By Ashanti Khan Without giving too much away, the basic story revolves around the death of a despicable character that puts several people in a desperate situation. “In The Shadow Of Angels” could definitely make a really good movie. It felt like a movie when I read/listened to it. I could easily envision it filmed in multiple styles depending on the director. My personal preference would be the film noir style. I really enjoyed this book by Donnie J. Burgess, enough so to look for more works by him.Also, Neal Arango, who narrates this audio book, does a great job performing this novel. He doesn’t just read the book to us, he really captures the personality of the all the different characters, male and female, with his vocal choices. I think everyone will enjoy his voice and his performance. If you’re looking for your next audio book and you enjoy thrillers, I think “In The Shadow Of Angels” will be a good choice for you.Finally, this audio book was provided by the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of Audio Book Blast.”

Fabulous Story Outstanding Narration By bec/audiothing This is a truly enjoyable story that enthralled me from the very beginning, I just had to listen from beginning to end. The plot is unlike most of the mysteries I read or listen to in that it's not about murder. It's about a most unusual treasure hunt, the clues are provided from beyond the grave, albeit via a reel of film.The setting is an old mansion that wouldn't be out of place in a horror story, full of hidden secrets. There is a faithful butler to attend their every need and a cook who prepares for them meals fit for the fussiest gourmet.The clues they must solve are very cryptic, and the attempts to solve them lead along a convoluted route to some very eerie locations. The story has the feel of an Agatha Christie play and I realised I had no idea of the time period in which the story was set, though I might have missed that bit. The ending is both unexpected and satisfying, I felt I had just listened to a rather wonderful play on the wireless. I highly recommend this intriguing tale.NarratorNarrated by Jake Urry, and what a wonderful job he made of it, his voice conveyed an ominous significance to the words which was just perfect for this book. He maintains a good rhythmn and his voice has a pleasing cadence which helps bring life to story. I had no trouble differentiating between the characters because he bestowed them with distinct voices, he has also mastered the art of conveying the age appropriate voices. Jake also passed my "old lady voice" test, many of us listeners get tired of any female character over 60 being given a high pitched, weak and quavery voice. Darned good job Jake, I'm sure you will do exceedingly well in the audiobook narration business.This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator or publisher in return for an honest review

I only wish it had been longer, with more puzzles to solve and more of those fabulous meals from the talented culinary magician in charge of the kitchen.Lord Willoughby’s son Matthew was required by his father’s will to solve certain puzzles before he could inherit his father’s estate. After more of his father’s instructions were discovered and the search accelerated for clues to solve the riddles, guests at the mansion were waited on hand and foot and treated to the very best meals, snacks and goodies from the wine cellar.The old house was full of dark gloomy corridors, secret doors, walls full of paintings, and a library that seemed endless. The search expanded outside to the surrounding estate, so there was no limit to places where important items could be found. The will imposed a time limit to solve the puzzles, so each deciphered clue involved a race to check it out, which maintained the pace and suspense.The characters were described well and we really got to know the important people in the story. The Kindle edition was well edited and the ending wrapped up details we didn’t even know about! I am happy to recommend this book and look forward to others from this author.

His main character, Tracie Tanner—a CIA black ops agent—is in so deep that no one from the CIA knows she is one of the good guys except the CIA director. Once fired by the spy agency, Tanner has been re-hired to carry out the most dangerous of assignments after an explosion kills off most of the leadership of an American company. She must find out who is responsible and deal with them “by any means possible.”Her job will not be easy. The Omega Connection takes readers from one death-defying scene after another, from a swank Washington D.C. hotel to the streets of Miami, from the Florida coastline to the shores of Cuba, even into the everglades where alligators are the least of Tanner’s worries. This novel promises to keep readers turning pages to see if Tanner will survive the impossible. Look forward to the next Tanner novel—if she survives.

