Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914. in this collection you will find: • A STUDY IN SCARLET • The Sign of the Four • THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES • The Valley Of Fear • MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES • THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES • A Collection of Holmes Adventures • The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes • THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES ++ Arthur Conan Doyle-Biography link for further reading All in one elegantly formatted Book for ease of use and enjoyment on your Kindle device enjoy.

About the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish physician and prolific writer of fiction and nonfiction. He is most well known for his four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring the legendary and eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, was modeled after Doyle's colleague, physician and surgeon Dr. Joseph Bell, who had been known for his acute powers of deductive observation. In his real life, Doyle worked in the name of justice too. He personally investigated two cases of innocent men who had been wrongfully imprisoned and helped to get them exonerated for their "crimes."

Beautiful single-volume edition for a great price By Silvester Percival This is a beautiful, well constructed, and finely printed volume of the collected works of Sherlock Holmes. These are my impressions of the book (mostly good!):THE PROS:* It is a hardcover book with a cloth cover. It has an elegant houndstooth pattern and simple cover design (as shown in the picture). It also comes with a yellow ribbon bookmark and a slipcase for storage. Overall I think it's a really attractive book that would certainly catch my eye on the shelf. It's one of those book designs that makes you want to read it.* The binding is cloth and seems to be very durable. Cloth bindings are, of course, commonly used on big books, such as bibles and dictionaries, that are large and heavy and need to last a long time. I think that's the goal with this volume as well.* The book itself is quite large: approximately 10 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and nearly 3 inches thick. It's also fairly heavy owing to its thinnish pages. In my opinion, these attributes qualify as good things. The entire collected works are here in one volume, which I can keep in a single place on my bookshelf, and use as a single volume when I want to take the book on a trip or read the stories to my children. But I see that this is a matter of preference (see my "cons" section below).* The text is printed on the small side, but I think it falls easily within the readable category (not always to be expected from a single volume edition of Sherlock!). See my photo for a better look.* The paper is nice, in my opinion. It's not quite as thin or glossy as bible pages, but it's on the thin side. Any thicker and it could never fit into a single volume.* The price is right. I briefly considered The Complete Sherlock Holmes (The Heirloom Collection), which is beautiful and seems nice (complete with illustrations), but it is $60 and seemed on the pricey side. This Knickerbocker Classics edition is much more affordable, and has the added benefit of matching a large number of other collections of other famous novels.* Best of all, it contains all 4 novels and 56 short stories -- the full collection, printed in order of publication.THE CONS:* Many of the things I stated in PROS could also be CONS depending on individual preference.* Some may prefer to have their Sherlock divided into tiny, lightweight paperbacks that they can stuff in a jacket pocket or purse to read on the bus or at the coffee shop. This volume is not very suitable for that. It's large and heavy and would be MOST awkward to read on the bus.* Others may find the print to be too small. I have attached a photograph to this product page so that you can get a better idea of how it looks. I would say it's slightly smaller than most academic texts. Personally, that doesn't bother me. But older readers, children, or individuals with bad eyesight may want to look for one printed on a larger font.* The book is NOT illustrated. Again, to me, this is immaterial, but a large number of readers have become accustomed to Sherlock illustrations and take great care to find books that have certain iterations by certain illustrators, and so on. Keep looking if you want lavish illustrations. I think what you get in this edition is a plain, no-nonsense, quality binding for those interested merely in reading.Overall, I think it's a great edition for buyers with certain preferences. If it meets your criteria, I recommend it with five stars.

I have a couple of other versions already (that I can now expunge forever), but they are all US versions. Many people may not realize that the manuscripts were altered when they were published in the US. For instance, The Reigate Squires became The Reigate Puzzle. The rival stables in Silver Blaze changed from Capleton to Mapleton (goodness only knows why). And some entire passages were omitted. For example, in the Yellow Face, there is a whole passage where Holmes talks about the putting of sham flies into the sham amber of pipes that is completely missing from US editions. So far I have also not come across any of the egregious typos that appear in other Kindle editions of Holmes. There are no illustrations, as another reviewer has pointed out, but as I already own an excellent two volume annotated hardcover set by William S. Baring-Gould, that does not bother me. I just wanted this to read while traveling.Update 5/27/2014 I would take off 1/2 a star because there is not a decent table of contents. You cannot jump to an individual story. I didn't realize how important that is until I lost my place while reading!

Great Collection at Great Price By JWW Originally ordered another collection by a different publisher but found that the stories were printed out of order. I ordered this (my first Knickerbocker Classics) edition and was very pleased with the quality. The cover is houndstooth fabric that is a pleasure to hold. The print is easy to read with a good sized font on durable paper. I was concerned that the book would have typos since the price seemed too reasonable, but none were found. The only downside, and a minor one at that, is that there are none of the popular illustrations by Sidney Paget. I am very pleased with this purchase and have ordered a few other collections from Knickerbocker Classics.

"The New Civilization || - Rites of Love" compares today’s attitudes toward sex, childbirth, family and education with those of our forebears. Their depth of understanding may cause you to wonder when and how we lost this extraordinary knowledge. Anastasia assures us that it can be regained. Through the fascinating life-story of one family, Megre portrays the radiant world of the ancient Russian Vedic civilization, documents the drama of its destruction and then reveals its rebirth—millennia later—in our present time.

