Amy Maxwell still hasn’t caught up on laundry, her daughter Allie is still acting like a rebellious teen (and schooling her younger sister in that art), the two boys are still causing her to rip her hair out by the roots with their antics, and her husband Roger is STILL sitting in his arm chair uselessly engrossed in a reality show marathon. To add to her already mounting stress, Amy has decided to go back to school to get a degree! Yeah, yeah…she’s GLUTTON for punishment. And so Amy’s new quest for a career in law enforcement, coupled with the Seven Deadly sins, puts Amy in a position she’s never been before…the back of a trunk, bound and gagged. That’s right…Wrath, Greed, Lust, Sloth, Envy, Pride, and Gluttony are the reason she’s in her current predicament. And what’s more, they’re not all her sins, but the sins of everyone else around her including her oh so perfect sister, Beth. Find out how the Seven Deadly Sins lead Amy into a tangled web of mistakes and missteps (and the trunk of a Chevy) in this hilarious sequel to “The 8 Mistakes of Amy Maxwell”.

Heather Balog has quickly become one of my re-read authors. This story was unique, fun, entertaining and on my list to be re-read soon. I was connected to Amy in the first chapter as she fought to get her teenage daughter to just get dressed, help out and make it to the bus on time. Her husband is pacing around demanding to know why he doesn’t have any clean pants to wear for work. A son who won’t get out of bed and when he does he smells like pee. Her two other kids who are running around wanting breakfast and pouring juice all over the floor. Yes this is Amy’s average day usually, but this book starts out as she is entering into a new chapter of her life………college. In book one Amy and her daughter Allie had been held hostage and Amy saved the day (remember I haven’t read that book but this is what was referenced in this one). It is clear her sister Beth is not only a high society snob; she has made a career of pointing out Amy’s faults and bad mothering habits. All she wants to do is make it to her first Criminal Justice class on time, understand the professor and dream of a man named Jason. The first day of college doesn’t go as planned, meeting strange people, being humiliated by the professor and being late, very late, she walks out of the class feeling defeated. Her family thinks she is crazy to go back to college at her age, the books are expensive, she can’t manufacture enough time to do it all but this is her dream and she is ready to chase that dream, hell or high water. The author uses the 7 deadly sins to explain how she gets into a dangerous situation that wasn’t even of her own making. All she was supposed to do was pick up her niece from daycare as a favor to Beth, which was a blessing because she was afraid the favor would be taking her parents to a doctor’s appointment, who had time for that? When the “deadly” secret comes out about one of her family members she is left in the trunk of a car, her life on the line and no one knows they are there. It makes her re-evaluate her life, her relationship with her husband and kids, how she is going to look in her coffin and she does it in one of the most hilarious ways possible…….she is what you would call a squirrel chaser. What starts out as a plan to do something, even rescuing herself, it takes about ten turns to different subjects till she pulls herself back in to the original thought. She is sarcastic, witty, crazy and had me laughing out loud so many times I woke my husband up in the middle of the night while reading. Even though there is a crime being committed the author kept the humor front in center.I really enjoyed the book, but I was mentally exhausted once I was done. If you are a squirrel chaser in real life you will become addicted to Amy. For me, I am not like that so I was tired just watching her brain goes in a 1000 different directions all at once. My OCD kicked in and I wanted to climb in the kindle and clean up this thought process mess. Even with that, I still want to read book one and any other book in this series. I was having a stressful day when I started this book and Heather Balog made the day better with Amy. I laughed, smiled and was able to just forget about reality. I would really recommend this to anyone who just needs a reason to smile, feel happy and chase some squirrels for a few hours.

