human can turn it around. We are introduced to world figures who bear an uncomfortable likeness to those who have their hands on the controls of our planet, whether by destiny or design. We learn a little about mathematics and game theory and philosophy. And we experience (probably without noticing) excellent pacing.I sat in on a writer’s conference session by William Bernhardt where he introduced the story arc, and led us through the parts of a novel and where suspense and tension should build to the climax. I don’t remember him using a particular novel to illustrate, but would suggest that The Game Maker would be good suggested reading before participation in such a session. Or for a snow day. Or on a vacation. Or a long weekend . . .

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An intricate puzzle-mystery wrapped in a doomsday thriller By Kevin Calvey Great read! Better even than the author's excellent Ben Kincaid legal thrillers. A swaggering chess and poker master uses his expertise to solve clues to find his kidnapped daughter, only to find himself drawn into geopolitical intrigue with frightening technological implications. Evocative of The Name of the Rose, The Da Vinci Code, or even some Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers mysteries, in the intricacy of the clues, but with a faster-paced thriller story. Even if you don't like chess, SCRABBLE, puzzles, or card games, The Game Master is a grand champion!

“Along with Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich practically invented the genre of noir.” —Newsday This novel, written in 1948 is the last installment of the so-called Black Series which includes "The Bride Wore Black", "The Black Path of Fear", "The Black Angel", "Black Curtain" and "Black Alibi". At one time, Woolrich wrote in a letter to a devoted fan by the name of William Thailing that "Rendezvous in Black" and "The Black Angel" were his two favorite novels. Some scholars agree that "Rendezvous in Black" could easily be considered Woolrich's last piece of work created during his major writing period published under his own name. He had one other major work published under William Irish, "I Married a Dead Man". On a mild midwestern night in the early 1940s, Johnny Marr leans against a drugstore wall. He’s waiting for Dorothy, his fiancée, and tonight is the last night they’ll be meeting here, for it’s May 31st, and June 1st marks their wedding day. But she’s late, and Johnny soon learns of a horrible accident—an accident involving a group of drunken men, a low-flying charter plane, and an empty liquor bottle. In one short moment Johnny loses all that matters to him and his life is shattered. He vows to take from these men exactly what they took from him. After years of planning, Johnny begins his quest for revenge, and on May 31st of each year—always on May 31st—wives, lovers, and daughters are suddenly no longer safe. Do not pass up this chance to encounter one of the most startling, emotionally rattling, and beautifully written pieces of noir in American literature. 'Rendezvous in Black' is nothing short of a masterpiece: strange, horrifying, sometimes illogical, stark, achingly poetic, and ultimately devastating. - Claude Avary, Amazon Reviews Cornell George Hopley-Woolrich (4 December 1903 – 25 September 1968) is one of America's best crime and noir writers who sometimes wrote under the pseudonyms William Irish and George Hopley. He's often compared to other celebrated crime writers of his day, Dashiell Hammett, Erle Stanley Gardner and Raymond Chandler. He attended New York's Columbia University but left school in 1926 without graduating when his first novel, "Cover Charge", was published. "Cover Charge" was one of six of his novels that he credits as inspired by the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Woolrich soon turned to pulp and detective fiction, often published under his pseudonyms. His best known story today is his 1942 "It Had to Be Murder" for the simple reason that it was adapted into the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie"Rear Window"starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It was remade as a television film by Christopher Reeve in 1998. He's considered by many to be the inventor of the noir genre and many screenplays have been based on his mysteries, including "Night Has a Thousand Eyes" and "The Leopard Man".

