Unfortunately, the commotion becomes an opportunity for an attempt on the mayor's life by a hit man known as the Messenger.This is the second piece I've read in the world of J.A. Konrath, but the first from this author. I liked the mix of humour and action, and as an introduction to Bill Roberts this made me want to read more. I already have 'Paralyzer,' which stars both Bill Roberts and J.A. Konrath's Lt. Jack Daniels, loaded on my kindle, and look forward to getting into a longer work with these characters.The story is fast, lots of action, and well placed humour, and is a great start to the Bill Roberts saga.

By Maria An enjoyable, fast paced read.This is a 15K word short story about a planned bomb attack on a hotel conference. Suspense and tension are built well by the use of short chapters alternating between the main characters points of view. The writing is sharp and crisp and includes all the important details in the hours leading up to the bomb's detonation (or not!).I often find without the length of a full novel characters are not fully developed. Payton gave some of his characters odd little quirks that worked well to bring them to life in a short time and and also added humour to the story.Overall a solid well-constructed story I recommend to fans of shorter stories.
