An MWA Grand Master tells it straight: Fredric Brown: “When I read Murder Can Be Fun, I had a bottle of bourbon on the table and every time Brown’s hero took a drink, I had a snort myself. This is a hazardous undertaking when in the company of Brown’s characters, and, I’ve been given to understand, would have been just as dangerous around the author himself. By the time the book was finished, so was I.” Raymond Chandler: “You have to wonder how he got it so right. He spent a lot of time in the house—working, reading, writing letters. He saw to his wife, who required a lot of attention in her later years. And when he did get out, you wouldn’t find him walking the mean streets. La Jolla, it must be noted, was never much for mean streets.” Evan Hunter: “In his mid-seventies, after a couple of heart attacks, an aneurysm, and a siege of cancer that had led to the removal of his larynx, Evan wrote Alice in Jeopardy. And went to work right away on Becca in Jeopardy, with every intention of working his way through the alphabet. Don’t you love it? Here’s a man with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, and he’s perfectly comfortable launching a twenty-six book series.” Donald E. Westlake’s Memory: “Here’s the point: Don’s manuscript arrived, and we had dinner and put the kid to bed, and I started reading. And my wife went to bed, and I stayed up reading, and after a while I forgot I was having a heart attack, and just kept reading until I finished the book around dawn. And somewhere along the way I became aware that my friend Don, who’d written a couple of mysteries and some science fiction and his fair share of soft-core erotica, had just produced a great novel.” Charles Willeford: “Can a self-diagnosed sociopath be at the same time an intensely moral person? Can one be a sociopath, virtually unaware of socially prescribed morality, and yet be consumed with the desire to do the right thing? That strikes me as a spot-on description of just about every character Willeford ever wrote. How could he come up with characters like that? My God, how could he help it?” An MWA Grand Master and a multiple winner of the Edgar, Shamus, and Maltese Falcon awards, Lawrence Block’s reflections and observations come from over a half century as a writer of bestselling crime fiction. Several of his novels have been filmed, most recently A Walk Among the Tombstones, starring Liam Neeson. While he’s best known for his novels and short fiction, along with his books on the craft of writing, that's not all he’s written. THE CRIME OF OUR LIVES collects his observations and personal reminiscences of the crime fiction field and some of its leading practitioners. He has a lot to say, and he says it here in convincing and entertaining fashion.

The Crime of Our Lives, by Lawrence Block

About the Author Lawrence Block has been writing award-winning mystery and suspense fiction for half a century. His most recent novels are THE BURGLAR WHO COUNTED THE SPOONS, featuring Bernie Rhodenbarr; HIT ME, featuring philatelist and assassin Keller; and A DROP OF THE HARD STUFF, featuring Matthew Scudder, brilliantly embodied by Liam Neeson in the new film, A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. Several of his other books have also been filmed, although not terribly well. He's well known for his books for writers, including the classic TELLING LIES FOR FUN & PROFIT, and THE LIAR'S BIBLE. In addition to prose works, he has written episodic television (TILT!) and the Wong Kar-wai film, MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS. He is a modest and humble fellow, although you would never guess as much from this biographical note.

