Who of us, at one time or another, hasn't wondered if we are alone in the universe? Mitch Wilde never had until a failed attempt at pulling an arrow out of his best friend Jack’s shoulder began a string of strange and unexpected events in the small Pacific Northwest Town of Outlaw River. Mitch is challenged in ways he never dreamed when Native Americans start vanishing throughout the region and re-appearing in strange places on horseback. In addition, who are the uninvited strangers ransacking some of their homes? Added to this, Jack has taken to odd nocturnal treks. Jasper, an eccentric neighbor, is making Mitch question long held beliefs. The local sheriff releases hostility he has held against Mitch since high school and something—nobody wants to call them UFOs—has just crashed into several surrounding lakes. Can Mitch keep himself out of jail, figure out what the strange entities emerging from the lake are, and protect the beautiful life he and his wife Mabey worked so hard to create? Finally, can Mitch help his eccentric neighbor save the residents of Outlaw River before it's too late? Review Mike Walters' debut novel offers an apocalyptic twist with the past. Inspired by his captivation of the History channel's Ancient Aliens, "his love of Native American culture and passion for the Pacific Northwest," Walters' third person narrative zeroes in on Mitch Wilde, the protagonist and small town outdoor photographer. "Red City Review"Review Small Press Bookwatch: July 2015James A. Cox, Editor-in-ChiefMidwest Book Review The Fiction Shelf Critique: An original and impressively well written novel, "The Outlaw River Wilde" is a deftly crafted and highly entertaining story by an author who will leave his readers looking eagerly toward his next effort. "The Outlaw River Wilde" is an especially recommended addition to community library General Fiction collections. The first in a new series, The Outlaw River Wilde is a hodgepodge of ancient lore, government conspiracy, and science fiction. The subtitle of the book, An Ancient Aliens Inspired Novel, might make you think of the History Channel's Ancient Aliens show, and you would be correct with that connection. Only instead of mysteries surrounding pyramids and ancient hieroglyphs, this book takes place somewhere in the U.S. Pacific Northwest along the fictitious Outlaw River, and focuses on missing American Indians, glowing arrows, and strange phenomenon. Mike Walters | Paperback | 2015 | 320ppThe story begins with Mitch Wilde as he is biking down a trail along the river. After a rough spill, he's nearly pegged by a strange, glowing arrow. Back at home during a neighborhood cookout, his best friend Jack is hit with a similar arrow which glows and disappears into his body. Jack survives, but he's changed. Aside from his nonsensical babble from time to time, it's still Jack walking around so it's hard to convince others that something is seriously wrong with Jack.Wilde's outlet for venting is his journal. He regularly records everything, including the things he can't mention in public without people looking at him a bit funny. It's also a good literary device that creates summaries every so often."No one in the mainstream media saw these crazy events coming. At least no one who was talking about it with the media. I am sure I could go back and find some bloggers who were close to guessing, out of luck, but none had piqued anyone's interest at the time. The Mayan calendar may have been wrong about December 22, 2012, or at least the way many of the 'experts' interpreted it. Nonethless, the world, at least as we know it appears to be ending. Things are a-changing. No doubt about it."Enter Jasper, Wilde's eccentric, conspiracy-theorist neighbor. Jasper believes there's something strange going on in the neighborhood as well, but he's a bit more informed. Jasper opens Wilde's eyes to things that were not beyond his comprehension, but were beyond what he thought was possible. As things get more and more bizarre with strange sightings of Indians in full regalia on horseback, shapeshifters, UFOs, obvious government cover ups, and daily reports of missing Indians, Wilde and Jasper set out to document their findings.Aside from the mystery of the seemingly hostile events that have been popping up, I really like the addition of another antagonist thrown into the mix. Sheriff Gunther is a bully who carries a deep resentment for Wilde stemming from a high school altercation. When the source of his disdain is revealed, you almost feel bad for poor ol' Gunther - almost. But his constant desire to bring Wilde down, and his juvenile attempts to do so, casts out those feelings of pity pretty quickly. Not much is revealed about the mysterious happenings and the reader is left with a 'to be continued' scenario right after a 'wait, what?' event. I would have liked to have seen some clarification of the strange events before heading to book two but I suppose that's the hook that will get you to keep flipping pages. Great character development, likable characters to boot, and a mystery that just yearns to be solved.

