Magpies have an eye for shiny things. They search for bright bits of meaning amongst the dirt and filth of their world. Living in a small town on the outskirts of Saskatoon with his emotionally distant and alcoholic father, Ben struggles with his increasingly somber view of society. He is haunted by the death of his older brother and the mysteries of his mother’s suicide. Unable to live life like the other magpies around him, he slips deeper into the darkness of his own mind. Deciding that everything wrong in his world can be traced back to the drug dealer, Faran Bird, Ben travels to Saskatoon to kill Faran. In one long and lonely day, Ben starts out on the dusty gravel roads of his hometown, and continues on, to the dirt and grime of the worst parts of Saskatoon.

Dark, emotional and brilliant By TFLReader I'm a sucker for a good literary tale and find that we don't get nearly enough of them out of this generation of writers. This debut novel from author Michael James is a noted exception to this, as I found it to be both engaging and brilliant. "Magpie" is the story of Ben, who lives in Saskatoon and sees little that is bright and beautiful in his world, as magpies are apt to do. His mother committed suicide, his father is an alcoholic and his older brother has died. Determined to exact revenge on a local drug dealer, the moral dilemmas begin and the story is quite emotional. Pulled along by a strong character, with real situations and some vivid imagery, I found this to be a very enjoyable read and can't wait to see what this talented writer has in store for us next. Well done.

The man character, Ben, grew increasingly darker as the book progressed and I was eager to unravel what had led him there. I liked how you could never tell exactly what was reality and what was taking place only inside his mind. Fun read.