The New Civilization II - Rites of Love (Ringing Cedars of Russia) (Volume 8), by Vladimir Megre

About the Author Vladimir Nikolaevich Megre (born 23 July, 1950 in Kuznichi village, Gorodnyansky District, Chernigov Region in Ukraine), the author of The Ringing Cedars of Russia book series, was a well-known entrepreneur. He spent most of his childhood with his grandmother Efrosinia Verkhusha, a village healer. As a teenager Vladimir occasionally visited Father Feodorit, a priest of the Trinity-Sergiyev Monastery. Later he was shown there the picture «The One and Only» which he described in his second book before the picture was revealed to the world. Vladimir started an independent life early and left the parents' house at the age of 16. Since 1974 he lived in Novosibirsk and worked as a photographer with Novosibirskoblfoto, a service company. At the beginning of Perestroika (reforms of the late 1980s) he was the president of the Inter-Regional Association of Siberian Entrepreneurs. In 1994-5 he organized two large-scale trade expeditions with a fleet of river steamers along the River Ob along the route Novosibirsk -- Salekhard -- Novosibirsk at his own expense. On this trip, an encounter with Anastasia in the Siberian taiga changed his entire life. It had been a secret for a long time for relatives and friends what made him, an entrepreneur with ten years experience, to pledge his property and spend his savings on unprofitable trading trips. The mystery was revealed in his books with Anastasia as the main character. Vladimir Megre brought something really invaluable from the trips. Throughout 1996-2006 nine books were written by Vladimir Megre (The Ringing Cedars of Russia Series: Anastasia, The Ringing Cedars of Russia, The Space of Love, Co-Creation, Who Are We?, Book of Kin, The Energy of Life, The New Civilization, Rites of Love). In 2011 the author became Laureate of Gusi Peace Prize.

By blue firestar agate Having read most of the other books in the series I have to say this book was the "tipping point" as far as the series believably goes. Could not buy into the 1,000 year sleep and the 999,000 years of being so called awake mentioned in the book especially being tied to the year 2000. Humans have long had a track record of destroying natural habitats long before the last 1,000 years. And the premise that nature is here for our bidding is plain silly and ridiculous. The term Vedruss used in the book for a combination of Vedic and Russian seemed to be a pretty juvenile literary device to me. The Vedic civilization was in India not the former Soviet Union. Not exactly imaginative here is it?Sad to say I have to believe now the entire series is totally fiction and not based on any natural or scientific facts. However for a positive note the books in the series get an A for Pseudoscience and "New Age" psychobabble!

Kindle version vs Print By Amazon Customer I bought this book on Kindle to avoid shipping costs - mission accomplished...but I have mixed feelings. On the whole I find the series to be amazing! Its easy to take inspiring ideas from the book and quickly put them to use in your life.Yet, I think the print version seems better for some reason? I see they're using a new translator now, so maybe it all comes down to that rather than print vs ebook.I've ordered the 2nd edition of the books (black covers w/ flowers) to read and compare. I loved the detailed translations I read in the 2nd edition. It seemed like the previous translator, Leonid Sharashkin, really put a lot of energy into making a quality translation with explanations (footnotes galore!). I devour details and background information is often critical to get the whole picture (culture).I'll probably study and compare the books for a while as the information sinks in. But meanwhile I'll read the Kindle version of Anasta (the next book in the series) which is now available and calling my name...

No idea if these are true accounts in this (these) book(s), but they bring about wonderful feelings nonetheless. I highly recommend to someone with an open mind and an open heart. Enjoy!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Hardboiled and Gritty! By Gerry Griffiths Entertaining blend of crime stories. A few of my personal favorites were "It Bothers Me" by Erik Arneson about a woman seeking revenge on the man who killed her husband: "Blood Makes the Grass Grow" by Bracken MacLeod about a married couple that are taken hostage by a desperate band of crooks; and "Drone" by Rob Hart about two entrepreneur brothers with a scheme to get rich quick. Highly recommend.

Some of the stories had Good Guys as protagonists. Other held true to the usual format of Bad Guys and even Worse Guys. Some stories are kind of humorous, yet still pretty dark.Good read!!

Coldwell Like a baseball hitter who practices to improve his craft, there is a killer on the streets of New York City who is honing his skills. Dubbed “the Baseball Bat Killer,” (BBK) this brutal slugger bashes the skulls of unsuspecting single, unattached men. With little to go on and plenty of other crimes on their plates, NYPD investigators Chang and Pizaka call upon Zeb Carter, a special ops expert with a gift for solving problems that no one else can. Zeb brings in some of his team – a fellow Warrior called Broker and twins Meghan and Beth Peterson – to help his track down the elusive BBK.In a departure from his previous “Warrior” novels, Ty Patterson takes us on a psychological thrill ride. His killer is well developed, both his present-day stalker-homicidal sociopath persona, and his back-story. I cannot say enough good things about the way Patterson has presented this character, especially since his previous novels have all been action, action, and more action. The killer has his own voice and the voice of “the thing,” and there are a few instances where these voices, mixed in with the live conversation, get rather difficult to sort out. Overall, it is a very effective technique for revealing this person to us.For those who read Warrior books for the action, do not despair! The twins add beauty to the Warrior team; Zeb is the beast. While he is observant, patient, and controlled, he does have a couple of opportunities to unleash his “inner beast.”There are also some wonderfully concocted twists that caught me totally off guard. My only criticism is that one surprise leads to a whole different thread which felt disjointed to me; even though it did make sense, it felt drawn out and needed just a few more references to the main story to tie it together. One other small flaw is that for those who have not read his previous books, there is not enough information about some of the main characters. This makes several situations confusing to the reader and could be remedied with just a few sentences of detail to fill in the blanks. Additionally, without revealing any secrets, I will say that a few clues seem a bit obscure. However, I have been a beta reader for Ty’s previous two novels, and I am pleased to say that he continues to evolve and grow as a writer and storyteller. I appreciate having the While he doesn’t quite hit this one out of the ballpark, in my opinion, Patterson comes close. He comes very close.4 stars