By otherdeb Note: This is reposted from my blog, at NOT JUST ANOTHER GROUCHY GRAMMARIAN.There's only one problem with opening a new non-fiction book by Lawrence Block: Your reading list explodes logarithmically. His newest collection of introductions, eulogies, and other appreciations, The Crime of Our Lives, is no exception. In addition to finding authors I already knew of and enjoyed, like Robert B. Parker and Donald E. Westlake, there were a whole bunch whose work I had never heard of, and another bunch of writers who I dimly remember from school -- all presented so engagingly that I now have a new list of authors to pursue, along with a batch of notes on their various pseudonyms and notable pieces, so I don't miss anything. When I mentioned this to my ex -- also a Lawrence Block fan -- he noted "you don't have to read every author he recommends." "Maybe so," I responded, "but he makes them all sound so engaging."And that is the truth of Block's writing. Fiction or non-fiction, gentleman thief, assassin, adventurer, ex-cop, running essays, stamp collecting, writing -- Block's work is engaging. I have never read a Block book or story that didn't feel like I was settling in with a good friend for a catch-up session. In The Crime of Our Lives, he gives overviews of the work of sixteen writers -- peppered with anecdotes about them, about his own life and writing, and about writing and the mystery/crime genres in general. One caveat which Block notes in the beginning, is that he has restricted the subjects of the book to deceased American writers, primarily of the "hard-boiled" variety of fiction, and the list has no women on it. He does note that the last is because Christie and Sayers are British while the female American writers he would include are still living. His reasoning is that he does not wish to assemble a list of favorites and upset friends by their exclusion. In his words: "I have mentioned how generous and amiable mystery writers are, how much I enjoy their company, how well we all get along. If you think I am going to change all that by assembling a list of favorites and leaving some of them off it, you’re out of your mind."*Among the writers Block covers in this volume: Anthony Boucher, Frederic Brown, Raymond Chandler, Stanley Ellin, Erle Stanley Gardner, Dashiell Hammett, John D. MacDonald, Robert B. Parker, Ellery Queen, Rex Stout, and Donald E. Westlake. After reading Block's overviews, my first instinct was to go to the Brooklyn Public Library website, find all the books by each writer and start putting them on hold, one writer at a time.If you are a fan of mysteries, crime stories, noir, or all three, this is an interesting, engaging overview of some of the author's favorite writers, who happen to be among the best in their fields. I highly recommend this book to you. In fact, I recommend this book even if you aren't a fan of the genre. You might just well become a fan after reading it.*Block, Lawrence (2015-03-26). A must-have collection of essays, introductions, and essays By Craig At age 77, Lawrence Block continues to churn out top-notch new novels (there will be a new one published next month from Hard Case Crime, in fact). He belongs to a small elite group of older writers whose legacy and popularity will almost certainly outlive him. Perhaps this is why over the last few years he has also busied himself republishing old pseudonymous works and collecting previously forgotten pieces—early short stories, essays, magazine articles, etc.—into new books. Or maybe he just wants to earn more money. Either way, this is good thing for his fans, because this stuff is very interesting. Here Block gives us an easy-to-read collection of book introductions, freelance articles, and his “Murders on Memory Lane” column from Mystery Scene magazine. All of these pieces are centered on famous crime authors and their novels. Block is always imminently readable, his style sort of reminds me of a rambling conversation with an eccentric uncle. He is profusely gracious and complimentary toward living writers, but he dishes the dirt on dead ones. For example, he tells an anecdote of Robert Ludlum throwing a tantrum when Robin Cook got a bigger advance than he did. There is a story of Evan Hunter a.k.a. Ed McBain writing sex novels under a pseudonym in order to keep a mistress on the side. There is even a funny anecdote concerning Lucille Ball’s rather demanding sexual proclivities. The highlight was probably the essay on Scott Meredith, the now-infamous literary editor/agent who ran mail-order scams and collected unethical commissions on every story he bought. The analysis of the works of Robert Parker and Mickey Spillane were insightful and perhaps brutally honest. Charles Wileford sounds like the literary world’s most good-hearted psychopath. As you might expect in a collection of this format, some observations show up more than once. There is also some overlap with stories already told in Block’s monthly Writer’s Digest columns, which were previously collected in a quartet of books-- Telling Lies for Fun & Profit, Spider Spin Me a Web, Liar’s Bible, and Liar’s Companion.Still, this is rare, fun stuff if you are a fan of the genre. Some of my favorite quotes are listed below:Fredric Brown: “When I read Murder Can Be Fun, I had a bottle of bourbon on the table and every time Brown’s hero took a drink, I had a snort myself. This is a hazardous undertaking when in the company of Brown’s characters… By the time the book was finished, so was I.”Ross Macdonald: “It is one of the singular properties of his fiction that ten minutes after you have turned the last page, every detail of the plot vanishes forever from your mind.”Jim Thompson: “He is surely an important writer and very much worth reading, but it helps to keep it in mind that the stuff ain’t Shakespeare.”Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe: “Throughout, he alienates powerful people with his trademark wisecracks for no apparent reason, turns down fees whenever they’re offered to him, and goes through abrupt mood swings that make you wonder if he shouldn’t be on lithium.”Donald E. Westlake’s Memory: “Don’s manuscript arrived, and we had dinner and put the kid to bed, and I started reading. And my wife went to bed, and I stayed up reading, and after a while I forgot I was having a heart attack, and just kept reading until I finished the book around dawn. And somewhere along the way I became aware that my friend Don… had just produced a great novel.”Dashiel Hammett: “[He] took murder out of the Venetian vase and dropped it into the alley; he gave murder back to the kind of people who commit it for a reason…. He wrote scenes that seemed never to have been written before.”On himself: “I don’t know that I had all that much interest in making a lot of money, not in my idealistic youth. I was more interested, I seem to recall, in making my parents proud of me, and in impressing girls and maybe, God willing, actually getting laid. But I certainly wanted to be able to support myself by writing, if only to avoid having to do anything else.”