The Night Crew visits dark subjects By Cheryl Stout LTC Sean Drummond has been in the U.S. Army for 17 years, is an Army attorney, and is now on loan to the Office of Special Projects of the CIA. An old acquaintance, civilian attorney Katherine Carlson, wrangles him into being cocounsel on the Al Basari military prison scandal.Five soldiers, three women and two men, have been charged with doing atrocities towards the prisoners. One of the women, an unattractive low mentality soldier, is Drummond's and Carlson's client.This military/political thriller was fast paced and raised some major ethical questions. Drummond, the main protagonist, has his own way of doing things and that's not necessarily by the book.I liked that a good part of the book took place at or near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, an area I am familiar with and admire.Murder, torture, kinkiness, incest - all kinds of hardcore subjects are brought up in this book so be forewarned.THE NIGHT CREW is a hard book to read. It very vividly describes the torture and atrocities against Arab prisoners of war in a vastly overcrowded, understaffed prison.NOTE: I received a free advance copy of this book from Thomas & Mercer via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.

Very Mixed Feelings By Hatter I loved Brian Haig's first two books (Secret Sanction & Mortal Allies), enjoyed the rest of his Sean Drummond books, but never managed to finish any of his non-Drummond books. This book begins as a cross between the first two books (a government cover up of war crimes and a conflict between Drummond and his co-counsel who is more interested in advancing her cause than in protecting her client) and for the first half of the book I kept experiencing an unsatisfactory feeling of deja vue. The book eventually develops its own character, but Drummond is never as snarky in this book as in previous books, and the tension of who done it, never felt as powerful or pressing to me.Sean Drummond is a character who verbalizes disrespect, arrogance, and independence, while his behavior screams Duty, Honor, and Country. I have always enjoyed the characterization of this complicated protagonist, and at the end of his previous books felt as if the good guys won. At the end of this book I felt as if there were no good guys, there were no winners, and the story was simply depressing. That may well be an accurate summation of the political maneuvering which helped produce the prison abuses of the Iraqi war, but it is not entertaining. I read fiction to be entertained, not to be depressed. This book was too short on entertainment, and too long on depressing reminders of what happens when idiots plan a war.

First, the main character is a lawyer acting more as an investigator rather than a lawyer, and although investigation is often part of defense counsel's work, it is notT his or her job to solve the crime, but to represent the client. Second, many many "legal" things are misnamed and misunderstood. As a lawyer, I found this jarring and distracting. Examples: the co-defendants "corroborated" when they got together to plan their defense. Interviews were "interrogatories." "Counsel" was mistaken for "council." Ethical rules were misunderstood and misapplied (nothing prevents defense counsel from interviewing a witness unless that witness is represented by counsel). Ugh. Third, the female co-counsel disappears into nothing other than a relatively inactive, cranky-though-sexy love interest, even though she is initially described as both highly competent and passionate about her work.