Watch out Jack Reacher, Your competition is getting better and fierce By Merril Anil I think i am liking Zeb carter (our protagonist) more than Jack Reacher for by the sequence of four books, our character has become more polished, fierce and unstoppable. The book is getting more and more irresistible and hard to put down. The author is getting good and stronger at his work and he is becoming a strong threat to his contemporaries with a well sketched set of characters and even stronger story plot. What i loved about this book is that the author has briefed all the previous books so beautifully and seamlessly that you could easily read this book as a standalone. The story is fresh for each book has only the central characters revisiting but with an effective background brief, you wont suffer much if you haven't read the previous booksThere is though one problem with the book. The jump from one scene to another is almost instantly and it becomes a little bit of task to track our character's location and setting of the scene. Maybe it was in the formatting of the book or narration but somehow the transition was a bit jerky. Almost flickering between characters and scenes.Undoubtedly The warrior series is out for blood. Blood of other popular fictional action heroes especially Jack Reacher. By the fourth book the series has gone golden and solid with both its sets of characters and strong story plot. The author needs to smooth the transition between various scenes a little more but otherwise this book is unbeatable in its genre. A terrific read and a blood pumping adrenaline read along with being rich in plot.

He chooses his victims randomly and disappears like a ghost after his murderous act. The NYPD are baffled and turn to Special Ops agent, Zeb Carter. Zeb is a killer himself, an assassin, a hunter. He hunts terrorists, despots, killers of all kinds, but even his skills get him nowhere as the killer always stays one step ahead. Zeb's only hope is that the killer makes a mistake. The killer doesn't, he already has Zeb Carter on his radar. The killer turn’s hunter, Zeb Carter is prey. What did I like? We are here on the 4th book of the series and by now if you have read them in order which I recommend but you don’t have to, the author has briefed all the previous books so beautifully and seamlessly that you could easily read this book as a standalone. The story is all on it’s own for each book has only the central characters but with an effective background brief, you will be up to date even if you haven't read the previous books. Anyway you know that Zeb has a secret weapon that only he knows about and which helps him whenever he needs it. I love this point that the author has added to the story line. Many of us have this secret that we use and no one ever knows about. It helps us make decisions and takes us out of harm’s way sometimes. It certainly works for Zeb.What will you like? In this one we are on a psychological thrill ride. The killer is well developed, both his present-day stalker-homicidal sociopath persona, and his back-story. Again I love the way our author has presented this character, especially since previously it has all been action, action, and more action. The killer has his own voice and the voice of a serial killer and there are a few instances where these voices, stand alone and yet mix with the live conversation. Overall, this is an interesting technique for adding this killer to the story line. You will see the research that it took to develop this character and to bring him to life. You will love the work that it took to find him and the work of all the characters working together to do that. When you are hunting someone that appears like a ghost it takes the work of a village to make the most of all of the work required. You will also appreciate the relationships of the team and what drives them to do what they do but importantly what they will do when one or more are at risk of danger. This one is a really emotionally involved story and I sure held my breath more than once.I have been a beta reader for this author since book one and I love this as it gives me the chance to work with new authors and follow along during their growth. I have been amazed at the development that Mr. Patterson has shown since the first book and I don’t think he is anywhere close to stopping till he reaches the big leagues. He certainly has shown me that he deserves to be there.

From the Author I grew up reading Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason novels until I discovered John Grisham. I hope I can bring a fraction of the reading pleasure to my readers as I have received from those two wonderful authors.

From the Back Cover The Advocate, The Advocate's Betrayal, and The Advocate's Conviction are the first three in a seven-book series: The Advocate, The Advocate's Betrayal, The Advocate's Conviction, The Advocate's Dilemma, The Advocate's Ex Parte, The Advocate's Felony, and The Advocate's Geocache.

About the Author Teresa Burrell has dedicated her life to helping children and their families. As an attorney, Ms. Burrell has spent countless hours working pro bono in the Family Law Court system. Ms. Burrell continues to advocate children's issues and write novels, many of which are inspired by actual legal cases.

