I am now pleased to have a single point of reference for my goal of better writing.Recently, I asked someone I did not know for their critique of one of my short stories. It was not a pretty review, giving me much to contemplate, and motivation to be a better writer. I was not surprised with the review.What I found myself doing, as a writer, was putting ‘talking’ words on paper. After all, I rationalized, I wanted my reader to be at home with my prose; prose being defined (by Google) written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure.With this post, I am asking others not to give in to easy way outs, to write with decreasing value in the written word. Far too many areas of our society are the results of lowered expectations, most noticeably being cursive.As I absorb (and respect) excellent reference tools, as is your book, I know see each word – sentence – paragraph from a structural point of view, not only from my self-centered point of telling someone what I want them to hear. Clearly, if one writes in a word processor like Word, they have basic spelling and grammar checks for minimum help. The next step is the editing process. I could not agree with you more as to letting a piece sit overnight. After all, truly excellent spaghetti sauce improves with age. A suggestion of mine is one I pass along from my father. He taught me to play chess by seeing the board from the opponent’s viewpoint. As this became in my business life I am now applying this to my writing, not in the message or theme but in the structure. To see what I have put to paper from the readers point of view.I also cannot agree with you (and virtually everyone offering council) more, first and foremost is in getting words on paper; simply write, and then write some more and …When it comes to the editing process, I make no claims for any level of talent. I did read a reflection of Sidney Sheldon’s (creator of I Dream of Jeannie and much more). He offered that he edits each piece a minimum of a dozen times. I am still learning how to re-read a piece this many times without falling asleep but that is my goal.I know that I have a long way to go, for good writer status. I hope to make Elmore Leonard proud of me in place of him rolling over in his grave.Again, thanks for your work.

Since my name ends with "s", it gets all kinds of misuse such as Rigg's or Riggs's... I just LOVE it when it's Rigg's as a plural!!Alex (full disclosure: a real-life brother of mine) is clear and direct about writing well. He understands the need to keep it simple and to avoid the big words. Like me, he is a commercial writer and so this book is really about how to get in gear and write well, for purposes of work. Which is, in other words, most of us!You should read this book if you are a reasonably well-educated person who is still just a little confused about grammar and usage. If you're very very good it might go over ground you know well already, and if you're quite illiterate... well, you just won't read it.The odds are that if you're reading this, you qualify. So pick up this book!

By sirio This book is helpful in the true sense of the word: English writing and grammar are simply made clearer for the reader.The text stands alone as a reference which avoids stuffy grammatical punctiliousness, condescending generalizations and the time-honored last retort of the grammarian: you don't get it because you must be stupid.Thank you.
