Florence (A Cozy Mystery)
Book Three in the Dave Slater Mystery Novel SeriesWhen a little old man is found dead in his home, DS Dave Slater assumes he was simply the victim of a tragic accident. He lived alone, after all, and didn’t seem to have any living relatives. But after some strange occurrences at the old man’s home, Slater finds himself probing deeper. He soon discovers that someone seems to be looking for something – but what was the lonely old man hiding, and why is someone so desperate to find it? And then there’s Florence – a ghost-like figure who is occasionally spotted around town in the early hours of the morning. Slater can’t shake off the feeling she is linked in some way, but how, and why?
A fun mysteryNot quite police procedural, and not quite cozy mystery, the Dave Slater Mystery Series is a series that has a sense of humour and doesn’t take itself too seriously. If that’s the sort of mystery you like, you need look no further.

About the Author Even at an early age, Peter felt very much like the proverbial square peg being forced into a round hole. This resulted in the creation of a Grammar School drop-out who then drifted through a succession of unfulfilling jobs, finally ending up in a totally unsuitable role which eventually sapped his energy and self-confidence. There followed a brief foray into self-employment (not a good idea for someone lacking in self-confidence!) which ended in total financial melt-down, a mountain of debt, and a lapse into depression. Faced with the fact that he’d never be happy as he was, Peter finally decided he had no intention of continuing that way, and things just had to change. This was achieved by closing the door on his old life and starting over. Fast forward a few years and you find a man transformed, his newly found positive attitude enabling him to find new partner (now wife), Mary, who shares his belief that dreamers should be encouraged and not denied. He first wrote, (under the name Peter Ford), and self-published , several short books about the life changing benefits of positive thinking. Now, completely free of the hindrance of worrying about what other people think, he’s blissfully happy writing the D.S. Dave Slater mystery novels and what he calls the ‘digital fiction marmite’ (people tend to love it or hate it!) that is the Alfie Bowman Novella series. Peter and Mary recently completed a shared dream when they married and moved to a beautiful region of Wales where they spend much of their spare time walking their three dogs, and relaxing and having fun with friends. They believe they are living proof that you should never give up on your dreams, because it’s never too late!

Ford as a writer is that his style is very natural, He captures the essence of his characters without overworking the detail. His plots are well thought out and keep the reader fully engaged. Being from England originally, he captures the character and mannerisms so very well.Florence is a well constructed mystery that appears effortless but manages to be engaging at the same time. Do yourself a favor and read this novel. If you're not familiar with DS Slater, start with book 1 of the series "Death of a Temptress" and work your way through the novels to this one.

Don't jump in on this one make sure you read them all in order, its a pleasure getting to know them and Jane Jolly, well I wish she was my friend. The only truly bad thing is I don't see a 4th installment. And we left Cindy floating in back character purgstory, so I'm hopefull a other book will be forthcoming. Its not brain surgery, its pretty nice to almost figure things out yourself then BAM everything changes!

By Leapyear A personal aside, then on with it: , in "Florence" {a delight} I have encountered yet another example of a book of crime fiction that seems to end, or stop, too soon. Every writer these days seems to include a "Prologue". Might I suggest the reinstatement of the "Epilogue"?Regardless, this ENTIRELY WORTHWHILE AND DELICIOUS series is BACK ON TRACK, and with a VENGENCE! the "Slater/Norman books are simply MARVELOUS, Beginning to hasty-end. Book Three; 'Florence", was a PARTICULAR JOY to read, WITH every single page offering insights both human and procedural. The lead characters just get better and better (at police work) as well as at being the fully-formed, very entertaining characters they continue to be! The mystery THIS time begins with a "sad death", seemingly from natural causes, then just expands and expands, much to the surprise OF even of out heroes, Slater and Norman Norman, INTO A BREATH-taking lay clever novel, taking us hither and yon, all appropriately and with the reader's eager participation and anticipation, all the while drawing in many OTHER fully-developed characters who all have a stake, ultimately, in this abundantly and satisfyingly complex mystery. Mr. Ford writes brilliantly and, with one disappointing incident (see my rather over-heated review of Book Two, "A Coincidence"), he seriously just gets better and better and better. The fact that he manages, seamlessly, to weave appropriate humor throughout his books, mostly in the way our unlikely heroes, Slater and "Norman Normam", relate to each other; is both a highly unlikely and delightfully unique aspect of Mr. Ford's novels, AND SOMETHING I particularly enjoy; a true Odd Couple, Slater and Norman Norman bring out the best in each other (as well as showcasing the best of Mr. Ford's very tasty, not-at-all-just-merely-expositional dialogue). Mr. Ford is a keeper. A find. A DISCOVERY! A born story-teller who never loses focus on the matter at hand, while never being a slave to it, serving important, necessary peeks into his character's rather stunted private lives {coppers HAVE no private lives, a fact Mr. Ford acknowledges but does not belabor}. I am THRILLED to have found him {although the pin-upesque, semi-pornographic cover of his first book nearly derailed me and made me look elsewhere}. The covers and titles of these oft-self-published books do indeed play a huge part in a reader's decision to give them a go, particularly with how every book these days is the first {or 14th} in a series. But, The Kindle makes it so easy for a reader to follow a hunch; "Hmmm. THAT looks/sounds interesting!" And, that was precisely how I stumbled upon Mr. Ford {with Kindle's constant badgering that it's "just what you're looking for!" But, rarely has Kindle's logorhythms mislead me, while always informing me what of what YOU lot, other readers, have ALSO been reading. Thusly, I trust YOU, as well, as rarely am I lead astray!) Regarding Mr. Ford, and the writing of his delightful novels, he is shaping up to be something of a Mystery Master already! Knowing just when and how to reveal JUST enough of a clue as to where his stories are headed to keep me obsessively reading-until-4:00-in-the-morning-despite-the-breakfast-meeting-I-idiotically-scheduled-for-7:30-the-next-morning-at-which-I-am-meant-to-appear-all-rested-and-bright-eyed-as-I-droop-pitifully-into-my-porridge}, AND, he has created his own UNIQUE WORLD within which his characters most comfortably reside. I will watch P.F. Ford's career, all trust regained, and go wherever he wants to take me, knowing I am in good hands. A special treat: I love that his characters, coppers, bosses, et, al, freely admit it when they haven't got a CLUE what's going on. It both humanizes them and makes them reliable guides to a-perfectly-paced, beautifully unfolding mystery. Good for you, Mr. Ford! These books cannot be as much of a breeze to write as they are to read, and the kind of effortless you achieve is, I know, VERY EFFORTFUL! Just PLEASE keep at it! I am no where NEAR ready to say Good-bye to Slater and Norman, nor to your bounteous gifts as a spinner of tales! I shall be sure to recommend you 'round, even purchasing hard copies as gifts. For gifts they truly are.
