From Sara Shepard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Little Liars, comes The Heiresses—a novel about the Saybrooks, a diamond family blessed with beauty and fortune yet plagued by a string of tragic and mysterious deaths.

The only thing more flawless than a Saybrook’s solitaire is the family behind the diamond empire. Beauties, entrepreneurs, debutantes, and mavens, the Saybrooks are the epitome of high society. Anyone would kill to be one of them. But be careful what you wish for, because if you were a Saybrook, you’d be haunted by secrets and plagued by a dark streak of luck.

Tragedy strikes the prominent family yet again on a beautiful morning in May when thirty-four-year-old Poppy, the most remarkable Saybrook of them all, flings herself from the window of her office. Everyone is shocked that someone so perfect would end her own life—until her cousins receive an ominous warning: One heiress down, four to go.

Was it suicide . . . or murder? And who will be next: Aster, the beautiful but reckless girl who’s never worked a day in her life—and who’s covering up her father’s darkest secret? Her older sister, Corrine, whose meticulously planned future is about to come crashing down around her? Perhaps it will be Natasha, the black sheep of the family who suddenly disinherited herself five years ago. Or maybe the perpetually single Rowan, who had the most to gain from her cousin’s death.

A gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller about heiresses who must uncover a dark truth about their family before they lose the only thing money can’t buy: their lives.

The Heiresses: A Novel, by Sara Shepard

From Booklist YA juggernaut Shepard moves into adult territory with this novel, the first in a planned series. There are five heiresses to the Saybrook family fortune—cousins Poppy, Corrine, Rowan, Aster, and Natasha. The media think that the family’s vast wealth comes with a curse, for sudden death under mysterious circumstances seems always to strike the next heir in line. Mostly, the women laugh off suggestions of a curse. After all, it’s better to die young and leave a pretty corpse, right? But then Poppy, who has a past but seems to have her life under control, commits suicide. The family is even more shocked when the FBI arrives with indications of foul play. The remaining heiresses juggle various sexy men, lies, family secrets ranging from mistresses to Nazis, and assorted rich girl problems while trying to uncover the truth about Poppy’s death and hopefully put an end to the curse rumors. Soapy stuff, to be sure, but Shepard’s got name recognition. --Rebecca Vnuk

From the Back Cover

You know the Saybrooks. Everyone does. Perhaps you've read a profile of them in People or have seen their pictures in Vogue. Perhaps while walking along Fifth Avenue, you've been tempted to enter the building with their family name etched into the pediment above the door.

The only thing more flawless than a Saybrook's diamond solitaire is the family behind the jewelry empire. Beauties, entrepreneurs, debutantes, and style mavens, they are the epitome of New York City's high society. But being a Saybrook comes at a price—they are heirs not only to a dizzying fortune but also to a decades-old family curse. Tragedy strikes the prominent family yet again when thirty-four-year-old Poppy flings herself from the window of her TriBeCa office. Everyone is shocked that a woman who had it all would end her own life. Then her cousins receive an ominous threat: one heiress down, four to go.

Was it suicide . . . or murder? The remaining heiresses—Corinne, the perfectionist; Rowan, the workaholic; Aster, the hedonist; and Natasha, the enigma—wrestle with feelings of sadness, guilt, and, most of all, fear. Now they must uncover the truth about their family before they lose the only thing money can't buy: their lives.

Then I read the back of the book again, reminded myself that one of the vapid heiresses in the book was due to be murdered and I picked it up and started to read again. I honestly didn't care which one was going to die - I just hoped that it would be dramatic and exciting. It wasn't.The book is not a murder mystery. Oh, there's a murder to be solved, but this is really just a chick lit 'he loves me / he loves me not' story. That would have been okay, except that it wasn't fun. A story like this, featuring Kardashian Klones, should have been a blast. It should have been over the top excess - a bubble gum and Jimmy Choo fantasy gone wild.Unfortunately, instead of fabulous escapism, there are interchangeable heiresses who really just live like the rest of us (really, I couldn't tell three of the five apart) and a ho hum murder mystery with a humdrum conclusion.Skip.

Predictable By SPROUT Picking up one of my old Jackie Collins novels and re-reading it would have proved to be more exciting and satisfying than this ...what do I call it without insulting anyone?...piece of bland writing.I forced myself through this book just to see if it would lead anything and all I got was an open question setting the audience up for a sequel.Shepard could have done a lot more with the concept. I understand that beach reads don't require thought but they are guilty pleasures and require thought from the author if not the reader. When you uncover a scandal it should be a surprise or something exciting rather than something dropped in your lap (like and heiress receiving a pair of jimmy choos when she has 80 pairs already - nice, but who cares?)She could have also built up the characters instead of creating their one dimensional steadfast trait. (Read: this is poppy -she's perfect and envied by all. This is Rowan - she's the tomboy. This is aster - she's the party girl. This is Natasha - she's our mysterious outcast. This is Corrine - she's responsible. Now repeat for 300 pages in case the reader missed it and base every decision for each character off of their one characteristic. Boring). She tried to create scandals but it goes something like 20 pages of boring/whining heiresses and then "omg-illegitimate child!! Someone have sex...start a new day".I've never read her other books but I highly suggest that Ms Sheppard should stick to her YA novels or understand that adult novels require something more well developed than the occasional sex scene. Just because the characters are adults it can still be YA if they act like teens.I have this one extra star for the mystery aspect of the book....it was ok.Not impressed and hoping this doesn't represent her more popular writings. Not recommended if you like to think just a little bit.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A mindless, soulless, bounded train-wreck of a book that will have you slightly embarrassed to admit you read. By Reeka aka BoundbyWords SO.MANY.CHARACTERS. That, I must admit, the handy family tree printed at the start of the book did very little to help with. There was already just too many names being dropped, way too early on-I felt completely bombarded. I want to say that I loved this book, once it caught it's stride, but I can't say that with honesty either. However, I will tell you, that I was completely addicted. The Heiresses was like that shameful couple of hours spent watching The Real Wives (any one!), or Keeping Up With the Kardashians. *SIGH* It was horrible for the brain cells, but ask me if I looked away...Secrets, lies, scandals, and betrayals. Those four acts were the favoured life choices made by the remaining heiresses to the Saybrook diamond fortune. The (long) synopsis above is a better look into the storyline that played out in this book, and says much about what you can expect to find within it's pages. People keep dropping dead, with the belief that a family curse is abound. Lies, and secrets, are slowly beginning to emerge and shock. The reader was, at many times, privy to these revelations long before the characters were, turning The Heiresses into that group of friends you were always DYING to be a part of. It was ridiculously easy to get caught up in the drama, which seemed to be never-ending.I have never read Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series, but I was completely obsessed with the TV series adaptation. I expected her books to match the quality of the show, but I found myself disappointed on that front. The Heiresses was poorly written, but the type of poor that had me reading it like I was perusing the likes of people.com, or Mr. Perez Hilton's lovely page. I'm sure that this was Shepard's intent, to write a book that was purely steeped in entertainment, drama, and gossip. If so, she achieves that with flying colours, and some seriously scandalous twists of events. The Heiresses was the epitome of a perfect summer read. A mindless, soulless, bounded train-wreck of a book that will have you slightly embarrassed to admit you read, but secretly wondering if there will be a second..and third...and fourth..?