The setting is familiar and I can picture being there. But most of all the stories, plural, in each book captivate my heart and I can't wait to see what will happen. Just enough excitement and fear to make you want to keep reading. 5 stars

She was the woman he was going to marry... A man shoots his young wife to death. He drives to a freeway overpass, gets out, shoots himself, and drops 100 feet to the freeway below, crushing a Toyota Camry. Inside is an elementary school teacher named Jacqueline Dwyer, who dies at the scene. Ty Buchanan is a hotshot lawyer. Jacqueline Dwyer was the woman he was going to marry. Ty goes into a tailspin. And it gets worse when a mysterious man finds him at the funeral and says Jacqueline’s death may not have been an accident after all. In fact, she may have been murdered. Now Ty Buchanan will risk everything, including his skyrocketing career, to find out what really happened to the only woman he ever truly loved. That is if he can stay alive. Because someone out there does not want him to know the truth. From the high-rises of the city’s most powerful law firms to the mean streets of gangland L.A., Try Dying is a blistering thrill ride in the finest tradition of modern noir. “Bell, an attorney turned prolific novelist, has created in Buchanan an appealing and series-worthy protagonist, and the tale equally balances action and drama, motion and emotion. Readers who pride themselves on figuring out the answers before an author reveals them are in for a surprise, too: Bell is very good at keeping secrets. Fans of thrillers with lawyers as their central characters—John Lescroart and Phillip Margolin, especially—will welcome this new addition to their must-read lists.” – Booklist

Try Dying (Ty Buchanan Legal Thriller #1), by James Scott Bell

From Publishers Weekly Former trial lawyer Bell (No Legal Grounds) starts this engaging whodunit series kickoff by plunging successful young L.A. attorney Ty Buchanan into deep mourning for his fiancée, Jacqueline Dwyer. Apparently, wife-murderer Ernesto Bonilla shot himself on a highway overpass and his body landed on Dwyer's car, killing her. Buchanan, in the grip of intense grief, is further burdened when a scruffy man accosts him at the funeral and demands money in exchange for the truth: that Dwyer survived Bonilla's fall, only to be murdered. When the police dismiss this explanation, Buchanan risks his career and his life to get to the bottom of the mystery, crossing paths with a variety of powerful movers and shakers and ending up a murder suspect himself. Readers will enjoy Bell's talent for description and character development, even if the overall setup of a white-collar worker scouring the mean streets is familiar terrain. (Oct.) From Booklist Attorney Ty Buchanan is prepping a potentially career-making case involving repressed memories (he's defending a doctor who, after publicly criticizing a repressed-memory expert, is now being sued for defamation). When his fiancée is killed in what appears to be a freakish coincidence, Ty is shattered. And when he learns that Jacqueline might have been murdered, he risks his career and his life to find the truth. Bell, an attorney turned prolific novelist, has created in Buchanan an appealing and series-worthy protagonist (he's already working on the second Buchanan novel), and the tale equally balances action and drama, motion and emotion. Readers who pride themselves on figuring out the answers before an author reveals them are in for a surprise, too: Bell is very good at keeping secrets. Fans of thrillers with lawyers as their central characters—Lescroart and Margolin, especially—will welcome this new addition to their must-read lists. Pitt, David

About the Author A former trial lawyer associated with one of L.A.'s top law firms and later working out of an independent office, James Scott Bell has written over 300 articles on trial law, as well as six books for trial lawyers. Now a prolific fiction writer, he applies his in-depth knowledge of the justice system to his legal thrillers. www.jamesscottbell.com.

Darlington Ty Buchanan's beloved fiancé has just died in a freak Hollywood style accident, instantly spinning his world off its axis. Maybe someday he'll recover. Maybe someday he'll make sense of his emotions and get on with his life without Jacquelyn. Only someday doesn't come, and Ty watches himself become a man he never dreamed he'd be. An attorney sworn to uphold the law, he's soon breaking it to find out the truth about Jacquelyn's death. Was it really accidental? In the vein of Brandt Dodson's Colton Parker series, Try Dying is a no-nonsense crime novel with a legal bent rather than a private investigator or cop angle. Cinematic in feel due to Bell's expert use of snappy dialogue, there's also a nice peppering of movie references, no doubt coming straight from Bell's own love of classic films. Even Ty Buchanan is a namesake derived from characters in two movies, Tyler Durden in "Fight Club" (1999) and Tom Buchanan in "Buchanan Rides Alone" (1958).In a recent interview Bell reveals: "I haven't been happy about some of the trends in contemporary, secular suspense. And I think the audience out there is getting tired of the gratuitous elements. I believe you can write page-turning suspense without that, like some of the great crime novels of the 40s and 50s. I wanted to offer that, because I see the need for it."That's one of the great things about Try Dying. Life is painted in all its edgy glory, and the underbelly of LA is as much a character as Ty. Yet through it all Bell manages to show us this world without rolling us through the gutter. He's accomplished exactly what he set out to accomplish--to craft an action-laced thriller devoid of smut. Many an author has decided you can't portray life as it is without swearing, gore, and sex, but Jim proves you can. A very small quibble is I was a little confused a few times by the novel's extensive cast.Even though Try Dying isn't Christian fiction per se, Jim freely portrays Biblical principles, such as forgiveness in a priest's heart even though he's paid a stiff price for a molestation he didn't commit. In some ways I found the Christian take-away value more poignant than you find in much of today's "Christian fiction". It's clear the priest and a basketball playing nun have a real relationship with Jesus, and they become Ty's confidants. Hopefully they'll be involved in the next Ty Buchanan novel, Try Darkness, and continue to shine light into Ty's world.Truth is truth, and Bell makes sure to weave it through all of his books. Ty's journey is a harrowing one, filled with enough beatings, explosions, and bad guys to rival the best crime fiction has to offer, but morality isn't left in the dust. Try Dying is a dynamic start to a new series, filled with colorful characters and elaborate plots.--Reviewed by C.J. Darlington for TitleTrakk