95 of 98 people found the following review helpful. Back in print! A masterpiece of suspense from the master! By Claude Avary At last! "Rendezvous in Black," the greatest suspense novel from the greatest suspense writer of all time, Cornell Woolrich, is back in print in a handsome trade paperback edition. Do not pass up this chance to encounter one of the most startling, emotionally rattling, and beautifully written pieces of noir in American literature. "Rendezvous in Black" is nothing short of a masterpiece: strange, horrifying, sometimes illogical, stark, achingly poetic, and ultimately devastating.Cornell Woolrich (1903-1968) was the father of noir. Originally an author of `disaffected youth' novels in the jazz era, Woolrich turned to suspense and mystery stories for the pulp magazines in the mid-thirties. In 1940 he wrote the novel "The Bride Wore Black," kicking off a hugely creative period in which he wrote eleven novels (sometimes under the pseudonyms William Irish or George Hopely) between 1940 and 1948, concluding with "I Married a Dead Man" (available in the compilation "Crime Novels: American Noir of the 30s and 40s" and also one of his best works). Woolrich then entered a long phase of writer's block, turning out a few more novels and stories before he died an alcoholic recluse. His work is deeply concerned with doom and fate, people trapped in an uncaring world, the slow loss of love, and the inevitability of death. Through it all flows his incredible sense of pacing -- he can wring you dry with "races against the clock" that make your chest pound like race car piston -- and his stunning word magic that can break your heart with just a sentence."Rendezvous in Black" is the second-to-last novel of his major period, and it seems to return to the plot of "The Bride Wore Black"...at least on the surface. In "The Bride Wore Black," a woman named Julie Kileen loses her husband to a bizarre accident on their wedding day. Julie then goes on a quest to track down the five men she believes are responsible for the accident, and kill them one by one after inserting herself into their lives. "Rendezvous in Black" reverses the sexes, and adds an extra twist. Johnny Marr, an anonymous, average young man, loses his fiancee a few days before their marriage in a weird, bolt-from-the-blue accident (the perfect Woolrich example of the random cruelty of the universe). Marr eventually snaps, and discovers the identities of the men he feels are responsible for the accident. He then seeks to slowly, meticulously track down each one, discover who the most important woman in the man's life is (daughter, wife, protege), and kill her, so that man will forever know the pain that he feels. It's a grim, frightening premise. Woolrich repeats the episodic structure of "Bride": after the opening chapter introducing the main character and his quest, each chapter after that switches to the P.O.V. of the next person on Marr's `hit list.' But "Rendezvous" isn't just a rehash of "Bride." As Woolrich's biographer, Francis M. Nevins, pointed out, it is "Bride" as it should have been, written with greater emotional involvement and deeper horror and suspense. It seems as if Woolrich was trying to correct the flaws of the earlier novel.Correct them he does: "Rendezvous in Black" opens with a long, stunning chapter, "Parting," that captures perfectly the horror of losing a loved one, and then contains one of best portraits I've ever read of a descent into insanity. It's one of Woolrich's best sustained pieces of emotional writing. Each chapter after that, Woolrich tortures us with the suspense as we meet the next target of Marr's horrid quest. Woolrich's use of suspense here is brilliant: as in Hitchcock, we know WHAT will happen, but never WHEN, HOW, or even WHO (which woman in the man's life is Marr's target?). Since we don't know what Marr looks like or what fake name he is using, we aren't even sure which man in the chapter is actually the killer! Meanwhile, the police start to string things together, and with each chapter, Woolrich screws down the suspense tighter and tighter. The second to last chapter is a massive race against death that will probably have you locked in a room reading with sweaty, shaking hands. Even though there are logic flaws in the story the size meteor craters (this is Woolrich's way of showing how universe's basic illogic and unfairness), you won't notice them. Woolrich holds you in an unbreakable spell.Read this book. It is an American classic. You will never forget its power. And you'll encourage the publication of more Woolrich classics. Look forward to re-prints of "Black Alibi" and "Night Has a Thousand Eyes." When you discover Cornell Woolrich, you will never be the same again.