Because the man was nice enough to send me a review copy, and who am I to say "no" in the face of such graciousness? ("You're no-one, regardless of getting a free copy," the insecure writer at the back of my brain says. Let's ignore him for the moment, shall we?)Look, here's the thing. If you're already a Larry Block fan, you don't need some hack like me telling you to read this collection of introductions and essays and columns. You know the man's got some insight into the crime field gleaned from a nice long career. You already know, I'm sure, that he prefers only to write retrospectives about friends who have already died, that he's honest (sometimes brutally) about what he likes and doesn't like, that he's fond of variations of the phrase "he never wrote a bad sentence, a klunky phrase, a weak book" in regards to certain favorite authors. You already know if you appreciate his self-effacing way of writing introductions like he's got nothing new to say about the stuff he's introducing. You already know if you enjoy or get annoyed by the way he re-tells certain stories every chance he gets. (On that last, I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing how Block came to work for the Scott Meredith Agency, or how he met Donald Westlake; each telling has a slightly different flavor without ever changing the actual facts.)In fact, if you're already a Larry Block fan, you've already figured out what I'm doing with this review. Good on ya for that. And if you're not already a Larry Block fan, well ... I'm not going to tell you to start with this collection, because really, you should be out there reading his fiction: the cozy crime capers of Bernie Rhodenbarr, the noir darkness of Matthew Scudder, the plethora of short stories. Personally, I'd make sure to check out Killing Castro, reissued a few years back by Hard Case Crime, a great thriller that is also a bit of alternate history, which technically also makes Block a science fiction writer... but I digress. Read some of Block's fiction first, then come back to this collection of non-fiction about his friends and influences. It's a great batch of stuff, really: reminiscences about his friendships and professional relationships with Donald Westlake, Evan Hunter, and others. Several columns worth of "what it was like to learn how not to write bad stuff while working for Scott Meredith." Some funny pieces about (not) winning an Edgar. Tributes to Poe, Chandler, Hammett, Spillane, and some less-obvious and long-out-of-print pulp and paperback original authors. (My "scour used bookstores for these authors" list got a bit longer while reading this collection...)But, like I said: if you're a Block fan, you don't need me to tell you this. And if you're not, I've rambled on long enough. Go buy the book already. Block self-published it in affordable ebook format just for that purpose. So why would you want to let him down by not reading it?

Charlie Davies lacks, well, skills. Hand-eye coordination. Life skills. Doing her taxes, transferable work skills, anger management – you get the picture. So when somehow she manages to trick the owner of a security company into giving her a job, she’s rather pleased. That is, until she starts to think that maybe she’s the one who’s been tricked… Then there’s her former high-school nemesis, James McKenzie, accused of his uncle’s murder, who jokingly offers Charlie twenty thousand dollars and a house to clear his name. Charlie, who (like one of life’s true winners) still lives with her parents, takes him up on the deal. What’s the worst that could happen, right? (Oh yes, she actually thought that.) Unfortunately, that means McKenzie keeps hanging around, annoying her, and sometimes, even worse, being nice. The audacity of this guy. Things start to heat up a little for Charlie. Not in that way. (But kind of in that way.) And what if, after all this, McKenzie turns out to be guilty? What if she doesn’t get paid? Charlie might actually go insane. Or, you know, end up dead. Either way, what a ride, right?

Hilarious mystery novel, best $3 on a book I've ever spent By Ktchaw Buried under the layers of dry wit and the ridiculously embarrassing blunders of Charlie Davies, is a pretty damn solid murder mystery. While the book starts off with a larger focus on the characters of Gerongate, there's more than enough substance to keep you going until the meat of Charlies murder investigation truly gets going.Charlie Davies for some reason reminds me of a small(er) town, Australian Veronica Mars (except a bit more uncoordinated). Its an interesting take on the Private Investigator mystery; the character is dropped into a murder investigation pretty much for the sole purpose of winning a bet against her old nemesis from high-school, who also happens to be the lead suspect in the murder. She gets a job at a private security firm as a receptionist almost by accident a couple of days after quitting her job as a supermarket checkout chick in a pretty spectacular fashion and everything kind of rolls from there. None of the plot or characters seem contrived or out of place (which is a refreshing change given the class of character you see in some mystery novels), and I didn't quite guess who the murderer was before the resolution. There are some great, off-beat characters here that you don't normally find in this kind of book (a couple of which are probably deserving of their own standalone novel) and even without the murder investigation to keep the plot moving, I think I could've read a whole book about Charlie and the people in her life. Its the type of novel I breezed through in one sitting and had a great time doing so. Can't wait to see what else is coming from Clare Kauter!

The main character instantly grabs your attention with her personality and her troubles. Charlie Davies in one woman who lives with her parents and has no skills at all. Then suddenly her life takes a huge turn down an unthinkable path. Charlie isn’t aware of just how bad her new situation is until she learns that she was the one tricked and not the other way around. James McKenzie offers a job to Charlie which gives her twenty thousand dollars and a house. Everyone including Charlie would jump at the opportunity. And she did. The job though is to help clear James McKenzie’s name. But what if he is a murderer after all? Where does that leave Charlie? And what happens to her if she doesn’t get paid? Will her former high school nemesis James McKenzie be guilty or not? And will things heat up between them as Charlie goes about her job to clear his name?Clare Kauter’s first novel is out of this world. It’s realistic, believable, and funny. An enchanting tale of how one very ordinary woman goes about solving a mystery. I loved reading this story and found it very compelling. I can definitely see Clare Kauter’s potential and talent as the words come to life as the story unfolds deeper into the mysterious and suspenseful plot. I would recommend this novel to every reader. And I look forward to reading more of Clare Kauter’s work in the future. Definitely one novel that readers should pick up and read. Overall, I rate it a five out of five stars.

