The Tai Chi Companion: A book around Tai Chi, by Lucy Gardner

From the Author It all started with the stretching.  Since I'd begun studying tai chi with Frederick Behar in early 2013, I had been following a stretching regime which I knew had significantly improved my flexibility as well as bringing other benefits to my tai chi. I'd also started work on some of the other activities mentioned in the book: mobility, improving my breathing, and had been doing Master Yang's warm-up most days.   I always swim a lot when I'm in Thailand - at swimming pools in Bangkok when I can't get to the beach - and had started to investigate the parallels I'd been finding between tai chi and swimming. But that wasn't all.  The more I got into tai chi, the more I found it related to everything in my life.  How my body reacted to stimuli, how I moved, how I stayed still...it was all relevant. More and more I found myself wanting to write about my experiences and share what I thought would be useful information for those who already practised or wanted to start doing tai chi. The book was fun to write and we originally took most of the photos in the playground where Fred and I stretch in Bangkok.  I wanted to show that it was possible to do the exercises anywhere, without using any special equipment other than a bit of imagination.  Eventually I decided they'd have to be re-shot to be clearer and easier to follow, and we did them in the studio at home in France with even less equipment than the play park. After I'd finished the exercise section the rest of the book seemed to grow by itself.  I found myself writing about my experiences and wanted to include the section on studying abroad, as it's something that would have been helpful to me before I set out for China. Tai Chi Tales was a challenge, because I wanted to include the competing versions of history side by side.  One or other is usually claimed as gospel truth, unlikely though the details may be, and I felt the need to poke gentle fun at this representation.  Newcomers to tai chi may find it a little confusing, but I hope that the more into tai chi they get the more they'll appreciate the irony. It's almost obligatory to include something about the different styles, so adding this completed the Tai Chi Companion's mission to be "a book around tai chi".  As I've said before, I didn't want any tai chi in it.  You can learn that from your teacher, DVDs or a book which specifically covers the form you're practising.  The Tai Chi Companion aims to accompany students along the road, offering what may be useful information and about sixty exercises which will definitely improve your tai chi if practised seriously. Thick books can be off-putting, so I haven't gone into endless detail, rather trying to introduce certain subjects and awaken people's interest.  With this, students can seek out more information themselves and use the list of excellent further reading at the back. My experiences have been very valuable on my own tai chi path and so I wanted to share them, and hope that they'll be useful to others too.

About the Author Lucy Gardner was born in South Africa to English/Welsh parents, grew up in South East England and spent fourteen years living in Northern Scotland. She finds it difficult to answer when asked where she's from. Late in 2007 she discovered tai chi and soon everything changed. She found a tai chi school, started with once a week classes and soon began practising at home most days. She sought out more and more classes. She read widely. Within two years she had abandoned home and marriage. After three years she packed in her career in insurance and travelled to China to study tai chi full time. So far she hasn't gone back to conventional living, but spends her time travelling between Europe and Asia with her partner Frederick Behar, a French tai chi teacher. She is a registered tai chi instructor with the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain. Lucy continues to study tai chi and a variety of other subjects which she finds complement the practice. “If you search,” she says “You can relate tai chi principles to just about everything.”

I received this book for Christmas from my wife. It was a great gift. I have only been practicing martial arts for a couple of years now. Tai Chi has been a style of diversity for me and has taught me more about aligning my body, mind, and spirit. Ms. Gardner has pulled together lots of good information that only someone who has experienced it first hand could have written. The reader gets a clear mental image with thorough instruction on how to learn and practice Tai Chi as well as some of its history which seems to be a mystery. I will definitely recommend this to other Tai Chi enthusiasts! ~Russell

Everything you need for tai chi except the tai chi By Sifu A unique book, the author has written from the heart about the problems and solutions she discovered on her own tai chi path. I liked the sections on how to go about studying independently in China and the use of squat toilets. :-) The exercises are clearly explained and photographed. They cover just about everything you could think of without doing tai chi itself. The every day life section gave me a lot of food for thought as well. My only criticism is that it wasn't in French!