35 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Titanic and soul shattering By Jeffrey Leach How could anyone not love Cornell Woolrich? He ranks right up there with James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler as one of the godfathers of pitch-black noir. Unfortunately, Woolrich's voluminous short stories and his many novels for the most part remain out of print. No excuse exists to merit such blatant disrespect. Happily, several Woolrich works have begun to reemerge to the delight of noir fans. For example, Woolrich biographer and all around noir aficionado Frances M. Nevins edited a collection of fourteen delightfully bleak stories in the recent "Night & Fear." Now we have "Rendezvous in Black" thanks to the Modern Library publishing house. We can only hope that other novellas head to store shelves soon, specifically "The Bride Wore Black" and "Night Has A Thousand Eyes." But even more fascinating than his stories is the author's life. Cornell Woolrich lived from one black depression to another. He worshipped his mother, drank incessantly, and kept his true sexuality repressed. It was an overriding fear of his mortality and the cruel randomness of the world around him, however, which fueled his desolate visions. Sad to say, but Woolrich's miseries have given generations of fans something to sing about ever since."Rendezvous in Black" excels as an archetype of white knuckled, totter on the edge of your seat noir, a story even better than the author's phenomenal and oft copied "I Married a Dead Man." This yarn concerns the activities of one Johnny Marr, an ecstatic young man set to marry the love of his life. When his girl, Dorothy, perishes in a freak accident involving a bottle dropped from a low flying plane, Marr's sanity melts away. The desolate young lover discovers the names of five men who bear the blame for the tragedy that destroyed his life, and he promptly embarks on a mission to wreak bloody revenge on these strangers. Marr will go after the people these men love the most in life, using any tricks he can muster in an effort to avenge his shattered life. Woolrich makes sure the reader understands exactly how far gone Marr is in the first chapter, as we see the young man continue to turn up at the couple's favorite meeting place night after night, waiting desperately for a woman who will never show up. Marr's activities assume a mindless repetition, an unremitting yet senseless hope that Dorothy will eventually appear, thus setting the tone for his single minded, relentless revenge plots later on.A rendezvous for each of Marr's enemies, five in all, unfold with cold, methodical precision. The first rendezvous achieves the least suspense of the five, a short chapter serving as a post-mortem of Marr's first act of revenge. It is here we learn how Marr will attack his enemies (through important women in their lives), and meet the cop, Detective Cameron, who takes on the case. The second rendezvous will set your nerves on edge as an illicit affair leads to disastrous consequences, including a vengeance seeking wife and a walk to the electric chair, for the second man on Johnny's list. In the third rendezvous, a wedge driven between a man and his wife results in a murder and a suicide. As the fourth act unfolds, a conceited, secretive daughter discovers the hard way that she should have listened to Detective Cameron and her parents. The denouement, the fifth rendezvous, involves that last man on the list and his childhood love. It also tries to show that nothing, neither running to the ends of the earth nor the best laid plans, will deter fate. If you feel like you've been chewed up and spit out by the time you reach the end of the book, don't fret. This reaction is normal when reading Cornell Woolrich. It is, in fact, exactly what you want to feel. The strength of "Rendezvous in Black" comes not from its staccato prose and descriptive metaphors, although these elements do play a large part in the success of the novel, but in Woolrich's bleak cosmology built on an unholy trinity of love turned bad, paranoia, and crushing fate. The accident that claims Dorothy, a bottle falling from the heavens, and the subsequent disasters visited upon those individuals Marr deems responsible, displays the writer's belief in a unsystematic, frequently cruel world where events unfold with ruthless certainty. Love is a good thing, or can be a good thing, but too often it morphs into something that can fuel neverending hostility and destruction. Richard Dooling, the author of the introduction to this edition of the novel, does an excellent job explicating the numerous themes in Woolrich's writings, a better job than I could possibly hope to do in a short review. But you don't need really need an introduction to see that the mindset behind the book is seriously depressing. The number of continuity errors, implausible events, and other mistakes in "Rendezvous in Black" leap off the page. I find it impossible to believe someone could drop a bottle out of an airplane as late the 1940s, for example. Too, I kept wondering whether Johnny Marr ever aged, as a considerable period of time passes from Dorothy's demise to the end of the book. How could Johnny possibly have wooed the teenaged Madeleine if he was in his late twenties? And considering Woolrich describes Detective Cameron as a bumbler, the cop possesses a tenacity that eventually pays off in the end. None of these problems takes anything away from the sheer power of the novel. There were times I literally felt like I couldn't stand the tension anymore, and any book that can cause that sort of sensation deserves attention. If you love noir, you need to read this one immediately.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Yes, a masterpiece! By Charlotte Pen This is a suspense story in which one knows the killer and his victims and where there is nothing random about his choice of victims. The murders are acts of revenge against an unpremeditated, accidental death - a death that one can only characterize as 'fateful.' A bottle has been thrown from an airplane, killing a young woman standing by a store window in a busy street. She is waiting for her fiance. Out of the hundreds of people walking that street, it is she who has been dealt this fatal blow. It is an accident that could not have been foreseen, though it can be argued, that its negligence might have been anticipated. That is the beginning of the story. Woolrich wastes no time in setting the psychological tone. Her fiance arrives at their place of rendezvous, the scene of the accident, looks at the stricken woman, denies that it is his "Dorothy", then leaves the scene. Despite this initial denial, he knows, of course, that it is she, and from that moment a cataclysmic change occurs in his personality and his present world falls apart - a world of romance, marriage and well being. He sheds all innocence and becomes a man singularly possessed - a man seeking revenge against the carelessness of other men - determined to have them pay for this carelessness in the same way he has been forced to pay - destruction of what they prize most.It is a story, wonderfully told - direct, gripping and so thoroughly credible that you read through it quickly, hoping against hope that it will have a happy ending. But it doesn't.

