In the third book in this popular murder mystery series set in Cumbria in the north-west of England, it is September 2003, six months after the case of the 'Ayton Swans'. The body of a young woman is discovered in a hairdressing salon. Within days, the body of a second victim is found in the same street. At the same time, several apparently unconnected individuals receive threatening anonymous letters. As he attempts to find the killer, Detective Inspector David McClennan encounters constant reminders of a curse put on the area by a group of seventeenth century women who were executed as witches, a curse which appears to be increasingly relevant to current events. In search of the truth, the inspector must separate myth from reality, along the way learning some astonishing facts. Well plotted engrossing tale By Mr. Victor Botterill As I had never read any of the Inspector David McClennan stories I acceded to the publisher’s advice and read the trilogy of the stories in the correct order. The climax is reached in the third book. I’m glad I did, because although the author has sought (successfully) to overcome this challenge, I felt that I got more out of the series than just relying on the summaries within the story. The Curse of the Ayton Witches is a jolly good read. It is set in Cumbria in the fictitious town of Ayton. Alison Greaves involves a lot of characters, but overcomes the problem of confusion by gently reminding the reader throughout, as to who each character is. This is done so well that I actually believed my memory was improving, because I was able to follow the police reasoning without being confused by constantly thinking “Now who is this and where does he or she fit in?”There were moments when I though the murderer was one character and then another and so on. It was engrossing and a great pleasure to read. Gradually my suspicions grew and there was a very satisfying culmination in each book.I have become an expert on feminism (whether I wanted to be or not!!!), but don’t let this put you off, it just adds to the story in a positive way. On occasions some of the characters appear to rant about important social issues that seem to have no relevance to the tale, but you realise later that that the author is actually cleverly pointing out the integrity in the people concerned and this is refreshing and effective. I feel I know all the characters well. This is a very good book, but I would recommend that readers start with The Ayton Swans then read The Secrets of Seldom Seen before enjoying The Curse of the Ayton Witches.

Another Great McClennan Mystery By Reader Grace This book has all the familiar ingredients of a McClennan murder mystery - lots of characters whose lives are intertwined, an evocative sense of place, plenty of twists and turns, many suspects, an unexpected ending and some serious underlying themes. There are also some major shocks in this one - they are particularly shocking if you've read the previous two books. Now I can't wait for the next one.
