Not having read the original Spanish language version, it is difficult to say whether the translator did a good job of remaining true to the feel of Author Chicot's original work. The first book I read from this author was the Killing Pythagoras which was excellent. This book is the sequel to it, and well done. Killing Pythagoras was more compelling to me, set in 510 BC. In this sequel, the author moves from the Mediterranean of 507 BC to present day Spain in a classic confrontation of good and evil. The story line does require you to suspend belief of its events on occasion, more so than Killing Pythagoras. Notably, the translator in this book is Annie Crawford. In Killing Pythagoras, the translator is Anamarie Crowe Serrano. Not sure why Chicot needed to switch translators. There is a slightly different feel between the two books.

I was excited to read Lord of Minds because I enjoyed Killing Pythagoras and the topic of mind control is a fascinating one. Once I’d gotten a few chapters in, though, I was disappointed, because I felt the story dragged and there was too much extraneous information. One entire chapter, in fact, was about the savings-and-loan scandal and the repercussions it had had in Spain. Though to me, this topic was irrelevant, boring, and dated, I withheld judgment, because I thought it might play some important, though obscure, role later in the story. As I continued to read, however, I realized that chapter was unrelated to anything else in the book, completely gratuitous, and basically seemed like an attempt by the author to show off how well-informed he was. I read some of the other reviews before writing my own, and I was reminded that this book, like Killing Pythagoras, is a translation from the Spanish. I just wanted to point out that it’s so well-translated and flows so naturally in English that it’s easy to forget that it was originally written in another language. Kudos to the translator on a job well done!