In this book the Sanskrit is transliterated into English script. The English alphabetical order is used throughout to make it easier for those who struggle with the order of the traditional dictionary. A considerable vocabulary is included which provides most of the words used in secondary school examinations. Many tables are supplied for nouns and verbs etc. All the information for each topic is gathered together so that one does'nt have to endlessly scour through the book. The book has been in use (and on trial) for a number of years and students find it a very handy reference. The book is particularly interesting and useful for those with an interest in Indian Philosophy.

However By Paul Phillips As a reasonably new student of Sanskrit, I have been using an earlier edition of this book occasionally and have found it most useful. However, I have found this version to be excellently presented, clear and very easy to work with. It is also a particularly supportive reference for the Sanskrit student when used as a companion volume to the Sanskrit Dictionary by the same author. I have no hesitation in recommending both books to students of Sanskrit, at any level.

By Sandra Gonzales Fasten your seat belts and get ready for the ride of your life to places with Sarah Roberts that you never thought you would go. A THRILLER INDEED!! I devoured this novel and was up until 2am reading the last page. I dare you to try and put it down. Jonas Saul knows how to grab you and keep your eyes on the pages until the end. As usual - a fabulous read. Thanks Jonas from a faithful fan who can't wait until book 14.

The horrible evil she sees is hard to imagine, but each of her stories makes you glad she and Vivian are willing to take on the evil and eradicate it. Looking forward to the next eradication!

By Bootsiesgirl2 I love how Jonas paints Sarah into seemingly impossible to get out of places and guess how it will happen. This story was fairly harsh as far as treatment toward women. But, it made for exciting reading. There are so many bad things happening in the world, but when I read about it in fiction I can just relax and enjoy it. I hope a lot of young women read this so they won't put themselves into compromising situations. Great ending!! I bought the next before I reviewed this. A FAN for years. I highly recommend this book, and the whole series.

To most people Jamaica is sun, sea and rum drinks by the pool. But Miami Jones and Danielle Castle don't vacation like most people. After witnessing an assault on a young man in Montego Bay, Miami and Danielle are hired to protect a young athlete with Olympic dreams.

