The town of Soldiers Grove is nestled amongst the driftless hills of southwestern Wisconsin. Its winters are long, its warmer seasons bright and challenging. The population is fewer than 600, including those residing in the senior citizens home. Two of these seniors, Cyril and Louise, have come to live there. Unlikely as it may seem, for they come from very diverse backgrounds, they form a close friendship, and their growing attachment sparks them to adventures and unlikely locations. Ultimately they face frightening circumstances which test them to their limits, while binding and nurturing their growing love for one another.Instead of slipping gracefully away into old age, Cyril and Louise are compelled to protect themselves against a vicious threat when Balaclava, an out-of-town armed sociopath, relentlessly attempts to rob Cyril not only of his life savings but, if necessary, take his life as well. How they ultimately cope with this threat and resolve this crisis has the makings of a first class thriller. This thoughtful, bitter-sweet love story represents and chronicles much about our world and the passage of time in this accomplished work by a prize-winning writer.

The Mysteries of Soldiers Grove, by Paul Zimmer

Review "Poet Zimmer has crafted a superior love story between two senior citizens set in the little town of Soldiers Grove, Wis. One afternoon, nursing home resident Cyril Solverson sneaks out to Burkhum's Tap, where he drinks beer and bores other patrons with his endless biographical trivia. After leaving the bar, he passes a gas station where an armed man he calls Balaclava forces him into the man s pickup. The thug takes Cyril's wallet and releases him into a driving snowstorm miles from town. Back at the home, Cyril, awkward and clueless, sets out to woo a new resident, sophisticated French-born Louise. The pair begins a series of gradually bolder escapes from the facility, until Balaclava's return puts them in peril. Zimmer nails the small intimacies that gradually build the trust, love, and hope between Cyril and Louise, including a remarkable scene in which they share a dance using their canes as props." --Publishers Weekly, starred review"Age is no barrier to dreams, a truth flawlessly illustrated in Paul Zimmer's debut novel. Although this sounds like a convenient setup for what could have been a cutesy-but-light sunset romance, in author Zimmer's hands, The Mysteries of Soldiers Grove becomes a treatise on what matters most in life. Adventure or comfort. Truth or well-crafted lies. Giving or taking. There is terror here, as well as courage and self-sacrifice, and binding them all together is page after page of gorgeous prose. If you appreciate the very finest of American literature, read this book. Gunfire optional." --Mystery Scene Magazine"Humor and dialog draw you into this tale, well past pathos to honest fascination, joy, and hope. The author enters the minds of both his characters convincingly, telling their parallel lives in first person, switching from one to the other with wonderful timing, and blending honest elderly romance with just the right amount of mystery and threat. Old love is indeed "a very, very fine thing," old age is a mystery approaching its own dark finality, and old lives are well worth reading and remembering in this wonderful tale." --Sheila's Reviews

There's wit and wisdom, a gripping plot, and two endearing protagonists whose alternating voices are strong and perfectly suited to their characters. There's also evil personified in the persona of a ruthless sociopath who hunts down and terrorizes the couple who reside in a personal care home in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. Although that's the thriller aspect of this novel, there is so much more to its fabric, mainly in the coming together of two elderly people. One, Cyril, is a man who has been alone all his life, a "talker," who regales people with his recitations of brief biographies of famous and not-so famous persons from every walk of life and historical period. This he calls giving one "a life." Often these lives, sometimes fictionally embellished, echo the wary listener's life in some way, but usually serve only to drive that person away. Cyril has become a town "character," someone to be tolerated, barely, or avoided--until he meets Louise, a recent widow and new resident of the care home, who has had to give up her life of artistic pursuits on a beautiful farm. And so begins what becomes a wonderful love story-thriller concerning two people in the end times. Older readers will love this book for its small and large truths having to do with age, aging, devotion, courage, and love; younger readers will find in those truths a rare window into the hearts of two elders of great humanity and life. Moving, witty and humorous at moments, suspenseful, lyrical--this novel hits on all cylinders. --Joanna Higgins

Roberts "Mysteries of Soldiers' Grove" explores the greater mysteries off love and death in the form of a romance between two people with stories to tell. The novel finds them straining at the limitations of an assisted living facility, and the structure of story, narrated by each of them in turn, shows them to be completely complimentary to each other while at the same time with little in common. Cyril brings to the book a unique personality who has spent his days researching thumbnail biographical sketches of everyone from emperors to baseball players. They are seemingly random until he meets Louise, who seems to understand his curious hobby. She has one bigger story, that of a war bride from France tucked into the Wisconsin countryside and making the most of what could have been a loveless marriage. The author carefully develops their relationship until they are strong enough to put it to the test of a run-in with a serious criminal. The reader finds a very convincing love affair between two memorable characters who seem to get younger as the story unfolds.

Wouldn't it nice if we were to encounter an entirely new experience that we can later sit back and savor. This wonderful book introduces us to two elder citizens and their escapades. It will be a while before I forget this book.