I absolutely can not wait to see what else author Simon Jenner has in store for us readers in futures novels. 'Do you want action and suspense? Do you want everyday heroes and demented villains?Do you want violence, heroism and high tech gadgets? THEN LOOK no further, for you will find it all in this box set! Give these books a try if you haven't yet. I can promise you that you won't be let down!*PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR MY PREVIOUS REVIEWS OF THE INDIVIDUAL BOOKS* ORIGINS:I absolutely was blown away by this book. Right from the start I was hooked. This book is gloriously written and delightfully violent. Jenner's writing style vividly thrust me into Ethan's world. I loved turning the page to see what was next. I am a huge fan of Jenner's prose. I won't spoil the story by going into detail, but this book is a great journey into the bloody dark. I can not recommend this book highly enough. Go read it. Now. RELENTLESS:Holy cow! This is one hell of a good book! I have read it twice now! Relentless is book two of what I hope will be a long and adventurous book series. Simon really delivers here with book two and builds upon his outstanding character development. Before continuing; if you haven't read book one yet stop right now and do so, once done get back over here! Book 2 hits hard and heavy and introduces an antagonist I really loved to hate. Simon has a good way of making me feel for his characters. I love that Simon really delivers the action and high tech gadgets in this book. I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I was finished. Reader beware, you stand a very good chance of becoming hooked! This is an outstanding sequel and i highly recommend this book to anyone! 5 stars Simon! INCENDIARY:Book three in the Ethan Justice series is about as awesome as action/suspense novels can get! Simon Jenner really kicked up the action in this book! I was hooked from the first chapter and it was torture anytime I had to put this book down! Incendiary pits private eye, Ethan and sexy girlfriend, Savannah, against a major antagonist! The action scenes. as well as plot twists really keep this book flowing well one chapter to the next. Simon also continues with his amazing character development with his main characters. This book also brings some new dynamic characters, some good guys, but most bad. As I read through these pages it felt like I was reading about real people with real problems and desires etc.The antagonist in this book is one evil guy, but even so Simon's development makes me actually feel for the guy at times.I love the way that Simon is able to paint vivid action scenes and dialog for his characters. His outside the box approach to certain combat scenes and weapons are absolutely amazing! The technology used throughout the story line too all serves to mix into a book thats part James bond part old school crime novel and ALL parts awesome!I can not recommend this book highly enough! It is a damn fine book I would however start with book one before diving into this or the previous sequel however.There isn't much else I can say besides to say " Go read it now!"So, What are you waiting for? Go read this series!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Edge of your seat thrillers By pw reader This is a thrill-a-minute, nail-biting series, to have all three books together is wonderful. Once you meet Ethan and Savannah, you will want to read all of their dangerous undertakings. I look forward to number four!Review of each book in the set -ORIGINSWhat a roller coaster ride! It starts off with a look at the villain (I found the violence here a bit graphic) and never slows down. I loved that the two main characters' real names are Smith and Jones, as well as how they developed into heroes; reluctant heroes at times but heroes nonetheless. The action never stops or becomes boring. Often I would never guess the twists and turns that the story would take. It really kept me reading long after I should have been doing something else! Take Simon Jenner's wonderful writing style and subtle sense of humor added to the excellent plot and character development, you know you have found one great read.RELENTLESSI did not think that the sequel to the Ethan Justice Origins would be better than the first. However Ethan Justice: Relentless is just that, no even better. This one is still a rollercoaster ride but I found it to be more of an emotional one, with me becoming as invested in the outcome as Ethan and Savannah. The development of the relationship of Ethan and Savannah is one of my favorite parts. Of course the dark humor is appreciated too. Getting into the bad guy's head not so much because he is really, really bad and obsessed with getting Savannah. There are disturbing scenes and events that seemed to be inconceivable to me. However Simon Jenner writes so that the villain seem real; with his actions possible, probable and nightmarish scary. I guess that is the reason for the saying "Hell is Hot." For the villain never for Simon. It also makes one thankful Ethan and Savannah made it out alive and together, ready for their next adventure in ridding the world of very, very bad guys. Along with them I hope we learn more of Agent Johnson's story, I'm sure he has one.INCENDIARYEthan Justice - Incendiary by Simon Jenner does not let up on the harrowing adventures that Ethan and Savannah became involved with in the first two books of the series. Instead, it seems to escalate. Now they are in Europe battling Mafia type figures and perversely evil criminals. This time Mr. Jenner has tangled up Ethan’s family in this thriller by having his sister, Rachel, be right in the middle of it. In this series the story always starts with the villain. I like this is that I can gauge just how bad a beating my nerves are going to take before Ethan manages to save the day. This one is nail biting. Partly because I always identify with Savannah and again she ends up in some tight spots. As always it’s never predictable, except I always expect Ethan to come through though not in the normal just-shoot-the-bad-guy.It seems to me Ethan is becoming more James Bond-ish; except remember, it’s James Bond without all the training. I’m now seeing a young Gary Grant and Grace Kelly channeling through Ethan and Savannah. Wish they could make the movie especially since this has hit written all over it – full of action, suspense, dark humor, and heroes that are complex, a little flawed, but endearing.The author provided a copy for an honest review.

