The time of The Circles of Odin is early September, 1929, after Skeen’s case of the Daedàlus Society in July and before he discovers in November a Nazi Bund in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco, Skeen’s main venue of his adventures. This ninth title in the Skeen detective series pits the formidable sleuth against a group of Nazi-affiliated cultists who wish to bring about the resurrection of an ancient, storied culture for which there is little archeological evidence, but on which is based the material for scholarly volumes of legend and mythology. His chief nemesis is an organization called The Sons and Daughters of Thule. To bring about the reestablishment of Thule, agents of the Sons and Daughters resort to murder, and target the wealthy of Nob Hill for sacrifices to the Norse god, Odin. An attempt to “offer” Skeen, a resident of Nob Hill, on that altar of sacrifice fails. In trying to identify the elusive killers, Skeen wades into the bizarre world of cultists, rituals, Gothic fantasies, and encounters the ruthless, schizophrenic, and mad believers in the legends of Thule.

When evil hides behind a mask of "normalcy" By Lindamarion The Shadow may have known "what evil lurks in the hearts of men", but Edward Cline's detective hero Cyrus Skeen can identify the bizarre irrationalities that lurk in the minds of certain men, driving them to such acts of evil. When Skeen begins to uncover a bloodthirsty Nordic-myth-based cult with Nazi connections he is aghast at the mystical savagery hidden behind facades of respectability and harmless eccentricity. Cline's portrayal of the dualistic mentality of the dedicated cultist whose mask of normalcy hides a "secret life" as an avenger of mythological paradigmns is spot-on and soberingly accurate portrayal that reminds the reader that crime is not random, and murderous ideas matter when innocent victims cross the paths of such fanatical "believers".

SPOILER ALERT Be warned that this review may reveal a little too much info about the mystery.Ed Cline is at it again with a ninth Cyrus Skeen detective novel. This time the brainy and handsome Skeen is up against unhinged Nazi cultists out on a sacrificial killing spree in a ritzy San Francisco neighborhood. This story is an eye-opening, fun read that will take you on an emotional roller coaster. There's a chapter that is downright scary and will make your skin crawl. But don't worry humor is sprinkled through out many of the chapters, and the cherry on top is the very romantic and evocative scenes between Skeen and his lovely wife Dylis. Whether you're looking for a provocative mystery, suspense or a little romance, Cline's novel will satisfy.

Insightful By Teresa Hermiz In this latest Detective Skeen novel Cline gives us first person insight into the thinking of each of the main characters. And does it in a way that keeps the action fast paced. As someone else has said there really is no such thing as a random crime. This is one of his best Skeen stories.
