By Bill Baker What a rich and intriguing buffet of PI tales with an occasional ample seasoning of sex – some spice to heat and liven up the tales – rich inintrigue, and often sharp detecting.This is a fine variety of a number of current writers and although you may not have heard of some of them, sampling their work here may lead to discover more of their stories and novels.Jump on this generous sampling of 17 current writers – you know you deserve this treat!

By Amazon Customer One of the most important reasons I developed the Shamus Sampler series of anthologies was that the Private Eye Writers of America didn't seem to put out theirs anymore. Lucky for me, they're back with this one, as always expertly edited by Robert J. Randisi. I'm sorry he didn't do introductions for each tale, used to love those.The running theme, as can be guessed a bit by the title is sex. Some graphic and kinky, some more implied.Among the writers are Carolina Garcia-Aquilera, Justin Scott, Gary Phillips, Jerry Kennealy, Michael Bracken, Christine Matthews, Robert J. Randisi, Warren Murphy, Ted Fitzgerald, Dick Lochte, and John Lutz. I loved seeing Max Allan Collins with a Nate Heller story and Jerry Kennealy put in a short and sweet Nick Polo tale. The fact there's a VI Warshawski tale in it should sell some extra copies. Some tales are a bit raunchier than others, Bracken's probably the more hardcore one. If you don't like that kind of stuff, don't worry, it is at the beginning but not indicative to the rest.Special mention should go to Ted Fitzgerald's Tex Texeira who is a PI that does background checks for a nudie magazine. I thought that idea was very original and the tale very enjoyable. @Ted: if you are reading this, be sure to contact me for an interview.

After 4 she manages to escape and learns that it was her dad, the Major, who kidnapped her as a test to see if she could escape. Needless to say, Sarah has some major daddy issues as her dad is a pain the ass and a misogynist.In the interim, an Ebola epidemic has struck England with over 400 cases reported. Howard, from the Major Crimes Unit soon learns that a doctor has deliberately infected the victims. This Dr. is a madman, obsessed with the fact that the people of Britain don’t really care about the kids in other countries dying from Ebola, Malaria and other diseases. While he has a point, the idea of infecting English kids to get people to notice these diseases is seriously warped.Sarah’s dad also wants to get hold of this Dr. Ostensibly, he has a contract to bring the doctor to South Africa for prosecution. He manages to convince Sarah to join him on this basis, something possible only because of Sarah’s daddy issues. (I liked the way this issue was addressed.) Sarah must discover where her loyalties lie, and whether family is more important than her moral compass.As in the last book, the story ends, but there is a teaser for the next book which I'm eagerly awaiting. I'm very curious to see what "The Peeling" is and how it fits into terrorist plots.I loved this book and Sarah is one of the most interesting, likable and engaging characters I’ve come across in awhile.NOTE: Unlike the first book there are only a few editing errors - a huge improvement.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome sequel to Soft Target By Mylene Gotta love Sarah Stone. This was a great sequel as you got to know her father this time. I did think that the story was lagging at one point, but by the end, it all came together. I didn't think this was Wright's best novel, but it was still a great read. This book also left the door open to a third novel and introduced the disease, the Peeling... Can't wait!Please note that there was also a short story by Craig Saunders. He totally roped me in. Loved it, and was a page-turner with very interesting and exciting characters. VERY QUIRKY! I definitely need to check out his other novels and short stories.Enjoy!

Trying to do her best, she is often undermined by her male partners, while they defend the country against the terrorist. Her past history in the war shows a solder that wants to do the right thing. Her moral guidelines, lead to the disappointment of the Father she always wanted to prove herself to. I loved the book!

