A missing amulet and an old enemy... After a dramatic battle with Professor James Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, Sherlock Holmes is reported dead. The news has crushed his friend and chronicler Dr John Watson, who has taken to drink, nearly destroying his practice and health. In an attempt to restore Watson to sound mind and body, Sherlock’s brother Mycroft sends him on a mysterious mission to New York state. His assignment is to thwart Moriarty’s successor, Colonel Sebastian Moran, from securing a treasure mentioned in a Robert Louis Stevenson novel. But there is much more to it than that… Sherlock reappears. Along with Watson, the notorious Lillie Langtry, members of an Iroquois secret society and pair of legendary western outlaws, Holmes is drawn into a near-catastrophic clash in the cave of Mad Bear.

It is perfect for a Friday evening where nothing is scheduled save for a glass of wine and a roaring fireplace. The action is nonstop and the plot elements tie together seamlessly. I place it in the category of books you get somewhat disgruntled about when realizing you are nearly out of pages. Throughout there are elements of sly humor (Hoping Indians get casinos? Shame, Mr Elvin) and the reader is presented with a large picture clearly indicating that evil doing is not limited to those living in squalor but include the various highest-ranking individuals in the land even including, gasp, royalty.I'm guessing Mr Elvin had a good time writing this book. He raises the age-old question if bad guys are doing good things for you, do they still qualify as bad guys? By the same token, if the so-called 'good guys' which include crooked police, politicians and others perform evil deeds, do they merit the designation of 'good guys?' There are several action-filled climaxes and an ending that makes the book well worth the purchase price. I look forward to more of Mr Elvin's offerings.

By ralphoto Mr. Elvin writes a tidy little tale as if it were written by Doyle himself, with all the Elizabethan flavor and syntax necessary to keep the novel from being a simple knockoff. The references are interesting, and seem to be historically interesting, placin Holmes and Watkins, er, Watson in Saratoga, new York, and adding some notable characters, including Lillie Langtry and an old Indian chief. He even throws in a character called William Yates, the butler, but it's easy to forgive him for that. It's a good, quick, enjoyable read.

Image Holmes being able to identify two person out of their usual area in North America without any photos to go by. There were some good points in the adventure but this story is more for fun than a real pastiche of the great detective and the doctor.
