Review 4.0 out of 5 stars A woman's life March 17, 2015 By Robert Krueger Format:Paperback This is the story of a woman's life. It is a story of loss and redemption, of love, and of a fall from belief. Keeping that in mind, it is a well-told story. There is some implausibility but that is common in fiction and should not be a distraction.. What one should see is the psychological make-up of the protagonist. Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil. Format:Paperback I must admit that Confessions of an Assassin didn't start out the way I expected. I wasn't expecting the slow character development but I now regret my first thoughts. It was a wonderful story of a young heroine being slyly led into a mysterious occupation only to find love and an unfortunate betrayal. I thoroughly enjoyed the story as it unfolded and look forward to reading other of the author's efforts. I must admit that although I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review I can't say enough for this moving story.
From the Author Upon completing this book, I realized that I had crossed the plateau of writing. This is the best work yet for me which is most exciting. Although this is an Action/Adventure, it is a book which should appeal to all readers. Tracing the life of Catherine Carnegie, from New York to Eufaula, Alabama, it is difficult not to identify with "Cat" in her struggle for independence and success. Her family's disapproval, of her choice to leave her northern roots for a solitary life in the south, strikes a cord for most. When the time approaches, to leave the comfort of home for "the real world," her joy is contagious. Life is perfect, until a classmate from the University of Alabama, shows up frequently in her private world. His offer, for a glamorous "secret" life, is most appealing. As she plunges deeper, into her associations with this man, she is invited to join a secret government agency. Assurances are given, that she will not be jeopardized in any way. Yet, the "thrills" of Washington parties and clandestine meetings overpower her logic. In the end, she is given the hardest assignment of her life in Bali, Indonesia. The loss of the person, whom she cherishes, results in a downward spiral. Her days are spent in exile and regret until the package arrives which sets her free.
From the Inside Flap Confessions of an Assassin Confessions of an Assassin is the story of CatherineCarnegie. Although she was born to awealthy, prestigious family from New York, her dream was all things southern. "Cat" finally obtained everything, of which shedreamed, since childhood. Once established, in the loveliest home in Eufaula,Alabama, she meets a vaguely familiar man, from her college days. He changes herlife. What begins as a fun diversion, attending state dinners in Washington, soon immerses her in a dangerous unknowngovernment agency. Despite attempts towithdraw from their clutches, she realizes that they are ruthless and unwillingto ever let her leave. Her assignments becomemore dangerous; sent to various places all over the globe. Eventually, she is given her most heartwrenching assignment in Bali, Indonesia, which will change her life forever. This story of love, between an American aristocrat and a Saudi man of questionable background, will pull you into a web of deceit and possible espionage.

By Chanticleer Book Reviews Catherine Carnegie, daughter of the Black Sheep of the New York Carnegies, enjoyed the idyllic childhood of wealthy parents. She and her brother Nathaniel attended only the best schools and were cared for by a loving family retainer who made certain they never wanted for anything. However, when Catherine at age eighteen naively asserts her independence, choosing to go to the University of Alabama instead of a northern Ivy League school, her position in the household immediately becomes second-best to her Nat, who has chosen to follow in his father’s footsteps, attending Harvard. And though she has even severely disappointed her beloved grandfather, Catherine holds firm, leaving to attend a southern university to, as she envisions it, become her own version of Scarlett O’Hara. Thus begins a series of life-changing mistakes Catherine makes in the name of independence that will cause her heart-wrenching regret in her later years. Once at university, Catherine will come under the influence of a friend who urges her to go to work for a secret government agency. In the beginning, the work is glamorous and exciting. Eventually, though, Catherine will accept the assignment that almost destroys her life.Heavner begins this novel as a reminiscence by Catherine who, at fifty years of age, is looking back on a life of bad choices and regrets. She has become a woman who rarely leaves her house for fear of being “discovered” by the agency she worked for, or of taking an action that will cause them to eliminate her. She is tormented by the loss of the only man she has ever loved, and experiences frequent nightmares of the events of her past. As the story unfolds, Heavner hints at the possibility that Catherine’s salvation may come in the form of a package, the contents of which may free her from her pain, regrets, and grief.Although Heavner has employed the well-known literary device of telling her story in the style of a memoir, readers may become frustrated with the lack of action in the story, particularly in the early chapters. The story premise is unique and engaging, and many will find it fascinating, though they may become irritated with its obvious craft and editing flaws.

As a young woman, she wanted to be independent, in control of her life. She achieved that goal in opposition to her family. But she is seduced into becoming a member of a secret government organization. It is a life of glamor and danger. She is no longer in control of her destiny. To describe Cat: she is naïve with an underlying innocence; trusting and complex yet simultaneously uncomplicated; denying a need for acceptance and love but needing them because they are unrelated necessities. Because of those needs, she finds herself in a pit from which there is no escape. The title and the cover do not reflect the true nature of the novel. One would assume that there would be a trained assassin planning and tracking his kill or a story of recruitment and training of an individual to be a killer. Although there is murder, this is not a high-pitched 'killer' type novel. Rather, it is the story of a woman's life.