But there are lots of athletes with those dreams, and not all of them play by the rules. Miami and Danielle find themselves up against corrupt officials, athlete managers with a kit-bag full of dirty tricks, and a local police force that might be in it up to their necks. In a paradise where running fast is the national pastime, Miami and Danielle must go at full throttle to protect their client and help him hit the finish line alive.

˃˃˃ "Put Spenser and Travis McGee together, and you have Miami Jones..." - Amazon reviewer for the Miami Jones series.˃˃˃ Q and A with the Author

Q: Why a Florida mystery series?

A: A lot of things came together to make the series happen. Of course I always loved Florida mystery novels, there’s a whole lineage of them. And all those crazy Florida adventures of Mssrs Hiaasen and Dorsey and co. My family moved to the Sunshine State, and everything about the place made me want to create a bunch of fun loving characters. The kinds of people you’d love to share a beer with, in a casual place with a plate of smoked fish dip. But the kinds of folks who live by their convictions - salt of the earth you might say. There’s a lot of folks like that in Florida, along with more whack jobs per square miles than anywhere I’ve ever been.

Q: Who is Miami Jones? Is he you?

A: He’s not me, let’s start there. He’s got a bucket load more bravado than me. But he’s a thinker. His baseball career didn’t define him, but it did help form him, and I wanted to explore that side of it - the fact that most college sportsmen and women don’t go pro, and those that do mostly don’t last, and somehow that gets looked on as a sad thing. Miami doesn’t believe it is. Pro sports taught Miami to fake it until you make it, but at the same time to never believe your own press. Mostly he doesn’t. He’s too cheeky by half, but don’t we all like the idea of serving up a good one liner when we don’t really have the guts to do it? He’s not one of these private investigators who shoot to kill without repercussions. He feels bad when he acts bad, but it doesn’t stop him doing it if required.

Q: Is he a hard boiled detective?

A: I call him soft boiled. It’s what happens to normal people when left out in the Florida sun. He calls them as he sees them, but he’d never call his girlfriend a dame. She’d tear him a new one if he did.

Q: There’s a sports theme in the series. Is it a men’s adventure?

A: Yes and no. Lots of ladies enjoy sports so that doesn’t mean anything. But the sports are infused in Miami’s thinking, rather than being pervasive in the stories. More than half of my readers on my email list are women, so it might be a men’s adventure, but it’s not just for male readers. Dead Fast is also an international mystery and crime story. I hope it's infused with that Jamaican flavor. It's a beautiful island, and the people are wonderful, but like Florida there's a dark underbelly there.

Q: Speaking of women, Miami’s girlfriend knows how to handle him. Will we see her in her own private eye series?

A: That she does. I hate those stories and movies where the love interest is nothing more than someone to serve the martinis. Danielle is Miami’s equal in every way. But no, I don't see her in her own book. For a start, she’s not a private investigator, she’s a sheriff’s deputy. She believes in the rule of law and doing things by the book. Mostly. But I like her, so maybe one day she’ll have a wicked sister who becomes a bounty hunter. On second thought, Janet already did that.

Finished it last night and loved it. I absolutely love all of the characters in these books. Read them. You'll love them. Start at the beginning with the first so you can learn who they all are and it's so great to keep in touch with them. Keep writing, I'm ready for the next.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Terrific By bloodworth roberts I've read all so far and am looking forward to my next treat. Keep them coming. Great likeable main characters. Cheerful and normal...for Florida, anyway!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An island paradise with two-legged parasites that prey on the poor and underprivileged By Sam B. Wagner Evil men in high places and entrenched corruption become a challenge when they focus their hooks on a young athlete who just wants to run. Miami Jones gets involved, sorts it out, but not before hired muscle and guns put him in great danger. Another fascinating read and well worth the time. Great grasp of the local color and action.

