By Ginny I just finished ”Lip Hooked” and am experiencing the sadness I always do when saying 'good-bye' to characters I have grown to like. I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who likes Carl Hiaasen’s tongue-in-cheek approach to life in Florida. At the risk of dating myself, I liken Mr. Gardner’s lead character, Finn, to Travis McGee, John MacDonald’s hero. I have never gone deep-sea fishing but the author really made me feel as if I was on the boat with the characters. A legitimate page-turning, great read. As many others have commented, I too am sorry to lose Chris Gardner, when he so obviously had a gift to share.

It deserves five stars just for the audacity of the story and the broad tapestry of characters and locales. It's a raw tale that pulls no punches, so be forewarned. If you're looking for something that is the polar opposite of a cozy mystery, you're in the right place.

To me much of the story had manufactured instances that seemed a bit far fetched. The main character came across as an angry, secretive, idiot with an alcohol problem. As far as the ending goes the so called good guy's end up losing their savings and relationships while the bad guys walk of free and clear with significant wealth.It's sad that the author has passed away as there is the feeling that this was intended as a first part of the story and some of the things left hanging may have been sorted in a future book.