Bell enters a new genre with a great new series By Bill Garrison James Scott Bell's TRY DYING features young, hot-shot lawyer Ty Buchannon forced into a life or death struggle after his fiance tragically dies in a traffic accident. Or was it an accident? A gang-banger shoots his girlfriend then goes to a highway overpass where he kills himself. His dead body falls on an oncoming car, killing Ty's fiance. Or did it kill her? Maybe she was alive and then killed after the body fell into her car.At his fiance's funeral, a homeless man confronts Ty to tell him his girlfiend might have been murdered. Then the homeless man knocks him out and robs him. Now Ty is obssessed with finding the truth. He starts out doing little things like contacting the police who investigated the accident and the attractive reporter who was on the scene. Ty begins to find answers and they lead him to Rudy Barocos, a self-help guru that specializes in showing former gangsters the straight and narrow. Ty is also working a high profile case of repressed memories and child abuse. Grief from his fiance's death has overwhelmed him and Ty is shocked at his own behavior and how far he will go to learn the truth. This novel marks a departure for Bell, who has made a name for himself as a writer of legal inspirational thrillers. With TRY DYING, Bell has switched genres and publishers. Through Centerstreet publishing, he is writing a mainstream suspense novel that is gritty and supsensful but doesn't have all the bad language or extreme violence found in so many other novels today. This is not a Christian, or inspirational novel, but two of its supporting characters are a priest and a nun. You will find more spirituality in this novel than you will in most all other suspense novels. I applaud Bell for this new step in his career and can't wait for the next book in the series.I enjoyed TRY DYING and believe Ty Buchannon is a great character with a lot of potential. This novel is told from a 1st person point of view, so the reader learns a lot about Ty and his view on the world. I found this novel to be missing strong secondary characters that are so common in other Bell novels. By writing fron Ty's POV, if he doesn't get close to a woman, then the readers don't either. This novel had a lot of potentially strong female characters, but none really stood out. Since this is a series, I see the potential for some strong relationships to develop in the next novel or two. This is a great book to give to someone as a gift to interest them in Christian suspense fiction. I recommend it to all Bell fans as well.

By Bendigo199 I almost did not read this book because of a bad review but I read some of the good reviews and decided to take a chance. Boy was I ever glad I did! I recommend this book to anyone who likes an action packed who done it. I liked it so much I'm going to buy the next in the series. Enjoy a spine chilling read.

It’s time that we change our attitudes about aging. It’s going to happen to us, whether we complain about it or decide to live our best, most beautiful life. Getting older is a gift; not everyone gets to do it. Personally, I wouldn’t trade my life today to be in my twenties again for anything. Besides, in our current beauty world, you have choices. You can slow down the appearance of aging by simply changing some daily habits, and look younger by adding a little color to your makeup routine.

Beauty Rewind is a detailed guide to addressing your concerns about aging: what causes it, how to prevent it from happening prematurely, how to correct or camouflage it naturally or aggressively, the best products to enhance your skin, the makeup looks that age you, and how to use makeup and current antiaging technology to look as young as you feel. Whether you’re in your late twenties or eighties, I will give you the knowledge to help you look your best at any age.

This book is packed with advice I’ve collected in my twenty-plus years in the beauty industry. So whether you want to recapture your image from ten years ago (before your eyelids started drooping), emphasize your best features now, or just learn how to get rid of the sleep creases on your face before you get to work, then read ahead. And yes, in true Taylor fashion, you’ll learn how to apply a smokey eye that even the young girls will envy.

BEAUTY SCHOOL

From Skin-Care Basics to the Latest in Antiaging Technology

Aging happens to us all. But have you noticed some women seem to age better than others? I’ve seen some fortysomethings look like they’re in their late twenties, while others look like they’re in their fifties. We all age at various rates; the trick is to slow that rate down as much as possible and enhance the features we love. Sometimes aging well is genetic, but even good genes will only take you so far. As a makeup artist, I feel truly blessed to have met and worked with thousands of women—real women who don’t have on-call dermatologists and celebrity makeup artists, or referrals to the next big plastic surgeon. As they get older, many women who have never worn makeup all of a sudden feel like they need a little help.

GENETICS AND SKIN

They say you can always tell what a woman will look like as she ages if you look at her mother. That’s only partly true. Genes do play a role in how we age. They determine how you make proteins and collagen, which gives skin its strength, and they’re also why some women age faster than others. Genetics also play a role in whether your skin will tend to freckle, wrinkle, or sag first when aging. Thankfully, however, your daily habits—how you take care of your body and skin—will be the most important factor in how you age.