Delightful unpredictable mystery By CCSings Charlie is a young adult, actually a still teenager, who tells her story in a light conversational tone, sprinkled with a healthy dose of dry humor. The kind that makes you laugh out loud. An unplanned job change, a local murder, and a bet with an old friend – who happens to be the prime suspect – make for an interesting and unpredictable chain of events as Charlie becomes more and more involved in trying to discover who killed the town millionaire. In the end, when everything came together, I was genuinely surprised to find out who the true culprit was. All in all, an enjoyable read.Disclosure: I received a review copy from the author; this did not affect my review.

Gorgeous Animal Designs at Night with Black backgrounds By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:fdf7e479f0f9069ca012064b6396191f]]This is my second book by Lindsey Boylan where the backgrounds are pre-filled in with flat mat black and the design stretches over the entire page from side to side. I really love the way that my coloring “pops” off the page with this style. I have found that my pastel and neon colors really show up in a whole new way. There are 31 designs in the coloring book and they are all quite imaginative. The artist has filled in the animals with lovely flowers and motifs to making coloring them even more fun. I am a huge fan of animal scenes and having them with the black background makes this a new and unique book in my coloring collection. There are many animals in the book, including a gorgeous howling wolf, a rabbit, some mice, and even an owl. The animals are set in an imaginative forest with lots of great plants and flowers to color.Creative Haven books are always a good quality paper and my pencils and gel pens generally work well with them. My markers almost always bleed through. Not too worry, though, as they only print designs on one side of the page. The backside is left blank. If you don't remove the page from the book to color, you should put a piece of freezer paper, cardstock, chipboard, or even a couple of sheets of good weight paper behind the page as you work so it won't bleed through to the following page. If you do remove the pages, the publishers have provided nicely perforated pages for easy removal.

Most of the animals in Midnight Forest have a special look to their faces--sweet, stealthy, watchful, cuddly, and their surroundings are interesting. This is a great book for those of us entering "A Room of One's Own" for the first time, trying out different pencils, gel pens, markers, etc. The small spaces are not too small and the larger areas are not too big. Thus, you can learn what you want from other coloring books (I already have eight--many from Creative Haven--because I like diversity.) One day I'm in a dark, beautiful jungle and the next diving in the ocean. If you have not tried these black background books, you are missing a fun experience. Don't forget to give it sparkle over the colored pencil work. After all, there's a full moon to catch the colors.

When her body is found backstage, fatally poisoned by a cupcake she baked herself, rumors turn to suicide. But Elli Lisbon, director of the Ballantyne and coordinator of the ballet, smells something rotten amidst the sugar and spice.

As Elli applies her PI-in-training skills on the troupe of suspects, she discovers an eccentric herbalist, a temperamental chef, a stalking choreographer, and a bevy of backstage secrets. Between her off-the-record investigation, duty as director, and highly-charged love life, she finds herself caught in a dance to stay one pirouette ahead of a half-baked killer.

Swan Dive (An Elliott Lisbon Mystery Book 3), by Kendel Lynn

About the Author

Kendel Lynn is a Southern California native who now parks her flip-flops in Dallas, Texas. She read her first Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators at the age of seven and has loved mysteries ever since. Her debut novel, Board Stiff, was an Agatha Award nominee for Best First Novel. It features Elliott Lisbon, a mostly amateur sleuth who has a slight aversion to all things germy and is only five thousand hours away from getting her PI license. Along with writing and reading, Kendel spends her time editing, designing, and figuring out ways to avoid the gym but still eat cupcakes for dinner.

However, when the young woman playing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy is found dead in her dressing room during the Ballantyne’s production of ‘The Nutcracker’, Elli puts on her PI-in-training hat and begins looking into her death. The police believe the victim accidentally ingested poison but that reason doesn’t sit well with Elli. When Elli realizes the young woman had a connection to Mr. & Mrs. Ballantyne, she relentlessly pursues leads—leads that unfortunately point to murder.I really like this series. Swan Dive is the third book starring Elli Lisbon, a smart and funny protagonist who has a strong aversion to germs. Every time she takes out the bottle of hand sanitizer, I start to laugh. I can so relate. I keep bottles in my car and purses, too. LOL! Elli is a very likable lead character, and she is quite adept at juggling her professional responsibilities. Her PI skills, especially her questioning skills, are getting stronger—much to the dismay of the two men in her life. The secondary characters are an interesting bunch. I especially love her interactions with her colleague, Tod, and her best friend, Sid.Swan Dive is a great read. It boasts likable characters, a great setting, believable dialogue, and a well-written mystery with enough suspects to keep you guessing. I had trouble solving this one, and even after I figured out the identity of the killer (very late in the book, I should add), I never would have guessed the reason. Well done, Ms. Lynn! I’m looking forward to more adventures with Elli. I hope Book 4 is in the works. Happy reading!