Review: 'Amy Maxwell & the 7 Deadly Sins' by Heather Balog By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" After quite a turbulent year (which included being kidnapped together with her daughter and then saving the day), Amy Maxwell is determined to get a grip on everyday things such as the household, her three children, her lazy husband and her own life. After her adventurous experiences she has even decided to go back to college to have one foot in the door of the law enforcement world, which is a dream of hers. However, Amy's first day at college isn't the biggest success and before she knows it, she has once again managed to get herself into all kinds of trouble. Only this time it happens to be together with her perfect older sister Beth. Question is, will Amy be able to save the day a second time around or is she simply in too deep?'Amy Maxwell and the 7 Deadly Sins' is the second part of author Heather Balog's 'Amy Maxwell' series and the sequel to 'The 8 Mistakes of Amy Maxwell.' I personally always prefer to start a book series at the very beginning, but I didn't even know this was a sequel until I was already about 50 pages into the novel. While I did feel I had missed some important information because of this (such as the fact that protagonist Amy and her daughter are kidnapped in the first part), the author provides the reader with details in order to also be able to read this second part as a stand-alone. I liked the author's writing style; it was well-paced, easy to read and quite funny in places.Amy leads a chaotic life which gets her into the craziest situations. Sometimes you have characters in books that manage to find themselves in all kinds of trouble, no matter what they do, and Amy is definitely one of those characters. At times it did all seem a bit far-fetched, but I guess that's also what made the novel fun to read. Sometimes Amy annoyed me a bit with the things she did and said, but she also made me laugh and I didn't want to stop reading until I knew how the story would end. 'Amy and the 7 Deadly Sins' was quite an entertaining and crazy read; not one everyone will enjoy, but also one some people will love. I'm glad I got the chance to be introduced to Heather Balog's writing and I can't help but admit I'm quite curious what Amy will manage to get herself into next!

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as much, teared up as much, or hung onto every turn of the page as though it might be my last.Amy doesn’t mince words. While reading about her chaotic life in "The 8 Mistakes of Amy Maxwell," the one that revolves around four unruly children and one husband who she could easily count as another child in the house, you discover real honesty and depth where parenthood is concerned. You also discover that it's not easy trying to be everything to everyone, and it’s even harder when you feel there’s no one around to support you or to help out in times of need. It’s no surprise that Amy begins an almost sadistic fairy tale fantasy with her neighbor who lives across the street. Jason is handsome, flirtatious, and yet there’s a dark side just waiting to emerge, only adding fuel to Amy’s fantasies. When she discovers the skeletons hiding in his closet and finds herself in danger, it’s then that Amy can see that her fantasies are blurring into reality and not at all in a way she’d expected. While most of "8 Mistakes" is full of comedy and zany moments, one of my favorite scenes is the one where Amy and Jason have a moment together. She has realizations where he’s concerned, and the feeling is mutual. I’ll admit, I got teary-eyed. It was beautifully written and had me eagerly anticipating "Amy Maxwell & the 7 Deadly Sins."You’d think Amy would have learned a few lessons after everything she’d gone through while making her "8 Mistakes." You’d be wrong. In "7 Deadly Sins," we find Amy still deep in the trenches with her family. Her husband is still useless, and she’s still daydreaming about Jason. With everything on her plate, she’s also picked up a few classes at the local college. Sounds harmless, but it ends up the catalyst for another zany adventure that begins with being bound and gagged in the trunk of someone’s car! Amy makes the connection between the predicament she finds herself in and the seven deadly sins that have led her there, and not alone, I might add. Her perfect sister Beth is along for this ride and has a very shady past to go along with it."7 Deadly Sins" was the perfect sequel and just as fun and adventurous. It’s nice to live vicariously through someone else who is living a similar lifestyle (minus the lousy husband; mine is pretty awesome). I have two rambunctious boys of my own to contend with. Heather Balog wrote a fantastic series that can easily be the great escape, even if it’s a few pages at a time (when the kids allow for it). Will Amy ever find a way out of her predicaments? Will the kids ever give her a break, and can she stop thinking about Jason for even a few seconds? Maybe if her husband would ever get off the couch...