Great characters and promise of things to come from Tait By Deborah Cook (@ Debbish dot com) Julia Taylor's being released from prison having served 10 years for a murder which some saw as warranted and others as vigilantism. Now 30 she's returning home to her eccentric artist mother Eleanor and stepmother Dee in the Blue Mountains.We quickly learn that there's more to the incident which sent Julia to prison so many years before. Determined to protect her family however, her only option is to maintain her silence about other events of that time.Not helping her cause is Detective Inspector Dylan Andrews. Although Julia's experience with law enforcement has been far-less-than-positive she finds herself attracted to this newcomer but forced to keep him at arm's length when he wants to dig into a past she'd prefer stay hidden.I occasionally struggle with romantic suspense which relies a too little on the former and less on the latter, however Tait achieves a good balance. The plot itself seemed as if it was going to be predictable but a few late few twists and turns added some complexity.A strength of the novel were Tait's characters—Julia and her supporting cast of family and friends. Tait also offered readers a wonderful sense of ‘place’. Her description of the Blue Mountains really reflected Julia's (and obviously Tait's) passion for the area.I did feel the editing process could have been tighter. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Romantic Crime Series By A. Rose Julia is released from a ten year prison sentence for murder. She wants to get back to 'normal' life back in the Blue Mountains in Australia but even before she reaches home she has a bad encounter with her original arresting officer and is threatened to keep quiet about details of her arrest all those years ago. If all had gone as Julia planned then this would have been a very boring story indeed, however, she's shocked at the way her little sister Blossom has turned out, Blossom's drug running boyfriend, hostility from people in the neighbourhood, and then a body turns up in her own back yard which seems to be framing her for a new murder. Someone is trying very hard to get her back in prison and although she thinks she knows who, she's at a major disadvantage in proving anything against such a powerful man.The plot is mostly fairly predictable and not too complex but this doesn't come across as a simple story either. It is technically and legally correct with a strong character base and the overall story achieves a gripping and fulfilling feel. There were one or two ideas in there which made it different from the usual crime thriller – Julia has a stepmother married to her mother – which gave a softness instead of a more male dominated family. It had a strong romantic side to it too which may be a downside to those who want a full-on crime thriller but I felt it gave a lightness and uplifting flow to the writing style. D.B. Tait is more than qualified in the field of crime having worked for many years in the criminal justice system before writing this, her first full length novel.I am happy to recommend Cold Deception as a great start to the Dark Mountain series and will certainly seek out Desperate Deception, the second in the series.

The author paints a picture of the events in a clever way, you can see it all happening, you are right there with the characters. Julia had gone through so much, and wanted to just leave it all behind, and start her life anew. But it isn't that easy in the small town in the Australian Blue Mountains, where everyone knows each other, and all are aware of the past. The adjustment back to normal life wasn't easy, even though Julia was doing her best. And when trouble started to find her in every corner, it just got more difficult.There are so many secrets, everyone has one. There wasn't a character in the story, that didn't have major struggles in their life. That started to seem a bit overwhelming after a while.Dylan and Julia were attracted to each other from the first moment they meet, but their situation seems impossible. He is a police officer, she is on parole for murder, and more bodies start to show up, and all the murders are somehow connected to Julia. With all the secrets unraveling, investigations going on, and family drama to be dealt with, not to mention Julia's adjustment to the life outside, the romance between Dylan and Julia doesn't get that much focus, it is developing more on the back burner, and left for happy for now.The mystery behind all the murders, the drug running, and other crimes committed in the small town, seems to all point into one person. There's enough plot twists in the story to keep it interesting, even though the story moves on rather slowly. At the end, all the events are twisted in together, and some of the crimes and mysteries are solved, with one major criminal still on a run.The story was interesting, maybe some editing to tie it more together, would have made it move a bit faster, and I wanted just one person in the story to not have any major issues with them, but I guess this way, it was more lifelike. The romance was believable, real, and honest. I'm glad Dylan didn't choose to hide his feelings at the end, but came forward, no matter what the cost. Lots of drama and crimes in the tale, that kept the interest to the end~ Three spoons with a teaspoon on the side

By Enrico Grafitti James Gordon’s ‘The Warmest Winter’ is an intricate murder mystery where no one is exactly who they seem to be. As befitting all great crime thrillers, there are more unexpected twists than in a barrel full of red herrings. These serve to maintain reader interest and create the marvellous atmosphere of constant tension present throughout. Yet what drives this novel forward are two masterful traits the author brings to the narrative. The first is the powerful prose that sets the tone in each scene and lends an enviable solidity to the events the writer conjures up. The second, a far more difficult proposition, is the courage to tell this complex tale in the first person. We, the readers, find out what has happened at the same time as the protagonist, and are equally led up false trails with him until the surprising climax is revealed. Our involvement with the protagonist though is not one of an ephemeral observer. Author Gordon places us in his skin, allows us to experience his own troubles as his marriage crumbles and his future prospects appear to disintegrate too. It makes the eyes through which we witness the mystery unravel a very human perspective which serves to colour our own appreciation of the trials and tribulations other characters experience.If you are looking for a robust murder mystery with a down-to-earth flavour, this is the one for you. Highly recommended! One of my best reads this year!

This book had a lot of great twists and turns with a great plot By Regina Morris I was looking for a cozy mystery and the cover of this book pulled me in. What I got was a fast paced thriller! This book had a lot of great twists and turns with a great plot. Definitely a 5 star read. I don't know if it was Kindle or not, but the formatting was terrible. I know authors aren't necessarily responsible for ebook formats (maybe the publisher can take a look?) but there were cases where dialog from more than one person was run together and where a chapter title was at the end of the last paragraph of the previous chapter. I don't want to lower my rating based upon formatting issues since what I really want to rate is the story itself, but it was difficult to read with the formatting.