I'm always excited when I see another Elliott Lisbon book available for me to read and review. This was my third in the series and I desperately await for the next.Elliott Lisbon is in charge of running the Ballantyne foundation and it sounds like a pretty nice job. She is taking PI courses to help out the Ballantyne's and the members of the board, who it seems one of them or someone close to them is always getting into some kind of trouble. And then there two "special" men in her life. One is the local headmaster and one is the chief of police who never keeps her completely in the loop on the cases they are working. Even though she is usually the one that actually solves them. The location, off the Atlantic coast and typically warm, and the quirky characters that keep showing up really help to make this a delightful and entertaining read. I would just like to hang out with this character and knock back a few margaritas! Thanks Henery Press and Net Galley for providing me this free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

I devoured this cleverly and well-written humorous drama that kept me both entertained and engaged (as evidence of my private comments to the author) from beginning to an ending that put a smile on my face. With great success, the author teased me with a bevy of suspects, only to make those twisty turns that when it was all said and done, all I could say was “Bravo on a job well done.” Elli is a great heroine for this story and I love her idiosyncrasies which make her more human and lovable at the same time. Elli is surrounded by an eclectic supporting cast from her BFF Sid, to Matty to Carla, to her Ballantyne cohorts and to that handsome devil himself, Nick Ransom. The witty banter between the characters added to the dynamics of this wonderfully delightful and charming read. This is the best one yet in a series which continues to get better and better with each book published and I can’t wait for Elli to knock another 1,000 hours off her PI training in her next adventures.

The isolated and rural farming county of Lincolnshire, England is a place you come from - not move to. Except for Penny May. She’s tired of the stress of her job in London, and it’s time for an early retirement. In an effort to reclaim the exuberance of youth that she once had, she gets a funky hair style, a classic motorcycle - and a dog with “issues”. Dog ownership is harder than she expected, but she won’t give up. To avoid postmen, people in hats, people with bags and all the other dogs in the world, she has to walk in lonely places at lonely times … it’s almost inevitable that she stumbles across a dead body, really. It might not be the most conventional way of settling into a new community, but the locals open up to her, and soon she’s involved in the investigation. But her need for justice brings her into conflict with Drew, the local blacksmith who’s been helping her with dog training, and Cath Pritchard, the detective constable. Is her need for friendship stronger than her need to find the killer? And will she ever be able to walk her dog in daylight? This is a clean read suitable for all; it’s a standalone novel with no cliffhanger, and the mystery is fair-play and solved. “Some Very English Murders” can be enjoyed in any order but you may prefer to follow them chronologically. This is Book One. Book Two, Small Town Secrets, is out now: http://amzn.to/1ys54BJ

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For mystery lovers and dog lovers. Loved it By Helen C. Page Mystery lovers and dog lovers will love thisWhat a delightful find. This well-written, smart, and funny mystery takes place in the countryside north of London when Penny May takes an early retirement from producing TV shows and buys a cottage in a picturesque village for some stress relief with a rescue Rottweiler for company. Kali, the dog, has a will of her own and sniffs out more than Penny bargained for on one of their early walks. Penny finds herself pulled into small town life when she embarks on some amateur sleuthing and meets the town’s local characters, who have suspicions of their own about the newcomer. It kept me guessing to the end, with a touch of incipient romance to spice things up one hopes in future books. This may be one of my favorite cozy reads in recent years. Thumbs up.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some very well described characters some less so. By P. A. Woodburn I thought the most interesting character in the book was Kali. As the owner of a rescue St Bernard with the same problem but an extra 80 lbs weight I knew the writer had had close experience with such a dog in real life. She carefully describes the constant worry, guilt and fear that this is an insoluble problem that may result in a huge lawsuit if vigilance is dropped for one second.. The novel did make me vow to retry the treat cure and maybe experiment with leashes. Apart from the visit when Francine stayed overnight all of the other visits with people seemed very brief I would like to see the writer lengthen visits with other characters.Penny adapted to her change of venue too fast. I'm sure there are some things about London that would be missed. The grammar was fine except there were several places where the sentence had a strange phrase, but I didn't know if the phrase was okay for the country or really a grammar error. There weren't very many. Some of the confrontations that Penny had with 'suspects' were downright unbelievable for any sane person. The novel kept me entertained for several hours and I would consider purchasing another.

