Edgar Award finalist and international bestselling author Brian Freeman brings the long-awaited return of Lieutenant Jonathan Stride to the bitter cold of Duluth, Minnesota. Sixteen-year-old Catalina Mateo shows up unannounced one night in Detective Jonathan Stride's home, dripping wet from a desperate plunge into the icy waters of Lake Superior. Her sodden clothes stained with blood, Cat spins a tale of a narrow escape from a shadowy pursuer. Stride decides to trust this girl, but his judgment may be clouded by memories of Cat's mother. Ten years earlier, Cat hid under the porch of her family home while her mother was brutally butchered by her ex-con father. Stride still blames himself for not preventing the slaughter. But is Cat telling the truth? Stride's police partner, Maggie Bei, doubts the homeless girl, who has been living rough on the streets of Duluth since her mother's death--and now sleeps with a knife hidden under her pillow. As Stride investigates Cat's story, more violence trails in the teenager's wake--and Maggie's suspicions about her deepen. Now a single question haunts the void between them: Should Stride be afraid for--or of--this terribly damaged girl?

The Cold Nowhere: A Jonathan Stride Novel, by Brian Freeman

From Booklist Back off, Nordic noir. For sheer wintry relentlessness and icebound desolation, the various Scandinavian settings now fashionable in thrillers cannot compete with the decaying shipping and mining city of Duluth, Minnesota. And this small city, whose crumbling mansions and factories converted to shops are an architectural reminder of an earlier era, is the perfect place for a thriller about the stranglehold the past exerts on the present. Series hero Jonathan Stride, a Duluth police lieutenant, carries a barge-load of guilt from 10 years ago, when he failed to stop an abusive husband from murdering Stride’s friend. The past comes dripping into his home when the 16-year-old surviving daughter, now a runaway and a prostitute, arrives nearly dead from exposure after jumping off a ship in the harbor. The girl claims that a man is stalking her, trying to kill her. The narrative moves between the point of view of Stride and that of the girl’s pursuer, making this well-plotted, atmospheric thriller feel like a high-stakes chess game. Freeman’s Spilled Blood won Best Hardcover Novel of 2013 at the International Thriller Awards. --Connie Fletcher

Review "The Cold Nowhere is a riveting tale where you feel that you are discovering the details along side of Detective Stride... well-organized and intense with well-developed characters. The Cold Nowhere is a masterful tale written by a phenomenal storyteller."―Teri Davis, Mysteries Galore"An outstanding mystery thriller"―San Francisco Book Review"Back off, Nordic noir. Freeman shows how those endless North Shore winters have toughened and aged Stride, closing him off from the world, but the author also convincingly makes Stride break out of his icy, self-imposed shell."―Publisher's Weekly (starred)"[The] characters are well drawn and add believability to the surprising twists and turns of the plot.... The Cold Nowhere is a solid mystery wrapped around interesting characters coming to grips with their troubled pasts and searching for redemption."―Scott Pearson, Suspense Magazine"an outstanding mystery thriller."―San Francisco Book Review"another rousing tale of suspense... a bevy of unexpected twists and turns that make for an emotional and chilling story of page-turning mystery."―Express Milwaukee"I don't think I realized how much I missed the Jonathan Stride series until The Cold Nowhere, the latest installment, released... Seemingly incapable of writing a bad paragraph, Freeman is a master storyteller who makes the ice and grit and grime of street life in Duluth materialize beneath the feet of the reader. I was tempted to drive there just to check out the graffiti graveyard where the grim climax takes place. Writing and storytelling don't get much stronger than that, and thriller fiction doesn't get much better than The Cold Nowhere."―Joe Hartlaub, BookReporter

A Bevy of Likely Suspects By Nancy When it comes to Brian Freeman’s books, I have to put down all other reading material and distractions and concentrate fully on the story that is being told. Not that it is a complicated storyline, but the subtext is just as important, and in some cases, more important than the top layer that the reader is deeply focused on.There is nothing simple in Jonathan Stride’s life, so the day he comes home and realizes that someone is in his home, his life takes a dramatic turn. To understand this turn, you have to go back ten years to when Stride found a terrified six-year-old hiding under the porch of her family’s home.Catalina Mateo was a witness of sorts to the murder of her mother and the death of her father.Since that time, Cat’s life has been a struggle - foster homes, an aunt with a drug problem, running away and now a life of prostitution. When a party goes wrong and a killer is chasing her, Cat has nowhere to go, that is until she remembers what her mother told her, “find Stride, he will protect you”. Now Cat is hiding out at Jonathan’s home and a killer is determined to find her.Brian Freeman brings a bevy of likely suspects to the table. Each has a reason to want this young woman dead, but when the last snowflake falls, I was surprised as to who was behind this twisted story. I cannot say it was the last person that I would have suspected, but definitely not in my top five.Freeman does an incredible job of moving the story forward even though most of it takes place in the past. You have to know Stride’s history and the past of all the characters to know how they intertwine in the future and to realize that no one can completely walk away from the choices that they have made.Jonathan Stride is a great series and even though each book has a stand-alone quality, you really should start at the beginning so you can understand the relationships between the recurring characters.

SCHWEIKART I like all of Brian's books, but LOVED "Stripped," and haven't yet found one the equal of that great work. Now, I have it. "The Cold Nowhere," which centers on a new (old) person in Jonathan Stride's life, a teenage prostitute named "Cat," has a pace and interesting characters that are reminiscent of "Stripped." Probably the only drawback (for me) is that once again Freeman sets his book in, well, the Cold Nowhere of Duluth---Stride's town---whereas Vegas seemed to have more pop. Nevertheless, without going through the plot, this is an excellent read, one that I savored at two or three chapters a night rather than plowing through. Highly recommended.

Very slow By ggma Even though I've always liked Brian Freeman books there is bound to be one that just won't grab you and this one is it.I found it to be very very slow moving and a lot of repeating, I got so tired of the going into the past of Cat and her mother, come on! once you tell it then move on! but it is just repeated over and over and very tiresome. Then there is the 'affair' between Stride and Maggie, again repeat and more repeat and again I say -move on! Then there are just pages of nothing, I found myself skipping and skimming just to get to an important part of the story and skip the useless pages of - just nothing. Too many characters in this story and makes it hard to track all of them and remember what role they are playing and some of them are just not important and very forgettable. When I read a book I want it to grab my attention all the way through but this one did not do that. Frankly it is just another storyline that has been done over and over and really didn't offer anything in mounting suspense or anything to say it is a thriller, mainly it was just very slow and very boring.
