2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written but as a crime novel it's a little disappointing By ken This is apparently book 4 in a series. I've not read any of the others ao I was going in cold. I have to admit that the formatting put me off. The use of dropped Capitals at the beginning of each chapter doesn't work properly on my Kindle. The capital itself appearing on or two lines below the opening text. I was expecting a crime novel with a crime, investigation and resolution. I didn't get it. There was no definite crime until halfway through the book. The first half of the book is taken up with Jesse's struggle to survive a huge storm and to keep his job. There is nothing wrong with that, and it is well done, but it isn't what I expect from a crime novel. My other disappointment was the ending I can accept a crime novel where the villain gets away with it. I can accept a crime novel where the villain is arrested. What I have difficulty with is a crime novel in which the actual perpetrator is not identified. Unfortunately, that is what we get with this book. We have two or three suspects and we are presented with the motives and left to decide what happens. If all that is to be revealed in the next book, the reader should be made aware that this is part of a continuing drama..

More from our "ex-con with a heart" By Mariam Brooks I guess, I'm just a Jesse Damon fan because once again the "ex-con with a heart" has snagged mine. His devotion to children and always trying to do what is right, despite his odd and unusual circumstances always hooks me. He has a knack for trouble finding him and it seems he is always a few steps away from being locked back up and finishing his "backup time." This book like all the others was a quick read and I liked the fact, he didn't get locked up, as much in this book. Perhaps, there is hope that the detectives will learn Jesse is really one of the good guys after all. I hope there are more books to come. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

So many things were thrown at Jesse, from the storm and flooding that leaves him homeless, to someone at his work doing his best to throw him under the bus, to problems with his "sort-of-girlfriend." I sometimes wonder how he can keep on going with so much negativity in his life, but he manages to pull through with a little help from his friends. I keep cheering for a happy ending and am anxious for the next book in the series. I was provided a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. I hope it is helpful for both the writer and the readers.
