An old case makes Detective Inspector Louisa Smith some new enemies in this spellbinding second installment of New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Haynes’s Briarstone crime series that combines literary suspense and page-turning thrills.

Ten years ago, 15-year-old Scarlett Rainsford vanished while on a family holiday in Greece. Was she abducted, or did she run away from her severely dysfunctional family? Lou Smith worked the case as a police constable, and failing to find Scarlett has been one of the biggest regrets of her career. No one is more shocked than Lou to learn that Scarlett has unexpectedly been found during a Special Branch raid of a brothel in Briarstone.

Lou and her Major Crime team are already stretched working two troubling cases: nineteen-year-old Ian Palmer was found badly beaten; and soon after, bar owner Carl McVey was found half-buried in the woods, his Rolex and money gone. While Lou tries to establish the links between the two cases, DS Sam Hollands works with Special Branch to question Scarlett. What happened to her? Where has she been until now? How did she end up back here? And why is her family—with the exception of her emotionally fragile younger sister, Juliette—less than enthusiastic about her return?

When another brutal assault and homicide are linked to the McVey murder, Lou’s cases collide, and the clues all point in one terrifying direction. As the pressure and the danger mount, it becomes clear that the silent, secretive Scarlett holds the key to everything.

Behind Closed Doors: A Novel (Briarstone), by Elizabeth Haynes

From School Library Journal When a teenager goes missing on a family vacation, the usual questions are raised about whether her disappearance may be due to arguments within the family (running away) or having met a stranger (abduction). With the family of the missing girl being rather close-mouthed about their lives, and the knowledge that she didn't have opportunities to go and meet anyone, the assumption is that she ran away. So when she reappears 10 years later during a raid on a brothel, why won't she tell the police what happened in the intervening years? An even bigger question might be why aren't the family members reuniting now? These are the questions that Detective Louisa Smith hopes to answer, but without much help from either Scarlett or her family. The chapters take place in the present day and through flashbacks, and Scarlett's story and the investigation unfold in surprising ways. The hold human traffickers have on their victims can sometimes trump familial ties, particularly if those ties are frayed from the start. The secrets that the family chooses to keep will shock teens. VERDICT A solid choice for fans of darker mysteries, like those of Carol O'Connell or Gillian Flynn.—Laura Pearle, Miss Porter's School, CT

Review “Harrowing…. Vivid, unsparing prose…. helps make this a haunting, highly disturbing mystery.” (Publishers Weekly)“An involving police procedural with a protagonist who agonizes about maintaining both a committed personal relationship and a demanding career.” (Booklist)“Haynes pulls no punches…. the skillful police work and superb ending make the reading truly worthwhile. Mystery readers will want more Haynes!” (Library Journal)

Bukowsky People often commit unspeakable acts in secret, since they assume that no one knows what goes on "Behind Closed Doors" (Elizabeth Haynes's latest thriller) aside from the abusers and their victims. The author tells the heartbreaking story of fifteen-year-old Scarlett Rainsford, who lives in England with her family. In 2003, Scarlett is on holiday in Rhodes with her parents and thirteen-year-old sister, Juliette. By chance, Scarlett meets a good-looking boy, Nico, and develops a crush on him. She soon fantasizes about running away with Nico (Scarlett loathes her parents), but is reluctant to abandon the emotionally fragile Juliette. Still, she cannot help but dream of a new and happier life than the one she has now.Sadly, our heroine's naiveté with men proves costly. She is abducted and, along with other girls caught up in the net, is forced to do her captors' bidding. After her parents report their daughter's disappearance to the authorities, DCI Louisa Smith and her team of investigators try to pick up Scarlett's trail. Meanwhile, in spite of the humiliation and degradation that she suffers, Scarlett tries to keep her wits about her. Haynes provides relief from all this misery by inserting an engrossing subplot about Lou and her boyfriend Jason Mercer, a police intelligence analyst. We also learn a bit more about the conscientious DS Sam Hollands, whose memories of a past relationship haunt her during this case."Behind Closed Doors" is a suspenseful, involving, and hard-hitting work of fiction that goes back and forth in time and shows events from various perspectives. The portrait of Scarlett is particularly strong; she is courageous and daring, but her impulsiveness and poor judgment land her in deep trouble. There are a number of loathsome villains in this novel, but we do not learn the full extent of their malevolence until the shocking conclusion. Haynes touches on timely and troubling issues, making us wonder: How can we stop the scourge of human trafficking? Can individuals who have been cruelly exploited ever recover? Elizabeth Haynes avoids tying up her plot too neatly. Instead, she offers a disturbing glimpse of how depraved individuals, for pleasure and profit, subjugate vulnerable young women.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is the follow-up to last year’s UNDER A SILENT MOON. It was with that book that Elizabeth Haynes broke form after a series of stand-alone crime thrillers and began what is now known as the Briarstone crime series. Briarstone is the patch, if you will, of Louisa Smith, who heads up the town’s Major Crime squad. It is evident within the first few pages that this is a book worth waiting for and one that, impossible as it may seem, surpasses its predecessor, which was one of the best mystery novels of 2014.Lou and Major Crime begin BEHIND CLOSED DOORS behind the eight-ball. They are working two disturbing cases consisting of a murder and a brutal assault that may be connected. The murder victim is Carl McVey, a bar owner with some possible ties to the criminal element. His body was discovered partially buried in a wooded area with his valuables gone, apparently taken by his killer. The assault victim is a younger man named Ian Palmer, who also is reputed to be involved with a troubled element. There are few clues in either case, which makes it all the more distressing when one of Lou’s cold cases from a decade ago suddenly rears its head.Fifteen-year-old Scarlett Rainsford had been on a family vacation in Greece when she suddenly vanished. Lou, who was a DC in Major Crime at the time, was charged with investigating the case and flew to Greece, only to run into numerous dead ends, not only from the Greek police but also from the missing girl’s family, whose behavior was considered odd, to say the least. Scarlett was ultimately presumed to be dead, and the case languished. When it is learned in the present that Scarlett is not only alive, but also working in a brothel in Briarstone, the news is electrifying. To make matters more interesting, there appears to be a direct link between Scarlett’s present circumstances and a murder that Lou has been investigating (one that is an unresolved plot thread from UNDER A SILENT MOON). Thanks to some flashbacks that alternate with the narration in the present, the reader learns early on, through information released in excruciating dribs and drabs, how Scarlett happened to go missing. In the present, though, Lou’s colleague, Sam Hollands, attempts to gently coax Scarlett’s story from her. There are many questions to be answered. Where has Scarlett been all this time? Why is the reaction of Scarlett’s parents to her somewhat strange and certainly unexpected return so...unusual? As Lou’s different investigations progress, another violent assault and homicide occur that appear to be tied to the earlier incidents and, against all odds, to Scarlett’s situation as well. As the cases seem to be on an all-but-inevitable collision course, Lou will uncover truths and lies that have lain dormant for years.BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is amazing from beginning to end. I kept waiting for the story to flag or lose energy, or for my jaded self to lose interest. None of that ever happened. Haynes keeps the story complex, but expertly guides readers through the thicket, providing enough revelations to keep everyone happy until the next installment. Jump on this series now, as you will want to catch up with it sooner rather than later.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

Compelling read By Mrs. C reads I enjoyed this second Detective Inspector Louisa Smith book very much but am glad I had read the first one for knowledge of ongoing characters and criminal syndicates. Scarlett's story was compelling--I loved how she never had her spirit broken despite all the terrible things that happened to her--and I hope we might see more of her in the next book.
