In the college town of Isla Vista, California, small, odd things start happening. Science-geek Nicole notes the crows are leaving. Meg Burdigal can’t find her tabby cat, Schrand. Brian the postman feels uneasy at the rustlings, the shadows he’s seen at the edge of his vision on his delivery route in town. Now Nicole sees fewer and fewer homeless in the park. Using her knowledge of biology and forensics, Nicole searches for answers—but will anyone take the horror she finds seriously? In this unusual thriller, "Watch the Shadows," author Robin Winter explores where the ordinary slams against the extraordinary. “Robin Winter’s 'Watch the Shadows' deftly dances back and forth through the shadow world between the real and unreal, where shadows are the gatekeepers of a nightmare that is all too real.” –Matthew J. Pallamary, author of "Land without Evil" and "Spirit Matters" “'Watch the Shadows' is a wickedly scary book, a haunting reminder that what may seem innocuous could kill, that our best intentions might be deadly. It is a terrific combination of the best and worst of humans and the Other we might not see until it’s too late.” –Lorelei Armstrong, author of "In the Face" “'Watch the Shadows' has the ‘uh-oh’ early warning signs and shocking revelation of danger that one associates with a good classic 1950s horror film. This is an entertaining read, a page-turner with a strong undercurrent of compassion and wisdom, and featuring an engaging young heroine, a budding scientist we’d like to see more of in future books.” –Douglas Nicholas, poet, "Something Red" and "Iron Rose"

The ducks are vanishing from the park, and the rats are disappearing. The disappearance of the rat population is a welcome thing, but the ducks?A homeless man searches through the trash for food. The piece of meat he finds isn’t exactly what he had expected to come across, especially since it costs him his life.Meg works with the homeless population in Isla Vista, California. She comes home one day to find what I call the blob in her house. It looks like a malformed jellyfish, and it stinks. For some reason her dog and cats didn’t run it off, and her cat has disappeared. She has Nicole’s mom, a science teacher, come to look at this monstrosity in her home, but when Nicole and her mom arrive, it has disappeared, leaving behind little evidence that it had ever been there.Nicole sneaks a sample of tabby fur from the bit of goo left behind on Meg’s floor. She sneaks and tests it to see what it is. Will anyone take her horrific findings seriously?Nicole is one intelligent young lady, a science geek. Her dad is a scientist currently working with NASA, and her mom is a microbiologist and a teacher. With such brainy parents, I don’t see how Nicole could be any other way. But Nicole has begun seeing things in the shadows, and she has an uneasy feeling about the plastic shopping bags she sees blowing around town. The way they move just isn’t right.Meg, full of compassion, allows a homeless man to live in her garage so that he can recover from an illness. Religious intolerance rears its ugly head, and a perverted individual comes to life. The identity of the alien creatures in this story took me by surprise, and the thought of these everyday items being inhabited by aliens is truly terrifying. The possibility of the life being sucked out of people and their flesh consumed is enough to give someone nightmares. In this book, the tension builds page by page until it finally explodes into an edge-of-your-seat ending packed with action in a life-threatening situation for more than one of the characters. I found myself clutching the cover of the book and holding onto so tightly that if someone wanted to take it from me, he or she would have had to pry it out of my hands.Robin Winter has a definite gift for writing a creepy story, and it is my hope that she will write many more.I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

All opinions are my own.Robin Winter caught me with the first sentence. I honestly do not think I have ever started to read a book and had the first sentence make me laugh out loud like "Watch the Shadows" did.The story takes place in Isla Vista, California,a college town. Little things start to make Nicole realize that something is not quite right. The homeless community starts to dwindle and Nicole starts to 'investigate' to see what is causing this to start happening. What she finds is not only disturbing; but causes her to wonder if anyone will believe what she is uncovering. This book kept me reading to the very end. I feel you will find the twists and darkness intriguing, to stay the least. Besides Nicole, the other involved characters are Meg Burdigal and Brian, who also notice that strange things are afoot. If you like a bit of darkness in your reading, as well as some mystery and some disturbance; Watch the Shadows by Robin Winter is for you!You can purchase your paperback at the Amazon link below, and start a book that you won't put down until the end!

Scary With a Side of Romance By Amazon Customer If you love reading scary stories, then this book will definitely be right up your alley! One thing is for sure and it doesn't come right out and tell you that they may be aliens, but it implies they are and all I have to say is the way the author describes the way these "things" eat people is both detailed and fascinating. Don't know how authors have such an imagination but it does make the story much more scarier. There are a few side stories as well with the main characters that breaks up some of the scary stuff and makes the book easier to read because it's not all guts and terror.
