He meets women. He gains their trust. He kills them. That's all London police detective Maeve Kerrigan knows about the man she is hunting. Three women have been strangled in their homes, and it appears to be the work of the same sadistic killer. With no sign of break-ins, every indication shows that the women let their attacker in willingly. The victims' neighbors and friends don't seem to remember anything unusual or suspicious, and Maeve is almost at a loss about how to move forward with the investigation.

Then the evidence starts to point to a shocking suspect: DCI Josh Derwent, Maeve's partner on the police force. Maeve refuses to believe he could be involved, but how well does she really know him? Secrets Derwent has long kept locked away are coming back to haunt him, and the more Maeve learns about her partner's past, the more difficult it is to dismiss him as a suspect. After all, this is hardly the first time Derwent's been accused of murder.

Jane Casey returns with her most outstanding novel yet in The Stranger You Know, a taut thriller and an intimate portrayal of complicated, all-too-human characters.

The Stranger You Know (Maeve Kerrigan Novels), by Jane Casey

From Booklist *Starred Review* A serial killer is targeting single women in London, and Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is included in the investigating team. But her colleague, politically incorrect and misogynistic Detective Inspector Josh Derwent, is definitely excluded: the murderer’s MO of strangling his victims and removing their eyes echoes the killing of Derwent’s first love, Angela Poole, 20 years earlier. Although Derwent was cleared of that crime and still tries to solve it, he fits the profile of the current killer and is considered a suspect. But not by Maeve, who disobeys orders from the top not to communicate with Derwent, with whom she has a prickly relationship, as she probes the cold-case Poole murder. Although one aspect of the killings is wrapped up rather hastily, this is more focused than the three earlier entries in the Maeve Kerrigan series, all solid police procedurals with exceptionally well-drawn characters whose relationships continue to develop in each entry. Derwent, a brilliant copper in Maeve’s eyes despite his numerous personality defects, serves as a foil and balance for her, and, with him at the center here, this novel attains further complexity in the interplay of the police-force members. Prime crime fiction. --Michele Leber

Review

“[A] dramatic, expertly crafted thriller.” ―Entertainment Weekly (Must List)

“[An] exciting thriller…Casey's growing fan base will snatch up the latest entry in what has turned out to be a can't-wait-for-the-next-one series.” ―Library Journal

“Maeve Kerrigan [is] a fascinating and plausible character…She is no superwoman, she lacks supernatural acuity, and she doesn't even have so much as a single dragon tattoo. What she has is persistence, integrity and emotional intelligence, and a very deft way of insinuating herself into a reader's affections.” ―The Irish Independent (UK)

“The Maeve Kerrigan [novels are] all solid procedurals with exceptionally well-drawn characters whose relationship continue to develop in each entry. Derwent, a brilliant copper in Maeve's eyes despite his numerous personality defects, serves as a foil and balance for her, and, with him at the center here, this novel attains further complexity in the interplay of the police-force members. Prime crime fiction.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“A captivating police procedural heavy on characterization that will keep readers up late into the night. Maeve is a character to love; she's easy to relate to as she holds her own with humor and snappy dialogue. The voice of the novel is unique and captivating.” ―RT Book Reviews (4½ stars)

The first book was a great start, but seemed a bit clichéd, and there was a lot of introductory material. The second and third were even better, with a lot of character development and a more complex case. The pacing of The Stranger You Know is terrific – I had a hard time putting the book down. The narrative is a great blend of character development and action. I really wanted to know what would happen next, both with the crime and the regular characters.Maeve Kerrigan is a Detective Constable with some complicated relationships. She is commitment shy but in a relationship with another cop, a terrific guy who is not afraid to say “I love you” even though Maeve won’t reply in turn. Rob is out of the country on a work-related trip most of this book, so the focus is not on their romance but on Maeve’s relationship with coworkers.Maeve has Irish parents but works in London, and as a woman in a male-dominated field, she feels like an outsider. She started out hero-worshipping her boss, Chief Superintendent Godley (know as “God” around the office), but has since found out some things about him that sent him tumbling off the pedestal. She could get him fired, and he knows it; although she keeps his secrets, her knowledge affects her interactions with him. She is often paired with Detective Inspector Josh Derwent, who comes off as a jerk and a misogynistic pig. In The Stranger You Know, we get to know Derwent a lot better. He is taken off a case and isn’t happy about it. There is a serial killer in London, and Derwent was the prime suspect in a similar case 20 years before. Maeve and Derwent spend a lot of time together in this book, in challenging situations that force them to get to know each other better. We are thrown a lot of red herrings, but I expect that in a mystery series. The investigation moves relentlessly on, with Maeve right in the middle, disobeying orders and taking unlikely sides. There’s a plot twist at the end that will no doubt play into future books in the series. I can’t wait.If you like British police procedurals and well-paced crime thrillers with lots of character development, I recommend Jane Casey. Although one could pick up The Stranger You Know without having read the first three, I recommend starting with The Burning.I read an advance reader copy provided by Netgalley.

Fourth time's the charm By Rich Stoehr Jane Casey just keeps on getting better and better at this, and 'The Stranger You Know' might be her best book yet.Maeve Kerrigan, a Detective Constable on the London police force, has grown a lot over the last four books. She's more confident in the face of the blatant sexist attitudes of her partner, Josh Derwent. In 'The Stranger You Know,' though, Kerrigan is brought in to investigate a series of grisly murders and mutilations, while Derwent himself is being cut out of the investigation...because he's a suspect. In her mannerisms, her faults, her strengths, and her quirks, Kerrigan is a character that's both familiar and unique. In this book, we see Casey's growing confidence as a writer too. Here she takes the character dynamic she's spent three books shaping and shakes it up, giving more depth to Kerrigan and Derwent and each of the supporting characters. We get to see more of Kerrigan on her own, not depending so much on her boyfriend to come and save the day. Also, Casey depends less on gimmicky writing here (like the odd perspective shifts of her previous books) and more on a steady, consistent style that keeps you reading.I read most of 'The Stranger You Know' in the space of a single day, and I was left both satisfied and looking forward to the next story. Simply put, I can't wait to to see what's next for Maeve Kerrigan.

Wonderful Series that Delivers By Ria Darling I just started the Maeve Kerrigan series this summer and I read them in order (The Burning, the Reckoning, The Last Girl & The Stranger You Know) and I'm awed. So many British series with female detectives promise so much, specifically that they're the next Jane Tenneyson series you've been waiting for, but Casey delivers a terrific character and mystery with Kerrigan. As a detective working with Major Crimes for the MET in London, Kerrigan still has a lot to learn-she has to deal with comments from her (male) colleagues, how to be diplomatic with superior officers, and to balance her personal life and work life. It's acknowledged that Kerrigan is talented as a detective but that she has a lot tol learn. This is the 4th in the series and Kerrigan is working through issues with her personal and work partners-while trying to catch a serial killer who strangles single women. I don't want to give too much away but there are internal issues with her boss and colleagues which make this case a challenge. While I have read the series, I have to say I think this one (as opposed to The Last Girl) is the easiest to pick up without any background on the series
