A Love Story" reveals its vampireness early in the book By Andreas Martin From the title, when I started reading this book, I didn't know what to expect. I was not really expecting it to be a vampire story, but it is. This is not a spoiler. In contrast to the movie "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" in which the vampires don't make an appearance until about half-way through the movie, "Gowanus, A Love Story" reveals its vampireness early in the book. I like horror fiction and the classic Vampire tales. However with the exception of Stephen King's novels and Ann Rice's "Interview with a Vampire", I mostly left that stuff behind a long time ago and I don't follow any of the current crop of vampire movies, TV shows and books. Was I tempted to stop reading Gowanus? Sure. But there was something in the narrative style that kind of hooked me. I liked the idea of an intelligent vampire telling the story and as things got more bizarre I became more and more curious as to how it was going to turn out. For a while, I rationalized that there was an undertone of a serious treatise on sex and death, which there kind of is but not really. There is a lot sex, and death, and violence which will probably make this a box office smash if they ever turn it into a movie. But there is a good story here with strong characters and great descriptions of Brooklyn. This should come as no surprise since the author is a former reporter for the New York Daily News's Brooklyn division. The novel is as graphic as you can get without being a graphic novel. You should be prepared for this going in. It's not for squeamish readers. Other than that I highly recommend it and I look forward to more writing by Clem Richardson.

By Marihya Part modern romance, part riveting thriller, "Gowanus, A Love Story" is a wild ride into a fascinating new world. Clem Richardson skillfully weaves an unforgettable tale and a diverse palette of authentic characters that live on in your mind long after you have finished reading. Set in New Brooklyn, "Gowanus, A Love Story" takes the reader on a masterfully crafted journey from the borough's rich, storied past to its rapidly changing, hip present, with stops at iconic and insider sites – and then across seas and centuries – as the story unfolds and the suspense builds. "Looking Man" and Darlene will keep you guessing – and rooting for them – as their very different relationship evolves and their deep love wages war against other-worldly evil. "Gowanus" reawakens and revitalizes the reader's boundless childhood imagination, reminding one of its raw power and pure pleasures. This is the book you can't put down but don't want to finish because the world is so engrossing, its inhabitants so intriguing, and its plot a perfect chess game in which you don't see checkmate until it's executed. The spine-tingling climax is very satisfying.Really cannot wait to read more from this author.

Gibbons "Gowanus, A Love Story" is a fast-paced thriller, love story and walk along the dark side. With his crisp and descriptive writing style, author Clem Richardson takes you on a tour of New York's "New Brooklyn" that you've never seen before. It's a trip into the secret world of vampires, their sensuality, their brutality, their combustibility, and also for some a yearning for their own humanity -- and all that comes with it. Well written and well told. This might be your favorite beach read for this summer!