This is my first time reading a mystery by Jeanne Glidewell, but it won't be my last! From the first page I knew I would like Rapella Ripple. She says it straight! A woman after my own heart. The things she does to solve the mystery to help clear her friend are hilarious! She's not afraid to do anything, and just about everything, to get to the truth. It's a fast paced, quick reading mystery that is entertaining all the way through. No dull moments for Rapella and crew. It always has you guessing who the culprit might be--from one person to the next. It's a fun read, and I can't wait to find out what Rapella is up to in her next adventure. I have definitely found another series that I will look forward to reading with each release.

Trust me By Yvonne Pineiro It is not surprising that this new mystery by Jeanne Glidewell was such a great read. Trust me, you won't guess "who dunnit". At one point I thought I had it all figured out but nope, I was totally off LOL. This of course is part of the fun of reading her books. She keeps you guessing while you are hysterical laughing. Rip and Rappella are so endearing. You feel like you know them because they are so real in the way they interact with one another. If you have not read Jeanne Glidewell, you MUST! I've read them all. I promise you'll be hooked on her characters, sense of humor and style. ENJOY!

I have read all of Ms. Glidewell's other books in her Lexie Starr series so was excited to see this book. I just loved the main characters in this book, Rip and Rap, as they seem so real and so like people I've met. It's a great mystery and I loved then ending.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. 32 Beautiful Designs to Inspire both Art and Faith By iiiireader “Expressions of Faith” is exactly that – many beautiful sayings and Biblical quotes that express one's faith. There are 32 designs in this coloring book and, for me, it is quite different from other coloring books I have had in the past. The artist, Joanne Fink, has provided designs which she intends for the colorist to add elements to which will enhance the design and make it personal. She provides drawing lessons over the first few pages of the book to show how to add your own details in drawing first and then to color second. She also provides examples from various colorists/artists who have taken her drawing and made them so different, it is hard to believe they started from the same point. I am deeply appreciative of these lessons as I have not tried this before. Seeing the variety and how beautiful each turned out, I will certainly use this coloring book to try out this new skill. Some of the pictures I will include will show how different the finished designs look from one another. The book itself is quite nice. It is printed on a good weight paper in a bright white. While the instruction pages are printed on both sides, the designs are printed on only one side (back left blank) and the pages are perforated for easy removal from the book. If you prefer to leave your pages in the book, I have tested pencils and gel pens with no problems but you may want to put a piece of cardstock or heavyweight paper below your work if you are using markers in case they seep through. While I color to relieve stress and anxiety at the end of the day, coloring in this book gives me the opportunity to think about my faith and to allow it to give me purpose. The book provides me both relaxation and inspiration which is a wonderful way to end my day.

Beautiful pictures, clever ideas that give you starting places and then lets you add the finishing touches you want. 4 pictures with crosses, 2 angels, plus many more great looks and sayings. Ms. Fink gives you several ideas on how pictures could be finished. Love her style and books.

I love how she has both some examples of how others took one of the pages and interpreted in so many different ways and how she includes some lessons on how you might add to the pages if you choose. The pictures are beautiful to color also just the way Joanne drew them.

Bob Gilbert’s debut novel Mintwood Place is a delightfully fresh version in the noir tradition, offering the reader a contemporary “Casablanca” in Washington D.C. The book’s narrator, Renaissance man Joe Green, has plenty to say about love, politics and the male psyche in this page-turning romantic suspense. Joe runs a bookstore and a bistro, and painfully navigates a modern divorce while the Senate Intelligence Committee investigates his relationship with Cosmo, a protégé, who has recently been paroled after serving five years in prison for the ambiguous killing of a local black youth. Green, a proud Jersey boy, can all at once relax by watching his tortoises, hand out liberal advice to his three teenagers, and pack serious heat. He is a twenty-first century American male if ever there was one.

Eisenstodt I'm with Larry Kahaner - and I know it was the DC setting that drew me in and the knowledge some of the action took place in a small bookstore. Begs for a sequel at least for those of us who got caught up in the characters inhabiting the book. Nice shoutout for Busboys!Oh and "Joannie" with two "n"s? Mine isn't tho many make it that.