PREMATURE AGING

Genes also determine skin color, which is a huge factor in how you are affected by elements in the environment, such as sunlight. While there are several contributors to premature aging, stress, environmental factors, smoking, and the sun are the biggest. The number one cause of premature aging is the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, which break down our skin. As we age, several things happen to our skin that can make us look older. Our skin gets thinner as it loses fatty tissue. The collagen breaks down, causing our face to sag. We produce less oil in our glands, which causes skin to become drier. We produce less melanin, which causes our skin color to become sallow and lose definition, as well as reduces our natural protection from environmental skin damage. Skin pigmentation or melanin acts as a natural sunscreen. The lighter your skin, the more sensitive you are to sun damage. This does not mean that those with darker skin should not protect themselves. While the higher melanin content of darker skin gives some protection from the sun and protects the epidermis (the top layer), the underlying part of the dermis (inside layers) is still open to damage like lighter skin. The result is the breakdown of collagen, which causes skin to sag. This is why lighter skin tends to wrinkle earlier in the aging process, while darker skin tends to sag. Aging can happen at a rapid pace if you sit back and let it happen—or you can slow down the process by doing something about it.

Our lives are busier than ever, but taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. A few minutes and four simple steps: washing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting, will make a world of difference in how your skin ages.

THE DAILY FOUR

1. WASH

I know the last thing you want to do after a hard day is wash your face, but a clean face ensures you don’t feed the bacteria on your skin. Dirty skin creates clogged pores and excess dead skin cells, which ultimately lead to aging skin. The key is to remove all difficult makeup prior to washing your face. This includes dark-colored lipsticks or glosses, as well as smudge-proof eye makeup such as eyeliners and mascaras. Doing this prior to washing will ensure a complete cleanse.

When using a foaming or gel cleanser, gently splash warm water on your face several times to loosen dirt and makeup. Use your fingers to rub in cleanser in a circular, upward motion; don’t forget your jawline and harder-to-reach areas such as the sides of your nose. Avoid washing your face in an up-and-down vertical motion, which can pull on skin. Use warm water to rinse skin and repeat if necessary. In the morning, rinse skin with cool water (not cold water, as this could pop capillaries). Rinsing with cool water reduces swelling that can occur during sleep and wakes up the senses.

A favorite of women in the East and rapidly gaining popularity in the West, cleansing oils can be a great solution for sensitive as well as dry skin. Apply a pump of cleansing oil to your fingers and massage it into your face and neck in circular motions for a minimum of one minute, and rinse clean.

2. EXFOLIATE

We produce new skin about every twenty-eight days when we are young. As we age, that rate drastically reduces. We need to exfoliate, sloughing off old skin cells, to increase the rate at which new skin is produced. Exfoliating also removes excess dirt and oil, which your cleanser may not have picked up; this gives skin a fresher look, and also helps to shrink pores.

Exfoliate daily in the morning and evening, prior to moisturizing. Most exfoliants can be applied with a cotton pad; however, be certain to avoid the eye area. When using aggressive exfoliants like glycolic acid or Retin-A, use only during evening regimens, as sun exposure to fresh skin can accelerate skin damage. With all exfoliants, it is essential to wear a sunscreen with SPF 30-plus to protect the skin from harmful rays, which can be even more damaging to the newer skin.

FRUIT ENZYME: Derived from fruits such as papaya and pineapple, fruit enzyme exfoliants gently loosen the bonds that hold dead skin cells onto the surface. Great for exfoliating delicate, sensitive skin.

SALICYLIC ACID: A plant-based acid, which helps skin cell turnover. Works best for oily and acne-prone skin.

GLYCOLIC ACID: A sugar-based acid that’s great for unclogging pores and removing dead cells that create dull-looking skin. Start with products containing 5 percent glycolic acid and increase to only those with a content of 10 percent if necessary. Chemical peels contain 20 percent to 70 percent glycolic acid, and should never be done at home.

RETINOL: Nonprescription-strength vitamin A derived from animals.

RETIN-A: A prescription-strength acid derivative of vitamin A. Also known as tretinoin, it is an aggressive exfoliant that can be used daily at home with the supervision of your doctor. Retin-A can cause peeling of the skin, which can make applying foundation difficult. Try cutting down usage to every other day should this occur and tap on foundation to prevent dead skin from rolling off, a sign that you may be applying too often.

3. MOISTURIZE

Help keep skin moist by applying moisturizing products immediately after toweling off and exfoliating to provide the greatest absorption. Areas that don’t have oil glands, such as the lips, or have minimal oil glands, such as the eye area, need special attention and require moisturizers made specifically for these areas.

Use a moisturizer with SPF in the morning and a treatment one in the evening. This can be a light one for normal to combination skin or a thicker version for dry or mature skin. Apply to the skin in circular motions, taking your time to massage it in. Don’t forget to apply to the neck and chest, too. Look for moisturizers that contain antioxidants (such as vitamins C and E) to protect from free radicals (airborne agents that cause cellular damage).

HYDRATING TONER: While an exfoliant is also called a toner, the use of a hydrating toner is different, and should become part of your normal routine. Hydrating toner is a watery substance that you gently tap onto the face or apply with a cotton pad. It usually contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (binds water to cells), and creates a deep glow to the skin from within.

EYE CREAM: The skin around the eyes is incredibly thin—a fraction of the thickness of the rest of your skin. This is why signs of aging show first around the eyes as fine lines or crow’s-feet. It’s essential to treat the area from the brow to the cheekbone delicately. Apply eye cream before makeup, to ensure a smooth application, and again during your evening regimen before sleep, when skin renews itself (something to think about the next time you rub your eyes or decide to skip the eye cream).