What would you do if spooky things started happening in YOUR community?Read the OutLaw River Wilde to see what it could be like By Gloria Antypowich I too believe that we are not the only ones in the universe--so this was an easy book for me to get interested in. As strange things started happening, aside from reading to enjoy the book, I began to ask myself how I would react if those kind of things began to happen in our neighbourhood. I have to believe that even though I would be thoroughly fascinated, my fear of the unknown would override my curiosity. This was a great read and I enjoyed it right up until the last page. The truth is, I was stunned at how it ended. I enjoy cliff hangers, but this book ended so abruptly that, as a reader, I felt cheated. That is why I am giving it 4 stars!
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a small town in beautiful southern Oregon By Marion Strange things are happening in Outlaw River, a small town in beautiful southern Oregon. Mitch Wilde, professional photographer, seems to be in the right place, on several occasions, to observe what-appear-to-be-impossible events. First, he is shot by an arrow while riding his bike in the hills, but the wound quickly heals itself and disappears. Later, his friend Jack is also shot by an arrow and miraculously heals but seems somehow changed. And these aren't the only weird happenings. At the same time, irascible neighbor Jasper approaches Mitch to share some of his research into what is going on in their region, and in the world. Of course, Mitch must investigate while protecting his family and friends. This page-turner keeps the reader engaged until the last page.

By Grady Harp California author Mike Walters is originally from Oregon - the cornerstone for his debut novel that admixes his fascination of watching Ancient Aliens on the History channel, is love of Native American culture and a passion for the Pacific Northwest. He is a Director of Marketing & Product at Auto-Graphics, Inc. based in Ontario, CA, a company that makes software for Libraries. He adds "I am very fortunate to work in an industry that has a meaningful impact on society. It makes going to work each and every day enjoyable. I mean who doesn't think we need, and who doesn't love, libraries?" After high school he used his passion for photography as a photographer in the United States Air Force. Now he turns his attention to writing books - a fine adjunct to his work with libraries!Mike makes an immediate connection with his reader in his synopsis of his first book: `Who of us, at one time or another, hasn't wondered if we're alone in the universe? Mitch Wilde never had until a failed attempt at pulling an arrow out of his best friend Jack's shoulder began a string of strange and unexpected events in the small Pacific Northwest Town of Outlaw River. When Native Americans start vanishing throughout the country and re-appearing in strange places on horseback, Mitch is challenged in ways he never dreamed. In addition, who are the uninvited strangers ransacking some of their homes? Added to this, Jack has taken to odd nocturnal treks. The local sheriff releases hostility he has held against Mitch since high school and something--nobody wants to call them UFOs--has just crashed into several surrounding lakes. Can Mitch keep himself out of jail? Can Mitch figure out what the strange entities emerging from the lake are and why? Can Mitch protect the beautiful life he and his wife Mabey worked so hard to create? Finally, can Mitch help his eccentric neighbor save the residents of Outlaw River before it's too late?'And if those question and preamble don't encourage you to read this story, then perhaps a love of aliens and science fiction and the mysticism of the Native Americans that brew throughout this book will be the hook. He brings on his main character Mitch Wilde in a way that we know him fairly well form page one: `This location on the river-trail was one of his favorite spots with its serene views. The trail held a slight downward grade, a little wider than the rest of the path and packed firm, allowing for a smooth ride. Mitch placed an index finger on each brake lever in anticipation. He couldn't afford a serious wreck, knowing his body wouldn't heal as he approached fifty. Irritated with the way his helmet was sitting, he slowed slightly and reached up with his right hand, which was a mistake. He should have just stopped. His brain registered something from the corner of his right eye. What's that? Something flashed in front of him, stung his shoulder and tore the fabric. It distracted Mitch for a nanosecond. His front tire caught a tree root a touch wrong and then stuck in a small rut in the compacted clay soil. He broke one of his biking rules --pulling on the left brake lever only, which controlled the front brakes. The front heel locked for a fraction of a second. That was all it took...Why had he wrecked? Something hit him, but what? Leaning to investigate his condition, he heard something across the river. It sounded like a horse, which was odd. He'd never seen a horse on this trail.' It is this kind of terse writing that reassures us that we are in for not only a fine story but also an introduction to a writer who is practicing his trade well.Outdoor adventure, Native American culture and aliens with a hefty dollop of odd investigative constructs - all combine to create a very impressive debut.