I pay it high compl By Larry Kahaner This is the not the kind of book I usually read. I'm partial to high intensity thrillers but Gilbert struck a nerve with me. I can't quite explain it - although the DC venue is a plus as I live there. The book was well written, thoughtfully written, in fact. Lots of dialogue which was well done without being distracting. Every once is a while the author's knowledge of history and book smarts come through without being annoying.I pay it high compliment when I say that the book was just damn enjoyable to read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Story? By Riverlizzie Reviews There seems to be a story there, but it is never completed to satisfaction. Characterization, on the other hand, was quite well done. The author is potentially a really good writer, but I also found this book unnecessarily crude.

Goddard I picked up this book on Kindle Unlimited after hearing a few mothers at my child's school talking about how they were using apple cider vinegar to not only clean but also in their diets. I was confused at first but then after I got into reading the book I started to see the bigger picture. There are so many uses for ACV that I never knew existed. The book pointed out to me that the ACV that is talked about is not the every day distilled version that you see with the other vinegar on the grocery store shelves it's the organic kind with the mothers enzyme that you need to use. The book also has a recipe on how to make your own ACV. I'll tell you though, unless you have the patience of an angel you are better off ordering some online. This book was very informative and easy to follow.

This book explains in detail about its various properties and I learned about its uses for various health problems. It is truly versatile in its use and I found out it can even be used to clean bathrooms, remove glue and many other things. There are many great recipes as well. Overall, a very valuable book.

By Kevin Lintner Having been raised by my grandmother who was born right at the turn of the 20th century, I knew of all kinds of home remedies for all kinds of ailments. One of the things she swore by the most was apple cider vinegar. Not the distilled kind, the distilling process removes the most beneficial element known as "the mother." Raw ACV has been used for years not only as a salad topping, (I like it sprinkled on steamed green beans from my garden) but also for lowering blood sugar and helping problems with digestion.Pearl Robinson has written a very informative guide to the benefits of ACV and has included some health benefits that even I did not know existed. The book is easy to read and to understand and if you are a big believer in organic remedies like I am, you will find this very useful.

Flowers can be dangerous By Lucretia Martenet One would think that running a flowere shop in the wilds of England's Lake District would be about as peaceable a job as any, however, Persimmon, the heroine of this series, seems to stumble on murders without even trying. She also survives encounters which would do in most. Tope's characters always have more dimensional qualities than usually found in mysteries.

About the Author Brigid George grew up in a small Australian town called Orbost in the state of Victoria. She spent her childhood chasing snakes and lizards down hollow logs, playing Hansel and Gretel in the bush with her brothers, climbing trees, searching the local rubbish tip for books to read and generally behaving like a feral child. To avoid her boisterous brothers she often escaped into the hayshed with a book. Hours and hours of reading from an early age trained her for life as a writer. In primary school her teachers called her ‘the one with the Enid Blyton touch’. Her love of reading murder mysteries as an adult has now evolved into a love of writing them. As a teenager she had short stories published in one of Australia’s national magazines, New Idea. Since then she has won several awards for her stories which have also been published in anthologies. Brigid still lives in the state of Victoria but is now in the capital city of Melbourne where her life is fertile with friends. Brigid George is the pseudonym of JB Rowley - author of Whisper My Secret, Mother of Ten and the children’s series Trapped in Gondwana. Why Brigid George? Brigid because that was what JB’s father called her. George because that was his first name.

