Detective Alex Recht remembers well an earlier case involving a missing girl, so when a dismembered young woman’s body is found, he realizes right away whose it is. As the site is excavated, another body is unearthed; this one is a man who has been buried for a much longer time. Then still another body is found. Investigative analyst Bergman, assigned the task of looking into the young woman’s life, finds that she had been researching a children’s author, Thea Aldrin, who was convicted of murdering her partner and suspected of foul play with her missing teenage son. Aldrin seems somehow connected to all of the bodies, but she is mute and cannot offer much help. Bergman disturbingly also finds her own partner’s name among the young woman’s effects. Recht, a recent widower, finds work is his salvation and becomes obsessed with the case. The third member of the team, detective Peter Rydh, recently reconciled with his wife, and has her support as he delves into the murders that threaten to consume them all. This is a complicated yet fast-moving story, and the detectives all find themselves with personal connections to the case. About the Author Kristina Ohlsson is a political scientist who has previously worked for the Swedish Security Service and as a Counter-Terrorism Officer at OSCE (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe). Unwanted, Silenced, and The Disappeared are the first three books in her crime series featuring Fredrika Bergman. She now lives in Stockholm, where she works full-time as a writer.

Bukowsky In "The Disappeared," by Kristina Ohlsson, Swedish Detectives Alex Recht, Peder Rydh, and Fredrika Bergman look into the puzzling case of a bright and lovely young woman, Rebecca Trolle, who is found murdered and dismembered after having vanished two years earlier. The police have an abundance of suspects. Could the killer be a spurned lover seeking revenge, or does the answer lie elsewhere? Complicating matters further is the discovery of yet another corpse in the same area where Rebecca was buried.The police officers repeatedly interview individuals who knew the deceased. They double-check alibis and scrutinize each witness's past. While they struggle to solve this baffling crime, Alex and Fredrika also face personal crises. Alex is a lonely widower who uses his work as an excuse to avoid socializing. Frederika is living with a much older man, Spencer, whom she suspects is hiding something significant from her."The Disappeared" starts out as an absorbing thriller with a multi-faceted plot. Alex and his team are hard-working, but they conduct a shoddy investigation--overlooking obvious clues, committing sins of omission, and failing to communicate with one another effectively. In addition, Ohlsson repeats the same information again and again, slowing the book's pace. Too many red herrings clutter and weigh down the narrative. Furthermore, the author relies on far-fetched coincidences and clichés involving one-dimensional, sadistic, and megalomaniacal villains. Sentences like "terror sliced through her belly like a knife" do not help matters. On the plus side, Ohlsson poignantly describes the grief that can destroy family members when a loved one dies. Although "The Disappeared" is an involving enough mystery, its obvious flaws prevent it from receiving a higher rating.
19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant series By Luanne Ollivier I quite discovered Swedish author Kristina Ohlsson by accident when I picked up her first book "Unwanted". Fortuitous accident - because it was the first in a fantastic crime series featuring Investigative analyst Fredrika Bergman. The third book, Disappeared, is newly released and it too was a fantastic read. The prologue's opening lines, set in the past, grabbed me immediately.... "When the film begins she has no idea what she is about to see. Nor does she realise what devastating consequences this film and the decisions she then makes will have on the rest of her life." Present day. Two years after she disappears, the dismembered body of Rebecca Tolle is found by a dog walker in a shallow grave. When the crime scene team expand their excavation of the grave site, they find another body. But the second body has been buried for at least thirty years. Are the two connected? Is this the work of a serial killer spanning thirty years? Frederika and the special unit of the Swedish Federal Police are called in. Their case builds slowly, with multiple suspects - one of them close to a member of the team. I really enjoy Ohlsson's character building. She has given each main character a rich personal life that provides a more intimate reading experience. Ohlsson is extremely clever with her plotting and delivery of her story. Interspersed with the investigation are Internal Affairs interviews held after the case has ended. "You're here because you were in charge of an investigation that ended in disaster." We get wee snippets of information that heighten the tension, provide subtle clues, provide teasers - and kept this reader up far too late. Midway through, I went back to read that prologue again as the pieces started to fall into place. An intelligent, well written series (with a side of grisly) that I can easily recommend. I do hope Ohlsson plans to continue with this series.

This was the third book in the series.if you like psychological thriller's you will enjoy the disappeared.I have read them all and kristina ohlsson keeps getting better.can't wait for the next one to come out.
