By Eristic Normally, I wouldn't read this type of book but a friend told me about it so I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. The characters are varied and nuanced and situations reveal a complex understanding of human nature and relationships. I came to this book with a bias that it might be gory or superficial and found an author who has the ability to make the characters come alive, even the ones who are already dead. The vignettes of family life are poignant and accurate and I found myself completely caught up in what they were doing. The main character is endearing and vigilant and sufficiently complicated as to be a strong female character without coming off as a unidimensional stereotype. It is obvious the author knows how to write from her diction to her structuring of the story. My favorite character in this book is Justine who is wonderfully awful as the conniving widow. I don't want to spoil the fun by saying too much, but even here Brantley succeeds in making her complex and totally irksome at the same time. A strong debut novel from an author I expect is here to stay. Will there be a second book in the series? I hope so.

I'm not sure whether to call it a cozy mystery or a romantic suspense, as it seems to fit both categories. In the opening chapters I found her protagonist, Becca McCallum a bit wimpy, but Brantley proved her writing skill by showing me how Becca grows and changes as the story progresses. That is the mark of good characterization. Detail is applied with an even hand so I could see the places and the people in the novel without becoming bogged down. Readers who can handle a bit of sexual tension in a book, but prefer that the nitty gritty happens behind closed doors should like this book. Brantley plans further adventures for Becca McCallum as an amateur detective. I look forward to reading about them.

Lawrence A woman's brother, who is a policeman, dies in the line of duty--or did he. His sister, a woman in her twenties senses that something is not quite right. Not a formally trained detective, she starts looking into the circumstances surrounding his death and soon starts turning up a trove of information that leads her ever deeper into finding the truth.Besides the detective being an otherwise ordinary person, we look into her life along the beautiful gulf coast where the author sets the twists and turns of the plot. We look into her life, her loves, and her internal struggles. The story builds and the ending does not disappoint.