SERUMS: Contain concentrated products (usually peptides and antioxidants) that help prevent future aging as well as correct skin damage.

PEPTIDES: Peptides are a chain of amino acids that act as messengers to cells, and tell the skin what to do. Peptides can tell cells to produce more collagen. Look for serums or moisturizers that contain peptides.

ANTIOXIDANTS: Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E are essential in destroying free radicals, which can damage skin.

Drink plenty of water to keep the skin’s elasticity at its best.

Adam somehow knew right away, right from the very first sentence, that the life he had known as a content suburban married father of two was forever gone. It was a simple sentence  on  the  face  of  it,  but there was  something   in  the  tone, something  knowing  and  even  caring,  that  let Adam  know  that nothing  would ever be the same. “You didn’t have to stay with her,” the stranger said. They were in the American Legion Hall in Cedarfield, New Jersey. Cedarfield was a town loaded up with wealthy hedge fund managers and bankers and other financial masters-of-the-universe types. They liked to drink  beer in the American  Legion Hall  be- cause  it was  comfortable slumming,  a way  to  pretend  that  they were  salt-of-the-earth good  ol’ boys,  like something  in a Dodge Ram commercial, when they were anything  but. Adam stood by the sticky bar. There was a dartboard behind him. Neon signs advertised Miller Lite, but Adam had a bottle of Budweiser in his right hand.  He turned to the man, who had just sidled up to him, and even though Adam already knew the answer, he asked the man, “Are you talking to me?” The guy was younger than most of the fathers, thinner, almost gaunt, with big, piercing blue eyes. His arms were white and reedy with a hint of a tattoo showing beneath one of the short sleeves. He was wearing a baseball cap. He wasn’t quite a hipster, but there was something of a wonk attitude coming off him, like some guy who ran a tech department and never saw the sun. The  piercing  blue  eyes held Adam’s  with  an  earnestness  that made  him  want  to  turn  away. “She told you she was pregnant, right?” Adam felt his grip on the bottle tighten. “That’s why you stayed. Corinne told you she was pregnant.” It was right then that Adam felt some kind of switch go off in his chest, as if someone had tripped the red digital timer on some movie bomb and now it had started to tick down. Tick, tick, tick, tick. “Do I know you?” Adam asked. “She told you she was pregnant,” the stranger continued. “Corinne, I mean. She told you she was pregnant and then she lost the baby.” The American Legion Hall was loaded up with town dads sporting those white baseball T-shirts with the three-quarter sleeves and either baggy cargo shorts or perfectly no-assed Dad jeans. Lots of them wore baseball caps. Tonight was the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth- grade boys’ lacrosse draft and A-team selections. If you ever wanted to witness type As behaving as such in their natural habitat, Adam thought, watch when parents get involved in their own offsprings’ team selections. The Discovery Channel should film this. “You felt obligated to stay, am I right?” the man asked. “I don’t know who the hell—” “She lied, Adam.” The younger man spoke with such conviction, not just as though he knew for certain but that, at the end of the day, he had Adam’s best interest at heart. “Corinne made it all up. She was never pregnant.” The words kept landing like punches, dazing Adam, sapping his resistance, leaving him shaken and confused and ready to take a standing  eight count. He wanted to fight back, grab the guy by the shirt, toss him across the room for insulting his wife like this. But he didn’t for two reasons. One, there was the whole  dazed-like-taking-punches, sapped- resistance thing. Two, something about the way the man spoke, something about the guy’s confident tone, the damn conviction in his voice, made Adam start thinking it might be smartest to listen. “Who are you?” Adam asked. “Does it matter?” “Yeah, it does.” “I’m the stranger,” he said. “The stranger with important knowledge. She lied to you, Adam. Corinne.  She was never pregnant. It was all a ruse to get you back.” Adam shook his head. He swam through, tried to stay rational and calm. “I saw the pregnancy test.” “Fake.” “I saw the sonogram.” “Again fake.” He held up a hand before Adam could say more. “And yes, so was the stomach.  Or should I say stomachs.  Once Corinne started to show, you never saw her naked, right? What did she do, claim some kind of late-night sickness so you wouldn’t have sex? That’s what happens most times.  So when the miscarriage occurs, you can kinda look back on the whole thing and realize the pregnancy was difficult right from the start.” A booming voice from the other side of the hall called out, “Okay, guys, grab a fresh beer and let’s get this show on the road.” The voice belonged to Tripp Evans, the president of the lacrosse league, a former Madison Avenue ad exec and a pretty good guy. The other dads started to grab aluminum chairs, the kind you use for your kid’s school concert, from a rack and placed them in a circle around the room. Tripp Evans looked over at Adam, spotted the undoubtedly pale expression on his face, and frowned his concern. Adam shook him off and turned back to the stranger. “Who the hell are you?” “Think of me as your savior. Or like the friend who just released you from prison.” “You’re full of crap.” All conversation had pretty much ended.  The voices were hushed now, the sounds of scraping chairs echoing in the still hall. The fathers were getting their game faces on for the draft. Adam hated this. He wasn’t even supposed to be here—Corinne was. She was the treasurer of the lacrosse board, but her school had changed the scheduling of her teachers’ conference in Atlantic City, and even though this was the biggest day of the year for Cedarfield lacrosse— indeed the main reason Corinne had become so active—Adam had been forced to step in for her. “You should be thanking me,” the man said. “What are you talking about?” For the first time, the man smiled. It was, Adam couldn’t help but notice, a kind smile, the smile of a healer, of a man who just wants to do the right thing. “You’re free,” the stranger said. “You’re a liar.” “You know better, don’t you, Adam?” From across the room, Tripp Evans called, “Adam?” He turned toward them. Everyone was seated now except Adam and the stranger. “I have to go now,” the stranger whispered. “But if you really need proof, check your Visa card.  Look for a charge to Novelty Funsy.” “Wait—” “One more thing.” The man leaned in close. “If I were you, I’d probably run DNA tests on your two boys.” Tick, tick, tick . . . ka-boom. “What?” “I have no evidence on that, but when a woman is willing to lie about something like this, well, it’s a pretty good bet it isn’t her first time.” And then, with Adam dazed anew by this final accusation, the stranger hurried out the door.

