“It was a gift she never wanted, but Riley hoped it would be enough to save him.” From the author of the Bestselling Kate Reid Series, comes a suspenseful novel that will keep you hooked from the very first page! In recent years, Riley Thompson has developed a gift, if anyone would really call it that. The ten year old girl from a small town in Indiana doesn’t understand why she can feel what others feel, or see what others have seen. She only knows the hurt upon looking into the eyes of her mother—the beneficiary of her father’s recent run of bad luck. A streak that has hardened his heart and often finds him drowning in the bottom of a bottle. She tries hard to be just like the other fifth graders, but life at home is hard and the pain is difficult to endure. It isn’t until the day Riley meets Carl Boyd, a Vietnam veteran, that everything changes. Visions of a terrible past, not just from war, but from a life that has stolen much from him, begins to surface in Riley’s mind. But this is far more intense and frightening than anything she has experienced before. Riley discovers her gift is quickly evolving and finds herself swimming in the memories of Carl Boyd, and experiencing a past he can’t put behind him. Even more troubling; perceiving a future of which he doesn’t yet know—a future filled with danger. All are reluctant to come to terms with Riley’s ability, especially her father. But then, he has seen this before.

I truly loved this book even though the situations were somewhat dark...that's pretty much real life for a lot of people. It was well-written and I say that because it made me care about the characters, what was happening to them, what had happened to them to bring them together and how everything would play out in the end. Even though it's told from a child's point of view, this is not a children's book. There are things that would be too frightening for a child, (out of control parent, being hunted by criminals, out of control weather, etc.) If you like suspense and well-drawn characters, this is a terrific book and I highly recommend it!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Quick Read...Worth the time By Pamela Minnaugh This was a quick read for me. The main character, Riley, is a likable 10 year old girl, with a very strange "gift". She can sense the feelings of other people. This sense is intensified when she meets a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD. The story makes a full circle by explaining her connection and the need to "help" him. There are times when the story is a bit of a reach, but it holds the readers attention. There are many unlikable characters, including Riley's parents, but the bond between Riley and Carl Boyd Sr (the Veteran) is nicely developed. The sexual content was brief and vague. Overall, I felt it was worth the read.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

The characters are spot on and developed nicely. Riley is a six year old force to be reckoned with once she sets her mind to something. The silent hero here could be her brother Dillon or the police officer who, without his belief in Riley, the reality of her gift would not have been accepted. A really great story! Definitely a page turner. Don't pass this one up because you're not quite sure, you won't be sorry! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
