Jim Henry Tate is a county constable in the virtually brand new cotton mill village of Boiling Springs, North Carolina. His job has been, he says, mostly to "just walk around and let people see they's some law in the lower part of the county." However, when the village's first ever murder occurs in 1908, things change. Jim Crow, always a village resident, struts through town cawing with feathers ruffled. For the murder victim is white and there is wide spread suspicion that the murderer is black. This means Jim Henry must not only solve a murder, he must deal with racial tension that threatens to boil over into a full-fledged race riot.

A Murder Story Clouded by both Time and Lint By Burn Revnik For anyone interested in this piece of old rural small town America in the South, the background for this novel, this was very enjoyable. Racial issues, as they existed at that point in history are a part of the story's backdrop. They are handled skillfully, yet remind us of the grim hierarchy of wealth, insensitivity, and exploitation as was the case at the time and still is in too many places. Humanity and justice are challenged across the divides - in part due to the tenacity of a lawman who can see through the dust or lint of the cotton mill well enough to make things happen. I enjoyed this tremendously.

By JEan Livermore In the style of Alexander McCall Smith, this book combines the mystery aspect of a murder with wonderful, thoughtful descriptions of the daily lives of people living in a small southern town in 1908, which is dominated by the cotton mill. The town characters--mill owners, employees, and town officials--are well-developed and the description of the town and surrounding area is informative and believable--and all this without sacrificing the suspense of discovering who-done-it.