He is convinced that he would do everything in his power to keep his family safe and happy. But the dream gives way to reality when a stranger tells Adam that his wife faked her pregnancy and miscarriage to keep him from leaving. The stranger provides evidence of that contention and then suggests, while admitting that he's only speculating, that Adam might want to do a DNA test to be sure that he's really the father of his sons. The Stranger's next encounters are with Heidi Dann, who learns something unpleasant about a family member, and Michaela Siegel, who learns the truth about an incident that had a serious impact upon her young life. Why the stranger drops bombshells on people and how he learns their secrets remain a mystery through much of the novel. What seems like a fairly straightforward crime in the novel's first half becomes more complex as the second half of the story begins to unfold.Saying much more about the plot would be a crime in itself, so I won't. The novel's background details, ranging from female bodybuilding competition to Adam's attempt to prevent the city from seizing a client's home are just as interesting as the main story. I wasn't entirely convinced by the stranger's motivation for messing with people's lives, but the world is full of people who are motivated by odd beliefs so it was easy to set those doubts aside. The ending comes as something of an anti-climax, in part because the reveal of the main bad guy is fairly obvious and in part because the actions of a supporting character at the end of the novel struck me as unlikely. Despite a mildly disappointing ending, I enjoyed reading The Stranger. The pace is brisk, the characters are likable, and my interest in the plot never abated.

By Bobbewig If you've read other books by Harlan Coben, you know that once you start his books they grab hold of your attention from page one and never let go until the last word on the last page. The Stranger, Coben's latest, is no exception. If The Stranger is your first "Coben," be prepared to escape from reality for a few days because once you start it, you won't be able to put it down. It may get to the point that because you'll be spending so much time immersed in this book people in your real world will be referring to you as "The Stranger" -- sorry about that!Without getting into the plot summary, which can be found in the Amazon Book Description above, The Stranger, as stated in the jacket cover, proves that a well-placed lie can help build a wonderful life -- and a secret has the same explosive power to destroy it.Is The Stranger great literature? No, of course not. Does it challenge your credulity at times and have some character development issues? Yes, it does; which are issues not atypical of a Coben book. The Stranger is, however, a very suspenseful, highly plot-driven book filled with an abundance of twists and turns and very serviceable characters with which most readers will be able to relate. It is escapist reading at or near the top of its genre and, for me, it is Coben's most enjoyable book in a while. I'm giving The Stranger a 4-star -- actually a 4 1/2 star rating -- instead of 5-stars because I felt a few of the twists and turns, while interesting and surprising, were a bit contrived. Nonetheless, this is a very minor issue and should not hold you back for an instant from reading The Stranger. Personally, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what happened next. Enjoy!

A solid Coben mystery on the insidious nature of the information age By outwest Harlan Coben is one of the best mystery and suspense writers in the business so there are always high expectations which come with his books. For the most part, Coben does not disappoint with his latest book,The Stranger, an addictive mystery novel driven by great characters. The Stranger is a mystery set around a seemingly happy and mundane family Adam and wife, Corinne, and their two sons Ryan and Thomas who live in a nice suburban neighborhood in New Jersey. But, upon meeting a stranger at an American Legion Hall, Adam's life starts to unwind with a slow burning paranoia. The Stranger is a normal looking guy who knows things about Adam's wife and family. He knows things about his wife that a stranger should not. With each piece of information, Adam is thrown deeper and deeper into doubt and disbelief about his own reality. In classic Coben style we have elements of mystery, strong characters, and relevant and current themes as here where the book relates to the prevalence of information in the internet age. The stories herein have a strong edge to them as they feel like situations which could actually be occurring and are realistically drawn as they begin in the normal and mundane world and then take a hard left into intrigue. However, The Stranger is a bit different than Coben's other books, and though it has classic twists, turns, suspense, and wit, the book tends to slow down in the middle as its flips between characters and the confusion that has ensued because of mysterious stranger. The book also has parts which are not particularly believable and downright strange. That said, the whole the story heads to a classic Coben stunning conclusion, which makes up for the pacing issues. On the whole, though not at his best, Coben fans will probably like the book. Any general mystery reader will enjoy it too.