In this gripping legal thriller by “the female John Grisham” (The Providence Journal), sex-crimes prosecutor Anna Curtis must stop a vicious street gang before it destroys more lives—and her own family. On the very night she gets engaged to the man she loves, Assistant US Attorney Anna Curtis’s professional life takes a shocking turn that threatens everything she holds dear. A few miles away from where she’s enjoying her romantic dinner, two separate groups are gearing up to raid a brothel. A vicious killer known as Diablo—the Devil—leads one group. A few minutes later, Anna’s own investigative team heads in to search the brothel, as part of an ongoing fight against human trafficking in DC. Both groups are caught off guard, with deadly results. As Anna investigates the bloody face-off, the boundaries between her work and home life begin to blur when she discovers a web of long-buried secrets and official lies that lead straight to her doorstep. And everything Anna counted on—the happiness she seemed so close to securing—comes into question as Diablo moves in for yet another kill. Allison Leotta draws on her experience as a DC sex-crimes prosecutor to take you into the back rooms of the US Attorney’s Office, the hidden world of the Witness Protection Program, and the secret rituals of one of America’s most dangerous gangs. Universally praised by bestselling authors from Catherine Coulter and George Pelecanos to Lisa Scottoline and David Baldacci, Leotta weaves fact and fiction to create her best novel yet.

Amazon.com Review Guest Review of Speak of the Devil

By Catherine Coulter

Catherine Coulter is the author of the New York Times best-selling FBI thrillers The Cove, The Maze, The Target, The Edge, Riptide, Hemlock Bay, Eleventh Hour, Blindside, Blowout, Point Blank, Double Take, Tailspin, Knockout, Whiplash, Split Second, Backfire, and Bombshell. She lives in Northern California.

If you relish hard-hitting, take-no-prisoner cops and a sharp committed prosecutor who doesn’t hesitate to face down evil, Speak of the Devil by Allison Leotta is for you. The Devil (Diablo) is the big kahuna in the MS-13 gang in Washington, D.C. Leotta paints him with terrifying clarity. He’s cruel, malevolent, power-mad, and you see him, feel him, and know that to him brutality and torture are the pleasures of his life.

Leotta handles the infamous MS-13 gang in an unexpected way. Rather than keeping them faceless, showing only their cruelty and violence, she takes the reader inside to see the “home boys”—most of the gang members are teenagers. It's chilling and deftly done.

As if prosecutor Anna Curtis doesn't have enough on her plate, she's also engaged to a man whose cop wife was “greenlighted” (a sanctioned hit) by the MS-13, and murdered some years before. He is also her boss in the U.S. Attorney's Office. Anna is up to her eyebrows dealing with the gang. I'll tell you, as you watch both Diablo and one of his minions, “Psycho,” in action, you really want Anna to bring them down.

As for the USAO—the undercurrents, the clashing personalities, the rivalries, all are painted with understanding and honesty by a talented writer who was herself in the middle of the fray for a number of years. She expertly lays out how and why the legal system works in the USAO in Washington, D.C. You see all the tangles, the losses, the triumphs of a group of people who just don't stop.

What I liked particularly were Leotta’s evocative descriptions of the courtrooms, the endless procedures, the waiting—the interminable waiting—and the calm, almost deadening efficiency of the judges.

When I finished Speak of the Devil I knew I'd learned and enjoyed and was pleased to have read such an excellent book.

From Booklist D.C. sex-crimes prosecutor Anna Curtis is enjoying the glow of her recent engagement and wondering if she can succeed as the stepmother of a six-year-old daughter when she gets called to investigate a brutal crime. A vicious group of thugs led by a man known as Diablo attacks a brothel. Anna soon learns that they are a street gang called MS-13, one of the worst street gangs in the country. As she searches for clues, she discovers long-buried secrets and official cover-ups. Leotta (Law of Attraction, 2010) was a federal sex-crimes prosecutor, so she knows her subject all too well. 21 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Great crime novel By K. Blaine I write here as one who has never read a book by Allison Leotta, but "Speak of the Devil" has made me want to read everything she has written. The main character in "Speak of the Devil" is Anna Curtis, a sex crimes prosecutor in Washington DC, who has just become engaged to Jack Bailey, chief of the DC homicide unit. Jack has a six-year-old daughter, Olivia, and his late wife, Nina Flores, had been killed four years earlier by one of the street gangs of Washington DC. Most investigators believe that that the crime was committed by MS-13, a notoriously violent and ruthless DC gang. The leader of this gang is Diablo, accurately named "the Devil." Diablo's skin is completely covered in tattooed hieroglyphs. His nose is two sunken holes; he has long black hair and two fleshy horns protruding from his forehead. Indeed, he is aptly named.Diablo and his gang appear throughout the book as Anna Curtis and Jack Flores attempt to solve various gruesome crimes occurring in the DC area. There are many twists and turns, and a huge red herring that comes as a total surprise to the reader in the last third of the book. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes true-life crime fiction. The author's experience as a sex-crimes prosecutor for 12 years in Washington DC is evident on every page, and she is a superb writer. If I could give the book more than five stars, I would. Highly recommended.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Some of the best character writing I have read By R. Kyle There's a lot already said about this novel. I will honestly say it's worth 5 stars for quite a lot of reasons, but the reason I am choosing to highlight in this review is the skillful hard-hitting drawing of her characters. It's easy to depict your main character. Writers want the reader to know them and preferably to like them since many in this genre want to write sequels.Allison Leotta goes where few authors are brave enough to tread. She shows you her bad guys--in this case, a DC-based gang of teenage boys led by Diablo, who are as bad as it gets. She doesn't just hide the bad behind a curtain, she lets you see these dudes and it's chilling.I remember working for Probation and Parole with an officer who came from DC and what he said about crime there would chill your blood on a summer day. This novel reads like how he described his experience. The sketches of these gang members are so vivid and strong you could use them for a mug shot. Writers, for certain, should read this book. It will teach you about writing memorable story people.Rebecca Kyle, January 2014

