From Publishers Weekly The ordinary lives of the long-term, year-round residents of declining far-from-London Cornwall stand out in this weakly plotted mystery by British author Bolitho (Snapped in Cornwall; Plotted in Cornwall; etc.). The author is at her best looking into her characters' hearts, examining their private victories and failings, their frustrated hopes and sordid secrets, amid the alternately harsh and fine weather and spectacular scenery close to Land's End. Artist and photographer Rose Trevelyan's elderly friend, Dorothy Pengelly, lives alone in a remote house with her dog and cat. When Dorothy dies, the police conclude it's a case of suicide, but Rose suspects that someone may have murdered the woman for her valuable paintings and furniture. When Rose's sometime lover, Detective Inspector Jack Pearce, takes her misgivings seriously and investigates, he discovers mysteries in the backgrounds of several local citizens, including Dorothy's sons. One son has dropped out of society, while the avaricious wife of another son has caused him to cease seeing his mother. Then Rose starts receiving threatening phone calls. None of this is terribly exciting, but then the author's strengths lie elsewhere. Readers will come away with insights into the variety of ways the people of Penzance and St. Ives talk, think and relate to one another from Bolitho's portrait of an area of England that has a long and honorable tradition as a potent setting.

About the Author JANIE BOLITHO enjoyed a variety of careers - psychiatric nurse, debt collector, working for a tour operator, a book-maker s clerk - before becoming a full time writer. She died of breast cancer in late 2002.

Lovely book set in Cornwall By Laurie Fletcher These little books by Janie Bolitho are not going to win awards, but she paints a portrait of a likeable, middle-aged lady who is also quite an interesting character in the context of these stories. I think I like her because her choice of subject is usually counter to the usual mystery fodder and also because her characterization of the Cornish locals in her stories is so lovingly drawn. These won't keep you awake at night, rethinking the story line and wondering "who", but you also won't look back at these as anything less than the good use of an afternoon or two.

Piscturesque novel By Srdjan Pesic Late Janie Bolitho belonged to a esteemed group of British mystery writers, who through years produced solid and enjoyable books. Her efforts didn't earn awards or the recomendations of snobby critics. What they managed to do, time after time, is to give pleasure to numerous readers. Her series, set in picturesque Cornwall is full of delightful descriptions and colorful characters. This novel is an unashamed cozy with an oldfashioned feel. The, far too early dead author and the books that people don't write anymore. More is the pity.
