By Grady Harp Pacific Northwest author Jack Patterson writes with the verve that accompanies good journalism: he has written articles for some of our major newspapers such as The New York Times and is the recipient of many journalistic awards. That acumen is evident in his book THE WARREN OMISSIONS (five have dealt with sports, Patterson's obsession since childhood), a mystery thriller with the JFK assassination and controversy at its core. Now Patterson returns to his sports novels with Volume 6 of the Cal Murphy Thrillers - DEAD AND GONE.One of the many positive aspects of Jack Patterson's books is ability to engage the reader from the first paragraph and then sustain that level of interest until the story is complete. Nowhere is that gift more important than in writing mystery thrillers. This is the sixth adventure Jack takes us on in this series. San Francisco newspaper reporter Cal Murphy has as much an eye for solving difficult crimes and seeing through corruption as he has reporting them. He is always involved with sports events and this time the sport is stock car racing. The oily way he opens chapter one is nebulous enough to make us want to find out want this unnamed capped man is doing with a blowtorch in the stock car racing garage. We don't have to wait too long for the mystery to open. As Jack synopsis states, `When popular stock car racer Carson Tanner dies on the track and stuns the motorsports world, reporter Cal Murphy witnesses the event in disbelief. Something seems off to Cal--and his suspicions are confirmed with a cryptic handwritten note stuck into his pocket. How can someone be murdered in plain sight in front of thousands of people--and nobody even know it was happening? As the race circuit moves to Phoenix, Cal races against the clock to uncover who sabotaged Tanner's car--and all upstream against wealthy team owner Ned Davis, who wants to suppress the information; an uncooperative crew full of suspects; and an upstart driver who refuses to let his debut be ruined by such a report. In an effort to expose the killer and help Tanner's grieving widow, Cal faces his greatest fear and must decide how far he's willing to go in order to get justice.'Folded into this mix is enough romance and concern for human reactions to make the story not only filled with aspects that will lure even those readers not particularly involved in the sport of stock car racing - and that is another mark of a good writer: take a subject that may be narrow and a favorite of the author and make it universal. Another winner for the Cal Murphy Thriller series. Grady Harp, April 15

By Veritas Vincit Although I jumped into this series late, and I feel like I would have been better served starting at the beginning, I still thoroughly enjoyed this offering by Jack Patterson. I have been a fan of this type of reporter, scandal, thriller, suspense novel for years, and have also developed quite a liking for a number of modern literary heroes, such as Dirk Pitt and other protagonists who keep coming back, no matter how many times they get knocked down. There is also something rewarding about getting to know a character for an entire series and not having to constantly shift your attention between different authors and characters. I have a feeling that I'll be tracking back through the first few novels of this series now that I've seen Cal Murphy in action.I have dabbled in watching motorsports and stock car racing in the past, but have never had it be in such an important position within a book I read. Frankly, I wouldn't think that world could translate clearly, but Patterson has a masterful pen and a clear dedication to thorough research on whatever subject matter he chooses to include in his writing. It's a sign of a true professional, being able to engage a reader like that, and I must applaud him for delivering an exciting story that kept me guessing until the very end. Although this was hardly a whodunit, the suspense was intense, and I finished it feeling very satisfied. Nicely done - I look forward to reading more.

A Necessary Pit Stop on the Way to the Finish Line By Marta Cheng Popular racing car driver Carson Tanner is favored to win the NASCAR race and with his a cancer-stricken young fan, Ella, cheering him on in the stands, Carson wants to win the race for her. Just when it looks like he’s going to do just that, tragedy strikes in the third last lap when the brakes on his racing car malfunction, sending Carson to his death as his sports car careens into a wall, killing him instantly amid cries from a horror-stricken audience. Cal Murphy, a novice NASCAR reporter subbing for a fellow reporter felled by a heart attack, watches in disbelief, along with everyone else, as Carson is pronounced dead. Later, a man slips a note into his pocket which informs Cal that Carson’s death was no accident. This sets the stage for a dramatic whodunit that combines a tightly-woven storline with believable characters. Dead and Gone introduces readers to the world of NASCAR racing through its devoted fans and groupies and its never-ending supply of quirky characters. It’s a world unlike any other and the author Patterson does a great job capturing the drama and excitement of the racing world. For NASCAR aficionados, the book is like a necessary pit stop on the way to the finish line but for those readers unfamiliar with this chaotic world, there’s plenty of action and suspense to keep them engrossed – even if they don’t know the difference between a lug wrench and a chassis.