15 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Unnecessarily detailed graphic violence By Never pay retail OK, so I watch Criminal Minds on TV and I've read plenty of crime novels, but I was almost too sickened by the first part of this book to continue to the end. Speak of the Devil tells the story of a ruthless gang and the prosecutor trying to bring them to justice. Obviously there is going to be violence-that's what gangs do. However I think it could have been alluded to without going into gruesome detail, especially when it came to what was done to the women. I think you can paint a more chilling picture with an artistically wielded brush than by throwing a gallon of red paint. It was very difficult to read. If you have any personal experience with abuse or gang violence, you shouldn't even consider reading this book. If you have a strong stomach and make it through the first half, the story does get interesting enough to be worth finishing, but overall, it would not be a book I'd recommend to a friend.

The characters are well developed and each chapter tells their individual stories which begin to converge as the reader goes deeper . I had never read a financial thriller before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the author demonstrates a solid understanding of the financial industry while still delivering a plot that does not get overly cerebral and keeps the reader intrigued and entertained. There are a lot of plot twists in this story, so don't think that you've got it all figured out until you read it to the end! Can't wait to see what Mark Petry comes up with next! Highly recommended!

Much to my surprise, I loved it! It caught me by surprise several times. It has some unexpected events that still leave a stunned impression on me when I think about them. By Steven Jager I enjoyed the book a lot -- I think it is a great and fun read.... notwithstanding the implausibility of parts of the storyline and characters, my attention was rapt the whole way through with twists that I did not always see coming...I hope that the author, Mark Petry, will continue the series as there are certainly some loose ends that I would love to see tied up!

By Kayla I am an English major and Linguistic minor with a horrible secret--not only do I hate grammar, I'm simply not good at it. I probably hate it BECAUSE I'm not good at it, but we'll revisit that later. I love to write, and like all writers I have a dream, which is to be published one day, to see my book in print and to dance around in circles in my living room in thanks to the literature gods...Ahem.Anyway, writing is one thing, but the process of actually editing things and making them presentable to the rest of the human race is another thing entirely. Editors are costly, and when you're on an extremely limited income as I am, sometimes certain venues just aren't an option. Ashlyn is an independent author, and I've read a few of her fiction pieces (which are fabulous!) so when I heard about this book, I was naturally intrigued to see what it had to offer. I don't usually review things on here too often, but I wanted to put in a good word for this gem.Self-Editing on a Penny was a fun read. Really. It was fun. Ashlyn takes the topic of editing and adds her own special voice, which means that even while she's giving you some valuable information, you're giggling as you read along. The information is presented in a way that, unlike other style guides, won't leave you sobbing in confusion or brain-dead from grammar-related terminology dumps. Her examples are inventive but easy to understand. When I started reading the book, I thought it would take me a lot longer to get through it--but it took me less than two days. The book offers suggestions to writers on how to tackle the editing process and covers several simple and commonly misused grammar and style points. It also recommends the use of a more comprehensive guide, and explains the benefits of doing some editing of your own, the benefits of hiring a more professional editor, the benefits of actually allowing people outside of your family to take a gander at your drafts, and the benefits of taking a hack-saw to said draft when need be, and why it's important to be objective through the process. I laughed the whole way through, but I also finished the book and found that I had learned quite a few things that I hadn't considered before. I'll be reading it several times and snagging myself a paper copy for easier reference at home when one is available. I feel like this book is going to be a wonderful resource!

A Splash of Cool Water for My Eyes and My Perfectionist-infected Brain By E Faith Mayo This book is an excellent resource for writers who understand the importance of editing either with or without assistance from professional editors. If an indie writer, nothing is more off-putting to readers than an unedited book. Not only do they lose all respect for you as a writer, but also the entire self-publishing industry and that can be devastating to other indie writers. If you cannot afford professional editing, at the very least make sure you avail yourself of good resources such as this one. Even some of the most famous authors are imperfect and we, their readers, excuse a few errors here and there. But we are not there yet, are we? So respect yourself, your hard work, other writers, and the industry. A good story is not necessarily a good read.Personally, I have always loved English and started writing as a young child. My grades were above average to excellent, but I was [and am] never overconfident. I edit/proof/edit/rewrite and then hit the repeat button until my eyes cross and/or my sight blurs. Also, I retained college textbooks for 'easy' reference AND use a myriad of Internet sites. Then I garner enough courage to send my beloved manuscript to a few beta readers. Oh, the fear. The fear.Hmmph! Ashlyn's book was a splash of cool water to my eyes and my perfectionist-infected brain. It also helped me break through a severe case of writer's block because I doubted myself. (More than likely age-related.) But back to Ashlyn. She does not steer writers away from professional editing services contrary to what some may believe. I hired an editor, but not before making use of every bit of guidance I needed in Ashlyn's guide. And my editor has made so few corrections and offered so few suggestions that I'm stunned each time she returns a section to me for review. Get the book for yourself or as a gift! It will only help, not hurt...and best of luck to all of you.