The Warmest Winter read like cinema and flowed like words of poetry in some instances.I tried to figure out who the culprit was before it all was revealed, but I couldn't and was utterly surprised when I did.The story moved, from one event to the next. I liked that I was able to keep going without coming up for air, really. Loving the romantic encounters...I was covering my mouth, shaking my head and gasping in one instance, and feeling all warm and fuzzy in others. It all came into to play with this story.I was impressed, but not surprised that it would be this good. Nice debut James. Had that Alex Cross feel... #WOOO!

About the Author

George Sanders was born in St Petersburg in 1906. He left Russia in 1917 with his family, who settled in England and had George educated at Bedales and Brighton College.

He made his British film debut in 1929, but it was in 1930’s Hollywood that he honed his distinctive, charming-yet-dangerous screen persona – the quintessential cad. Sanders co-starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent (both 1940), and went on to win an Academy Award for his signature role, that of Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950). He continued to work in films up until the year of his death in 1972.

In the 1940’s, Sanders’ film-star status was the impetus for his two crime novels, both featuring recognizably Sanders-esque heroes: Crime on My Hands (1944) and Stranger at Home (1946). In 1960 came a third book: his autobiography, fittingly titled Memoirs of A Professional Cad in which the line between fiction and fact is blurred even more convincingly – and wittily – than in the novels. All three works are available from Dean Street Press in both paperback and ebook formats.

If you like George Sanders you'll love this book By DragonWing I've been a fan of Sanders for years - especially his Saint movies, and the three Falcon movies he made before he let his real life brother Tom Conway take over the role in The Falcon's Brother. Although this book was ghost-written by Craig Rice (a well-known novelist, author of John J. Malone mysteries and screenwriter for some of the Saint and Falcon movies, and a friend of Sanders) you would be willing to bet that George Sanders wrote this book. It's in the first person, he's making a movie and a murder occurs on the set, which he has to solve. You can hear his voice in your mind's eye as you read this book, you can see his sardonic smile.

Stankus I had the opportunity to hear Walt Whitman author and historian Garrett Peck at the 2015 Gaithersburg Book Festival. While much has been written about Walt Whitman over the years, very little has been written about his years in Washington, DC where he stayed for nearly a decade. He first arrived in Washington after his brother George was wounded as a Union Soldier. While tending to his brother's care, he became a nurse volunteer-- or as Peck describes it, a "One Man USO"-- writing letters to soldier's family, listening to their stories as they convalesced in one of two dozen temporary hospitals in the capital. It is here he met the love of his life, who was present at Ford's Theater the night of the Lincoln Assassination, and whose first-hand retelling of the details added depth to two of Whitman's most famous poems about Lincoln-- "Oh Captain, My Captain" and "When Lilacs Last In the Dooryard Bloom'd." Peck's detailed research brings to life of quintessential American poet Walt Whitman.

A delightful history By JOHN DEFERRARI Many of us are aware that Walt Whitman was in Washington during the Civil War and that he tended to the wounded at the area's military hospitals. And that's the extent of our knowledge. Garrett Peck has now fleshed out the fascinating story of Walt Whitman in Washington with his usual deft touch, giving us the opportunity to appreciate the great poet as both an entertaining eccentric as well as simply a kind and gentle soul. All the drama of the wartime city is here--from the heartache of the thousands of sick and wounded streaming in to the city's crowded hospitals through to the shocking assassination of the President. Here is Whitman with all his genius and human foibles, the man who writes towering poetry one day and on another kicks himself for falling in love with a young streetcar conductor. If you're a poetry lover, a local history lover, or such enjoy lesser known true stories about famous people, Garrett's latest engagingly written book is definitely for you.

It's one thing to read a biography full of facts and dates but completely another to also feel for the subject the way Peck has brought out Whitman's character, both the good and bad. Thoroughly enjoyable read!

About the Author Judith Hannan is the author of Motherhood Exaggerated (CavanKerry Press, 2012), her memoir of discovery and transformation during her daughter’s cancer treatment and her transition into survival. Her essays have appeared in such publications as Woman’s Day, Opera News, The Huffington Post, The Healing Muse, ZYZZYVA, Twins Magazine, and The Martha’s Vineyard Gazette. She teaches writing about personal experience to homeless mothers and at-risk adolescents as well as to medical students, and is a judge of the annual essay contest sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism-in-Medicine. She served as Director of Development of the 92nd Street Y and then for the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. She now serves on the board of the Museum, Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects, as well as on three boards affiliated with the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York—the Adolescent Health Center (where she now serves as President of the Advisory Board), the Children’s Center Foundation, and Global Health. She lives in New York.