By Brenda Telford Sean O’Kelly had only been in Australia for the past three months, out from Ireland, and after working in Sydney for some of that time, decided to travel south into Victoria. The small town of Murloo took his eye and as he relaxed over a cappuccino, he read the local paper, the Claigan Clarion which was published in Claigan, a scant ten kilometres from Murloo. His browsing took him to the story of a young woman, Gabrielle Peters, who had been murdered right here in the town twelve months previously, and her murderer had never been found. His introduction to a startling redhead by the name of Dusty Kent was set to change the course of his life; Dusty was an investigative journalist and bestselling author who had been requested by Gabby’s parents to write a book about Gabby’s life, and in so doing, hopefully unearth her killer. Irene and Hans, and Gabby’s sister Lisa were still deeply grieving, and desperately hoped Dusty could help them – after all, she had done it before. When Dusty hired Sean as her assistant – she was going to utilise his IT skills – Sean was very happy to have a job, and with the delectable Dusty as his boss, he felt he couldn’t go wrong. As Dusty began her investigation, she started by questioning everyone who had been close to Gabby – Heath, Gabby’s fiancé; Lisa, her sister; Bec, her best friend; and many others. But it was at the BBQ which Irene and Hans held to introduce Dusty and Sean to everyone, asking them to help out in every way they could which made Dusty realize there were those who had secrets to hide. Would she be able to find Gabby’s killer when the police hadn’t been able to? And would she be able to block out her own pain to focus on the investigation and subsequent book?A wonderful cosy mystery, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Aussie author Brigid George, with her debut novel, has a winner in my opinion. I’ll definitely be watching out for more from this author. Highly recommended.

This is beautiful stretch of landscape with wetlands, estuaries, surf beaches and not too far inland - tall eucalypt forests. This is one of my favourite places in the world, so I was on the hook from the beginning. Against this background, in a small town peopled with all kinds of Australian characters, the initial murder takes place. I enjoy the occasional mystery and this one had me on my toes. The clever jumps between chapters made it hard to put down, and I worked out just enough of the puzzle to feel clever, however in the end I was outwitted by the twists and turns in the plot. The characters are clearly defined and easy to remember as they weave in and out of the story. The prose is crisp and the narrative well paced. A terrific beginning to a new Australian series; I’m looking forward to the next Dusty Kent mystery.

Life will be better for him after he concludes his unfinished business with the Cherokee family and their protectors. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Are You Ready? By michelsj Unsustainable is Jed O'Dea's third book and it is a must read. It isn't necessary to read his books in order but to understand the context and evolution of the main characters; I suggest that one needs to read the author's earlier works before the release of the next book. The author has perfected his story-telling style using current unsustainable human activities and climatological consequences as the foundation for an engrossing tale of a future marked by complex conspiracies and dark intrigue. The mix of recent political decisions made (and not made) in the interest of environmental sustainability and social welfare serve as the foundation for the author's suggestion that society's actions today are unsustainable and will have consequences in the future. This fanciful view of the future adds several unexpected twists for the reader. Unsustainable will grab the reader's attention in the first 10 pages and take one along for a ride that forces the reader to deal with both the mystery but also to delve into the darker consequences of modern social activism.

Grade A...intelligent, clever, fast paced, believable characters, and a dog that even non-dog lovers would want to have around. The plot lines and action in this book are almost "unsustainable." The story just keeps building and building, spiraling almost out of control ...but ultimately comes to a delightful conclusion. Can't wait to read in O'Dea's next book (there better be one) about what Star's dad has in mind for her. Maybe my neighbor down the street has an idea - will have to visit. The story's relevancy to today's world almost makes reading this book like reading tomorrow's newspaper...and making one wish that some of what is portrayed would come true and be reported in tomorrow's newspaper.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is another great novel from Jed O'Dea 's Tucker Cherokee series By sonja m day This is another great novel from Jed O'Dea 's Tucker Cherokee series. This complex, political drama is a fast moving page turner. It is a great read for anyone who enjoys an adrenaline-fueled military novel with unexpected twist and turns along the way. Our nation has, and will always have enemies that want to humble and humiliate us; this novel is about how our enemies could destroy us from within by exploiting our weaknesses. While exploring the consequences of our current economic and foreign policy, the author also weaves in just the right amount of romance, humor and well thought out characters that any reader would enjoy. I strongly recommend this book.