I started reading this yesterday and was amazed with the simplicity of this book. I'm sick of reading helpful resource books that either droll on too much or complicate what was supposed to be a simple explanation. Ashlyn doesn't complicate, she tells it how it is. She tells you what is wrong and what is right and actually uses really good examples for you to follow. This will stay on my laptop and will be my ONLY resource book to refer to when I am editing. The only other book anyone would need in conjunction with Self-Editing on a Penny would be a grammar book but that's it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. her best so far By Eva-Maria Renner Cheryl Payton writes a classic cozy with a sense of humor. This is the third cozy I've read and, I think, her best so far. She never fails to hold my attention with her interesting characters, steady plot, and that unpredictable twist that never fails to deliver. Cheryl Peyton just gets better with each new outing - this was my favorite of the three I've read and I look forward (hopefully) to her next one.

Interesting characters, a great Key West setting, and a compelling story line kept me entertained from cover to cover. The delightful and eccentric book club members perplex Alex as she tries to shepherd them and provide them a successful tour. Fun to watch Alex and Arlie collaborate to solve the crime at hand.

Bizarre plot twists and the amusing interactions among an intriguing cast of characters kept me entertained and engaged from the beginning. Iread it in one sitting and came back to Amazon looking for more like this fromColleen Gleason (there isn't more yet! Write fast, Ms. Gleason). She takes the legend of a lost library that belonged to Ivan the Terrible andties it in with a very modern-day group of ecoterrorists who believe in theGaia Theory--the fact that the earth is one large, complicated organism. Theseecoterrorists live in Siberia and have been trying to get the attention of therest of the world for years, and finally have resorted to taking seriousmeasures.Marina Alexander, who is sort of like Cussler's Dirk Pitt, does cave search andrescues and she flies small planes. She's also an antiquities expert. A littlelarger than life, but, hey, I like that. Plus, she's morethan just a cut-out action adventure hero, because she has personal problemsthat end up being tied into this mess. It's a great book and I highly recommend it. Here's hoping Gleason writes anotherMarina Alexander adventure.

A Heroine for our Times By Claude Forthomme (Nougat) For those who like fast-paced adventure laced with romance and historical mysteries, sprinkled with sci-fi fantastic innovations that threaten our world as we know it, this is the book for you!And Marina, Colleen Gleason's heroine, is a most unusual woman: she is as strong and clever as James Bond, but she is not a spy. She is sexy but not flirtatious: she is only attracted to men who are her equal. She has a brain, she is a universtiy professor with a deep knowledge of history and ancient manuscripts, yet she is physically strong and brave: this is no egghead! And then, she never gives up and never gives in! Her personal integrity, her sense of justice, her deep, unwavering humanitarian impulse - she is always willing to risk her own life to save someone else's - is unrivalled. So, as a reader, you come to admire her and root for her as she battles ruthless eco-terrorists, a bunch of weird, mad Siberians out to destroy our cililization. The stakes are high and Marina is truly a heroine for our Times: someone with strength and gumption to carry out all the battles against every sort of violence and extremism. The very battles we ourselves would like to carry out.But Marina is not perfect, towards the end of this book which hopefully is the start of a long series, you are given a glimpse into a (small?) defect, you are not quite sure what it is...As readers, we can't wait for the next book and get to know more about Marina: she is so human!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. THE BEGINNING OF AN ADVENTURE WORTH READING By Patricia D. I started this series in the middle. Which induced me to go back to the beginning. And I am VERY glad, because this is an adventure story, with a bit of romance, and a lot of suspense. Plus, an enormous amount of imagination, all of which combines to build a story that snapped me right out of reality. The characters were either lovable, admirable, or flat-out evil, depending on the place they had in the story. Marina is a phenomenal young woman, and I am particularly impressed with the fact that she doesn't need a man beside her. Not to say she minds the creatures-just, they have their place. Maybe opening peanut butter jars. Her father, and her FATHER, on the other hand ... let's just say, no wonder she had to get strong! The multiple plots were nicely intertwined, resulting in a weave a lot like a Celtic knot-no end, no beginning, except for the end and beginning. Crossing over, dipping. While there are several plots, each alone nice, as a group they create something no single one (or even, two) of them could.Read this one. Then read "AMAZON ROULETTE, " because you'll be really, really, really glad!!!