Dobler These were recommended to me by another author that I read and after starting the first one, I didn't put them down until I'd finished all of them! I really couldn't figure out where the author was going at the beginning but decided to stay with it.There is a bit more graphic writing than I prefer, but the author did such a great job of actually using those graphic scenes to help explain and foreshadow things that looking back, I can really appreciate it. Very well done character development, plot lines, evil villians, and maybe just a little bit much on the saved in the nick of time stuff. This is pretty good writing!

The pencils are more like a crayon material and difficult to paint such detail drawings. I had to use coloring pencils I bought separately.

The main characters are so well drawn and the plot is so full of twists and turns, you really have no clue who the good guys and bad guys (and that includes the gals) are until the very end. Ripe for a sequel, I hope we see more from debut author Kennison very soon!

Telling the story of a lost pedagogical practice and its wide-ranging effects on two sides of the Atlantic, Catherine Robson explores how recitation altered the ordinary people who committed poems to heart, and changed the worlds in which they lived.

Heart Beats begins by investigating recitation's progress within British and American public educational systems over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and weighs the factors that influenced which poems were most frequently assigned. Robson then scrutinizes the recitational fortunes of three short works that were once classroom classics: Felicia Hemans's "Casabianca," Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," and Charles Wolfe's "Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna." To conclude, the book considers W. E. Henley's "Invictus" and Rudyard Kipling's "If--," asking why the idea of the memorized poem arouses such different responses in the United States and Great Britain today.

A feat of imagining as well as of scholarship By Roadtripper Catherine Robson's extraordinary book, a feat of imagining as well as of scholarship, explores the memorization and reciting of poems in classrooms across England and America through substantial portions of the last two centuries. Memorization began to decline in the decades after (roughly) 1920, America holding out a bit longer than Britain, as the backlash against rote learning in both countries combined with other factors to spell the end of the practice. Robson compares herself in the introduction to a historical novelist, and her treatment of the subject throughout is lovingly and tellingly inflected with personal and familial experience. She notes that many would be willing, perhaps in a sentimental mood, to regret the loss of a world in which many individuals could recite fine-sounding lines; but she's under no illusion that bringing back that world is in the least way possible, whether or not desirable.Reviewed By WILLIAM H. You would be confused if you hadn't read the other two books first. This author keeps his prices low so you can easily afford his books. And occasionally you will find them for free or .99. The characters are well thought out and we finally see some issues resolved. I won't give it away but you won't be disappointed.

It is full of suspense, beautiful places, the best and worst of man kind, and love forever more. It also contains sadness, betrayal, and reality TV's stupidity for ignorant fans. Eric should have lived. That is the worst part for me. Robert's wisdom is forever true. Highly recommended to all readers 18 up to 100.

The female protagonist Abby started off as a meek woman and turned into a no holds bar, kick-ass heroine! I loved as she developed into this strong take no prisoners kind of person. I was so happy she was able to save her own life and the life of others especially her daughter. I let out a little yelp at the end then I realized I was on the subway and I almost missed my stop. I'm looking forward to reading more of My Antocci's books. It was a sad day for me when I realized I could not find anymore of his books!!I totally recommend this book but start from the beginning which is free and I promise you will not wait to buy the other two!!

Yes, it is eroctic but the enjoyment it provides is as high as the ceiling. I never thought that the book can give and provide so much information about sex. If you want to spice up your sex life, here it is! Great read on different positions. I must say this author has very creative in the positioning that can be made possible in the bedroom. With the different sex positions taught, it would greatly improve a couple's sex life and bonding. It isn't not just about being physically attached, it will also give way to deepen a couple's intimacy. Each position was designed not only to provide released but to have fun and that both partners are pleased and satisfied. The author did a great job. I highly recommend this book if you want to boost your sex appeal.

Alot of the information is pretty self explanatory but the biggest takeaway I got from the book was that it just teaches you to keep an open line of communication with your partner, both in and outside of the bedroom. Chapter 5 is the strongest part of the book. You're going to learn the various positions, get a detailed breakdown of each and a nice little image too :) If you're trying to pick up something new this book is for you

In this book briefly explained different ways of sex and if these ways used then you can get more fun and taste of sex. In this book the author descried about the sex position. All position are amazing. Highly recommended.
